    A Wonderful Experience

    The star-filled night sky was breathtaking, and the night trekking—something you rarely get to experience—was simply amazing. I was able to make irreplaceable memories with my 8-year-old daughter. Thank you so much.

    A sky full of stars

    This is my second stay. I checked the stargazing index and immediately made a reservation. The planetarium, telescope, and stargazing at Hoshimigahara were fantastic. Lying down under the starry sky in the quiet (with some animal sounds) was truly satisfying. The food was delicious, and the thoughtful care for small children who got restless during waiting times was excellent, making it a very satisfying stay. Thank you very much!

    The Facility is outd...

    The Facility is outdated, and stink bugs may enter the Room, which can cause an unpleasant smell if not handled properly. Although it is called an auberge, it does not seem to focus on local ingredients or offer unique dishes exclusive to this location. On the other hand, the hospitality of the star concierge was exceptional. They offer a stargazing tour in Aso's grasslands—normally off-limits to the public—if weather conditions permit, making it a good choice for those interested in stargazing. This Hotel primarily focuses on stargazing experiences and may appeal strongly to specific individuals while being less suitable for others.

    Extraordinary Experience

    An extraordinary experience awaits you here, offering a sense of complete freedom from the constraints of daily life. We stayed in the annex for two nights, and the facility was well-equipped, making it feel just like home. We went stargazing, guided by experts with PhDs in astrophysics. Their thoughtfully designed programs were engaging and enjoyable for all participants. Opportunities to see a sky full of stars are rare, but this experience truly made us realize that Earth is just one among countless stars in the universe. This is a place where you can spend an absolutely wonderful time.

    Enjoy Stargazing

    I made a reservation on this site I found by chance. I was excited about the idea of trekking to see the starry sky, and it turned out to be wonderful. Safety was well ensured, allowing me to participate with peace of mind. The nighttime grazing cows, the sound of deer, and the breathtaking star-filled sky were unforgettable. The moonlight even revealed the mountain ridges, giving me a sense of what ancient times might have felt like. The food was delicious as well. It was my first time staying at a pension, and it became an incredibly memorable trip!

    I was moved by the summer night sky.

    This was my second stay. I chose this accommodation because it is close to Takachiho Gorge, and last year, due to heavy rain, I couldn't see the stars, so I wanted to try again. Fortunately, it was the first good weather of the month, and I could see the Milky Way and the Summer Triangle. Stargazing while lying on an outdoor bed was amazing, and drinks were also provided. The explanation by the star concierge was very interesting and enjoyable. At the observatory, we could view stars individually through a telescope; they even showed us stars that appear as one with the naked eye but are actually two separate ones. The meals were delicious as they were last year, with portions just right for two people (parent and child). This time we stayed in a maisonette room in the main building; personally, I preferred last year's room over this one. Filling up water in the bathtub had to be done using only the showerhead. However, with such fulfilling experiences at both stargazing activities and meals provided by this accommodation—I would love another opportunity someday! Thank you very much!

    Perfect for children's astronomy learning!

    Families with young children will likely enjoy this, but as our group consisted of four adults, it felt slightly out of place. The rating is based on general Ryokan or Hotel standards, so it may seem a bit lower. However, the highlights here are the planetarium, telescope, and an open area to fully enjoy the real starry sky—making this a truly unique Facility. Meals are deliciously prepared using local ingredients, and the bread was especially fluffy and tasty. I wish I had brought my kids here when they were younger! (laughs)

    Drawn to the starry sky and the auberge...

    Visited at the end of February. We chose this accommodation as part of our plan to see the starry sky with friends. The stargazing tour was amazing and we were very satisfied. While weather conditions can’t be controlled, we were lucky to have clear skies on our visit, making it a truly wonderful experience. Despite the cold night, the hot drink service was a delightful touch. As an auberge, however, the meals left something to be desired in terms of quantity rather than taste. Even with four women in our group, we finished everything quickly and felt it wasn’t enough—so much so that I wondered if male guests would feel satisfied. Additionally, the bread served as "focaccia" looked more like round milk bread, which was a bit disappointing. Breakfast also had similar issues with small portions and some items like omelets being served cold despite having set meal times—it left us feeling underwhelmed overall. Without an onsen or other facilities to compensate for its focus as an auberge, I expected more from the dining experience here. Having traveled extensively before, this is one of the few accommodations where I felt portions were insufficient. That said, as a base for stargazing tours, it was excellent!

    It was an accommodation that offered more than just the beauty of the starry sky.

    I stayed alone at the accommodation and thoroughly enjoyed my time from check-in to check-out. The staff's thoughtful hospitality was evident in various moments, making it a wonderful place to stay. Their service was not overly formal but heartfelt and attentive, which moved me deeply multiple times. While the facility is not brand new, it does not feel outdated. It is well-maintained and exudes cleanliness. The classical music playing throughout the accommodation added a soothing touch to the atmosphere. The meals were French courses filled with plenty of vegetables—each dish had a gentle flavor and an elegant presentation that delighted both taste buds and eyes alike. After dinner, I participated in stargazing as the main event of the evening. The staff's explanations were easy to understand, accompanied by touching stories that even brought tears to my eyes—it was truly moving. Blessed with clear weather, I was able to see shooting stars as well. I hope to visit again at another time!

    My recent concerns have been resolved.

    A 9-year-old child independently researched the expansion of the universe and was really troubled as there were no adults around who could answer his questions. Just then, we found out about this observatory and decided to stay here. We were blessed with good weather, and during the "Hoshimigahara" event, my son asked questions and received attentive answers. They explained the Hubble-Lemaître law, which my son was curious about, as well as the difficulties of forming and proving hypotheses and indirect methods of proof, all in an easy-to-understand manner. I am convinced that this stay was a valuable experience that will surely influence my son's life. Although we stayed for my son's sake, I was deeply moved to see the starry sky captured so clearly in the photos I snapped with my iPhone. The dinner was also delicious and very satisfying. It was my first time having Akaushi Chateaubriand, and it was so good it almost made my cheeks fall off. I was satisfied myself, and the view of Saturn we saw at the observatory was beautiful. It was great to gain new insights.

    Special hotel

    We stayed for one night as a family. We chose this hotel for my mother, who loves stars. Unfortunately, the weather was bad, and we couldn't see the starry sky, but we enjoyed listening to a professional astronomer talk about stars in front of a giant telescope and experienced the planetarium. I think there are not many hotels where you can have such an experience. However, the building is old, and it's hard to say that it is well-maintained. It's not inconvenient, but it's not comfortable either. Thank you to the hotel staff for the pleasant service.
