    A relaxing accommodation

This was my second stay. This time, I chose a Room with an open-air bath. Since it’s on the second floor, the view isn’t great, but I was able to soak and relax at my own pace. The open-air bath in the large public bath has an amazing view. The meals were delicious as well. This is an Accommodation I want to return to again and again. I’ll be back!

A welcoming Accommodation with warm hospitality that you’ll want to visit again

I first learned about this Accommodation in a travel magazine and had wanted to visit for years. From the moment I made my Reservation, the staff reached out several times with thoughtful messages, which felt truly warm and welcoming. I’m grateful for their kind advice on transportation as well as nearby recommended spots and restaurants. Set on a vast property, the Accommodation offers wonderful views, and I was thrilled to encounter deer while strolling around. The Onsen had excellent water quality, the Facility was well maintained, and I was able to unwind and soothe my fatigue while enjoying the scenery. A local regular I spoke with in the bath said they stay here every month—I couldn’t help but envy them. It was an outstanding Accommodation where both mind and body could fully relax. I would love to visit again. Every staff member was gentle and attentive, and their hospitality made it possible for me to truly feel at ease throughout my stay—each day felt happy. Thank you very much for such a wonderful time.

This is just my personal opinion.

I was at fault for taking the Reviews that said it was “very good” at face value. Rooms & Amenities The aging of the entire building is clearly noticeable. What stands out, though, is the library—whoever’s collection it is, the variety and number of books are surprising. However, there is no air conditioning in the reading room. Even though the elevation is 700 meters, it was impossible to read comfortably in this season. The yukata provided felt low in quality and rather rough. Service The front desk staff were kind and helpful. However, issues with the dining staff were obvious. Communication in Japanese did not go smoothly. There were multiple occasions where they seemed unable to understand our orders. Onsen & Baths Perhaps it’s characteristic of Kirishima: as rumored, the sulfur Onsen is excellent. That said, there are many other great hot springs in the surrounding area as well. Dining Meals are an important part of enjoying a stay along with the hot springs. Dinner was truly disappointing. The sashimi was hard to justify for an Accommodation Fee of 34,000 yen for two people. The grilled dish was salt-grilled ayu; when it arrived it had an unpleasant odor that’s hard to describe, so I asked them to take it back immediately. I apologized to my companion. I will omit comments on breakfast. Overall When I write a Review, I do so for those who may choose this Facility after reading my impressions. I would like to know whether the dinners described in Reviews that gave 5 points were fundamentally different from what was served to me.

    It was the best accommodation!

This was my first trip in a long time with my elderly mother, and everyone—starting with the male staff member who assisted us at check-in—provided truly wonderful service. I feel I probably shouldn’t describe the details here due to the nature of the service, so it’s a shame I can’t be more specific, but it helped us immensely. On the way there we couldn’t find a drugstore anywhere and were really struggling, so we were genuinely grateful. Thank you very much. Until we arrived, the route from the airport side had many mountain roads with steep slopes and curves. Even though I’m used to driving in the city, it was so high up in the mountains that I kept thinking, “Is there really an Accommodation up here?” But seeing Sakurajima so beautifully from both our Room and the restaurant made perfect sense of the location. The building—including inside—has a retro Showa-era atmosphere that felt nostalgic for us, and I think younger guests might even find it surprisingly appealing as “Instagrammable.” We couldn’t finish all of our meal, and afterward I regretted not asking to have the lava grill and hot pot lit earlier. Everything was delicious, each dish on its own. It may have been by chance, but we were also very happy that there were no foreign tourists staying on our night. (At Onsens with many foreign tourists, some people have poor manners and it often leaves us feeling uncomfortable…) The restaurant staff are foreign staff members, but everyone was very friendly; their smiles were wonderful, many were attentive and considerate, and they provided such pleasant service that it reminded us to do better ourselves. We had reserved a private Onsen in advance, and Akamatsu-no-Yu was outstanding. I’ve visited many Onsens around Japan before, but this was my first time experiencing one like that deep in nature—it felt full of fresh forest air. My mother and I even said it might have been a little scary at night—but we found ourselves constantly soothed by the sound of trees swaying in the wind and birds singing. Finally, when we checked out, another male staff member kindly assisted us as well. When he brought our car around there were dried leaves stuck to the windshield; he carefully removed every one of them for us. We even received tea, an Onsen egg (hot-spring egg), and a souvenir towel with the Hotel name—truly exceptional hospitality. This Accommodation made me feel that this is exactly what a memorable place to stay should be like. Thank you again for taking such great care of us.

