    First-time Use

I was looking forward to this Accommodation, but overall it was very disappointing. Onsen: It smelled like disinfectant. I was especially looking forward to the Onsen, so this was truly disappointing. Room: The futon had a smell like someone’s head. I stayed for a Multiple Night Stay, but there was no Room cleaning. The snacks on the second day were very cheap. Meals: The dining area had an odd smell. The food was okay, but not particularly elaborate. Service: Personally, I didn’t really click with the service from the young part-time staff.

    It was a comfortable Room.

I visited hoping to see Mt. Gassan, but unfortunately the weather wasn’t great. Thanks to that, I was able to relax without packing my schedule. I stayed in “Mansaku,” a top-floor Room. The Room itself isn’t very large, but the high ceiling makes it feel open and comfortable. The Facility was perfect, but you may not want to expect the level of hospitality you’d get at a Hotel or Ryokan. I arrived in heavy rain, but even after speaking to the front desk, no one came out to help unload my luggage. I was told they would serve a welcome drink after all check-in procedures were completed, and I wasn’t sure when I was supposed to sit down. I also had high expectations for the meals, but we were simply told “Please enjoy,” and even after waiting a bit there was no explanation of the dishes. Since it was just under JPY 40,000 for one night, I would have liked some information about the ingredients. It was especially disappointing because there were many unique mountain vegetable dishes. That said, it was very quiet and relaxing overall, which I appreciated.

It was a truly valuable experience.

I stayed here while visiting the Dewa Sanzan shrines. The Accommodation had a very relaxing atmosphere, the meals were delicious, and the bath was excellent. I also signed up the night before and was able to join an early-morning visit to Mt. Yudono. It was a truly rare and wonderful experience. I will definitely return. Thank you very much.

We’d love to visit again in a different season.

We were delayed getting here from our previous stop and arrived after 5:00 pm, and this Accommodation was so wonderful and full of enjoyment that it made us truly regret losing that time. We stayed at “Amrita” with our greatest anticipation being a relaxing soak in the Onsen, and it exceeded our expectations by far—the spacious bath and abundant hot water were incredibly soothing, and we felt as if we might melt into the view of Goshikinuma, where skunk cabbage could be seen peeking through the remaining snow. The meal, filled with the breath of spring, was a generous spread that brought happiness with every bite. We would love to visit again in a different season (though winter is difficult for us since we can’t ski).

    The meals were excellent.

Completely left unattended during the meal. I didn’t know when I was supposed to start eating… and the service was slow, which was frustrating. We visit looking forward to the meal. The hospitality was below even the bare minimum. Is it because we’re foreigners??? There are many foreign guests at other Ryokan as well, but they are properly taken care of. The environment and Facility are good, so it felt like such a waste.

Everything about this accommodation was wonderful. The meals, staff, and onsen were excellent. The staff were all very friendly, allowing me to relax completely. However, the only downside was that there were many stink bugs due to the season, and I found some dead ones in the onsen changing area. I will register this as one of my favorite accommodations. Thank you very much!

    Accommodation to fully enjoy Yudonosan.

Visited during a trip to climb Mt. Gassan. Although I couldn't visit the inner shrine of Mt. Gassan, I was blessed with clear skies and was deeply moved by the beauty of autumn leaves, sea of clouds, waterfall clouds, and other natural phenomena. Haguro-san, Gassan, Yudono-san—this accommodation was a perfect choice as part of my journey through past, present, and future. Originally established as an ascetic's accommodation in this area, it now seems more tailored for climbers or winter sports enthusiasts compared to other accommodations I've stayed at before. The room is a simple Japanese-style room with views of Mt. Gassan and Goshikinuma Pond—perfect for relaxing; however, there were quite a few stink bugs due to the season. Meals mainly featured mountain vegetables and mushrooms with various types to enjoy—unique and delicious! The bath uses "Ochimizu no Yu." While the bath itself had little taste or smell, the cold spring water provided had a slight salty flavor. A highlight is definitely the morning pilgrimage to Yudono-san—it was truly wonderful! Though early in the morning, it's worth attending. With only participants present during this time slot, you can calmly visit Yudono-san's main shrine and sacred object in small numbers without crowds like regular visitors experience; you can also purchase amulets there. Additionally welcomed by priests who share stories along with conversations with both them and the owner made for exceptional hospitality. Experiencing Yudono-san’s morning pilgrimage gave me deeper insights into visiting these three mountains individually but also emphasized avoiding noise while seeking solemnity during worship—a highly recommended experience for those desiring such tranquility through staying here overnight! I will definitely return again!

You might feel disappointed when you think of a Ryokan.

