A charming Onsen Accommodation where you can experience traditional Japan and enjoy delicious meals!
Although it’s a secluded Accommodation deep in the mountains, it’s relatively easy to access by car and not difficult to reach. The Accommodation features classic, traditional Japanese architecture, yet it feels clean and has been thoughtfully renovated for comfort and ease of use. It was clear how much care goes into its upkeep, which I truly admire. The surrounding nature is lush, and the greenery and gentle sound of the river are very soothing. That said, the bedding mattress felt a bit firm for me personally, which was a small minus point (I didn’t wake up sore the next morning, so this is purely my personal impression). The hot spring source is around 37°C and lukewarm, but there are also heated baths, so it wasn’t an issue. If I had one wish: since I’m not fond of lukewarm water, I would have liked the heated tub to be larger. Meals were mainly simple countryside dishes, but everything was very delicious. Younger guests might find it a little light; in that case, I recommend ordering additional dishes. For us it was just the right amount—and we could get refills of rice—so we were very satisfied. Many of the staff were young, but they were always smiling and pleasant, with excellent attentiveness and consideration. This is an outstanding Accommodation that makes Japanese guests feel at ease—I hope it never changes. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

I wish I had come sooner.
Turn down a side path and you’ll find fresh greenery and a bridge straight out of a Ghibli film. There’s no litter along the way, and the buildings are clearly well cared for; the Room’s exposed beams are truly impressive. The bath setting is simple yet beautifully maintained, which really enhances the Onsen mood. We also appreciated having spare yukata available, and the hanten didn’t smell at all. Separate towel racks for bath towels (set high enough not to drag) and face towels meant everything dried quickly and stayed comfortable. All staff were wonderfully attentive with warm, genuine smiles. The meals featured satoyama-style dishes, and the rice was delicious. We enjoyed a lovely, refreshing holiday filled with everything that makes a great Japanese Accommodation special.

A Little Luxury Getaway
I visited after hearing the Onsen is good for eye care, and also to relax and recharge. The 20-minute walk from the bus stop to the Ryokan was very peaceful, with a river alongside—so clear you could see the riverbed. The food was delicious, and I felt as if I had slipped back into an analog era. I was able to unwind at a leisurely pace and felt truly refreshed. I would love to visit again.

Relax in a secluded mountain hot spring
Crossing a narrow bridge just wide enough for one car, you arrive at a charming Accommodation that feels full of character. The historic building is kept very clean, and all the staff were pleasant, so we had a comfortable stay. The free-flowing Onsen was plentiful; alternating between the lukewarm bath and the hot bath lets you soak for a long time. The meals featured many gifts of nature such as char and mountain vegetables, and the butterbur sprout tempura we ordered additionally was crispy and very satisfying. They also offer a local sake Tsururei tasting set, which went down easily. We also enjoyed feeding the Nishikigoi in the garden, which are said to be raised with Onsen water. One note: stink bugs appeared in various places indoors, so if you dislike insects you may want to take precautions. We would love to visit again in another season.

Accommodation for bath lovers.
Stayed at the newly built detached accommodation this time. There is a dedicated parking space for the detached accommodation, and being able to park right in front of the room was very convenient. Check-in is done at the main building, which has a charming entrance. Despite being located in a heavy snowfall area, the main building and its interior showed no signs of wear; instead, it felt clean and well-maintained. The room in the detached accommodation was recently built. The interior was spacious with high ceilings, creating an open and comfortable atmosphere. Like the main building, it had a sense of cleanliness that showed attention to detail. Enjoying beer on the terrace while listening to the stream's gentle flow was truly delightful. Meals included both breakfast and dinner featuring local mountain ingredients and specialties from Niigata—a renowned rice-producing region. Every dish paired perfectly with rice, making it hard not to indulge! Both taste and quality were excellent, leaving both heart and stomach satisfied. The hospitality left a great impression as well; young staff members worked diligently with professionalism. It wasn’t just about physical facilities but also about attentive service that made everything feel complete. As for bathing facilities—absolutely perfect! Everyone seemed to love Onsen here; most guests stayed immersed for at least 30 minutes or more. Listening to cicadas chirping, birds singing, wind rustling through trees alongside soothing sounds of cascading water while gazing at blue skies framed by lush greenery—it all made time slip away unnoticed as I felt completely rejuvenated in body and soul. Now I have another reason to visit Oku-Yuzawa again in the future! Looking forward to returning soon!

