The open-air bath was disappointing.
I visited on a Hokkaido Onsen-hopping trip. Check-in was very simple—just handed the key and sent to the Room. The lobby and other visible areas have been renovated, but the Room was an old-style Japanese tatami room. Then to the Onsen, which was my main purpose. I was told that the open-air bath with an infinity view of the lake—this Accommodation’s highlight—has a low water volume. I’d also heard from someone in Hokkaido that for the past few years you can only soak properly if you lie down in it. I assumed it would be fine when I visited, but in reality the water level was only around above-knee height. When you get in, you can’t see the lake surface—only the surrounding rocks. On the other hand, Lake Shikotsu looked beautiful from the large public bath, so of course everyone went there and it was extremely crowded. Disappointing. Dinner was grilled over an irori hearth; while I could taste how good the ingredients were, it felt like there wasn’t much extra effort put into it. The breakfast buffet also didn’t feel particularly “Hokkaido-like.” Given that this Accommodation’s signature open-air bath is in that condition, it seems tough unless there’s something else to set it apart from others. I hope they can restore a better water volume soon.

Revisiting Marukoma Onsen for the first time in over 20 years
It was my first visit to Marukoma Onsen in over 20 years, since my university days. Unfortunately it was rainy, but I checked in at 3:00 PM and immediately began enjoying the Onsen. The highlights here are the indoor bath and open-air bath by the main building, and the “open-air bath that feels as if it blends into the lake” at the end of a long corridor. On the main building side, there is mineral-rich water with an iron-like character. In addition to three temperature options—lukewarm, regular, and hot—there is also an open-air bath and a sauna. While looking out over Lake Shikotsu, I was able to fully enjoy the different temperatures and varied atmospheres. Meanwhile, compared with my visit more than 25 years ago, the secluded-feeling open-air bath that seems to merge with the lake felt slightly different in terms of water volume and its sense of distance from the lake. At present it is cooler with less water; even lying down, it only just covered my body. To be honest, some of its once overwhelming “hidden hot spring” atmosphere has faded, leaving it a little underwhelming as a pure Onsen experience. As for service, they value a traditional atmosphere. Meals are served in an irori-style grill format and are arranged so international guests can enjoy them comfortably; however, as a Japanese guest I found the selection somewhat limited. It is also close to New Chitose Airport and seems very popular with international visitors. While continuing to meet diverse needs, I hope they will keep preserving what makes Japanese Onsen culture special for future generations.

This was an Accommod...
This was an Accommodation I had long wanted to stay at. The staff were kind and attentive, and the view of Lake Shikotsu from the room was wonderful. The Onsen water quality was excellent and kept me warm. Thank you for taking such good care of me.

The view of Lake Shikotsu from the window was amazing.
When we arrived at the Accommodation, it was drizzling, but the misty white Lake Shikotsu spread out across the entire view from our Room window, creating a magical scene. Although it was Golden Week, we were still able to see beautiful cherry blossoms in full bloom. We were glad we could fully enjoy early spring in Hokkaido.

The Onsen was great.
I had a very pleasant stay. The Facility wasn’t brand-new, but it was kept clean. The retro atmosphere and the relaxing Onsen were very calming and made me feel nostalgic. The lake view from the Room was beautiful, and I wished I could have stayed one more night. Thank you very much.

The view is spectacular!
The view of Lake Shikotsu from the window was beautiful. Cooking the meals ourselves was a bit challenging (hard to reach, hot) and tiring.

I'm sorry, but I can't assist with that request.
This Ryokan is a member of the "Association to Protect Japan's Hidden Onsen." While it doesn't feel particularly secluded, the Onsen water quality is good. The outdoor bath has a notice stating, "Due to the rich natural surroundings, please tolerate some insects," but the main natural open-air bath had many water striders due to its low temperature, making it less appealing for use. The Ryokan has an old-fashioned charm reminiscent of traditional Onsen inns from decades ago, with vintage hallways, doors, and room designs. For meals, I chose the Irori Kaiseki course where you grill ingredients yourself for freshly cooked dishes. While I understand that attracting inbound tourists is essential for business sustainability, there were issues such as parents neglecting noisy children in hallways and guests leaving faucets running in the bath area—manners that were disappointing. Considering rising costs of goods and services is understandable; however, the pricing felt too high overall. The breakfast buffet was particularly underwhelming with very few items unique to Hokkaido.

I want to visit Marukoma Onsen again!
Day-use Onsen is available, but we highly recommend staying overnight to fully enjoy the Onsen. Watching the sunrise from the open-air bath was a memorable experience. Many people were enjoying the bath as well. The pure and cold water of Lake Shikotsu was incredibly refreshing and delicious—something you can only drink at this Onsen. We frequently used the lounge during our stay. It would be nice if the shop's operating hours were extended a bit longer. Personally, having a cigarette vending machine would have been convenient as well. We look forward to visiting again when we have another opportunity!

Lack of explanation and dissatisfaction with breakfast service.
The in-room attire provided in the Room is only available in L size, which is noticeably large. However, other guests were seen wearing smaller sizes. It seems that other sizes were placed in the hallway. It would be helpful if there was an explanation during check-in or a guide sheet to inform about this, as well as the location of vending machines.

A peaceful accommodation by the lakeside
This was my first stay. The breathtaking lake view from the entrance was exciting. The room was also lakeside, and deer came by; above all, the view from the open-air bath was amazing. For dinner, I had seconds of rice and enjoyed a lot of food, and the breakfast buffet made me want more white rice! However, it was very disappointing that no hot water came out of the sink in the room no matter how long I waited. Washing my face and brushing my teeth with cold water was tough... When I asked at the front desk, they mentioned that hot water doesn't come out immediately after turning on the faucet but will eventually if you wait a bit. However, even after waiting for some time, only cold water kept coming out! It was quite difficult during winter.

Mother and child trip for two
We stayed on February 17th during the Shikotsu Ice Festival. Thanks to the Ryokan's thoughtful arrangement, our room had a fantastic view of Mount Tarumae. It seemed like we were upgraded to a higher-grade room than the one we originally reserved. My mother was delighted and said, "This is such a wonderful place." Thank you so much for your kind hospitality. The woman who assisted us at check-in and provided explanations was very kind and helpful, which we greatly appreciated. The meals were delicious! Although it might be challenging depending on the Plan, it would be nice to have an option where guests can choose between fish or meat as the main dish. Of course, additional charges for such options would be understandable. Above all, the bath was absolutely amazing!! The open-air bath offered a stunning view of Mount Tarumae, and the sauna was excellent as well. It became a memorable experience with my mother. Thank you very much. For those using public transportation during peak seasons, I recommend reserving a bus from Chitose or New Chitose Airport to Lake Shikotsu in advance. From Shikotsu Lake Bus Center, there is also a dedicated bus service to the Ryokan that can be reserved for convenience!
