    Hospitality

    This was my first time staying here. Many of the staff are young and from overseas, but their Japanese is excellent, and I was amazed by how exceptionally polite and attentive their service was. Above all, you can really feel how hard they work. I had a very pleasant stay. In particular, the young woman who explained the meals and the man at the front desk during check-in—both were foreign nationals—and they were simply outstanding. The Ryokan itself has a wonderful traditional atmosphere, and I was very satisfied. We stayed to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday, and she was delighted as well! Next time, I’d like to bring my daughter.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    As this is a historic, traditional Accommodation, there were a few aspects of the building that stood out, but the meals, Onsen, and location were excellent, and we were more than satisfied with our Multiple Night Stay. Many of the staff were from overseas, but everyone worked very hard and left a great impression. In particular, the gentleman who assisted us at the front desk spoke fluent Japanese and had a wonderful smile—good! We travel three to four times a year as a hobby, and this became a truly memorable trip. PS. After we left the Accommodation and started driving, you found something we had forgotten and kindly called my mobile phone—thank you so much for your help.

    I really enjoyed my stay.

    In this place connected to the Heike clan, everything was wonderful: the traditional Japanese house Accommodation, the superb Onsen along the mountain stream, and the dining spot reached by crossing the vine bridge. From welcome to farewell, all the staff soothed us with their smiles and attentive service. The open-air bath was so relaxing that we ended up soaking for a long time while enjoying the view. Dinner by the irori hearth was also excellent. We will visit again during the autumn foliage season.

    Highly satisfied

    We stayed as a three-generation family. All the staff were friendly and welcoming with warm smiles, and we made many wonderful memories! Dinner around the irori hearth was delicious and gave us a special, out-of-the-ordinary experience. Next time, we’d love to stay again to see the snowy scenery.

    A Happy Time

    I stayed at this Accommodation for the first time in 30 years. Just off the road stands an old wooden gate like a fortress, and as you walk through the entrance toward this classic Accommodation, a staff member greeted me with, “We’ve been expecting you, Mr./Ms. ○○.” Although I had shared my arrival time in advance, being welcomed by name immediately drew me into an extraordinary world. In the old folk-house style lobby, rattan sofas that support even your head are set facing the icicles across the river. The moment you sit down, you feel gently embraced. With carefully prepared coffee or tea in hand, I spent unhurried time in the warm heating that seems to wrap around the entire building—then was called to the front desk to check in. On the way to my Room, a drum sounded to announce, “We are escorting our guest.” The riverside Japanese-style Room is not overly large yet more than spacious enough, and it carries you from everyday bustle into Yunishikawa’s world. The practical layout feels truly comfortable. At dinner, a separate irori hearth welcomed us. There were grilled dishes on skewers and salt-grilled ayu sweetfish; chicken with sansho miso on a ladle-shaped board was cooked just right—perfect with warm sake. The meal featured many thoughtfully prepared mountain specialties that fully satisfied without being excessive in volume, which I appreciated. Enjoying conversation amid dreamy warm lighting and furnishings at dinner before I knew it two hours had passed. The Onsen is sulfur-based but with a gentle scent that isn’t overpowering. It’s slightly hot and leaves your skin feeling refreshed and smooth—my slightly dry skin felt soothed after just one soak. It was so inviting that over two nights I ended up bathing in the Onsen ten times. For evening meals there are two types of dining spaces in an annex across a suspension bridge over the river. Breakfast is served in the main building with three types of dining areas; private rooms were available for both dinner and breakfast. The attentive care from the attendants made everything taste even better. One small disappointment was that the drink corner closes fairly early—and there wasn’t an izakaya-like place inside where you could relax with drinks late into the evening. Still, making up for it was easy thanks to the Onsen. Step outside this Accommodation and you’ll find streetscapes befitting a hidden village of the Heike clan; sightseeing spots are scattered at just-right distances for walking strolls. Every shop in town offered warm human connection, so there was never a dull moment. It’s an Accommodation I definitely want to return to again.

    Dinner by the irori hearth is exceptional.

    I stayed on January 31 to see the Kamakura Festival. The Accommodation has a wonderful, long-established feel overall, but the walls between Rooms are thin, and noise from the neighboring Room was quite noticeable. Dinner by the irori hearth had a great atmosphere and was delicious. However, to get to the dinner venue, all guests first gather at the front desk before leaving and then walk across the Kazura Bridge, and I didn’t understand why we needed to meet at the front desk (it seemed like we could simply go directly to the venue individually). The Shuttle Service by car to and from the Kamakura Festival venue was very helpful.

    Extraordinary Relaxation

    It was a very memorable accommodation, so I visited again after 20 years. The road from Kawaji has been completely improved, making access much easier. The meal in front of the irori was abundant and incredibly delicious. The room with a semi-open-air bath was very comfortable and satisfying. I hope to visit again someday.

    Spend a heartwarming time in a charming traditional Japanese house.

    A historic Onsen Ryokan with a 400-year legacy nestled in the mountain village of Yunishigawa. The traditional architecture is beautifully preserved, offering a truly special experience throughout the stay. Meals enjoyed around the irori (traditional hearth) are full of charm, creating an atmosphere that feels like stepping into a folktale. The Onsen is serene and soothing, providing relaxation for both body and mind. Overall, it was an incredibly satisfying stay. I would love to visit this accommodation again.

    Enjoy a special and relaxing time at a mountain Onsen.