Watch three deer from the library lounge window!

Sakurajima looked huge right in front of us, and we were thrilled by the stunning views from the restaurant’s large windows, the public bath, and our Room! The free-flowing natural Onsen (simple spring and sulfur spring) was amazing—bathing while looking out at Sakurajima was the best. We also enjoyed the free private open-air bath and got to soak in the famous Akamatsu-no-Yu. There were as many as 20,000 books—magazines, picture books, manga, and more—neatly arranged by category. By chance, we spotted three wild deer from the lounge window and got really excited. All of the staff were friendly with warm smiles. They also explained each dish thoroughly. The Onsen eggs we received as a souvenir were delicious. Next time, I’d love to book a Multiple Night Stay—soak in the Onsen, relax surrounded by books, take it easy, and go hiking in the mountains. We’ll be back again.

    A comfortable Accommodation.

This was my first time staying here. From the name, I imagined a remote mountain lodge, and since it’s called a “mountain villa,” I thought I shouldn’t expect too much—but I was completely wrong. Just as rumored, the hot spring water is wonderful. There’s also a foot bath; private baths with a different charm from the large public bath with its great views; several lounges with bookshelves stocked with many books; and a chic, relaxing lobby. It’s the kind of lodge where I’d like to come back in summer and stay for several days on my own. The meals were just right—not too much, not too little. All of the staff were calm and attentive. I truly felt glad I stayed here, and promised myself I would definitely return.

Huh? Is that a Ruddy Kingfisher?

Since no Western-style Room was available, we stayed in the Family Room for a Multiple Night Stay. We were contacted twice—right after making the Reservation and again one week before our stay—and you kindly assisted us with booking the open-air bath and accommodating food allergies. Thank you very much. The highly regarded Akamatsu-no-Yu at night, as well as the large public bath, were both wonderful—the water quality and views were excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed our bathing time. On the second day, due to an intense thunderstorm, we canceled our private bath reservation for Momiji-no-Yu. In the morning, perhaps because of the storm the day before, we were able to see Sakurajima surrounded by a sea of clouds. Amid the calls of cuckoos and frogs, we even heard what sounded like an Akashobin—combined with the scenery, it was truly moving. The starry sky we saw at midnight also looked somewhat like the Milky Way. Hanafusa Falls visible beyond a long staircase This Accommodation is surrounded by rich nature. We enjoyed both mountain delicacies and seafood delicacies very much, but there was so much that we couldn’t finish everything—sorry about that. The rice, tea, and dried daikon pickle were incredibly delicious. Thank you for a wonderful meal.

    This is my fourth visit.

If the weather is good, the views are outstanding. The Onsen is excellent, and it’s a calm place to stay—this was my fourth visit. This time it was spring and the weather wasn’t great, but the Onsen was wonderful as always, so I was very satisfied. The spring dishes were also delicious, and next time I’d like to book a Multiple Night Stay. When I don’t have a car, I take a bus from the airport or arrange a sightseeing taxi and ask them to include Shuttle Service as well. A highly recommended Accommodation.

    Highly rated accommodation

At first glance, this Accommodation feels a bit retro in a Showa-era way. However, the meals, Onsen, and staff service all exceeded expectations and were highly satisfying. It’s such a wonderful place that it makes you want to come back—I’d like to visit again next time with my family and relatives.

The view of Sakurajima from the Room and the bath are wonderful.

