The Onsen at Tamago-yu is a simple, nostalgic, wonderful bath.

The old-fashioned bath at Tamago-yu was simple and pleasantly nostalgic. The private open-air bath was also great. However, the outdoor pipes supplying the Onsen were made of plastic and felt cheap. It might be more atmospheric if they were covered with wooden framing or similar materials. The meals were a bit too large, and I couldn’t finish everything. It might be better to offer slightly smaller portions with a lower price. The menu itself had a nice local character. Most disappointing was that the lobby and hallways felt too cheap and didn’t match the quality of the Onsen. I felt the staff training was well done.

Thank you to everyone who continues to protect and preserve this renowned hot spring.

Thank you very much for taking such wonderful care of us. We were able to fully enjoy the outstanding quality of the Onsen at Tamago-yu. The milky white sulfur spring felt surprisingly gentle—hard to believe it is strongly acidic—and wrapped our bodies softly. It was a truly special Onsen that made us want to soak again and again. We felt that being able to enjoy such wonderful baths so comfortably is thanks to everyone who carefully cleans and manages the Accommodation each day. We sincerely appreciate your thoughtful attention, even in ways guests cannot see. We would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much.

Late May stay (Hike Mount Issaikyo)

The Facilities and meals felt very much like a classic Ryokan. The Onsen water quality was excellent—just what you’d expect from Takayu Onsen: milky white, soft water. The indoor bath is small but relaxing. There are three open-air baths, but you need to go down to the first floor once and change slippers. Two of them require walking along a paved path with some slope. It may be a bit difficult for elderly guests or those with limited mobility (and I think it would be completely unsuitable in winter). For Fukushima, the rice wasn’t very good—perhaps it was the way it was cooked. Considering the overall quality of the Ryokan, I felt the room rate was slightly high. After staying one night, I went hiking at Issaikyozan. A walk around Jododaira and Mt. Kofuji is fine even in sneakers, but Issaikyozan requires proper hiking boots, so please be careful. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the Ryokan along the Skyline mountain road. It was a clear Saturday, but on the way back I passed a police car coming up with sirens on and two ambulances. The Skyline has many luxury cars and motorcycles, and there may be quite a few drivers speeding on the mountain roads—please take care.

    Egg Bath

I’d always seen Tamagoyu on TV and had wanted to stay there, so I finally did. The Onsen was truly wonderful, and the private bath was amazing as well. Every meal was delicious, and breakfast was full of all my favorites. I was so happy. All the staff were kind, with lovely smiles—it was very soothing. I’d definitely like to stay again.

    It was very good.

There was still some snow left, and the bath was wonderful. I’d like to visit again. Although it is categorized as “Casual” on IKYU, the Room was cleaner and nicer than places that aren’t categorized as Casual. I wonder what criteria they use.

The voices from the neighboring room were very loud...

As always, the staff’s service was courteous, and the Onsen was excellent. However, voices from the next room were loud late into the night, and I had trouble sleeping. I contacted the front desk and they spoke to them, but it didn’t stop until around 1:00 a.m. In the end this was a matter of guest manners rather than Tamagoyu’s responsibility, but I hope you might consider soundproofing or similar measures. By the way, it seemed there were guests in the room on the other side as well, but that side was quiet.

    Couples’ Onsen Getaway

This was an Accommodation I had wanted to visit at least once. It was simple, and I enjoyed the Onsen. I tried all the snowy open-air baths and was very satisfied.

I had been struggling with chilblains, but they eased during my stay. The snowy scenery is also wonderful.

Accommodation to Fully Enjoy the Splendor of Hot Water

I had always wanted to stay at Tamagoyu Accommodation. I had heard great reviews about the onsen, but some reviews mentioned that the food wasn't very good, so I hesitated until now. This time, I initially planned to stay at Kawasemi and just visit Tamagoyu for a day trip. However, when I learned that there are seven baths including a foot bath, I decided to change my plan and stay overnight to fully enjoy the experience. It turned out to be an excellent decision. The onsen was truly amazing, with both outdoor and indoor baths offering unique charm. The most memorable was the small hut-style bath with a thatched roof. Quietly standing outside with only a simple tub inside, it evoked the serene atmosphere of an old healing retreat. In another open-air bath, water flowed between stones—one side appearing white while the other had a slight greenish tint—making me wonder if there were two different hot spring sources. The milky white water tinged with blue created by their mix was incredibly beautiful. As for meals, they were what you would expect from a typical "onsen accommodation dinner." However, since my expectations were low beforehand, I found them satisfying enough for this price range. For those who want to savor exceptional onsen water at their leisure, this is definitely an accommodation worth visiting!

Enjoy a reunion with six people.

Tamago-yu, which had long been a potential destination, became our accommodation by chance. Initially planned for the autumn leaves of Mt. Kurikoma, we decided to visit here instead. There was a spacious room that could accommodate all six members of our group, and we thoroughly enjoyed the baths. The staff were cheerful and friendly, making it an undoubtedly fulfilling reunion for our group.

An accommodation you'll definitely want to revisit.

