Exquisite Azumino-grown vegetables! A forest Hotel where you can enjoy the starry sky and Onsen

Set in the forest, it offered beautiful stargazing at night and a very quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The Onsen was excellent—especially the spacious public bath for unwinding—though the open-air bath is on the smaller side. The meals were outstanding, with particularly delicious fresh vegetables from Azumino that really showcased the quality of the ingredients. One thing to note is that wearing a yukata is only permitted between your room and the Onsen, so you’ll need to change clothes each time you go to the dining area or front desk, which can feel a bit inconvenient.

    The customer service was disappointing.

At dinner, I ordered a 6,600-yen Sauvignon Blanc, but a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon was brought to me, and I was told that since it was the house wine, tasting was unnecessary. Also, the Room cleaning was insufficient, and the curtains and tatami mats were dirty. When I woke up in the morning and opened the window, there was a hornet’s nest under the eaves, so I quickly closed it. The lobby and restaurant were clean and comfortable, but it was very disappointing that Room maintenance was not well taken care of.

    A Pleasant Surrounding Area

It was cool and comfortable compared with the intense heat down below. At night, the outdoor air was surprisingly cold—beyond just cool—but it was refreshing to feel that crispness again. Also, from the room window we occasionally saw two monkeys grooming each other, which reminded us of how rich the surrounding nature is.

    Great.

The full-course dinner in the evening was our child’s first experience, and it was a wonderful one. Everything at breakfast was delicious. The restaurant staff were warm and attentive, which really impressed us. We would definitely like to visit again.

    Glad to hear that.

It was a lovely Hotel and everything was perfect. One of the staff members was from Osaka (from our neighborhood), and they were very kind to us. We will come again next year.

I’d love to stay here again, but…

First, I arrived early at around 2:00 p.m. There was no one at the front desk, so I called out loudly, “Excuse me.” I was told they were in a meeting and to wait on the sofa. The sofa was dirty with grime from hands, so I avoided sitting on it.

Everything about this Hotel was attentive and courteous.

I happened to find this site and decided to stay here. The Facility doesn’t feel brand-new, but it is well maintained and very clean, so I had a comfortable stay. Dinner was a French course meal and it was excellent. Breakfast is buffet-style; there was an impressive variety of vegetables, and I was surprised at how carefully prepared each Japanese dish was. They even made small rice balls right in front of me—I ended up eating them even though I was already full. The bread was also wonderful, with great honey and jam that I couldn’t resist. They also upgraded my Room from a Western-style room to a Japanese-Western room, which made it very relaxing. The only slight disappointment was that the towels were thin, but otherwise I feel I found a truly lovely Hotel. If I have the chance, I would definitely like to stay again.

    Disappointing

Although this Hotel is featured in every guidebook and I had high expectations, it was disappointing in every respect. The Room layout—one bedroom plus a tatami sitting area—was inconvenient. The toilet is separated from the sink by a corridor and has no hand-washing basin, so you have to go to the washbasin area every time to wash your hands. The design feels outdated and has not been properly renovated. The biggest inconvenience was that you cannot go to the lobby or dining room wearing a yukata. You can go to the bath in a yukata, but you have to change clothes before meals. For a Hotel that isn’t particularly upscale, this rule is simply inconvenient. The bath is also far away and requires a long walk. The complimentary drink service provides two metal tokens, allowing only 2–3 types of wine and juice, which felt stingy. The breakfast buffet was acceptable. Overall, the staff response and service were mediocre, and I would not return.

    It was excellent.

I visited for a quiet getaway. There was less snow than I expected, but the scenery and icicles were beautiful, and I spent a truly relaxing time. The meals featured plenty of local ingredients, which I enjoyed. Everyone at the Hotel was friendly while remaining professional, and I would like to visit again in another season.

The French dinner we were looking forward to was disappointing. Additionally, the bath was too far away, making it inconvenient to visit more than once.

    A Relaxing Hotel

The atmosphere was very calm and relaxing as I had expected. The bath was great, and the Japanese cuisine was delicious. Breakfast was a buffet with a wide variety of dishes, and I was pleasantly surprised by the handmade yogurt. I would love to stay here again next time!

It was a lovely Hotel. The service was warm, and the meals were delicious, enjoyed in an elegant dining room. The bath facilities included a large public bath and an open-air bath, but the changing area and washroom for the open-air bath were somewhat small, which might be the only drawback.

Next time, I want to stay and relax at the accommodation.

After checking the weather forecast, I decided to suddenly head to Hakuba the next day and made a same-day reservation for accommodation while traveling. Driving through dark mountain roads, I finally arrived at the hotel. When I checked in, I was surprised to find that not only did it have a place to stay but also an onsen and an open-air bath. The next morning, when I went to the dining hall for breakfast, I saw a beautiful garden with lots of greenery. It was such a lovely hotel that I thought about staying here for several nights and relaxing more during my next visit.

I had a very comfortable and pleasant stay.

The building shows its age, but the exceptional level of hospitality more than makes up for it, making for a very comfortable stay. One of the highlights was enjoying a glass of wine after dinner while sitting on the garden chairs in front of the lounge, feeling the cool breeze—a perfect moment to refresh. The soothing scent of firewood from the garden bonfire added to the experience. This has become one of the accommodations I would love to visit again.

    Enjoyed the summer mountains.

