We enjoyed the Onsen and the meals.

There were four private Onsen baths, and each one was very clean and a pleasure to use—it really helped me unwind. I usually manage about three visits, but I wanted to try all four, so I pushed myself. The meals were truly delicious. They were mainly Japanese-style, with some Western-style dishes in between, so I enjoyed a great variety. The fish had absolutely no odor and was so fresh that I felt I had never tasted anything like it before—what a surprise. Dinner and breakfast rice and miso soup were also excellent, which I really appreciated. I would love to visit again if I have the chance.

    Spectacular Cuisine

This was my fourth visit in less than a year, and the dinner menu had changed from my previous three stays—an outstanding meal with fresh surprises even for a repeat guest. The opening dish began with Genovese: noodles made from udon flour coated in a fragrant basil sauce. The hassun course, presented in summery tableware with beautiful plating, was a delight to the eyes as well. Each item was delicate and deeply flavorful—perfect with drinks. One of the highlights, the sashimi, was not only impeccably fresh; it was so delicious that I found myself noticing the superb knife work—the cuts and thickness that brought out the texture and natural sweetness of each fish. The abalone, previously served as steak, came this time as coquille. After the rich white sauce, the abalone’s texture stood out clearly; once again I admired how thoughtfully it had been prepared—even down to its size and cut. It was so good it made me laugh while eating. The spiny lobster also changed from last time’s herb grill to deep-fried spiny lobster wrapped in wonton skin. This too was exceptional—the contrast between the crisp, delicate coating and the juicy meat was perfect. From the rich paprika sauce to the grilled summer vegetables on the side—and even the dishware and plating—it was truly impressive. The miso-grilled golden eye snapper enjoyed with delicious white rice was exquisite, with beautifully fatty flesh. The simmered daikon radish and squid served alongside went far beyond a simple side dish—the flavor soaked into the daikon perfectly, and the squid was cooked wonderfully tender. Because everything is so delicious, you naturally start paying attention to both culinary technique and presentation while you eat. It’s rare to find a meal that stimulates all five senses like this—and sharpens your own perception at the same time. I also tried an optional chef’s choice meat dish: Iberico pork. It came perfectly cooked with a sauce that suited it beautifully—completely satisfying. Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed an excellent stay. I’m already looking forward to my next visit—I’ve already made my Reservation. Thank you again for your hospitality.

    Thank you very much.

I checked in in the rain, and as soon as I entered, there was a smell like a pet shop, which I found strange. Perhaps it couldn’t be helped due to the high humidity and the carpeted floors. We stayed in a Japanese-Western style room, and the area near the door at the top of the stairs was filled with a fabric-softener-like scent. However, there was no odor inside the room itself, which was a relief. Dinner was served extremely quickly—new dishes kept coming out even though we hadn’t started on what was already there—and used plates weren’t cleared away, so they just kept piling up. The table never felt settled. As for the taste of the food, despite calling itself a “kappo inn,” it wasn’t particularly impressive; it was quite ordinary. We had the local fish platter Plan, and that part was good. According to IKYU’s classification, this is a “casual” Accommodation, so I understand that some things are to be expected; however, for this price there are better places to stay.

    True to its reputati...

True to its reputation as a culinary-focused Accommodation, the food was outstanding. While seafood is the main feature, I was impressed by the careful preparation that didn’t rely solely on the ingredients’ natural flavors. The seasonal presentation was also lovely. In addition to the sashimi, the herb-grilled spiny lobster and abalone steak were delicious. I especially loved the risotto beneath the abalone. I also thoroughly enjoyed all four private baths. There was usually one available, so I never had to wait. The temperatures seemed slightly different in each, and my favorite was the rock bath. The changing areas were also kept very clean and tidy. I’d definitely like to return.

    Kawazu Cherry Blossoms

It coincided perfectly with the peak Kawazu-zakura season, and after check-in I took a walk around the Accommodation and enjoyed the Kawazu cherry blossoms blooming along the river. Perhaps due to the outdoor temperature this time, the free-flowing hot spring water was quite hot and I couldn’t get in without adding cold water, but it warmed me thoroughly from the core. Because of the layout of the Room I stayed in, it was adjacent to the next Room, so I was bothered by voices from next door until after 11:00 p.m.; however, complete soundproofing is difficult, so it may be unavoidable. If you’re sensitive to noise such as sounds from neighboring Rooms, I felt that a Japanese-Western style Room offers more quietness, although it does mean a longer walk to the bath. I’d like to keep this in mind for future stays. The food was wonderful again this time, and I truly enjoyed every bit of it. This exceptional dining experience—delighting both my eyes and my palate—is irreplaceable, and I was completely satisfied. Not only dinner but also breakfast was excellent; above all, the steamed white rice was perfectly cooked and genuinely delicious, so I ate plenty even in the morning. I’d love to visit again when it gets cold.

