    Asaya isn’t the only long-established ryokan in Kinugawa.

    A typhoon meant we couldn’t go anywhere, but the weather around Kinugawa didn’t look too bad, so we made a last-minute same-day Reservation and stayed here. We usually stay at Asaya in Kinugawa, so this was our first visit. Staff were waiting at the driveway to greet us, and the welcome was very pleasant. Inside, it’s an older but lavish large-scale Showa-era Hotel. The courtyard garden was beautifully maintained and spotless. The Room was neither great nor bad—just standard—but it was spacious, which was nice. As for the Onsen, they switch between men and women, so the atmosphere differs. Both are spacious as you’d expect from a large Hotel. The first-floor baths were excellent: a scenic open-air bath and a strong sauna. The cold bath was lukewarm, but large and enjoyable. The basement level has no view and is surrounded by walls, so it can feel a bit enclosed. Still, there are thoughtful features like a deep open-air bath and another with a waterfall. Personally, I found the first-floor baths far better. And then the meals: the kaiseki served in a private sunken kotatsu room was carefully prepared with authentic flavors and proper dashi. There were many dishes and we were very satisfied. I expected breakfast would be good as well—and it truly was. Overall The staff were consistently friendly, making our stay very comfortable. The property is spacious; it has that nostalgic charm of a classic large Hotel. The garden is beautiful, and the lobby is relaxing. The baths on the first floor are especially good. Above all else, the food stood out. To be honest I wasn’t expecting much—we came mainly to soak in the Onsen during heavy rain—but everything tasted great and really lifted my mood. I hope you keep up this quality and generous portions. Just an aside We happened to overlap with a young group who took over part of the public bath area—about ten people moving in line from sauna → cold bath → Onsen—which felt quite stressful (laugh). It seems Kinugawa still has many wonderful Ryokan and Hotels like this one. I truly hope it regains its former liveliness like Atami once had. We will definitely return again soon—thank you very much.

    Back in Kinugawa after a long time

    Thank you for your help. I had informed the Hotel that I would arrive around 6:00 PM, but I was able to get there earlier and relax. Thank you very much.

    Kinugawa Trip

    The luxurious entrance and beautiful gardens were wonderful. It was great that there were kid-friendly events and mini concerts. I’d like to stay here again when I travel to Nikko.

    We were impressed by the food, the bath, the Room, and the attentive service from the staff.

    My daughter and I stayed here together. We had a luggage issue before arriving at the Hotel and ended up arriving an hour late for dinner, but you kindly accommodated us, for which we are truly grateful. For the meal, although it was already past the time when it would normally have been served as a boxed meal, you were considerate enough to serve us as planned, and I was nearly moved to tears. Every dish was not only beautifully presented but also thoughtfully prepared with seasonal ingredients and flavors that guests of any age can enjoy. The seasoning and portions were just right, and everything was truly delicious. We chose the plan with breakfast included, and it was very lavish—yet never heavy—and before we knew it, we had finished everything. The rice was especially delicious; my daughter and I even said afterward that we should have asked for seconds. The Onsen bath was very clean, and it felt so wonderful that we forgot all about the day’s troubles. We also used the open-air bath; since it was a full moon that night, we enjoyed a blissful time soaking while looking at the moon peeking through the trees. The Room was very spacious, with a Japanese-style room plus a separate bedroom with beds. It’s a layout where you can relax in comfort in the Japanese-style room and then sleep soundly in bed afterward—something guests of any age can enjoy. Above all else, every member of staff provided outstanding service. When we arrived at Kinugawa Onsen Station there were hardly any taxis available, and we were worried about whether we could reach the Hotel on foot along dark roads. You picked us up by car from the station, which helped us tremendously. You also drove us to the station again the next day—thank you so much. Thanks to you, we made our scheduled train on time. Your kindness in every respect truly moved us. There are many Ryokan out there and we have stayed at several before, but this is a Hotel where we were satisfied with everything: staff service, cuisine, baths, and Rooms. This time it was only one night because there were other places we wanted to visit as well; however, if we travel to the Nikko area again next time, we will definitely choose this Hotel. And since we had your wonderful food rather hurriedly this time due to our late arrival (laugh), next time I’d like to arrive on schedule and savor each dish more slowly. We sincerely appreciate all your kindness. Thank you very much. We look forward to staying with you again in the future.

    The Hotel looked imp...

    The Hotel looked impressive and spotless, both outside and in the lobby. While waiting to be shown to our Room, we enjoyed a cold mugicha while looking out at the garden. The Room was spacious and relaxing, with two connected rooms and a wonderful view. Both dinner and breakfast were carefully prepared dish by dish; the hot pot, rice cooked in a traditional pot, and local yuba were all delicious, with more than enough to eat. It was excellent value for the price. The Onsen alternated between men’s and women’s baths in the morning and evening, and both were wonderful—I ended up going three times. After my morning bath, I had shijimi clam soup. It was delicious. Both the food and the Onsen were great. I was able to truly unwind. Even more than that, I was deeply impressed by the Ryokan staff’s hospitality—providing Shuttle Service to the station, serving our meals, explaining everything at the front desk, and offering shijimi clam soup.

