Accommodation for Homecoming Visits
We stayed as a family of five (a couple, two elementary school children, and one junior high school student). This was our second stay, the first in four years. This time we stayed in the Bamboo Room. The kids were impressed by the spaciousness and layout and quietly said, “This Room is big and cool”—simple but spot-on. Personally, I liked how calm and comfortable the toilet area felt. As for the meals, we stayed for two nights and had one dinner and two breakfasts. Above all, the rice is delicious. And its perfect partner—the miso soup—is also excellent. In particular, I recommend the sesame tofu with thickened sauce; it’s a classic Shonai “gottso” (local feast). It was my first time trying Yamabushi pork, and it had none of the usual pork odor—very gentle on the stomach. We also requested meals for our children, and even vegetables they don’t usually eat—like dried daikon strips—were finished completely with comments like “The seasoning is really good.” That reminded me again how this Shonai region has traditionally cultivated ways to make vegetables taste truly delicious. We also went as a family to a nearby place called “Yakitori Hide.” You can relax in their raised seating area while enjoying tasty yakitori, so if you have time, I recommend it as well. Since this is an Onsen Ryokan Accommodation, Tsukasaya’s main attraction is of course the baths. They aren’t large communal baths or brand-new facilities, but there’s a system where you can bathe anytime if it’s available (you can tell by whether slippers are there). We used them twice each day—at night and in the morning. After driving from Kanagawa, they helped us recover properly; it feels soothing from deep inside your body. Considering our parents’ aging and reducing the burden on our family home when we return to visit, we stay here during trips back—but for our kids especially, Tsukasaya seems to be where they feel Tsuruoka and Shonai most.
