    I was satisfied!

    There were no excessive services, but all the essential ones were well provided. In the spacious community zone, there were servers not only for tea and coffee but also for beer, and I was very satisfied that I could enjoy a casual drink. There was also ice cream available in the post-bath area. I also thought it was great that there is a Room where families with children can play. Meals are buffet-style, and everything was delicious. The rock bath is worth seeing at least once—it's wild!

    The Onsen was great.

    The check-in wait was long and took far too much time, so I felt exhausted from the moment I arrived. When I finally got into the Room, for some reason the thick curtains were drawn and it was dark, and the bed sheets were wrinkled, which made me hesitate... but the Onsen was very good.

    The front desk servi...

    The front desk service was the worst; even when I entered the Hotel entrance in the rain, no one greeted me. They only explained dinner times based on the Hotel’s convenience. The dining area was so noisy that it wasn’t relaxing, additional dishes had to be picked up by myself, and even the tempura served right in front of me was far too plain.

    Famous for its open-air bath.

    The reception staff at check-in were pleasant and efficient. The Room key has a large tag with the room number, so it’s unlikely to be lost, but it’s inconvenient to carry around. I would prefer a card key. To reach the outdoor bath, you have to go down a long staircase. It has a nice atmosphere, but I don’t think it would be suitable for elderly guests. Depending on the time of day, it can also feel a bit scary if no one else is there. With warnings to watch out for bears, it feels even more risky—almost like a small adventure. The outdoor bath changing area has only one sink and just two hair dryers, which felt insufficient. Amenities are minimal both in the Room and in the changing area. It seems they are focused on operational efficiency. The meals offered a wide variety, and everything I tried was delicious. Beef tongue, steak, and tempura were prepared by chefs behind the counter, but they were kept warm after being made in advance—so you can enjoy the upscale presentation at least. It was buffet-style: guests receive only chopsticks, with no knives, forks, or spoons provided; however, all dishes were bite-sized so it wasn’t inconvenient. Each table also had its own tabletop stove, which was nice. There was also a wide selection of desserts to enjoy. Meal times are divided into groups so that guests don’t linger in the dining hall and overlap with the next group; as part of this effort to prevent crowding, coffee and alcohol are provided free of charge in the lounge instead. I think this is a great idea. I would have liked to see hot drinks such as green tea (sencha), roasted green tea (hojicha), or rooibos tea available in the lounge as well. I was disappointed that we had to clear our own dishes after eating. Considering we paid a reasonable accommodation fee, I was surprised it was like a restaurant chain system. The building is very well maintained and clean throughout; we were able to relax comfortably in our clean Room . Soundproofing was good too—I wasn’t bothered by outside noise at all—and having an air purifier made it even more comfortable。 In particular，the Onsen water quality was excellent，and I’d like to visit again。 Thank you for your hospitality。

    I couldn’t find any good points.

    After Iwamatsu Ryokan became Ooedo Onsen, I decided to stay there. It was a Room with an open-air bath, but the only amenity provided was a toothbrush. There was no mineral water, not even a pot of cold water—only green tea bags. The hair dryer was an old wall-mounted type I haven’t seen in years. The rock bath smelled strongly of chlorine, and it was disappointing that the “Koka” bath, which used to be free-flowing from the source, is no longer available. When I told the front desk that the conditioner in my Room was foaming up, they acted as if it were my mistake and didn’t apologize, saying they would bring something to the Room later. I had to wait with wet hair in a cold place—it was awful.

    Unfortunately.

    I decided to stay again after a long time because I had a good impression when it was Iwamatsu Ryokan. About four days before my stay—when the Cancellation Fee would apply—I requested Shuttle Service from the station, but was told they only accept pickups at times designated by the Accommodation. As I was traveling from far away with poor connections and bringing my elderly parent, I asked if any arrangement could be made, but was told it wasn’t possible. Accepting that the Accommodation may have its own constraints, I then called the taxis in Sakunami and Ayashi that the Accommodation suggested, but they also said they could not provide pickup from the station. The local bus connections were also poor and not feasible. If this is such an inconvenient location, I would like them to offer more Shuttle Service options. It felt like there was a lack of hospitality. If there had been no Cancellation Fee, I would not have gone. I stayed in a Junior Suite, and was also surprised that there were no amenities such as lotion or toner provided at the semi-open-air bath. At this price range, I did not want to see cost-cutting in that area. The meals were acceptable at best, but the semi-open-air bath in the Room and the rock bath were very good. The staff were pleasant, but since becoming Oedo Onsen Monogatari it seems to place too much emphasis on cost and efficiency, and it’s disappointing that Iwamatsu’s spirit of hospitality has been lost.

    Disappointing.

    Long wait at check-in, unable to use the rock bath due to bear disturbances. Room not ready even at check-in time as cleaning was incomplete. No New Year’s decorations or events despite staying on New Year’s Day. Public bath and hallways were cold. Buffet quality did not match the advertised "premium" standard. The price is not cheap, yet most services are self-service, making it feel overpriced. Disappointing experience overall.

    The price is reasonable for a Room without a view bath.

