Guests with tattoos in the Onsen
What surprised me most was seeing two men with full traditional Japanese tattoos in the Onsen. They didn’t cause any trouble, but it did make it less relaxing. Also, one of the dishes we ordered was not served... The Room being old is understandable, but it felt dim.

I stayed in Room 215...
I stayed in Room 215, a Japanese-Western style room with a private Onsen bath. The Room was spacious enough, and the bath was large; the water quality was also very good. Dinner was a charcoal-grilled course, but three river fish dishes were served, and two of them were rainbow trout. I like river fish such as amago, iwana, and ayu, but since this was not a river-fish course, I wondered if two dishes would have been enough. Given the mountain location, I was not expecting seafood or luxury ingredients. I simply wanted to enjoy a wider variety of local specialties. I felt the ingredients did not match the price. I checked in at 14:00 when there were no other guests. I asked the Japanese front desk staff where to park, but only received a brief verbal explanation; no one came to guide me in the parking area or help with my luggage. I only met two Japanese staff members; otherwise most staff were foreign nationals as is often seen at other Accommodations recently. What differed from elsewhere was that staff other than those in the dining area would avert their eyes in the hallway, look down, and exaggeratedly step aside without offering any greeting at all. In addition, when I spoke to one of the Japanese front desk staff for assistance, they replied “Huh?” rather than “Yes” or “How may I help you?”, which left me speechless. In service businesses like an Accommodation listed on IKYU.com, making guests feel the negative side of cost-cutting efforts diminishes the sense of escape and excitement I had expected and discourages any desire to return. This reminded me that courteous hospitality—something that costs nothing—is actually essential.

A Wonderful Accommodation with a Great Onsen
An Accommodation just a short walk from the bus stop. When we stopped by before check-in to leave our luggage for a trip to the Yume no Tsuribashi Suspension Bridge, they kindly let us into our Room early, so we took a short rest before heading out sightseeing. The Onsen after returning tired was silky-smooth and very relaxing. There were four of us, but the Room felt spacious. Having two sinks in the wash area was also great. The price was reasonable, and we were very satisfied.

My son and his wife ...
My son and his wife took her parents to show them around Oku-Oi in Shizuoka, and they stayed at Suikouen. They asked me to tell you it was a wonderful Ryokan they were truly satisfied with. From the warm welcome onward, every detail of your hospitality was exceptional—the atmosphere in the lobby, the furnishings, how delicious the food and sake were, and the baths were so relaxing that they went in many times. There are many stylish Hotels in the city, but they said they came to love Suikouen as a long-established Ryokan in a quiet mountain village. I’m also very happy that I made the Reservation. Thank you very much.

A quiet and pleasant Onsen
We arrived around 2:00 PM and asked if we could check in at that time, and thank you for kindly accommodating us. The meals featured local ingredients with a wide variety of dishes, and everything was delicious. Also, we were able to use the Onsen at any time and relax.

A Historic Ryokan in a Secluded Hidden Retreat
With its waterwheel at the entrance and spacious, relaxing lobby, this Ryokan has the calm, dignified atmosphere of a long-established inn. In the guest rooms, you are welcomed by the gentle aroma of tea from an incense burner, and throughout the stay you’ll find thoughtful touches unique to Shizuoka’s renowned tea culture—such as complimentary chilled tea in the bath area and tea shabu-shabu served with meals. The staff were kind and pleasant everywhere from the front desk to the dining room, allowing us to enjoy a truly unhurried stay. The shop also had an appealing selection of items.

It was an amazing trip!
The staff provided attentive service, even discreetly replacing the tea set while preparing the bedding. The only concern was that dinner dishes were served at an incredibly fast pace, making it difficult to savor each dish slowly. However, those who prefer quick meals might actually enjoy this!

Thank you.
The front desk, restaurant, and service staff were all very pleasant, leaving a lasting impression. Thanks to them, I had a relaxing stay. Although the facility felt slightly dated, the room was clean and comfortable. The Onsen water was not too hot, allowing for a leisurely soak. Amenities were sufficient as well. The meals cooked over the irori (traditional hearth) were delicious, and there was an enjoyable selection of rare local sake to choose from. Thank you very much for your hospitality. I would love to visit again!

A well-balanced and excellent accommodation
The front desk staff's response felt somewhat formal, but the dining staff were very attentive, and both the taste and portion of the meals were excellent, enhancing the value of this Ryokan. The quality of the bathwater was also good. Access by car can be a bit challenging, but it is an accommodation I would like to visit again.

Make a Reservation in the Afternoon for Same-Day Accommodation Use
I made a same-day reservation on Saturday afternoon and stayed for the second time. This accommodation, located deep in the mountains away from the hustle and bustle of the city, has an old-fashioned charm that adds to its appeal. While not extravagant, both the meals and onsen were thoroughly enjoyable. It is very convenient for an overnight stay before visiting Yume no Tsuribashi (Dream Suspension Bridge). I would love to stay here again if I have another opportunity.

The Onsen was truly ...
The Onsen was truly wonderful. Overall, the satisfaction level is high. However, it would be better to provide two room keys. When staying as a pair, we are not always together, so having only one key is very inconvenient.

I had a comfortable stay.
Thanks to the spacious Room with a bath, I was able to relax very much. There are several types of private baths, each with a different atmosphere to enjoy, and I was very satisfied. It's not flashy, but it's highly recommended for those who prefer a calm stay.

The hot spring here is amazing, and I keep coming back.
I once visited this Onsen with my mother. Having worked on shoots for publications like "Jalan," "Tokyo Calendar," and "Sarai" across the whole country, I can say that accommodations offering both indoor and outdoor baths with natural free-flowing hot spring water are surprisingly rare in easily accessible locations. While Sumatakyo might be considered deep in the mountains, there are certainly more remote hidden spots with amazing spring quality. However, for a place that's easy to visit, this level of quality is truly exceptional and precious. The meals here feature simple yet satisfying countryside dishes that meet expectations perfectly. For visitors from afar, the focus on local ingredients and game meat dishes is exactly what they’re looking for—always enhancing appetite! Perhaps it's the great water here—the rice is incredibly delicious, making it hard not to eat too much. Though it's an older accommodation, it’s well-maintained and very comfortable. Many of the staff members are from overseas but make a heartfelt effort to learn Japanese dish names and explain them warmly—it’s endearing! This is one of my favorite accommodations. I look forward to visiting again!

The Onsen is wonderful, but the meals and facilities are not quite up to par.
The quality of the Onsen in both the private bath and the large public bath was very high. Additionally, as an established Ryokan, the staff's attitude was commendable. However, the meal menu was reminiscent of a large Ryokan from 30 years ago, lacking any distinctive features. I would like to see a reduction in quantity and the provision of a menu with unique characteristics that stand out. Although there may be financial constraints, the building generally gives an impression of being outdated, and I hope for some investment in the Facility. Given the high quality of the Onsen, improvements in meals and Facilities are desired.

The Onsen is good.
The road to get there is somewhat challenging. The quality of the water is smooth and the best among the Onsen I've experienced. The food is casual yet delicious. Overall cost performance is very good, but it would be even better if cards could be used at the souvenir shop.
