    The bath was excellent, and the service was outstanding.

    Both my sister and I have trouble with our legs and hips, so we love traveling from Hokkaido to Kyushu during long holidays in search of 100% free-flowing hot spring baths. During the Obon holiday, this was one of the Accommodations we found by searching IKYU.com for “100% free-flowing hot spring” for three consecutive days. We especially love milky-white 100% free-flowing hot springs, and the photos featuring Zao beef sealed the deal. In reality, both the large public bath and the private bath were outstanding, and the meals we had been looking forward to were also excellent. An Accommodation where you can truly feel the staff’s heartfelt hospitality—something rarely found in today’s Hotels or Ryokan.

    Highly satisfying.

    The Onsen water is excellent. The renovated Room was also clean. The meals were delicious, and I’m glad I stayed.

    It was a wonderful Onsen.

    I made a Reservation because I was drawn to the Onsen, and the Room was very clean and comfortable. I was able to make four Reservations for the private baths and fully enjoy all of them. I would love to visit again.

    Delicious cuisine

    I have stayed here many times. Among the Onsen in Zao, the water quality is excellent, and Tsuruya’s baths suit me perfectly. There are also four types of private baths, so you can relax and enjoy them at your own pace. The food is incredibly delicious—every meat dish is generous in portion size and so tasty that you’ll want to eat it again right away. This time I had the Zao beef steak; it was very tender and wonderful with a variety of flavors such as lemon butter and wasabi. I will definitely visit again. A Multiple Night Stay is also recommended.

    The Facility was old...

    The Facility was old, but the Onsen was very good. The toilet bidet did not seem to work properly. All the staff were kind, and I was able to relax. Thank you very much.

    The Onsen is amazing.

    Second visit. I absolutely love the baths here. The Room was clean and spacious, and the staff were kind, attentive, and cheerful, so we had a very pleasant stay. For dinner, we chose the sukiyaki course and the shabu-shabu course. The Zao beef was delicious, but it would have been even better if there had been tofu or mushrooms as side dishes. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Excellent access from the bus terminal, especially convenient during the snowy season.

    Located right in front of the bus terminal from Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen, this accommodation boasts an excellent location. It is perfect for enjoying winter activities in Zao, such as skiing. A free shuttle bus operates to the ski slopes and the Juhyo Ropeway, making it very convenient. True to its reputation as an onsen-focused accommodation, the onsen features exceptional water quality. For those who wish to enjoy sulfur hot springs, this is an unparalleled choice. While it is a mountain hotel and does not offer the stylish and sophisticated services of urban hotels, you can expect warm and heartfelt hospitality here. They provided helpful information over the phone before our trip began, including local weather updates and important tips for the Juhyo tour (rubber boots are essential), which was greatly appreciated.

    The hot water is excellent!

    The Ryokan exudes a nostalgic charm reminiscent of the past. The hostess was kind, and we were warmly welcomed by everyone. We changed our dinner to meat dishes at the last minute, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The meal included steak and sukiyaki, and the filet steak was so tender that my wife was thoroughly satisfied. The hot spring water is acidic with a light sulfur scent. We fully enjoyed both the large public bath and the private baths. We look forward to visiting again.

    It was excellent.

    "If you hurry to your room, you can catch the sunset," they told us upon arrival at the accommodation. From the large window, we enjoyed a stunning view of the sunset sinking behind the mountains. In the morning, a sea of clouds spread out, and steam from onsen baths could be seen here and there, creating a refreshing start to the day. The natural hot spring bath was incredibly relaxing, and the meals were delicious. The facility was clean, and all staff members were exceptionally kind. Everything was perfect. I would love to visit again!

    A Cozy Accommodation

    It was a relaxing accommodation with a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. There were four private baths, a large public bath, and an open-air bath, allowing us to fully enjoy the wonderful onsen. The room had been renovated, making our stay very comfortable. Above all, the staff were exceptionally pleasant... it was an accommodation we would love to visit again.

    Warm Accommodation

    The Onsen, cuisine, and room were all wonderful. Above all, the staff at the accommodation were natural, warm, and truly healing. In an era where check-in and check-out are becoming more mechanical in many places, this was a kind and exceptional accommodation. I would love to visit again during the snowy season.     Truly relaxing!

    The newly renovated room is very clean and beautiful. Dinner and breakfast are served in the room, allowing you to relax at your own pace, and the meals are delicious. The local steak was impressive with its 200g portion size. The open-air bath and private Onsen were exceptional. The staff provided friendly and warm hospitality. Tsuruyaryokan is a wonderful Ryokan that makes you want to stay again.

    Off-season Zao Onsen, keep going!

    For the second night of our Yamagata trip, we stayed at a Ryokan in Zao Onsen. Since June is the off-season, the onsen town was very quiet with few tourists, and it seemed that all guests were gathered on the 6th floor due to low occupancy. At check-in, there were only two staff members—a middle-aged woman at the front desk and a middle-aged man managing parking. Despite having few guests, their response felt slightly rushed but not unpleasant. The room required switching elevators during transit. It was fairly clean, spacious, and comfortable. The Haagen-Dazs vending machine was also a nice touch. The Onsen included a private bath that could be reserved for free for 50 minutes per group. With so few guests staying, both the large public bath and outdoor bath felt like private spaces. For breakfast, there was a wide variety of dishes including croissants—quite impressive for an Onsen Ryokan breakfast. What surprised us most was during checkout when about 6–8 people (likely family members of the management) came out to see us off. It made me wonder why they couldn’t have had more staff available during check-in as well. Managing such a large Ryokan during the off-season must be challenging; I hope they continue doing their best!

    Onsen and Zao beef are exceptional.

    I chose this place based on a recommendation from a friend living in Yamagata, and the polite phone service left a great impression. The recently renovated room was comfortable, but the highlight was definitely the natural flowing Onsen and the Zao beef steak. The Zao beef, with its tender lean meat, was exceptional—I thought it deserved more promotion, but I heard it's not widely available even locally. The private bath with a view of the Zao mountain range from the window was absolutely stunning. I will visit again!

    My first stay in Zao was amazing.

    This was my first trip to Zao, and I stayed at this property. First of all, the bus terminal is right in front, making transportation very convenient and helpful! I was feeling down after losing my earmuffs on the bus, but the ryokan staff kindly supported me, which made me happy. As per the reviews, I think the customer service is excellent. The quality of the onsen water and the meals in the room were both superb! The newly established, clean room offered a great view of the onsen town, and I was glad I chose this room. Please let me use this property again when I come to Zao!

    It was a good Stays.

    It was a good property with high hospitality. The meals were focused on the main dishes without any unnecessary items, and we thoroughly enjoyed the Zao beef. We were able to enjoy the wonderful onsen and skiing. Thank you very much.

    A property where you can truly relax.

    I chose Tsuruya, which I have visited in the past, to let my friend from afar fully enjoy Zao Onsen. The milky white, wonderful onsen and the relaxing private bath, the warm hospitality with just the right distance, and the unpretentious, comfortable room. My friend was very pleased and satisfied. It was truly great to choose this property among many stays. I will definitely visit again. Thank you very much.
