The open-air bath “Mori no Yu,” located a short distance away, was very relaxing. Since it is reserved for private use in 30-minute slots, a Reservation is required, and they provide Shuttle Service to the bath by car. Please note that there are no showers, body soap, or shampoo at the open-air bath. It’s a place to simply unwind and enjoy the soak.

Please say that again more slowly.

It started with the open-air bath in a separate annex, and the Onsen was wonderful. I left the Accommodation in a hurry because it looked like my return train might stop running due to the weather. Next time, I’d like to stay for two nights and relax—enjoying the Onsen and spending plenty of time reading.

Hospitality and hot spring waters worthy of a renowned secluded hot spring Accommodation

This was my second one-night stay, this time with an overseas friend, right at the peak of Naruko’s autumn foliage. The Onsen is free-flowing and slightly hot, yet pleasantly therapeutic, and the steamed bath—like a stone sauna—is perfect for cooling down after bathing. There are several reservable private family baths; on the 4th floor, the shaded and sunny baths offered beautiful views of the autumn leaves outside. Calligraphy pieces written by the proprietress are displayed throughout the building, giving it the feel of a small calligraphy exhibition. The matcha served at both check-in and check-out was especially appreciated by our guest from the USA. Every dish featured local ingredients with gentle seasoning and great flavor—and the rice was so good I ended up eating too much. Unfortunately, due to bear precautions we couldn’t use the open-air bath; however, the quiet detached open-air bath we were shown, as well as the annex and tea room, were splendid—I imagine they take a great deal of effort to maintain. The Nikkei newspaper was available early in the morning. Aside from a slight noise at night from drawing hot water, it was an excellent therapeutic Accommodation.

2 Nights, 3 Days Asile Plan

I stayed on the Multiple Night Stay therapeutic retreat Plan. There are three private baths, so even during busy times before dinner or breakfast, it felt like at least one was usually available. On the second day, I didn’t go out; I brought yoga wear and did a cycle of the steam bath to a private bath three times with breaks in between, and the day flew by. With the Plan perk onigiri and a local specialty chestnut-filled dango I bought nearby, lunch was more than enough. The meals were varied as well, so I didn’t get tired of them even over multiple nights. When I’m alone, I usually eat something simple, but here I really enjoyed the carefully prepared food. As someone who drinks alcohol, I especially appreciated the clam miso soup and ended up getting seconds. As for the Room, a musty smell bothered me from the moment I entered. Even with the air conditioner on overnight and towels hung up to dry, they didn’t dry at all, so I think the humidity was too high. For that reason alone, I would rate only the Facility/amenities as 3 stars. All staff were courteous and attentive, and overall it was a very satisfying stay. Next time, I’d like to try one of the newer Rooms.

    It exceeded my expectations.

Thank you very much for the other day. The Accommodation is quite an old building, but it had a wonderful atmosphere. The Room felt clean, and the facilities had been well updated, making it very comfortable to stay in. What left the biggest impression was the private open-air Onsen in a separate annex, said to have been built by the previous owner. It’s a must-see if you visit Onuma—please do check it out. Best of all was the food. Everything was delicious and very filling, and I was surprised to be able to enjoy salt-grilled sweetfish (ayu). Breakfast was also excellent—especially the large-bean natto. The moment I tasted it, I knew it was outstanding. I heard it is their homemade large-bean natto. With both the Onsen and meals being so satisfying, this has become one of those Accommodations I’d love to return to. Thank you as well to all the Ryokan staff for your wonderful hospitality.

    The bath is excellent.

I was disappointed that the open-air bath required an additional fee, but I was satisfied with the indoor bath, which had excellent water quality. It is a good Accommodation, but the value for money felt lacking.

An Accommodation you’ll want to stay at again

What made me happiest was the wide variety of Onsen baths, all with wonderfully silky water quality! They’re available almost 24 hours a day, so I really enjoyed them. I especially loved Mori no Yu and Hina no Yu on the 4th floor. I’m sensitive to dirty toilets, but although the building is old, the toilets have been renovated and were clean, which made me very happy! The meals were more than I could finish as a woman. Everything was delicious. On top of that, an elderly staff member kindly walked us to the exit when we left, which truly warmed my heart! It’s hard for me to visit often since I’m from the Chugoku region, but this is an Accommodation I definitely want to return to.