We stayed as a family of three on Monday, March 23, 2026. We had stayed in Kirishima before, but after hearing in a Review that the baths were wonderful, we chose this Accommodation for the first time. We were amazed at how beautifully Sakurajima could be seen from Kirishima. From the main building’s open-air bath, we could also see Sakurajima at sunset—an excellent soak. One family member has difficulty walking, so we gave up our reserved private bath “Akamatsu-no-Yu” and switched to a private bath inside the main building instead; it was a semi-open-air bath and very relaxing. The design of the bath was tasteful, and since it was cherry blossom season, we enjoyed fully blooming sakura while listening to Japanese bush warblers—we went in twice. The meals were delicious and very satisfying. This has become one of the Accommodations we would like to visit again.

    Sakurajima and Onsen

The weather was great that day, and it was an amazing experience to enjoy the Onsen while looking at Sakurajima, then have dinner. You can also see Mt. Kaimon. Just soaking in the Onsen made my skin smooth and glowing. At Akamatsu-no-Yu (the open-air bath), a parent deer and its fawn even wandered by nearby—it was so peaceful. Listening to the Japanese bush warbler while soaking in the Onsen and taking in the view felt truly luxurious. I also appreciated that they provided extra towels when I asked at the front desk. Beyond the scenery, I enjoyed the cultural side as well—art, crafts, books, and music. The food was of course delicious, especially the sashimi and white rice. I had a wonderful time. Thank you very much.

    Annual Tradition Accommodation

This is a cherished accommodation that our family visits every year without fail. We started coming here when I was dating my wife, continued after we got married, and now as our child has grown and started walking, this place has become a part of our family's journey and memories. We are always impressed by the wonderful hospitality and service from the staff. This time was no exception—it was perfect! Looking forward to visiting again soon.

    I visited here to ex...

I visited here to express my gratitude to my parents and aunts who have always been kind to me. In the past, when it was more affordable, my father and others often visited because the onsen was great and the meals were delicious. However, with recent general price increases, they mentioned they couldn't go anymore, so I decided to bring them myself. After making the reservation, I received several calls from you. Upon learning that I would be bringing three elderly people, you kindly suggested that checking in around 2:30 PM would allow us plenty of time, which was truly helpful. You assigned us a room on the top floor; the onsen not only had excellent water quality but also offered breathtaking views from the open-air bath. Although your facility has a history of 58 years and shows its age in some areas, appropriate renovations have been made for a comfortable stay. The meals were delicious as well; I'm genuinely glad we came here. The balance between cost and quality was excellent, and I understood why your ratings are so high. We even received various souvenirs upon departure and enjoyed ourselves until the very end. Thank you very much for taking care of us!

    Smooth and silky skin

Stayed for a 1-night, 2-day family trip. Despite the number of guests, the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. The simmered dishes, Satsuma-age, and abura-miso were delicious with a gentle seasoning overall. The homemade plum wine served as an aperitif and the tea during meals were smooth and flavorful. The onsen had plenty of mineral deposits, leaving my skin silky after bathing. Thank you for the thoughtful souvenirs of towels, tea, and onsen eggs. Grateful for the warm hospitality!

    I had a relaxing stay.

I often visit the Kirishima area for hiking, but this time I stayed at Ryokojin Sanso, recommended by a friend. The accommodation, though showing some age, was clean and very comfortable. The meals were delicious, and all the staff were kind and attentive, making my stay pleasant. Next time, I would like to visit during the autumn foliage season and enjoy a walk to the waterfall. Thank you very much!

    Filled with gratitude.