    A Birthday Trip for Your Partner (Early 20s)

    We stayed for one night and two days for my boyfriend’s birthday trip. From the moment you arrive, several staff members are stationed at the entrance, so you don’t even need to go to the front desk—they promptly take care of your luggage and guide you smoothly through check-in. Even after check-in, everything—from escorting us to our Room and explaining the Facility to serving meals—was handled with great care, and we truly felt their hospitality. The Onsen, front desk area, and our Room were all spotless, making it easy to relax and enjoy a very comfortable stay. The food was delicious, but the portions are quite large, so I recommend arriving with a big appetite to enjoy it even more.

    My First Visit to Kinugawa

    We were very satisfied with the breakfast and dinner, with so many dishes we couldn’t finish them all. The simmered bamboo shoots (Tosa-style), fresh yuba, Tochigi beef miso hot pot, and freshly fried tempura were all delicious and truly impressive. Since we usually sleep on futons, we asked for two sets to be laid out. We slept very soundly and were extremely satisfied. Before departure, we ordered the strawberry parfait served at the back of the first-floor lobby. With homemade strawberry jam, ice cream, sweetened condensed milk and cereal at the bottom, it was adorable—and the most impressive parfait I’ve ever had. I think if you served half that portion at dinner, it would definitely become a hit. We ended up buying some of the homemade jam to take home as well. Next time, I’d like to stay in one of the newly opened Room. Thank you very much.

    Relax and unwind in the Onsen during the calm, quiet season in mid-January.

    Because we were busy over the year-end and New Year holidays, we wanted to relax and recover, so we made a last-minute Reservation at this Accommodation. From the phone support about our arrival time and access, to being greeted on arrival, and through check-in, everything was smooth and pleasant. When we entered the Room, it was so spacious it felt almost too much for just two people. From the window we could see the mountains and the town of Kinugawa, and for the first time in a while we were able to enjoy dusk. It seemed there were other guests in the Rooms next to ours, but it was quiet and calm, and we could truly unwind. The meals were delicious both dinner and breakfast. There was plenty of food, but we finished everything. The Tochigi rice was especially good. During dinner there was a small incident because we couldn’t clearly understand an explanation from an international staff member, but a veteran staff member stepped in with thoughtful support and handled it well. Their attentiveness felt wonderful. We also really enjoyed the Onsen—going back and forth many times between the warmer indoor bath and the hotter open-air bath. We appreciated having a late checkout as well. One note: although the large tatami Room stays warm with two heaters, the washroom’s flooring is cold in winter—so a mat or slippers are essential (it might feel nice in summer). Also, in one of the breakfast dining rooms early in the morning, the heating hadn’t fully kicked in yet, so I recommend dressing warmly before going down. Winter mornings and evenings in Kinugawa are cold.

    It was a wonderful anniversary date, even on a rainy day.

    I made the reservation as a gift for his birthday trip! Overall, the staff's hospitality and service were excellent, providing a wonderful experience. The facility in the bathroom showed some signs of aging and might need renovation or replacement, but the room was comfortable and it didn’t bother us much. The highlight was enjoying delicious meals while admiring the beautiful Japanese garden! Both dinner and breakfast were luxurious and tasted amazing. I would love to stay here again if I have another chance!

    A wonderful Hotel for an exceptional experience

    We had a wonderful experience with excellent service, the lounge, and meals. Personally, I was delighted that the lounge offered unlimited drinks. Visiting Tochigi turned out to be a great decision. My wife and I enjoyed a relaxing time together! We look forward to staying here again!

    We stayed at the Hotel for one night during our 2-night, 3-day trip. The atmosphere of the Hotel and the staff's hospitality were excellent. Both dinner and breakfast featured seasonal and local flavors with generous portions, which we found very satisfying. However, our main purpose for staying in Kinugawa was to relax in the Onsen. While the Hotel's baths were spacious and offered a variety of options, we felt that the overall water temperature was on the lower side. Since it was a cold day, it took quite some time to warm up our bodies. Adjusting the water temperature with more variation depending on each type of bath would be even better. On our way back, we used the Shuttle Service provided by the Hotel. The driver kindly shared information about local attractions and tips for our next destination, which was very helpful.     A classic and luxurious Onsen Ryokan

    Facility: The hotel exudes the charm of a luxurious Showa-era hotel. While the building shows its age, it is well-maintained and clean. However, the carpets in the lounge and shop are noticeably stained and could use replacement soon. Amenities: The room was very clean, but the minibar and tea selection were quite standard for a ryokan of this class. A more unique touch would be appreciated. Service: Like many places, they seem to struggle with staffing. Despite not being crowded, check-in took 30 minutes, and unfortunately, the room's air conditioning was off despite a temperature of 15°C—this was disappointing. Onsen: There were plenty of private baths available, and both large public baths were spacious with alternating schedules allowing guests to enjoy both during a one-night stay. However, all baths use a circulation system with no free-flowing onsen water; there was also a noticeable chlorine smell which detracted from the quality of the water itself. Complimentary mineral water and barley tea were provided, along with ReFa hair dryers in the dressing area. Meals: Both breakfast and dinner were served in private dining rooms within the restaurant area; quality and quantity were excellent overall. Drink prices were reasonable as well. With children present, meals were served promptly which was very helpful for families.