A heartwarming accommodation offering the best Japanese onsen and Niigata's local cuisine.
I have stayed at Kaikake Onsen, my heart's hometown, many times (starting with day-use bathing, over 8 times!). This time, I stayed in a newly added detached room. The riverside accommodation is perfect for someone like me who loves the sound of flowing water and used to enjoy stream fishing. Gazing endlessly at the river from the room brings me happiness! The Onsen is a mildly alkaline low-temperature spring and is famous as an "eye Onsen." Its components are similar to those found in eye drops! Soaking in the Onsen for about 20 minutes warms you up from deep within your body. Floating in the bath feels like being embraced by a mother's womb (though I have no memory of it!). The dinner and breakfast feature delicious dishes made with Niigata's local ingredients, including various types of Niigata sake—absolutely satisfying! The charm of this accommodation, along with the hospitality and kindness of all staff members, always leaves me deeply impressed. I will visit again each season! Thank you so much—truly grateful!

I heard it was lukewarm water.
A member of the Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns, this accommodation is a solitary house nestled deep in the mountains. We visited with prior knowledge that the onsen water might be lukewarm and beneficial for the eyes. Surprisingly, there were many guests despite its remote location, which raised our expectations. The meals featured an abundance of mountain delicacies that felt nourishing and were simple yet delicious. The freshly cooked Niigata rice was exceptional. While the onsen was indeed lukewarm, there was a warmer bath nearby for comfort. Soaking in the lukewarm onsen gradually warmed our bodies from within, encouraging long baths where time seemed to stand still as everyone lined up along one wall to relax. However, it felt slightly awkward as natural gazes turned toward the washing area while bathing due to this setup. The dim lighting in the bathhouse seemed like a thoughtful touch for privacy and relaxation. At one point, we cupped water from the hot spring's spout into our hands to apply it to our eyes—a unique experience since it's not something we usually do! Having undergone retinal detachment surgery in my past, I deeply appreciated this rare opportunity. The welcome drink was tea made from "eyedrop wood," which could also be enjoyed freely at hydration stations after leaving the onsen! According to online research, this tea is not only good for eye health but also supports liver function and helps reduce fatigue among other benefits—though its woody flavor might not suit everyone's taste preferences (understandably). My husband loved it so much he bought plenty as souvenirs. It's easy to see why so many guests become repeat visitors here!

It was very charming and atmospheric.
I finally had the chance to stay at Kaikake Onsen, a place I had long wanted to visit, and thoroughly enjoyed the snow-viewing bath. While the building and room were old, they seemed to have been well-maintained, preserving a nostalgic atmosphere while ensuring more comfort than expected (the windows were tightly sealed against drafts with sashes, the heating worked very effectively, and the futon on beds was especially appreciated by older guests). The meals provided were of sufficient quantity and quality considering the price. As for the much-anticipated bath, it seems that soaking for a long time in the low-temperature spring water is how connoisseurs enjoy it. However, I found it slightly too lukewarm for my preference and instead enjoyed both indoor and outdoor baths with warmed water (of course, I also tried soaking in the spring water when washing my eyes—it wasn’t too cold at all. In fact, compared to Shirahone Onsen’s famous lukewarm large open-air bath, this spring felt warmer). That said, despite carefully washing my eyes three times—once in the evening, once at night, and once again in the morning—I didn’t feel an immediate improvement in my vision (laughs). It seems like an extended stay would be necessary for proper therapeutic benefits. Next time I plan to book a Multiple Night Stay hoping for better results!

I would like to visit again.
I stayed at Okuyuzawa, Kaikake Onsen for the first time. The onsen, meals, and the hospitality of the staff were all excellent!! The staff were attentive during meals, offering refills of tea and rice. There seemed to be many young male staff, but they served with a smile, making the experience very pleasant. The onsen had various temperatures, and enjoying the onsen with a view of the snow was the best!!! Having been born and raised in Tohoku myself, there was a nostalgic atmosphere that felt familiar. I want to visit again soon!

Secret Onsen Stays Kaikake Onsen
The room was clean and spacious, and the meals were delicious and elaborate, which made us very satisfied. The salt-grilled iwana was excellent. It has become a property I would like to visit again.