Upon arrival, it was raining, but there was no staff to greet us, and we had to unload all our luggage from the car and bring it into the accommodation ourselves. At the counter, there was only one young male staff member. Check-in was done while standing, and we were offered a glass of mountain grape juice as a welcome drink. There was no guidance to our room; we carried our luggage ourselves and entered the room without assistance. Information about the room or facilities consisted of just one sheet of paper. It had turned slightly chilly compared to previous hot days, but the air conditioning in the room wasn’t on, so we adjusted it ourselves after turning it on manually. Dinner was served in a large shared dining area (with chairs), with no partitions between guests’ tables—conversations from neighboring tables were clearly audible. Tea and water were self-service from a counter. The service level felt comparable to that of public lodges rather than high-end accommodations. However, the meal itself had decent flavors with local ingredients like wild vegetables and mushrooms being featured—though there wasn’t any sense of luxury in this aspect either. On the other hand, regarding hardware aspects: since we stayed in a special suite room, it was spacious and comfortable with thorough cleaning done well. The private bath attached to our room was also large and pleasant to use. The public bath area was spacious and clean as well; additionally, various displays throughout the facility showcased tasteful selections. However, even though it was a special suite costing over 100,000 yen for three people per night—we wouldn’t consider staying here again due to these shortcomings. While its hardware might meet IKYU’s standards for ranking purposes—the lack of hospitality staff (or rather their complete absence) is glaringly evident. We would recommend re-evaluating whether this accommodation truly meets IKYU.com’s listing standards not just for its hardware but also for its service quality—it left us deeply disappointed overall as an accommodation experience!

The only issue is that it's far and not easy to get to, but otherwise, there are no complaints at all!

I had passed by several times before, but this was my first time staying at Gassan. The natural environment was wonderful, and everything including the meals, bath, and room was excellent at this accommodation. The meals were of a very high standard that you can't experience elsewhere, and the bath was also quite good. Although the room was small, it was comfortable. I hope to find another opportunity to stay here again.

    Relaxing Accommodation

The view from the window, the onsen, the food, and the room were all excellent. It's an accommodation I would like to visit again.

Temptation of Smoked Char and Japanese Sake

Although the weather was not favorable, the meals at the accommodation lifted our spirits. The pairing of smoked char and locally brewed sake was exceptional. The smoked char is handmade at the accommodation, and it was so delicious that I couldn't resist buying some as a souvenir! (laughs) I look forward to visiting again next year to enjoy the smoked char and sake!

This year, it's this accommodation again.

We stayed at this accommodation again this year, just like last year. The cuisine, featuring wild vegetables and Yamagata beef, is as exquisite as ever. The rejuvenating Onsen is soothing and completely relieves travel fatigue. This heartwarming accommodation is a place you'll want to visit repeatedly. We look forward to coming back next year!

Your host might be a Yamabushi... haha

The Onsen is called "Ochimizu no Yu," named after Tsukuyomi no Mikoto. This water, just my imagination, seems to be connected underground to Yudono-san nearby. Both have a salty taste and are rich in minerals. Additionally, it’s common for me not to enjoy 1-2 dishes at most accommodations' meals, but I was surprised that this wasn’t the case at Tsutaya. Every dish was filled with love from the hostess and blessings from the mountain's wild vegetables. I happily finished everything on my plate! The chairman has undergone Yamabushi training in Dewa Sanzan and knows almost everything about Gassan, Haguro-san, and Yudono-san. Together with his son, they run this accommodation as an excellent team. For those who wish to deeply explore Gassan, this is a highly recommended and wonderful place to stay!

Used during a ski trip to Mount Gassan.

I used this accommodation for access to Mt. Gassan skiing. The meals were centered around mountain vegetables, and the entire facility had a tasteful Japanese atmosphere, was clean, and very relaxing. If the weather is good, the view of Mt. Gassan from the accommodation is breathtaking. Although it is labeled as casual, I think it is relatively a high-end ryokan.

    A sophisticated accommodation for adults.

I visited to enjoy wild vegetables. The wild vegetables, as well as the deep-fried char with sweet and sour sauce and the fried tofu for breakfast, were excellent. All the tableware was lovely too. It was an accommodation I would definitely like to revisit.

    Very good.

Listed as casual on IKYU, some places may have weaker facilities, but this one exceeded expectations. There were welcome drinks and beverages, the Room was clean, the food was great, and the Onsen was excellent. The heating worked well too.

More suitable for adults than for family use.

While it may not be flashy, the windows and room were thoroughly cleaned. This is an important point for spending time without stress. I have used it before, visiting for the purpose of dining. It might be too healthy and unsatisfying for younger people, but I think the meal content is quite satisfying for those who have finished raising children. I think I will use it again. The downside is the stink bugs. Perhaps because it's cold, they come into the Onsen and warm indoor areas. It's not a problem if you take measures, though.

The best accommodation for visiting the Dewa Sanzan.

It is not flashy, but it is a highly satisfying accommodation. Moreover, it is in the best location for heading to the Dewa Sanzan, and I also visited Yudonosan Shrine and Gassan early in the morning. I would like to stay there again.