    To celebrate the opening of Oedo Onsen Monogatari, I booked a 96㎡ Junior Suite with an open-air bath (semi-open-air) for a date six months after the opening at a discounted rate. Later, I noticed that the price had significantly increased. Staying for over 40% less than the current price (even after using points) felt like a great deal. The free shuttle service to Sakunami Station was convenient, but I was surprised by how crowded it was—so much so that some guests had to use auxiliary seats. Some people might have been asked to wait for the next bus due to full capacity. The room was spacious, and the large bathtub with natural hot spring water in the bathroom with a washing area offered stunning views through its glass walls. It would have been even more breathtaking during peak autumn foliage—perhaps we were about one or two weeks early? However, despite such an impressive bathroom setup, I found it surprising that they provided such a low-quality hairdryer—it seemed outdated and cheap. Upgrading this would be appreciated. Additionally, while there was also an indoor bath in the room, it felt unnecessary given how excellent the open-air bath with washing area already was. As others have mentioned, highlights included: - The spacious lobby with complimentary drink services - The charming rock onsen along a stream at the bottom of long stairs (88 steps?) However, note that on our visit day this rock onsen was women-only; men could only use it in the morning. Dinner followed a buffet style with two seating times: 5 PM and 7:30 PM. While local dishes were featured prominently on their menu, apart from steamed dishes served in bamboo steamers ("seiro-mushi"), most offerings were underwhelming compared to high-end accommodations' standards. Breakfast started at 7 AM for early diners; while items like sea bream dashi rice bowls and "hatto-jiru" soup stood out positively among otherwise average options—they might explain why this experience doesn't quite reach four stars overall. That said—for non-suite rooms without open-air baths—the pricing is relatively affordable (around ¥20k–¥30k per night for two people). Adding extra dishes during dinner could enhance satisfaction levels here too! Currently though—the pricing structure makes rooms featuring private open-air baths nearly double those without them despite identical sizes—which feels excessive now post-opening discounts are gone! Introducing smaller-sized yet more affordable options featuring private baths may attract broader demographics better long-term!

    I made a reservation with high expectations for the onsen.

    Unfortunately, it was disappointing. The open-air bath, despite using natural hot spring water, seemed to have issues with temperature control and hygiene, likely leading to added water. The smell was unpleasant and ruined the experience. The meals were tastier than expected. While the facility is large and impressive, it was overly crowded in every aspect.

    Open-air Bath

    "Iwamatsu" at Sakunami Onsen has been my go-to accommodation several times. Speaking of "Iwamatsu," it’s synonymous with the open-air riverside onsen reached by descending a long staircase. I looked forward to enjoying this bath and made the trip for that purpose, assuming that even if management changed, the iconic rock bath would remain unchanged. However, upon arrival, I was informed that the open-air onsen was reserved exclusively for women until midnight (24:00), and men could only use it starting from the next morning. Since bathing in this onsen was my main reason for visiting, I found this arrangement very disappointing. If only there had been a note about this policy on the accommodation's website, I wouldn’t have completed the reservation in the first place.

    Glad to have visited Iwamatsu Ryokan.

    We were satisfied staying at the memorable accommodation. It seems the children ate too much for both dinner and breakfast. The oyster rice was delicious.

    The lobby was amazing.

    The lobby was even more impressive than Sakunami Ichinobo. However, in terms of overall experience including meals, I think Taoya Akiu was better. My apologies, Ooedo Onsen.

    Solo female traveler...

    Solo female traveler, late 50s, and a big fan of Onsen. Thank you for the wonderful stay recently. The satisfaction level was incredibly high for the price. Upon entering the Ryokan, there was a spacious lounge area, and when I arrived at my Room, it felt like new construction—everything from the toilet to the bed and sofa was brand new and impeccably clean. I especially loved that you could enjoy ice-cold Asahi Super Dry draft beer in the lounge until midnight. The meals were also fantastic; dinner included Sendai's specialty beef tongue, steak, sashimi, and more. Breakfast featured options like "nokke-don," which were plentiful and delicious. It was great to enjoy free activities like table tennis and karaoke as well! The bath had slightly hotter water than expected but offered an outdoor Onsen with a nostalgic charm reminiscent of the old Iwamatsu Ryokan—truly atmospheric with excellent water quality. Once again, I must say it exceeded expectations for its price point!

    There were various Onsen, and I enjoyed them.

    The open-air baths along the Sakunami River seemed ordinary at first glance, but upon entering, I discovered that each of the four rock baths has a different source, resulting in subtly different mineral compositions. The water temperature also varied from lukewarm to hot, allowing me to leisurely enjoy my preferred rock bath. The main building's indoor bath was spacious, and the women-only Koge no Yu, made of wood, offered views of greenery through two windows, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of being in a forest. Dinner was a buffet, featuring local specialties from Tohoku such as Miyagi and Yamagata's imoni and beef tongue, making for an enjoyable meal.

    Completely in a negative spiral of business conditions

    Visiting for the first time in over 40 years to enjoy the rock bath by the mountain stream, but the staff's service attitude, the level of cleanliness of the facilities, and the poor environment within the property were all negative. It is evident even to an amateur that the situation has fallen into a completely negative spiral in terms of customer turnout and business conditions. The management remains stuck in the good old days of a Showa-era tourist onsen ryokan, making it difficult to say that it is ahead of the tourism trends of the Reiwa era. Although this has become quite a harsh critique, I hope they can somehow turn the business around. I wish they would return to the era when Shiki composed haiku about this property. Hang in there, Iwamatsu, hang in there, Sakunami.

    Revisited after 20 years

    Speaking of Sendai, Sakunami Onsen comes to mind. When it comes to Sakunami Onsen, I had an image of Iwamatsu Ryokan. As I descended the stairs to the rock bath along the mountain stream, memories came flooding back. Unfortunately, this time we couldn't enter the lowest of the five rock baths due to rising water levels. The facility gave a sense of the luxury it had when it was first built, while also conveying a sense of history. The dining style has mainly shifted to a buffet style, reflecting the times. However, the food was delicious, allowing us to taste the local produce of the Tohoku region. I would like to visit again in another ten years.
