    A Peaceful Countryside Retreat

    Two years ago, I made a Reservation, but my father passed away and I had to Cancel the Reservation at short notice. It had been on my mind ever since, so this time I made another Reservation and stayed here. I truly enjoyed the best of the countryside! Honestly, it feels higher quality than many Hotels. The food was carefully prepared, with great flavor and texture in every dish, and the Room and bathroom were designed to be comfortable and easy for anyone to use. Above all, the hospitality is outstanding! If you want to experience the countryside, I highly recommend staying at Yamagataya!!

    The last remaining Atsushio Onsen Ryokan, Yamagataya—keep it up!

    I chose this as the closest Onsen for my Kitakata trip, and it was a fantastic find. There used to be several Ryokan in this area, but they have closed down, and now only Yamagataya remains. By making smart use of the traditional Facility while adapting to modern needs, they have continued refining it into a Ryokan where guests can truly relax. Efforts to improve guest satisfaction were evident throughout—barrier-free corridors, a seat inside the elevator, and a lounge with complimentary welcome drinks. The sodium-rich spring warmed me through to the core. Dinner was carefully prepared and delicious, with just the right portion size—especially appreciated by older guests. Above all, the white rice was simply outstanding. I almost wished it didn’t come at the end of the course—I’d love to have rice served at the start so I could enjoy it alongside the dishes. But breakfast more than made up for it: there was an abundant spread of locally sourced sides that made you want to keep eating rice, so I felt fully satisfied. If I had one small request, I’d be happy if there were EV charging facilities. I truly hope this kind of “great Ryokan” will remain for many years to come.

    A Peaceful Countryside Retreat

    The building itself has a charming, historic feel, but the guest rooms have been thoroughly renovated and are very comfortable, and both the hospitality and service are impeccable. Above all, the food is delicious, so we were completely satisfied. Truly first-class countryside—relaxing and unhurried. The complimentary drinks in the lounge were also great.

    A historic Ryokan

    There were no major inconveniences, but although I could connect to the Wi‑Fi, it would not connect to the internet (router issue). When I tried to buy something via QR code at the vending machine on the 3rd floor: - The Wi‑Fi would not connect to the internet - Even with Wi‑Fi turned off, the signal was so weak that I still couldn’t get online So only cash could be used. I understand that the Room facilities are old and that can’t really be helped, but the air conditioner only had high or low fan settings and kept making a loud noise. I also understand costs are rising and it’s difficult, but things like very rough toilet paper and worn-out bath towels were disappointing. The beef served was so tough that it didn’t seem like A5 grade at all. It would be impossible for someone with bad teeth to chew, and even I—having healthy teeth—left some. I think satisfaction would improve significantly if it were prepared in a way that makes it more tender, or if you avoided cooking it over heat. (After chewing for so long there was no flavor left, and I couldn’t even tell what I was eating.) Other than that, there were many dishes with interesting cooking methods and many tasty items as well, which was good overall. The staff during meals were very polite, and the Onsen (a bit hot for me) was also nice.

    A simple Onsen accommodation with great materials and friendly people

    The food, Onsen, and room were made with good materials, but some aspects of the Facility and minor details were a bit disappointing. Food The ingredients were excellent, and dinner was delicious. The service was also kind and attentive. However, breakfast felt quite minimal. It was prepared all at once without any coverings like plastic wrap, leaving the food exposed, which felt a bit disheartening. There didn’t seem to be many freshly cooked dishes either. The rice was very tasty. Onsen The water quality is excellent. However, in the larger outdoor bath area, it seemed that you might be visible from nearby houses when standing or moving towards the bath due to its layout. It felt like this aspect wasn’t well-considered in the design. Room The new room was very clean and modern; however, there was no closet for some reason. Coats had to be hung in the middle of the room on a rack provided there—this setup felt awkward as long coats couldn’t fit properly either due to space limitations in that spot. Additionally, while there’s a sink inside the room itself, its faucet is positioned high enough that water splashes every time it’s used. Although not mentioned explicitly beforehand during booking info—it appeared wheelchair-accessible overall yet still contained peculiar inconveniences unrelated-to accessibility needs themselves! Making adjustments ensuring universal usability would enhance everyone’s experience greatly!

