You can feel the history.
The service was attentive and excellent from check-in to dining. Detailed explanations were provided throughout the accommodation, offering a sense of history everywhere. The quality of the hot spring water was exceptional and rare to find elsewhere. I would love to visit again in a different season.

"Matsunoyama Snow Stories"
In February, when I visited Matsunoyama, it was covered in heavy snow, and the accommodation seemed buried in it. Due to the Joetsu Line being suspended by heavy snowfall, I was anxious about whether I could reach Muikamachi by bus, but I managed to get there and experienced the deep snow as expected. The medicinal bath after a long journey was amazing; its light green water warmed my chilled body thoroughly—it was worth staying. The wooden three-story architecture I had been looking forward to featured intricate details, snowy views from the room, and large icicles—truly unique to winter. I might visit again in a season without snow to see the entire building more clearly.

The hot water is excellent.
Arriving at the accommodation on a slightly rainy and chilly afternoon, we were greeted by lingering snow that reminded us of winter. We quickly headed to the onsen. The onsen water, as described, originates from seawater heated and sourced from 12 million years ago. The bath had a slightly hot temperature with the characteristic saltiness of chloride springs. After soaking for a while, I felt my body lighten upon stepping out of the bath. It was incredibly effective in relieving muscle fatigue instantly. For dinner, we enjoyed Matsunoyama's local sake "Matsukaze," a rich and flavorful masterpiece that paired perfectly with mountain vegetable dishes like fukinoto (butterbur sprouts). My wife chose "Zen," a white wine crafted by an old winery in Joetsu's Iwanohara region, which she thoroughly enjoyed. We spent our time relaxing at this quiet accommodation nestled in the mountains, appreciating its focus on local ingredients and its highly beneficial onsen. Before leaving the next day, we were shown one of the guest rooms in the main building registered as cultural heritage for evening views. The "Kanrei Room" truly felt like a cultural treasure—well worth seeing and even available for stays! It became a cherished memory for us. On our way home, we stopped by a liquor store recommended by the innkeeper to purchase "Matsukaze" as a souvenir.

Finally made it!
I was able to stay during the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, which I had longed for. The property is well-maintained and is irresistible for those who love properties with a rich history. The meals were delicious, and the starry sky was beautiful. We are very satisfied and would like to visit again.
