    Great value for money.

    The Onsen and meals were excellent. The private bath was also great. It was very quiet and relaxing. I would like to stay again if I have the chance.

    Cost-cutting is important, but

    I understand that cost-cutting is important for a company, but I’m not sure it’s worth focusing on it to the point that guests can clearly notice. Considering the price paid and how much we were looking forward to our stay, we often felt disappointed. The Onsen is wonderful, so it feels truly unfortunate that its potential isn’t being fully utilized. I hope to see improvements in the future.

    Luxury of Free-Flowing Hot Spring Water

    This time, I stayed in Room 106. The open-air bath in the Room is generously filled with free-flowing natural hot spring water—an absolute luxury. To be honest, the building is old, and there may be room for improvement in terms of service, but for this price, being able to enjoy this bath feels like great value. The meals are genuinely delicious, and I think the offerings are impressive. I would love to have piping-hot miso soup in the morning, so I’d be happy if only the miso soup could be served (or self-serve) rather than heated with solid fuel.

    A great-value Showa-era retro Hotel

    Thank you for providing Shuttle Service not only from Togura Station but also for the return trip, and for upgrading our Room. Since this Hotel is part of the same group as “Ryotei Takano,” where we stayed before, our expectations were high, so the meals did not feel particularly special. We noticed efforts to balance cost savings with improved service—such as complimentary coffee being available only at dinner and guests serving rice into the ohitsu themselves—but looking back, overall it felt like a Hotel with very good value for money. Although we were slightly bothered by noise from other rooms, the Room was kept very clean, the air purifier was running, and the temperature of the large public bath was just right. Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is said to have been a thriving entertainment district about 50 years ago, but today it offers nostalgic Showa-era streetscapes and scenery. We truly hope it continues to grow and thrive.

    Attentive service

    Although the property is old, it was well-cleaned. The Room had some minor dirty spots (like between the beds and around the toilet rim), but overall it was clean. I appreciated the thoughtful amenities like a cleaning cloth and a humidifier in the Room. The cleaning cloth was especially nice. Unfortunately, the bed wasn't very comfortable to sleep on. The bath was excellent. I chose a plan with breakfast included, but it lacked impact. The taste was average, and I thought having natto would be a good addition. I’d like to come back again with a No Meals Included plan next time.

    Traditional Onsen Ryokan. Some parts of the facility have poor air conditioning. The meals were delicious.

    The bath is excellent.

    We stayed at the accommodation as a couple. During check-in, there was a bit of confusion, which made us worried that our reservation might not have been completed. However, the owner personally explained the check-in process to us along with his business card. It seemed quite busy, and we felt rushed when deciding on the private open-air bath and meal times. When we wanted to discuss it together before deciding, they quickly moved on to assist the next guest for their check-in process, leaving us feeling a bit uneasy. Afterward, another staff member took over and provided very polite assistance, which was reassuring. Despite this initial experience, we were very satisfied with the room, meals, and baths. We enjoyed using the baths multiple times and appreciated having plenty of warm dishes for breakfast. The staff's service was also courteous throughout our stay. Some services we had been looking forward to seemed to have changed since July; some were no longer available or became paid options, which was slightly disappointing. However, we were still able to spend a relaxing and leisurely time overall.

    Highly Satisfied

    It was a rather spontaneous trip, and at the time of reservation, this was the only accommodation available for under 20,000 yen per night. Based on reviews, I had prepared myself for "limited meals" and "an old building," but in a good way, my expectations were greatly exceeded. While the building itself shows its age, the floor I stayed on had been renovated with even the carpet featuring a lovely design. The tatami in the room was new and smelled wonderful. The entire facility was impeccably clean. The meals were incredibly satisfying both in volume and taste—plenty to eat and drink to our hearts' content, leaving even heavy drinkers fully satisfied. Free soft drinks and beer for just 100 yen were definite highlights! Overall, while there wasn't excessive service, everything we needed was thoughtfully provided. It felt like someone very experienced with hotels had carefully planned every detail during renovations. They made excellent use of an older facility with creative ideas to ensure convenience and comfort. Although I mentioned there wasn’t excessive service, it doesn’t mean there was less hospitality—the staff were numerous, their responses polite, their smiles warm, and their attentiveness impeccable. The onsen is truly exceptional. Regarding the large public baths: while many might focus on Otohime no Yu (featured prominently), I found Ryugu no Yu (if I'm remembering correctly) much more spacious and comfortable despite not being pictured anywhere online. The private baths also featured adjoining rooms that added to their appeal. This is definitely an accommodation I'd love to visit again!

    The hot water is excellent!!

    I am a repeat guest. The food is average (but definitely not bad), and the onsen is truly amazing—absolutely no doubt about it. Also, the free soft drink vending machine is much appreciated. Overall, it's an onsen accommodation with great value for money.