    Enjoy meals and Onsen to the fullest

    The onsen, sauna, included dinner and breakfast, and Japanese-style room perfectly matched our preferences. Although we initially booked a mountain-side room, we were upgraded to a spacious room on the village side. It was extremely comfortable. The onsen was very relaxing, and I enjoyed it several times. As mentioned in the reviews, the meals were excellent—absolutely delicious! The sake we ordered paired perfectly with the food, allowing us to savor every bite. Both dinner and breakfast were satisfying with generous portions. Also, I enjoyed the veggie beer; while it might not suit everyone's taste, I personally liked it. With attentive service from the hotel staff, delicious meals, and a wonderful onsen experience, this stay was truly refreshing.

    While on a spontaneo...

    While on a spontaneous solo drive trip, I noticed the tagline "First-Class Countryside" and made a Reservation. The Facility's age and complex layout were noticeable, but both the Room and the large public bath were well-maintained with cleanliness. Although I only had breakfast, it was delicious and provided a decent level of satisfaction.

    "Experience Premium Countryside Living"

    Both dinner and breakfast were highly satisfying, as expected from a place specializing in creative cuisine. The diverse dishes featuring vegetables, fish, and meat were not only visually stunning but also healthy, making it hard to resist overeating. The Room was spacious, allowing for a relaxing time while enjoying the large-screen TV.

    The food and the Onsen were excellent!

    My first impression when arriving by car was, “Is this Ryokan going to be okay? (Sorry.)” It would be hard to call it an impressive Ryokan, to be honest. However, I was reassured by the refreshingly straightforward (in a good way) service from the staff member who checked me in at the front desk and guided me to my Room while carrying my luggage. As the title says, I enjoyed delicious creative cuisine for dinner in a semi-private dining space, and the staff were wonderful—simple, warm-hearted, kind, and courteous—and I truly appreciated it. Breakfast the next morning was also very tasty. The Room and in-house Facility were quite old, just like the exterior of the building; although they have made repeated renovations over time, it wasn’t really a place where you could expect modern comfort. Even so, the Onsen—both the indoor bath and open-air bath—was very pleasant to use. Because this Ryokan’s staff service and food were excellent, I hope they will continue to maintain this level of service going forward.

    A Satisfying Breakfast

    I enjoyed the hot salt Onsen multiple times. The breakfast lived up to its reputation, offering a wide variety of delicious dishes that left me fully satisfied. Despite the heavy snow, it was a memorable and charming one-night stay.

    The warmth of the people was wonderful.

    Surrounded by snow, snow, and more snow, but our hearts were warmed. The meals and the heartfelt hospitality of the staff brought us comfort and healing.

    It was very relaxing.

    It was my first visit, but the staff's response was very good, and the bath was very warm and relaxing. It was the best Onsen. The meals were carefully prepared one by one, and I was very satisfied with them.

    Last Minute Discount

    This is my second time, but I forgot that I had stayed before. At that time, they also advertised a "last-minute discount" to give a sense of value, but the amount paid by Local Payment was higher than the reservation amount on IKYU.com. Also, there was a comment saying there would be a gift for submitting a survey, but I was told the campaign had already ended. If so, why provide such information? It's careless. The large public bath also had a sense of uncleanliness that diminished the benefits of the hot salt. The sauna was not operational all day. I will never stay here again. The previous stay at Furukama was wonderful, which makes the disappointment even greater.

    Thank you for your hospitality.

    We visited for our wedding anniversary last time and had a wonderful stay, so we returned at the same time this year with our daughters. We were very impressed by the staff's dedication to hospitality. We were expecting a meal full of rustic charm, starting with the Daemon hot pot we had last time. However, perhaps due to cost-cutting, the meal was on par with any typical Onsen Ryokan, which was disappointing. The soy milk hot pot was unnecessary. The soba dumplings with sauce were similar to the previous dish, so it might be better to change the cooking method. We will look for another rustic Stays. Thank you very much.