    Fresh seafood!

The sashimi was delicious! They even labeled every type (with name tags), so it was easy to understand and enjoy each piece. Dinner included many dishes that didn’t feel strictly Japanese, and paired with wine it made me very happy... Breakfast was classic Japanese cuisine that looked healthy at a glance, including a plate with nine small side dishes. As expected from a kaiseki-style Accommodation! I liked the hinoki bath the most. I soaked in it many times and went home feeling refreshed. It’s a bit of a drive from central Tokyo, but the station is right in front, so next time taking the train might be a good idea.

    Revisit

After a wonderful previous stay, I returned for another visit. First, I enjoyed the Onsen bath, which felt completely private on a weekday. The cuisine was just as breathtaking as last time. The opening appetizer was shrimp taro (ebi-imo) manju—wonderfully delicious, with a deeply flavorful dashi and a pleasantly chewy texture. The hassun course was also beautiful to look at; its many flavors came together as a single, cohesive world that captivated both my eyes and palate. It was an outstanding dish—nothing unnecessary, yet clearly crafted with the care and effort it truly required. The sashimi was exceptionally fresh, expertly cut, and delivered the fish’s natural umami directly with every bite. The abalone steak, herb-grilled spiny lobster, and miso-marinated grilled golden eye snapper were just as memorable as before. The seasoning highlighted the ingredients perfectly, and each item was grilled to an ideal finish—one bite filled my mouth with flavor and made for a blissful moment. The final handmade dessert, a Mont Blanc, was also exquisite. With restrained sweetness that let the ingredients shine, plus smooth cream and a crisp texture, it was a wonderful dolce to end the meal. I would love to have this Mont Blanc again. Even on a return visit, this stay surpassed the emotion and excitement of last time.

    A Quiet Getaway

The meals are delicious. For dinner, reducing the portion size of each dish and adding one more item might be a good idea. Breakfast was a bit disappointing in terms of taste and creativity. The hot spring baths are great with natural flowing water, but all four baths feel quite similar. A little more variety would be appreciated.

The entire place is impeccably clean, offering a comfortable stay with just the right balance of privacy and thoughtful attention to detail. A Highly Satisfying Stay

I was drawn to the excellent reviews on IKYU and decided to visit for the first time, and it turned out to be an incredibly satisfying stay beyond my expectations. This is a small kaiseki-style Ryokan with only six rooms. Although the Japanese-Western style room we stayed in was located away from the private Onsen bath, requiring some use of stairs due to facility constraints, it didn’t bother us at all because we could enjoy the soft-textured Onsen privately—it was truly wonderful. For those who may find stairs challenging, I recommend choosing a room other than the Japanese-Western style type as they are on the same floor as the private Onsen bath. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the cuisine. Fresh sashimi served with freshly grated wasabi paired perfectly with sake. The abalone steak came atop ancient grain risotto, creating an exquisite combination I had never tasted before. The grilled spiny lobster dish showcased intricate preparation and exceptional flavor. As if that wasn’t enough, when paired with white rice, their miso-marinated grilled golden-eye snapper offered a simple yet deeply flavorful experience—the aroma of miso and rich taste of thick-cut fish left me in awe from just one bite! Even their handmade desserts were delightful; every dish brought immense satisfaction from start to finish. Breakfast featured a generously portioned grilled horse mackerel along with various side dishes that made white rice irresistible even in the morning. Before breakfast, we took a short three-minute walk from this accommodation down to a nearby beach where breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean unfolded before us. The staff maintained an impeccable balance between attentiveness and privacy throughout our stay, making it truly comfortable. This is an ideal accommodation for those seeking delicious cuisine or wishing for quiet relaxation amidst privacy-filled surroundings—it’s simply outstanding! I’m already looking forward to visiting again this winter season!

    A Long-Awaited Stay at a Ryokan

Recently, I’ve been staying at hotels, so this time I chose a Ryokan—a Kappo Ryokan. Katase-Shirata is the station after Izu-Atagawa. It was my first time getting off there. The station is 7 meters above sea level. Since I arrived early, I went to the Katase-Shirata breakwater where you can see Oshima Island. A few people were fishing leisurely. I also took a 30-minute nap on the breakwater under the clear blue sky with only the sound of waves. The accommodation is very close to the station, and I checked in early. It has a calm and refined atmosphere. My room was a Japanese-style room with two beds. On the same floor, there are four private baths with different designs. The hot spring water is slightly hotter and free-flowing; you mix it before entering. The baths are spacious enough and offer excellent water quality—I enjoyed three of them for a total of four times. Dinner was as expected from a Kappo Ryokan—heartfelt dishes made from local seasonal ingredients were served in various styles. With many accommodations now catering heavily to inbound tourists with overly elaborate meals, this felt comforting and authentic—a reminder of why Ryokans are so special. Breakfast also featured numerous carefully prepared dishes; for fish options like horse mackerel or others, I chose grilled kinmedai marinated in sake lees—it was outstanding! After leaving the accommodation, I visited Shirata River Waterside Park near the station—a surprisingly nice park despite its rural location! There was something that looked like a tea house but turned out to be an impressively clean restroom instead! Across Shirata River lies Shirata on one side and Katase on another—the riverside scenery with dogs being walked and gentle river sounds created such peaceful moments. I’ve explored much of Izunokuni-Hakone areas over time but found that just one stop away can lead to such serene places. As my travels have shifted towards enjoying accommodations and hot springs more than sightseeing as I've aged, this destination proved perfect for solo travelers seeking tranquility at both land and Ryokan alike. Thank you for providing such quiet moments—I truly enjoyed my stay!