    I recently stayed at this Ryokan. What impressed me the most was the Onsen, where you can relax while feeling close to nature. The soothing sound of the river and the excellent water quality helped melt away my travel fatigue. The location by the river is perfect, making it an ideal environment for Onsen enthusiasts. To reach the dinner venue, you cross a charming bridge that creates a unique atmosphere, making it feel like stepping into another world. Dinner was served around an irori (traditional Japanese hearth), where freshly grilled char fish and meat were absolutely delicious and satisfying. The dishes highlighted the natural flavors of the ingredients, enhancing my travel experience even more. Experiencing an irori is rare in modern Japan, making it truly special. I had read reviews mentioning "thin walls in rooms" beforehand and was slightly concerned; however, most guests were calm and respectful, so I didn’t find it to be a significant issue personally. Overall, this Ryokan offers a wonderful opportunity to relax in nature while enjoying delicious food and unique experiences. I would love to visit again if given the chance!

    Located an hour's dr...

    Located an hour's drive from Tobu Nikko Station, this was a wonderful hidden gem. The meals were very delicious. Crossing the Kazura Bridge (suspension bridge) to have dinner was a unique experience. The staff were all excellent. However, the thin walls between rooms made voices from the neighboring room clearly audible, which was noisy late into the night and made it difficult to sleep—especially challenging for elderly guests. Improvement is needed in this area.

    Excellent cuisine

    This was my second visit following last November, and once again, I thoroughly enjoyed the amazing cuisine. The broth used seemed different from typical bonito or kelp-based dashi, but it was incredibly delicious and perfectly complemented the mountain ingredients to create exquisite dishes. It's worth traveling just to experience this cuisine. When I was shown to my room, the staff kindly mentioned, "The room you stayed in last time was just above this one," which added a personal touch that made me happy. Of course, the Onsen was fantastic—I enjoyed it three times: right after arrival, after dinner, and again the next morning. I'm already thinking about which season would be best for my next visit!

    Valuable Accommodation

    The furnishings are wonderful, and I felt it is an accommodation that values tradition while connecting it to the modern era. When my elderly mother had difficulty with the stairs in front of Kazurabashi, they kindly provided shuttle service by car, which was greatly appreciated. Dinner was an entertaining experience. I would love to stay here again.

    I stayed for one night and was very satisfied.

    Crossing the suspension bridge and dining around the irori was a first-time experience and incredibly enjoyable. The food was absolutely delicious. Both the Onsen and Room were extremely satisfying! The open-air bath, in particular, was amazing as I could relax while gazing at the river! One minor concern was that the shower hook was positioned a bit high; it might be more convenient if placed slightly lower. Since I stayed for only one night, I’d love to stay longer next time!

    The room is full of ...

    The room is full of steps and dangerous. I almost tripped. The cleaning is not thorough. The bathwater is too hot. This accommodation was full of dissatisfaction like never before. I would never want to stay at this accommodation again.

    A wonderful accommodation.

    Thank you for your hospitality this year as well. Just like last year, we were blessed with great weather, and the cherry blossoms at the accommodation were in full bloom and truly beautiful. The warm smiles of the staff were very comforting. The meals were delicious, healthy, and satisfying in portion size. The venison was especially tasty! Our family enjoyed using the open-air bath in our room multiple times. The onsen was, of course, wonderful as well. We had a relaxing time surrounded by the idyllic atmosphere of Yunishigawa Onsen's paradise-like setting. Thank you very much. We look forward to visiting again!

    A fresh and new experience even for Japanese guests.

    We stayed here for a family trip. The staff were all kind, and we had a very relaxing time. Dinner was served around an irori (traditional Japanese hearth), and while it was sometimes hard to tell if the food was fully cooked, it was a unique experience that we thoroughly enjoyed.

    A wonderful traditional Ryokan

    We drove quite a distance into the mountains from Kinugawa Onsen and discovered a wonderful, traditional Ryokan with a rich history. Dinner was served in a building across the Kazurabashi bridge, where we enjoyed our meal around an irori hearth. The snowy landscape perfectly complemented the valley scenery. The illuminated Kazurabashi bridge and snow formations were truly breathtaking. The bath included one open-air Onsen, but it was quite chilly at the end of March, so warming up properly before heading to the outdoor bath was essential. Both the owner and hostess were very kind, and even though there were several foreign staff members, they were well-trained and provided excellent service without any issues. This Ryokan beautifully preserved its historical charm while being tastefully renovated with modern facilities. It is a historic Ryokan associated with the Heike clan—a truly remarkable place to stay!

    Banyuu in the snow was "otsunamon".

    The staff were all very friendly and welcoming with smiles, and the building had a historical feel to it, which I personally found to be excellent. Of course, the meals and baths were also very good. One disappointing point was that we arrived in the snow, and upon reaching the Ryokan, we were guided to the parking lot. Although they helped with our luggage, my family had to walk a bit to enter. I would have preferred if they prioritized stopping in front of the entrance first to unload luggage and people. The irori (hearth) cuisine was very enjoyable and delicious. The main dish seemed to be special domestic beef (skewered?), which was very thick and of good quality meat; however, by the time it was cooked, we were already full and couldn't enjoy it as much as we'd hoped—this was quite unfortunate. If possible, I would appreciate if it could be served at the beginning of meal time. I've written this review including my hopes but definitely wish to visit again soon.