Just about 2 hours door-to-door from Tokyo. Could Takayu Onsen be the most accessible natural sulfur hot spring with free-flowing, non-recirculated water and no added water from the city? With indoor baths available all night, even a one-night stay with a 10 AM checkout was enough to fully enjoy the Onsen. The meals, which I honestly didn’t expect much from, were absolutely delicious. The rice and beef were outstanding. While the building showed its age, it was clean, and the staff were cheerful and friendly, making for a very comfortable stay. I’ll definitely visit again!

Tamago-yu is a renowned hot spring.

The open-air bath and bathhouse were excellent, making it a wonderful Onsen experience. The meals and room were as expected for the price, so no complaints. I would love to visit again for the Onsen.

The accommodation after 10 years is as comfortable as before.

On the way back from Akita, I decided to stay at this accommodation after recalling its sulfur hot springs. It's an old accommodation but very cozy. While the outdoor open-air bath is famous, I was delighted that the indoor bath is available 24 hours. It offers a warm and comforting experience not found in modern luxurious accommodations. The meals are simple yet hearty, with no surprises but a genuine sense of hospitality. Although I usually don't drink much alcohol during dinner, I ended up drinking too much because of how happy I felt. The room we stayed in had twin beds, which was perfect as sleeping on tatami mats has become difficult for me physically. This is an accommodation that makes you want to come back again.

    What a wonderful hot spring!

I enjoyed relaxing in the Onsen. The Kaiseki cuisine was also satisfying. It’s a place I would like to visit again.

    Onsen is the best!

We stayed for one night from May 3rd with my elderly parents, daughter, husband, and a total of five people. My 82-year-old mother was overjoyed, saying the Onsen was amazing and felt wonderful. My father seemed to have enjoyed himself so much that he drank quickly and got quite tipsy. Since it was during Golden Week, I was worried it might be too crowded and noisy, but the staff were very attentive and polite, making it a very satisfying trip. Thank you very much!

Egg Hot Spring was wonderful, wasn't it?

The Skyline reopening is scheduled for next week, which we were unaware of—what a pity. We went hiking at Goshikinuma. This year, there was still plenty of snow remaining, making it feel like winter trekking. It was enjoyable. We also indulged in various hot springs.

The hot water is excellent! The breakfast was better than that of a luxury Ryokan. I want to visit again.

It was the best hot spring water!

It was my first time staying here, and from arrival to departure, I felt completely relaxed. The Room was clean, and the view from the window was truly unique to an Onsen, so I found myself gazing outside for a long time. It was such a quiet place, making it the perfect spot to unwind. Additionally, the Onsen water was milky white, warm, and so inviting that I wanted to stay in it forever. I definitely want to visit again.

    Normal

It was a milky white onsen, but there was nothing different about this onsen property. The previous day was at Kagetsu Highland Hotel, but for almost the same price, the room was a bit smaller.

    The best Onsen

I learned about Tamagoyu on TV, and after being on the waiting list, I stayed for one night and two days. The property has a nostalgic feel reminiscent of the Showa era, but it was very clean, as it seemed well-maintained. However, it was quite difficult to distinguish whether some of the switches in the room were for lighting or ventilation. Also, it seemed like there was originally a small TV, but the current TV was in a hard-to-see position, so it might be better to place it at a more visible position and height. The onsen with sulfur spring was perfect. The temperature might be a bit high, but it was comfortable for me. The price range was very reasonable, so I didn't have high expectations for the meals, but both dinner and breakfast were very delicious. I plan to visit again in a different season.

    First Time at Takayu Onsen

I stayed on Friday. I love onsens and use various onsens in Nagano, Yamanashi, and the Kanto area about 1-2 times a month, but the indoor bath here was particularly wonderful. Despite being acidic, it did not dry out my skin after bathing, and I was very satisfied with the high-quality onsen. Although the property is old due to its history, it has been renovated, so there are no complaints. The meals are not particularly noteworthy, but they are satisfactory. Perhaps due to a lack of staff, I had to wait about 5 minutes for a toast beer, which was a bit of a wait before the appetizers. However, the service was not bad, so if you love onsens, you won't be disappointed. I will visit again. Thank you very much.

    The hot water is excellent.

The Tamago-yu spring bubbling up next door, with its open-air bath that uses only free-flowing hot spring water, gave a sense of the era when it was first opened, which was nice. However, since the other open-air baths have the same setup, it was inconvenient in that regard. There was a noticeable imbalance in the level of attentiveness between the staff at the lobby and the part-time workers in the dining area, as well as in the quality of the Japanese meals and the state of the facility renovations.

Hot springs with a scent of sulfur

Tamago-yu, which we reached after a long drive in the rain from Yokohama, was a traditional inn with the scent of sulfur typical of hot springs. The water temperature was just right, making it pleasant to take multiple baths. However, due to the rain, we couldn't use the open-air bath, so I give it 4 stars, which is a pity. The thatched bathhouse was charming, and I had it all to myself. The meals were all delicious, but nothing particularly stood out. The local sake tasting was enjoyable.
