    A Nostalgic Accommodation

    A cozy, family-run Onsen Accommodation with a warm atmosphere and a nostalgic Showa-era charm. The meals were outstanding, and the open-air bath was more than satisfying. The proprietress’s tea room next to the entrance was a relaxing space.

    I stayed at the acco...

    I stayed at the accommodation to attend a concert held in the ryokan's lobby. The program included: Kosaku Yamada's "Akatombo," Rentaro Taki's "Kojo no Tsuki," G. Charpentier's "Louise," Wagner's "Tannhäuser," Puccini's "Tosca," Verdi's "Don Carlo" and "Il Trovatore," and Teiichi Okano’s “Furusato.” There might be some omissions. It was a duet concert featuring a baritone and soprano, with powerful performances that deeply moved my partner, who is passionate about songs. While I am not particularly interested in vocal music, I still enjoyed it to some extent. Coincidentally, I had been listening to Charpentier’s works (opera and religious music) recently, so I was surprised when one of his pieces was performed—though it turned out to be by another Charpentier! It was my first time hearing it, but it was unexpectedly delightful. The close proximity and unrestrained volume made for an impressive experience—perhaps even overwhelming at times! As I listened, I imagined how these performances would sound in a theater setting. My partner found the concert incredibly moving due to their love for vocal music. Overall, staying here for the concert turned out to be worthwhile. As for the ryokan itself—it exceeded my expectations in cleanliness; much more modern than anticipated. The interior felt as fresh as that of a new ryokan. However, rooms with beds lacked windows almost entirely, creating an unexpectedly strong sense of confinement. The food was delicious but might feel insufficient for gourmet enthusiasts. On the other hand, the private onsen facilities were exceptional with an excellent atmosphere—a definite highlight of this accommodation. In my opinion: 1) The lobby concerts 2) The private onsen 3) The clean interior design ...are this ryokan’s standout features. While dishes like sashimi were fresh and met certain standards overall compared to other accommodations I've stayed at before—the cuisine here may fall slightly short by comparison. The private onsen is truly high-quality with fantastic ambiance! On November 6th, I attended the Tokyo International Vocal Competition in Saitama while staying there overnight; then on November 11th came this lobby concert—making it two consecutive stays related to vocal music events! Although DVDs couldn’t be played on our room TV (so we couldn’t watch opera DVDs we brought), experiencing live performances made up for it wonderfully!

    Quite disappointing.

    Seeking good Onsen quality and delicious cuisine, I often choose accommodations from IKYU.com for my travels. However, this time was very disappointing. Although the website stated 100% free-flowing Onsen water, the large public bath was actually using a circulation and disinfection system. I stayed in the only room with a private bath, but while it wasn’t circulated or disinfected, it was lukewarm. I was instructed to add hot water (not Onsen water) to adjust the temperature, which surprised me. The futon was already laid out with an explanation that it’s for guest privacy; however, it seemed more like a labor-saving measure. For dinner, I chose tonkatsu. The hostess brought "freshly fried tonkatsu" almost immediately after dinner started and began explaining about the dish. By the time I ate it after enjoying appetizers and sashimi, the "freshly fried" tonkatsu had gone completely cold. Additionally, extra bath towels were charged as an additional fee. There was no mention of a free drink corner at check-in; only when I inquired did they inform me about its existence. On multiple occasions during my stay, staff members including the hostess were chatting in hallways blocking passageways—forcing me to crouch down and say “excuse me” just to pass through. Having stayed at many accommodations within this price range before, this experience left much to be desired overall.

    Disappointing as an Onsen Accommodation

    Used this Ryokan seeking Onsen and cuisine. The Room images on IKYU.com looked appealing, but the actual Room felt different—darker in atmosphere. Amenities were minimal, with only a toothbrush provided. Contrary to the description on IKYU, no skincare products like lotion were available. Is this misleading advertising? Additional towels required an extra fee after the first two—a system I encountered for the first time. The Onsen had a private bath sourced from natural spring water, but access was limited to 40 minutes during the stay. The public bath was labeled as such but seemed too small for four adults to use comfortably, with only two washing stations available. Additionally, it was diluted and not 100% natural spring water. As for the cuisine, it lacked quality and featured an overwhelming number of side dishes like preserved foods (tsukudani or salted seafood), making it difficult to finish everything and leaving me very thirsty. Overall, I found this Ryokan lacking any standout features.

    It was very good!!

    The courteous and friendly service was excellent! The meals were very delicious, and the open-air bath in the Room and the private open-air bath were all superb!! I would definitely like to use it again. Thank you very much.

    The tonkatsu is delicious.

    During my first pregnancy, I decided to use this opportunity for a last trip alone with my husband. When I informed them of our situation in advance, they kindly changed the dinner menu from sashimi and salted squid to simmered sea bream and simmered butterbur, for which I am very grateful. In addition to the pork shabu-shabu and crab, the tonkatsu was exceptionally delicious. The fat was not overwhelming, and it had a refined sweetness. Even after returning home, my husband repeatedly commented on how delicious the tonkatsu was. The portion size was about the same as a regular tonkatsu set meal, so when combined with other dishes, it became quite a large meal, but it was so light and easy to eat that we could finish it all. Regarding the room, we reserved a room called "Aoi," and the open-air bath attached to the room allowed us to soak leisurely for about an hour due to its low temperature, providing a luxurious time. The reserved open-air bath was very spacious, and we were able to enjoy it twice, at night and in the morning. It was also wonderful.

    Onsen Stays

    A property that feels like an onsen ryokan, located a 10-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station. I stayed one night in a Western-style room. Although I couldn't see the outside scenery, the owner and the hostess were pleasant and their service was excellent. The cuisine was Japanese, and there were so many dishes for dinner that I couldn't finish them. There are three baths, and the open-air bath is superb. Breakfast is also Japanese. It's very delicious, but the grilled seaweed is not tasty. The hostess is beautiful, and the owner is said to have been a former opera singer, quite handsome. He might have been quite the ladies' man in his younger days...