We visited Kagoshima for my husband's retirement celebration, combining it with a golf trip. After visiting a golf course near Kagoshima Airport, we searched for nearby accommodations and chose Ryokanjin Sanso after reading reviews on IKYU.com. We were particularly drawn to the open-air bath located in the forest. At the time of reservation, the most popular "Akamatsu no Yu" was fully booked, so we requested to be notified if there were any cancellations. To our delight, we received a call the day before informing us that there had been a cancellation and we could use it. On the day of check-in, we were informed that there was an issue with our reserved room and that they had upgraded us to a higher-grade room. To our surprise, it was a Japanese-Western style room with its own open-air bath! On top of that, there was a congratulatory message and flowers on the table—such thoughtful gestures from the hotel staff deeply moved us. It became an unforgettable memory for my husband who worked until he turned 80 years old. The Miyama Gozen dinner was delicious and more than enough for us elderly guests; they even prepared rice balls as night snacks for us! The restaurant staff were incredibly kind as well. This truly became an amazing commemorative trip thanks to this wonderful hotel choice. Thank you very much!

An accommodation that lives up to its popularity

This accommodation seems to be very popular, as it has been featured in magazines, but I found it on IKYU.com without knowing much about it and made a reservation. After making the reservation, they kindly called to confirm if I wanted to book a private bath. At that time, I didn’t realize how popular the private baths were, but they seem to be highly sought after. Even if you can’t use the private bath, the large public bath is more than satisfying. As mentioned in reviews, the staff at this accommodation provide excellent service. This trip was for a belated birthday celebration by one month, and they gave us beautifully arranged flowers and dessert as a thoughtful gesture. At checkout, we received cold bottled water, onsen eggs, and towels from Ryokojin Sanso as gifts. The onsen warmed our bodies while the hospitality of the staff warmed our hearts. The accommodation fee was so reasonable that we almost felt guilty about it! We’ve added another place we’d love to revisit. Thank you very much to all the staff at Ryokojin Sanso!

A wonderful time spent at an accommodation where you can enjoy nature.

Right after completing the reservation, we received information about a private open-air bath and reserved "Akamatsu no Yu." The open-air bath surrounded by trees was amazing. There was also a walking trail on the premises for forest bathing, and we walked to a waterfall. The view from the large public bath felt as if we had Sakurajima all to ourselves. On the night of our stay, there happened to be a piano concert. We had the most wonderful time as a couple. Thank you very much!

Above all, the Onsen, a private bath with a sense of openness!

It was the perfect Property for Onsen lovers. I am very satisfied. I had heard that the Onsen was wonderful, so I definitely wanted to stay. I was able to make a Reservation for my desired "Akamatsu no Yu," and my trip to Kagoshima was Done (laugh). (I planned to book a flight according to that Reservation.) Staying here is the purpose of my trip, and it was well worth it. Blessed with good weather, we were able to enjoy a wonderful private open-air bath. The faint smell of sulfur springs and the scent of red pine forest, the bath is incredibly spacious, and there is an unparalleled sense of openness as if you have rented out an entire forest; it's simply amazing. The view of Sakurajima from the large public bath was also great. The large public bath at Shiroyama Kanko Hotel offers an impressive view of Sakurajima; here, however, there is another kind of beauty with mountain ranges wrapped in sea clouds extending all the way to Sakurajima. The rooftop being open provided a breathtaking experience worthy of its name "Sky Terrace" with its starry sky. In the morning, while soaking in our Room's open-air bath, deer came in herds which prompted me to take photos spontaneously. It’s been one amazing experience after another. I felt it truly lived up to its reputation as a Property. I'll visit again; thank you for everything.

This is a recommended Property for those who like Onsen and is close to Kagoshima Airport!

We stayed at the property for a trip celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary and to visit the training camp of our local baseball team. The renowned onsen offers two types of spring quality: simple spring and sulfur spring, both with excellent water volume and quality. From the open-air bath, you can see Sakurajima during the day and a starry sky at night. Private baths are also available, and we enjoyed using Akamatsu no Yu, famous from TV commercials. The meals were abundant in variety for both dinner and breakfast, allowing us to savor dishes made with local ingredients. Although the facility is slightly old, it is clean and operated with an awareness of SDGs. The guest room had ample space for two people, with plenty of shared spaces like a post-bath area and reading room. All staff members were kind in their service; even those from abroad had studied Japanese well and were doing their best. I would like to use this property again when I have another opportunity to visit Kagoshima.