    ◯Room The private open-air bath in the room had plenty of hot water, and despite the snow falling outside and the low temperature, it was always warm, allowing for multiple relaxing baths. The room was equipped with a humidifier, air purifier, coffee, snacks, and more. The bed was also very comfortable. Although the building might be old, it is well-maintained and clean. The view from the open-air bath when sliding open the fusuma door in the room was truly beautiful. Occasionally sounds from upstairs could be heard; this might bother some people. However, it was quiet at night while sleeping so I wasn’t particularly bothered by it. ◯Service & Hospitality The staff provided polite and pleasant service. In terms of amenities, there were free drink vending machines near reception as well as 100-yen beer options—very convenient! Some alcoholic beverages were even complimentary during dinner time; I especially enjoyed fruity craft beer which tasted amazing. Our plan included access to a private bath on the 6th floor featuring a cypress tub—it offered great views that we thoroughly enjoyed. ◯Onsen & Bathing Facilities The onsen had a pleasant sulfur scent with perfectly balanced water temperature for relaxation. There were large communal baths where gender alternated based on time slots so guests could experience different styles of bathing areas. ◯Facility While table tennis or billiards seemed available within facilities—I didn’t personally use them. Wi-Fi worked without any issues throughout my stay. ◯Dining Experience Most dining aspects followed self-service style (e.g., drinks station/self-heating dishes like miso soup using solid fuel). Everything tasted delicious—especially rice stood out being exceptionally good! It would’ve been nice if there were additional side dishes complementing rice further since its quality made me crave more accompaniments alongside meals! Also pouring miso soup felt slightly tricky due to current bowl design—a teapot-like container would improve ease-of-use here perhaps? Overall value-for-money exceeded expectations given flexible self-service arrangements weren’t bothersome whatsoever! With check-in starting at 2 PM & checkout extended till 11 AM under our plan—we fully relaxed during staycation moments spent here comfortably enough wanting repeat visits someday soon again surely!

    The onsen and rooms ...

    The onsen and rooms were both very satisfying at this property. The private bath, in particular, offered a special experience and was very relaxing. Thank you for the courteous service at the reception. I would like to repeat my stay.

    Slightly Sulfuric Hot Spring

    It was a relaxing and leisurely stay. Although there is some wear and tear due to age, there was a private ceramic bath, a well-stocked amenity corner, and a free drink corner, making the service aspect quite fulfilling. I think the satisfaction level would increase if the meals and atmosphere were improved a bit. The onsen is a nice sulfur spring, but there were many insects in the open-air bath, which was a bit troublesome. The indoor bath was relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you for taking care of us.

    The service is excellent.

    It was our first family trip with our 8-month-old child. After sightseeing, we arrived late for check-in, and the free private bath was fully booked for good times, so we had to reserve it for the next morning. Since we had to put the child to sleep, we reluctantly used the room's unit bath, but it wasn't thoroughly cleaned, so we had to clean it ourselves before using it. I assume that since it's an onsen property, people don't usually use the room's unit bath, so it was probably overlooked, but that was the only disappointment. After writing about it in the survey and leaving the property, we received an apology call that same day, and they assured us they would strive to prevent such issues in the future. We managed to handle it ourselves, so we didn't think much of it, but we were humbled by their apology. The private bath is for one hour, so it might not be enough time when entering with a child. Some people might wash in the room bath before going to the onsen, so if they can ensure thorough communication, there would be nothing to complain about. Other than that, the staff was warm and welcoming, always smiling, and attentive to our child's needs, allowing us to have a comfortable stay. After putting the child to sleep, I went to the large public bath and happened to enjoy it privately. When I woke up due to the child's night crying, I went again at midnight and found the public bath had switched genders, allowing me to enjoy it privately once more. Being able to use the large public bath 24 hours a day was incredibly appealing. I believe it helped soothe my tired body from parenting. The reasonable price and excellent cost performance were outstanding. Since we prioritized our child, we couldn't leisurely enjoy the meals, so we hope to visit again if we have the chance.

    We used it for the f...

    We used it for the first time as a couple. Although it was an old Hotel, we were allowed to use an upgraded Room upon check-in. It was a very spacious Room with a separate bedroom, allowing us to relax comfortably. My husband, who loves the large public bath, was satisfied with the private bath as well. Also, the food was served warm and delicious. There were various thoughtful touches, such as being able to choose a yukata pattern we liked and taking only the necessary amenities to the Room, providing sufficient service.

    We went with our 3-year-old child, and they prepared a spacious tatami room for dinner, allowing our child to play while we leisurely enjoyed our meal! The food was delicious! The hot springs were pleasant, and there was also a private bath, which was fantastic, so I would recommend it for families with children. It's a quick trip from Karuizawa!

    First time in Nagano Prefecture

    I was looking forward to seeing what kind of inn it would be since I booked online. The staff's response was very pleasant, and the bath was a hot spring that made my skin smooth, with good quality water. Both the room and the bath were clean, and I had a comfortable stay. I definitely want to stay there again.
