Enjoy the Onsen in a spacious open-air bath

As the name “Accommodation with a Large Open-Air Bath” suggests, it’s wonderful that there are multiple spacious, open-air baths with a great sense of openness. There are also plenty of washing stations, so I could enjoy the hot water freely without worrying about other guests. I was also surprised that each of the four free private baths is as large as, or even larger than, a typical open-air bath. The morning bath starts at 6:00, but Onsen lovers would be even happier if it opened a little earlier. The Room shows its age to some extent, but it was well cleaned and comfortable. The meals were just the right amount—not too much or too little—and the breakfast rice porridge was especially good. When I mentioned that the lighting during dinner was glaring because it shone directly on me, they responded immediately; they also kindly explained details about the return bus service—overall, the staff’s hospitality was excellent. Although access by public transportation is somewhat limited, this is an Accommodation I would definitely like to stay at again if I have another chance to visit Kumano.

    It was excellent.

The largest open-air bath in western Japan was amazing. This accommodation allows you to relax and enjoy the onsen surrounded by abundant nature.

    The open-air bath was excellent.

The open-air bath was excellent. Although I mistakenly made a reservation for a dinner-only plan, they kindly prepared breakfast for me the next day upon request.

    An Exquisite Open-Air Hot Spring

This was my first time experiencing such a spacious and open-air onsen! The women's bath (I don't have information about the men's bath) has five outdoor baths. It was mentioned that one of the outdoor baths can accommodate 500 people, but during my visits in the early morning and evening, there were only about five people at most. Day-use onsen is also available, so many locals seem to use it as if it were their home bath. It was an incredibly relaxing experience. There are also family open-air baths available without a reservation, and they are free of charge. Although labeled as family baths, they are large enough to fit around 10 people. The baths here are highly recommended! While the facilities may be old, they maintain a sense of cleanliness. The lobby exudes a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere, but the staff at the front desk provide polite service. The driver who provided transportation to and from Hongu had an amazing smile!

Ideal for visiting Kumano Taisha without a car.

The shuttle service is excellent. In addition to the shuttle between Shirahama and the property, they also took us to Fushimi Oji on the Kumano Kodo. We chose a standard Japanese-style room. ■ Room Of course, there was some age, but it was clean. Since our main focus was visiting the Kumano Kodo, we had no complaints, but it wasn't particularly impressive either. ■ Service For visitors without a car, the convenience is unparalleled. This was our main purpose, and it met our expectations. The front desk service was also good. ■ Onsen The family private open-air bath is entirely outdoors, including the washing area, so it's cold. The large open-air bath was partially under construction in the men's section, but there was an indoor bath, which was more comfortable. There is no sauna. ■ Facility There is nothing noteworthy. There is no lounge or anything like that. ■ Meal It was in a kaiseki style, and it was delicious. The portions are very large, so even men will find it sufficient. Just when we thought it was Japanese kaiseki, there was a sudden herb-grilled sea bream and scallops with balsamic sauce. It was surprising but a masterpiece. ■ Satisfaction We were satisfied with the service that met our expectations for the Kumano Kodo hike and the delicious meals. Thank you very much.

The bath is outside the building.

There was no bath in the Room or within the Property. You have to leave the Facility to take a bath. After exiting the building, there are four small private open-air baths that only guests can use in the building right next door. However, they were always occupied. The large open-air bath further ahead is an Onsen Facility used by the general public as well. There is no time restriction to differentiate for guests, and the changing room feels like a public bathhouse. There is also a bit of distance to the building, so it is cold in winter.

    Arrival during a typhoon

It was disappointing that even though we checked in during the heavy rain of the typhoon, no towels or other amenities were provided. The meal portions were large and delicious.

    Very good Stays.

I was able to relax. Thank you very much. My accompanying family was also pleased. The environment is good, surrounded by greenery and a river. Although the building itself is old, it is well-cleaned and maintained, making it very clean. You can reserve a private bath that is spacious enough not to feel like a family bath. The large open-air bath is also spacious, so you hardly notice other users even when sharing. The meals are plentiful, and everything was delicious. Recently, I have been a Hotel person, but this experience has positively changed my perspective.

Large open-air bath and shuttle bus

We fully enjoyed the private bath, large public bath, and the large open-air bath. The large open-air bath, especially in the early morning, was very pleasant. The meals were thoughtfully prepared with a generous amount. The shuttle service from Shirahama Station and the round trip to Kumano Hongu Taisha was very helpful. The facilities have a somewhat Showa retro feel, so there were some minor inconveniences, but overall it was a highly satisfying stay.