I had an enjoyable summer vacation. Overall, I am satisfied, but there are a few points I would like to mention for improvement: 1. Regarding the room cleaning: There was leftover trash, and the coffee server still had a used coffee pod from the previous guest. 2. About the birthday cake for my child: The cake was brought out immediately after we started eating (without candles) and it felt rushed into taking photos. If possible, it would be better to bring out the cake with candles at dessert time after finishing the meal. 3. Complimentary wine coins: We received coins for two free glasses of wine per person, but drinking four glasses in two days was too much for us. While we appreciated being able to exchange them for juice upon departure, exchanging a 500-yen coin for tube-packaged juice felt disappointing—canned juice would have been preferable. 4. Onsen foot mats: The foot mats were very wet and uncomfortable to use. Nowadays, there are highly absorbent individual foot mats available; considering this option would be appreciated. 5. Breakfast croissants: Last year during our stay, freshly baked croissants were served from a wagon directly at our table while still hot—a memorable experience we looked forward to this year as well—but unfortunately that service was no longer available and they were only warm this time around. It would be wonderful if this service could return. Overall, I am satisfied with my stay—the meals were delicious—and I enjoyed spending a cool summer while visiting Kamikochi again! I look forward to staying here again in the future! Thank you very much!

    There was no prior explanation.

The air is fresh, and it’s a great location. However, due to the large number of guests, the explanation might have been insufficient. I was surprised by the waiting time for breakfast. It would be helpful if you could inform us in advance to reserve not only dinner but also breakfast times. Some travelers may be in a hurry during their trip. In the end, I had to cancel the reservation for breakfast. It was disappointing since there were impressive photos in the brochure.

Despite being in the best location, it was unfortunate that we couldn't enjoy the beautiful scenery due to continuous rain. However, the breakfast was excellent with a wide variety and very delicious. The room showed some signs of aging, but there was nothing particularly concerning. One thing that should be addressed urgently is the floor in the bathroom of Room 407 (if I remember correctly), which creaked loudly and startled me. Since it's one of the most frequently used areas, I believe it would be better to fix it promptly for future guests' comfort. On that day, as there seemed to be many guests staying, I refrained from mentioning it not to cause inconvenience to others. If this issue is resolved, I would love to stay again on a sunny day!

The French dinner was exceptionally delicious. Conversations with the floor staff were enjoyable, and I had a very comfortable and pleasant time. The Facility is slightly aged, but the surrounding natural environment is excellent. It is easy to understand why the current Emperor visited twice during his time as Crown Prince at this wonderful Hotel.

    Weekend stay with 4 friends

The room was spacious, divided into two large zones with four bedrooms, and it was excellent. The meals (French cuisine) and wine were delightful, and the evening garden bonfire created a great atmosphere. We fully enjoyed the resort vibe. The only minor drawback was that the large public bath and open-air bath were a bit far apart. Overall, it offered great value for money and made for a fantastic weekend. Having a bar would have made it even better.

I had a relaxing time after a long while.

My son, who works overseas, returned home for a vacation, and for Mother's Day and Father's Day, I expressed my wish to visit Azumino. That’s why we chose this Hotel. The staff were kind, and the meals—both dinner and breakfast—were delicious. They made great use of ingredients unique to Azumino, which was wonderful! At first, I thought the bath might be a bit far away, but it was fine once I got used to it. I enjoyed both the large public bath and the open-air bath once each. Although I'm not much of a drinker, I love cider, so having it available during dinner made me happy—I even bought some as souvenirs. I also deeply appreciate how they promptly sent my son's forgotten item by the morning before he returned overseas.

A hotel that needs one more step overall.

The room decor was outdated, and even in the Japanese-Western style room, the slippers were reused. Despite this, you couldn't go to the restaurant or lobby in a yukata, making it unclear whether it was an onsen or a hotel... Perhaps it's been the same since the Showa era. The onsen and meals were crowded due to the long weekend, which was stressful. It seemed that breakfast replenishment couldn't keep up. Many hotels provide cups to take back to the room to avoid lingering during busy times... I didn't wait, but the person behind me seemed to be waiting. It would be nice to have some measures to avoid waiting during check-in and check-out. "You will be the fourth to check in, so please wait in the lobby"... I waited on a sofa a bit far away because there were other waiting guests... The call was made from a desk quite far away, loudly calling names... If you're not paying attention, you won't hear it. The lack of privacy is also very Showa. You also have to wait for check-out. Since the Hot Spring Tax is charged, many people have to go through the desk. However, there is a key drop box next to the front desk for those who don't need to settle their bill... It's a Showa-style setup with many group tours. Perhaps it would be good to encourage guests to settle their bills in advance? I think those who stay during relatively quiet weekdays will be quite satisfied with the hotel. Please consider various measures for busy times.

    A good old Stays

The atmosphere from the facade to the front and lobby was pleasant, and the service was attentive and made a good impression. I had Western cuisine, and the staff not only introduced the dishes but also engaged in lively conversation, making it an enjoyable time. It was the first time using the property since my daughter was in kindergarten, and she will be starting her job next year, but I felt like I could use it every year. We stayed in a Japanese-style room, and although the room felt a bit aged, it was comfortable. It seemed like they were struggling with a staff shortage, but I hope they continue to maintain the tranquil atmosphere of this property nestled in the forest.
