    It was a wonderful, relaxing accommodation.

    I stayed with my partner. The interior, meals, and service were all excellent. In particular, the relaxation area at the back of the building was a calming space filled with the scent of wood. The Room we stayed in was also very beautiful, with a view exactly as shown in the photos on the website. The food was, of course, delicious. The rice was perfectly cooked with distinct grains, and at breakfast I ended up easily eating two bowls along with a wide variety of side dishes. The staff who served our meals were polite and left a great impression. We also appreciated the complimentary water after bathing and the ice cream available for purchase at the front desk. The garden view from the semi-open-air bath was amazing. It feels a bit scary at night because it’s dark, but in the morning it’s very beautiful. The wooden steps from the indoor bath to the semi-open-air bath felt a little old and unsteady, so please be careful not to slip if you have any mobility issues. There is also a river right behind the building, making this Accommodation quiet and wonderful, surrounded by nature. I would like to stay here again when I visit Echigo-Tanaka.

    Time flows at a leisurely pace.

    A luxury to soak in the hot water while listening to Japanese bush warblers during the day and a chorus of frogs at night. The spring-inspired meals were also delicious and truly enjoyable. There aren’t any particularly special amenities or services, but everything feels comfortable—from walking barefoot on the tatami floors throughout the property to the subtle aroma in the air—and it’s genuinely relaxing. The building seems old, but it’s kept very clean, with no faults at all. It was so quiet that I could clearly hear the pleasant snoring from the next room—perhaps part of its charm. The Onsen is, of course, wonderful as well.\nI would definitely love to visit again.

    A Ryokan with an Onsen to enjoy the endlessly falling and accumulating snow.

    A quaint and traditional Japanese Ryokan with a cozy atmosphere. The service is not overbearing, but they attentively cater to necessary requests, creating a "just right" balance that allowed for a relaxing stay. The highlight was undoubtedly the snow-view Onsen, which was truly exceptional. Meals were carefully prepared and paired wonderfully with local sake. However, indoor entertainment options are limited, so it may not be suitable for those seeking such amenities. For those using JR Iiyama Line's Echigo-Tanaka Station, one point to note is the train schedule—departures are only available around 7 AM or noon. If you plan to have breakfast before leaving, there might be about a two-hour wait after the 10 AM checkout time. This accommodation offers a paid option to extend checkout in line with public transportation schedules (as mentioned in the room guide). It would have been helpful if this information was listed on the reservation site for better planning beforehand (though I might have simply overlooked it). Since I planned to leave on the 7 AM train, I opted for a no-breakfast plan and requested an onigiri bento box prepared the night before. The cold Koshihikari rice balls were still delicious—a delightful treat in their own way. This charming Ryokan exudes rustic charm and evokes nostalgic feelings despite being my first visit. It left me with an inexplicable sense of comfort and warmth—I would love to return again someday!

    Sophisticated and perfect for adults. We hope it remains a hidden gem.

    The room had three glass windows, including the front room. For heating, there were several options such as a kerosene heater and air conditioning, so it was never cold. While many accommodations cut costs these days, the hallway was equipped with both heating and speakers playing bird sounds, which created a soothing atmosphere. Throughout our trip, we kept saying how thoughtful "Shinano-so" was. During dinner, they prepared the futon in our room so that when we returned to rest, we could enjoy the view of the sky, trees, and snow through the large window—absolutely perfect. The glass wall area also allowed us to sit on chairs and relax while sipping drinks—it was very enjoyable. After breakfast, they kindly left the futon as it was so that we could continue enjoying the window view by sitting or lying down until check-out time. We also appreciated both the taste of meals and their beautiful presentation on dishes. For dinner, we tried additional orders of game sausage and pork sausage for comparison—the bear meat had a strong wild flavor which made it interesting; boar tasted like its relative pig—also fascinating! Even though I booked through IKYU.com, I could choose between coffee or milk for breakfast and pay by credit card—a great convenience since there aren’t many shops nearby. Unfortunately though—and this is my only regret—I didn’t use their bath much because I noticed some dirt in the women’s bath (which seemed like an exception). Next time I’d love to try again; my companion mentioned seeing koi fish there! From having water ready in our room to offering help with clearing snow off our car at check-out or keeping hallways warm—they provided attentive service that has become rare these days. When we arrived with heavy luggage (apologies for that!), a male staff member kindly carried them up to our room—thank you very much for your thoughtfulness! Everything about this accommodation exceeded expectations. Thank you for taking care of us!

    Onsen

    I stayed alone. The bathroom was small, but the quality of the hot spring water was excellent. However, in the evening, there were many local day-use visitors, making it difficult to use a changing basket, and their conversations were noisy, which made it hard to relax. Although it seemed like entry restrictions were in place at reception, they didn’t appear effective. Stopping day-use bathing after 4 PM might improve the experience. The meals—both dinner and breakfast—were enjoyable.

    The bath was not flashy, but the water was excellent. The meals were truly delicious... I would love to visit again.

    Good Onsen

    This was my first visit to Minami-Hatsu. I chose the "Rindou" room. The new room was well-equipped and very comfortable to relax in. However, I noticed creaking sounds when people upstairs moved or used the stairs, which was a bit distracting. The view was obstructed due to construction along the riverside, but that couldn't be helped. As for meals, the sashimi and meat portions felt a bit small, but there were various nostalgic side dishes that made me satisfied. In contrast, breakfast came with plenty of accompaniments for rice—almost too much! The onsen had a smooth and moisturizing texture and felt wonderful. Since it's a small accommodation, it wasn't crowded at all, allowing me to enjoy multiple visits. Choosing a good room allowed me to unwind and fully relax.

    My son said, "This is the best in Japan."

    I stayed in Niigata for a week for my son's ski certification. My son mentioned it was hard to find good accommodation around Yuzawa, so after searching through dozens of options online, we decided on "Echigo Tanaka Onsen Shinano-so." Although it takes over 40 minutes by car from Ishiuchi Maruyama, it was definitely worth staying there. My son praised it as "the best Onsen accommodation I've ever stayed at." I have also stayed at various wonderful Onsen accommodations like Fufu, but Shinano-so stands out in both atmosphere and service—it was truly exceptional. This time, we chose a No Meals Included Plan due to the sudden nature of our trip. However, next time I would love to stay with dinner included. I'm already looking forward to it!