    Impressive

I have used the day-use onsen twice before, so I knew the quality of the spring and the great view. This time, I decided to stay so that my 85-year-old mother (her first visit) could enjoy the onsen at leisure. I was worried that the dining hall and bathhouse might be crowded due to the number of people checking in, but for some reason, that was not the case at all, and we were able to spend time quietly and leisurely in both places. The room had a wonderful view with Sakurajima in front and the mountains of Osumi and Satsuma on either side, which delighted my mother. What impressed me was the number of books in the lobby and next to the large bath. It was like the shelves of a library or bookstore, just looking at them was enjoyable. The room at the far end of the lobby floor was related to local history, the room in front of it was about the magazine "Ryokojin," and the gallery had general literary books. The room next to the bathhouse mainly had manga, I think? I spent two hours reading in the gallery, lay down as soon as I returned to the room, and the next morning enjoyed the onsen again... It was like a dream. Both my mother and I were very satisfied with the property. We even received souvenirs, for which we are truly grateful. I definitely want to visit again, and next time, stay for at least two nights to enjoy the onsen and reading.

I felt a sense of consideration throughout.

Was the building renovated while keeping its original appearance and listening to the guests' feedback? I felt attention to detail in various aspects (for example, barrier-free access, and each light switch is labeled with the corresponding light). The property is very spacious, with a round garden that enhances the experience of stargazing at night, a footbath area, and a drinking fountain. There are tables and chairs placed everywhere for relaxation, and many books are lined up. Kagoshima's artworks are displayed in abundance, providing enjoyment. The cleanliness is impeccable. The meals felt like home-cooked hospitality dishes. I think it's a property where you can enjoy a leisurely stay for an extended period. On departure, I received a souvenir, and although it wasn't expensive, I could feel the thought put into each item, which was heartwarming. Thank you very much.

    Nothing in particular...

I stayed in a Japanese-Western style room. The hotel's location is on a hill, offering a good view. Although the road leading to the hotel is narrow in some places, it was nice to see Sakurajima. The onsen was also nice, with private baths available. The water was good too. The food wasn't bad, but having stayed at three other hotels in Kagoshima before, I felt that compared to those, this hotel didn't have many distinctive features, either in a good or bad way, and there seemed to be fewer things that felt unique to Kagoshima. The room wasn't bad either, but despite being a Japanese-Western style room, it felt quite cramped when futons were laid out in the Japanese-style area. It was a bit disappointing that there weren't many standout features compared to other hotels.

I have stayed with my beloved dog about five times, and the forest trekking is simply wonderful, bringing joy to my dog and healing my soul. The onsen is also incredibly pleasant, and the staff's attention to detail makes everything feel like an intellectually sophisticated Ryokan for adults, which is why I visit repeatedly. By the way, this is not a pet-friendly Ryokan, so my dog stays in the car. I am currently dealing with an illness, and I'm not sure if I can come again, but if I'm well, I would love to visit again.

It was a property whose charm is conveyed over time.

Honestly, the building is old and the room's age cannot be denied. The first impression upon entering the room was not good. However, when you first take in the view, the panorama is pleasant, soaking in the onsen heals the body and mind, and dining satisfies the taste buds and stomach. It's a good Stays that seems to become a habit.

    Fun Stays

It was really great. After climbing the two mountains, Mt. Karakuni and Mt. Takachiho, we were tired when we arrived at the Stays, but the Onsen and meals were really good, the library was wonderful and relaxing, and there were flowers everywhere, which made us feel at ease. Also, all the staff were cheerful, the conversations were enjoyable, and it was a very pleasant experience. We are grateful for the heartwarming hospitality, such as the birthday flowers. The garden was well-maintained, the view from the footbath was beautiful, and the decorations inside the Property were lovely, making it enjoyable everywhere. I thought "Ryokojin Sanso" was an unusual name, but it came from the Ryokojin magazine. The cute illustrations are nice too. The entire Property was fun and relaxing, it was truly a wonderful Ryokojin Sanso. I definitely want to stay again. I gained energy. Thank you very much.