    A cozy and relaxing accommodation

The onsen was excellent with natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source. However, all four baths were private baths, and it was a bit disappointing that there wasn't a large bath available for use at any time. The hospitality of the staff, including the proprietress, was pleasant, and the room was kept clean. As this is a kaiseki-style accommodation, the meals exceeded expectations with creative dishes and rare items that were visually stunning and incredibly delicious. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

    The cuisine is absolutely exceptional.

It was an incredibly enjoyable trip. The cuisine was absolutely exceptional, featuring creative dishes that highlighted the quality of the ingredients. The abalone surpassed anything I’ve ever had before. There were four types of private baths available, and we could use them anytime, which was very convenient. I visited with my partner, and she was extremely satisfied as well. This accommodation is especially recommended for those who are particular about food.

This was my second stay. As with the previous visit, both dinner and breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes, all of which were delicious. The Room and bath were well-maintained and clean, and the staff's attentiveness was excellent, making for a very comfortable stay. I also enjoyed seeing the adorable resident dog from across the hallway. I look forward to staying here again!

A tranquil and relaxing gourmet accommodation

While it may not offer the views or facilities found in other accommodations, it provides a peaceful and relaxing stay with minimal interaction with others. The meals offered at this price are exceptional value, and I felt the dining experience alone was worth the accommodation fee. Although family-run, the facility is impeccably clean and well-maintained, reflecting a true sense of hospitality towards guests. A truly wonderful accommodation.

    I felt truly relaxed.

Delicious seafood meals. The four private baths are spacious and relaxing. Cleanliness and thoughtful attention to detail with a touch of style, yet it feels like a cozy, homey accommodation. Perfect for adults looking to unwind. The meal portions were generous, so we couldn't finish the rice, but they kindly made rice balls for us to take back to our room. There’s a delicious coffee stand nearby that operates only in the morning; the staff can guide you if you ask. A short walk takes you straight to the sea, though it’s not visible from the room. Rooms are on the second floor with stair access only. Smoking is allowed outside at a designated area near the entrance. There are no shops or bars around, making this an ideal place for those seeking peace and quiet.

Neutral hospitality for solo travelers and first-time guests.

Sometimes, we all feel the need to take a step back from family or work and embark on a solo journey. This time, I chose to stay here for a little distance and perspective. ...To put it mildly, it was perfect. The facilities, such as the meals and private baths, were outstanding. But what truly touched me was the heartfelt hospitality of the proprietress and her team. From thoughtful seating arrangements in the dining area (guiding me to a discreet corner seat) to their attentive yet unobtrusive service—everything was impeccable. They even turned leftover rice into rice balls for me! I was deeply moved by how they treated everyone equally, whether regular guests or first-timers like myself—a rare quality that is not easily achieved. In the end, it's always these personal touches that leave a lasting impression. I sincerely hope this warm hospitality remains unchanged. Next time, I look forward to visiting with my family or friends—or perhaps even alone again! I eagerly await my return visit.

Warm hospitality and delicious seafood dishes

The accommodation has a historical charm, but the guest rooms, dining area, and baths (four private onsen baths) have been renovated and are very clean. As a kaiseki-style accommodation, the seafood dishes with extra care in preparation are delicious. Above all, the warm hospitality of this family-run establishment is exceptional. Despite an early morning departure for a trail running race, they kindly prepared breakfast for us. It was the best race-day breakfast we've ever had! Thanks to them, we were able to cross Amagi smoothly!

We were very satisfied again this time, thank you. The food is always excellent. We enjoyed all four private baths, which were clean along with the dressing rooms, and the view of the miniature garden from the baths was lovely. The staff's hospitality was wonderful, and we appreciated how quiet and relaxing it was inside the accommodation. On our way back home, we talked about visiting again in autumn or early winter. We look forward to staying with you then!

