Savor Authentic French Cuisine
Hearing that the auberge offered a full-course French dinner, I quickly booked as soon as a room became available. Every dish was beautifully presented and delicious. I’m not an expert in French cuisine, but it felt like authentic local cooking rather than “Japanized” French food. I was especially impressed by the healthy, colorful beet-based appetizers and desserts, the tangy tomato soup, and the bone-in lamb—along with vegetables on the same plate, each carefully seasoned differently. The highlight was the nougat glacé for dessert. It was my first time trying it; it looked beautiful, and I loved its pleasantly firm texture and sweetness. I can see why some guests visit just for this menu. I would love to return.

The Essence of Classic French Cuisine
Our dinner and breakfast at Chalet Grindel were truly wonderful experiences. On the way to the Accommodation, there are several spots with sweeping views of the Southern Alps, Central Alps, Northern Alps, and Yatsugatake. If you go a little farther, you can even see Mt. Fuji. Chalet Grindel is an auberge run by a husband-and-wife team. The building is meticulously maintained throughout and decorated with bright-toned paintings by Renoir, Van Gogh, Sisley, Degas, and others. Outside the windows lies a tennis court in the villa area; beyond it, you can sometimes catch glimpses of deer with their fawns. Nothing in this simple mountain scenery particularly hints that a top-tier French dinner awaits. But as night falls, that astonishing course begins. The first amuse-bouche was a warm risotto: small rice croquettes—crispy on the outside and fluffy within—resting quietly on a plain white plate. At that moment I didn’t yet realize how this almost stark simplicity would contrast with the splendor to come. The second amuse-bouche was a chilled mousse: three beautiful layers topped with caviar and gold leaf. Its visual beauty immediately catches your eye—the layered gradient accented by black and gold naturally draws your gaze. The textures are contrasting as well. Even between just these first two dishes—the risotto and the mousse—the contrast in texture, color palette, and complexity was already vivid. I could write about every course from there onward… but I’ll refrain here and simply say this: each plate told its own story; surprising acidity and sweetness were hidden within; textures were richly varied; visually it balanced simplicity with intricacy—and yet the overall harmony never faltered. It was an exquisite orchestra of flavors. This small Accommodation in Tateshina offers cuisine comparable to Tokyo’s finest French dining. Breakfast the next morning was also perfect: crisp salad textures, onion gratin with béchamel sauce, silky omelet, and beautifully arranged fruit like edible art. Every item was outstanding—one delightful surprise after another. Thank you for such a wonderful meal.

It was a wonderful holiday.
I have always loved small hotels in Yatsugatake and Tateshina, and every summer I visit various accommodations to escape the heat. This time, my weekend suddenly became free, so I made a last-minute reservation for myself. The reviews mentioned that the meals were delicious, and I was very excited. Indeed, every dish was not only visually stunning but also incredibly tasty! Everyone starts their meal at the same time, and each dish is carefully explained with such passion that you can feel the love put into them. A family dining nearby seemed to be repeat guests; they were happily saying how eating here makes them feel truly happy. It warmed my heart because it was absolutely true. Breakfast included a luxurious fruit parfait in the morning, which was full of vitamins and made me very happy. The room was very clean, and the dining area looked like something out of a storybook—so charming! The bath is small but cozy; however, they kindly informed me in advance about nearby onsen options. Since I traveled by public transportation, I didn’t use those facilities but instead visited Katakurakan near Lake Suwa for an onsen before arriving here—it worked out perfectly fine. The accommodation is far from the station so you’ll need a taxi; one way costs about 6,000-7,000 yen. They advised me to book my return taxi early as it can be difficult to secure one—I managed to reserve just in time with the last available car by booking late at night before departure day! So pre-booking your taxi is highly recommended. Since it was a train trip for me this time: on Saturday I strolled around Lake Suwa’s surroundings while Sunday included a stop at Narai-juku before heading home. Even considering taxi costs, there are plenty of tourist spots accessible by train nearby—highly recommended! Even factoring in transportation expenses like taxis...I couldn’t help wondering if it’s okay receiving such amazing meals & services at such reasonable prices? It felt too good honestly! After being exhausted from work lately—I left feeling completely refreshed & healed…thank YOU so much!! Solo travelers will find this place relaxing too—it’s perfect! This visit may have been solo—but next time surely bringing along family or friends sounds wonderful already looking forward again soon someday ahead~ Thankful deeply once more creating unforgettable moments shared together graciously appreciated always!!

An auberge in the forest. The cuisine is a big hit, and the Room is tidy.
The long-awaited auberge is Auberge Chalet Grindel, located in the villa area near Chino City, in the forest of Cherto. The food was a big hit, and the room was neat and tidy. I heard the bath was small, so I went to a day-use onsen before checking in. It was not French home cooking but had the taste and setup of a restaurant. Dinner featured a main course of roasted lamb and poached salmon, with elegant seasoning. However, the dessert portion was too large for men, and it would have been nice if the baked goods were easy to take home (^^). When you take a walk around the property at night, you can see a sky full of stars. It's amazing how visible they are, even though it's not in the mountains. The omelet and parfait in the photo are breakfast. In addition to the exquisite omelet and milk, a parfait was served as dessert. I strolled around the villa, and the trees were well-maintained, making for a refreshing morning. The room I was concerned about was also neat and tidy, and the bed was just the right firmness, which was appreciated by someone like me with back pain. The hotel room's bath is not an onsen. It was like an old one-room apartment, with a combined bathroom and toilet. Since I was informed in advance, I went to "Kawara no Yu," a public onsen 10 minutes by car before checking in, and it was great. It seems to be a favorite among repeat visitors. Since dinner is set to start at 6 o'clock sharp, you need to plan and allow extra time for daytime travel. We got caught in the autumn foliage traffic jam and were late. I apologize for that. The couple and part-time staff manage the meals and service, so considering the food, facilities, and service content, the impression is quite high. Next time, I would like to visit during the fresh green season or for a summer retreat.