You can see Sakurajima on a clear day!

Unfortunately, during this stay, Sakurajima was obscured by clouds and could not be seen. It is truly a property with a spectacular view that can be enjoyed from both the room and the restaurant. On the day of arrival, it was pouring rain, making sightseeing impossible, so we arrived at the property early. However, we were able to check in right away, allowing us to fully enjoy the onsen and make the most of our stay. The room has been renovated, is well-cleaned, and is very beautiful. Ice water and hot water are pre-set. There is a reading room, and the lobby is spacious, providing a truly relaxing atmosphere. The onsen features sulfur and simple springs, which leave the skin feeling smooth and warm. The private bath is truly in the forest, allowing for a forest bathing experience. We were able to enjoy two locations as there was availability first thing in the morning. Many of the staff are from overseas, but everyone was very attentive and accommodating. The meals were plentiful, with many Kagoshima specialties! Both the fish and meat were delicious! It was the last property of our trip to Southern Kyushu, and we were able to relax thoroughly. We were even given souvenirs upon departure, which made us very happy! Thank you very much.

It is understandable that there are repeat guests.

The private bath was comfortable. It wasn't luxurious or had a hidden retreat feel, but it was cozy, so if your schedule allows, I recommend making a reservation in advance. The open-air bath in the large public bath also had a pleasant atmosphere with a nice view and slightly lukewarm water that you could soak in for a long time. In the bath, I met people who have been visiting twice a year for about ten years, and others who have been coming every season (four times a year) recently, confirming the large number of repeat visitors. The meals were delicious as reputed, but at the venue I used (3rd floor), all the servers were foreigners. Although they were well-trained, I often felt uncomfortable with their explanations of the meal contents and serving methods. They probably intended to do their job diligently, but I wished they wouldn't bring the dishes one after another, completely ignoring my eating pace. The moment I finished the appetizer (without touching other dishes like sashimi), they started heating the stone plate (for meat) and the pot. The meat cooked quickly, and the solid fuel for the pot seemed about to burn out before I could start. Just when I finished the sashimi, they brought the fried dish (served before the final rice dish) before I could touch the pot. As expected, the fried dish wouldn't taste good if it got cold, so I reluctantly started with it while it was still warm, and as predicted, the pot began to cool down. This all happened in just 30 minutes. It wasn't an enjoyable meal. However, each dish was carefully prepared and delicious with natural flavors, so it would have been perfect if I could have eaten more slowly. It seemed that the repeat visitors were all dining on the 2nd floor (which has a better view than the 3rd floor), so I wondered if it's possible to request something during the reservation, or if the treatment differs depending on the room or reservation details... (or maybe it was just a coincidence) I thought it was worth investigating. That said, apart from the rushed dinner, I had no complaints. Perhaps I should have communicated better with the staff at the property... Overall, I thought it was a good property.

A property you'll want to visit again

For our first trip to Kagoshima, my husband wanted to stay at Ibusuki Onsen, but I wanted to stay one more night at an onsen, so we went to the famous Kirishima Onsen. Among the many properties, we chose this one because it had good reviews and not too many guest rooms. Thank you for contacting us multiple times via email and phone about the private bath before our stay. Thanks to you, we were able to enjoy a relaxing private bath as a couple before dinner. The large public bath also offered a beautiful night view from the open-air bath, and we could relax as there were hardly any people. The baths switch between men and women in the morning, so we felt like we experienced many baths and were very satisfied. We enjoyed delicious meals at a leisurely pace in a dining area with a great view for both breakfast and dinner. My husband, who is rarely satisfied, was very pleased, saying, "The onsen and meals are worth more than the price! If it were closer, I would definitely want to stay again." It turned out to be a great trip for just the two of us after many years. I thought it would be nice to visit with our daughters next time. Although it's far from Tokyo, I definitely want to go again with the whole family.