    A tranquil and relaxing accommodation

This was my first visit. I chose this accommodation after reading reviews about the private onsen with free-flowing hot spring water and the delicious meals. Thank you for accommodating a solo traveler. I was amazed by the great value for money. The room, bath, and meals were all excellent at this price point, which I truly appreciated. Now I understand why the reviews are so positive. Your hard work is evident and commendable. It seems to be a small, tranquil accommodation catering to adults. Since it’s a wooden structure, sounds from neighboring rooms can carry through, but it shouldn’t be an issue if there are no children staying. The staff were all friendly and provided excellent service. The private onsen was more spacious than expected and had recently been renovated, making it very clean. The temperature was just right as well. My room was near the baths on the second floor, so checking availability was convenient—this made it easy to enjoy multiple visits when unoccupied! As someone who loves baths, being able to use them as much as desired is wonderful compared to other accommodations where access might be limited despite having amazing facilities. The room itself exceeded expectations in size and cleanliness. Being located near the station meant that trains could easily be seen from an open window—but if that’s not preferred... For meals, I requested no sashimi since I didn’t want portions too large for me to finish; this adjustment worked perfectly—I even managed to enjoy some rice at the end! Personally loved the grilled miso-marinated golden eye snapper—it was rich in flavor and absolutely delicious! Next time I'd like to try different menu options or perhaps focus on sashimi dishes instead. I hope I'll have another opportunity to visit again in the future—thank you very much for everything!

    The nearest station ...

The nearest station is Katase-Shirata. This quiet, small unmanned station with sparse passengers evokes a sense of nostalgia as if seen in the past. In front of such a station stands an old-fashioned Ryokan, but inside it is filled with cleanliness, and the four private baths each have a slightly different charm where you can enjoy Onsen with soft spring quality. The highlight is the cuisine served in private dining rooms. The skills honed over years by two generations who trained at a long-established restaurant in Kyoto are remarkable. The sashimi platter featuring fresh local fish was exquisite, as were dishes like shiso Genovese using thin udon noodles and abalone steak accompanied by ancient rice risotto cooked al dente with liver for an exceptional texture. I was impressed by the beautiful fusion of Japanese and Western dishes such as kakuni enhanced by star anise aroma that complements the meat's flavor. Although there are no open-air baths overlooking the sea or picturesque gardens, this Property is ideal for seasoned travelers who wish to quietly enjoy gourmet food.

    This was my first ti...

This was my first time staying at the property. The room was a 10-tatami mat Japanese-style room. The view was nice with the occasional train passing by, and it was very quiet as you could hardly hear any noise. You could see the sky from the large window and the morning sun as well, making it a much more beautiful and lovely room than the photos on the site. It had been over ten years since I last slept on a futon, but thanks to the good bedding, I slept soundly. The meals were very satisfying, just as the reviews said. The horse mackerel for breakfast was plump and thick, the seasoning of the rolled omelet was to my liking, and the variety of delicious small dishes was also very satisfying. The bath was excellent with the temperature and water flow of the natural hot spring. The sand bath and cypress bath (I was pleased with the chamfered edges) were particularly good as I could relax by resting my head on the edge of the bath. The location was perfect, quiet despite being in front of the station, and close to the sea, making it great for a walk. I would love to visit again. Thanks to you, this was a wonderful solo trip. Thank you very much.

    Spontaneous Solo Trip

I had a weekend to spend alone as my family had other plans, so I decided to head to Izu and happened upon this property. I was torn between a large buffet-style property, but choosing this one was the right decision. It's also recommended for solo travelers. It's understandable that the room and bath don't offer a view, but it seems they excel in other areas. I enjoyed a different kind of time with the private onsen that allowed for a relaxing soak without worry, and the delicious meals served in a private room, prepared with care. Preferences may vary, but the bath temperature was perfectly managed, neither too hot nor too cold, allowing for a long soak, which was great. Although it was a futon in a Japanese-style room, the mattress must have been good as I slept soundly. During dinner and breakfast, I was touched by the thoughtful service, which made me very happy. I would love to visit this property again if given the opportunity. Thank you very much.

    Warm Stays

We stayed with our family for the New Year. Although the property is located in front of the station, it was quiet, and the sound of trains passing by was pleasantly resonant. The meals were well-balanced between Japanese and Western styles, with many seafood options, allowing us to enjoy dishes like sashimi and grilled fish. There was a menu, but we couldn't wait to see what dishes would come next. The herb-grilled spiny lobster and sea bream rice were especially delicious. The onsen was divided into four types, and choosing our favorite was one of the pleasures. It was our first time using the property, but the staff's warm and kind hospitality left a lasting impression. While chatting about wanting to go orange picking, we were introduced to a farm and enjoyed plenty of orange picking. Thanks to the connections from the property staff, it turned into a very warm and enjoyable trip. Visiting in a different season also seems like it would be fun. Thank you very much.