    A wonderful accommodation that offers heartfelt hospitality

    Despite the rainy weather, I enjoyed a relaxing time in the bath instead of sightseeing. Many of the staff had a high level of professionalism, and I felt the warm hospitality of the Hotel. The indoor bath was spacious, and I could enjoy both sides as they alternated. The new private open-air bath featured an Oya stone sauna and a cypress bath, providing a pleasant experience with luxurious spaces like tatami flooring in the dressing room and raised seating area. It was also great that there were about 10 dressers in the dressing room. Additionally, all hair dryers (including those in the Room) were ReFa brand, making it very comfortable. The meals were delicious, and having them served in a private dining room was appreciated. I stayed in the new building and was happy to have access to the premium lounge. (The reason for lowering my score is that some baths in the main building felt slightly outdated. Also, it was disappointing to be assisted by foreign staff who were not fluent in Japanese during meal times and at private baths.) I would love to stay again if given another opportunity. Thank you very much!

    It was a wonderful Hotel!

    After visiting Nikko Edo Wonderland with my child, we stayed here for one night. Although it seems to be a historic hotel, the spacious facility has been renovated and is very clean. The room was large enough for three people. The front desk offers various games for rent, so we could play in the room, which made my child very happy. All the meals were delicious. Since my child tends to eat inconsistently, we didn’t include meals in our plan, but they kindly provided rice and furikake as a service. The onsen was spacious and allowed us to relax! The water quality suited me well and felt great. After enjoying the onsen, we could admire the beautifully lit garden while enjoying free drinks. I was also pleased that they had apple juice available for children. This is a wonderful accommodation that can be enjoyed by both elderly guests and families with children alike. I would love to stay here again when I visit Nikko!

    I had a pleasant stay.

    The facilities, including the building and baths, were well-maintained, clean, and comfortable to use. Both dinner and breakfast were thoughtfully prepared by the chef and tasted excellent. It was a pleasant and comfortable stay after a long time. If I had to mention one point, the toilet in the room felt slightly small.

    It was excellent.

    I urgently requested a cake as it coincided with my son's birthday. The phone correspondence was very polite. They kindly provided information about nearby sightseeing spots and the congestion in Nikko, which made me look forward to visiting the accommodation. On the day, I appreciated their thoughtful gestures. We were able to see fireworks, making it a memorable summer vacation. The meals were delicious, but it was unfortunate that one of the glasses for comparing sake was chipped.

    The meals and baths ...

    The meals and baths were excellent. The building is not new, but the interior of the Room has been renovated and was very clean and well-maintained. The meals were not buffet-style for a change, but instead refined Japanese cuisine, which was delicious. During my stay, I bathed three times and enjoyed several types of baths as they switch between male and female use. It would be appreciated if the dry sauna could always be available for use if possible.

    Our family was completely satisfied.

    We stayed as a family of five during the peak Obon holiday season. Although the signboard with the ryokan's name looked old and made us a bit uneasy at first, the staff from the parking guide to reception provided excellent service. The interior, while showing some age, was well-maintained and clean, allowing us to enjoy a very pleasant stay. We had fun training in the gym with our kids and playing basketball outdoors. The room and facilities were spacious and clean everywhere we went. The onsen was equipped with ReFa hair dryers, which delighted my daughter. Despite being peak pricing, we felt satisfied given such exceptional service. It was impressive how this traditional onsen accommodation has been kept so beautifully maintained over time. This is an accommodation I would recommend to friends!

    We stayed with our baby, and the Room was clean and comfortable without any issues. The bath switching time coincided with the time we wanted to use it, so it would have been nice if it were a bit later. I saw comments about the meals being small, but we found them more than sufficient. Even my husband, who eats an average amount, seemed satisfied. The staff provided polite and kind service. We would love to visit again!

    The building itself seems old, but the interior is clean, and the Japanese-Western style Room with a bed was comfortable. The bath was average. I believe the hairdryer was from ReFa. It would be nice to have hand soap placed at the sink in the dressing area. As for meals, there were many small dishes that were visually enjoyable. The rice was cooked with solid fuel and amounted to slightly less than one bowl per person. I had a Plan with steak included, along with beer and highballs, but even as a woman, I found the meal portions to be small. If I visit again, I would like to request additional servings for dinner. The service was very pleasant, and if I have another opportunity to stay here in the future, I look forward to visiting again!

    Cost-effective accommodation

    Room & Amenities: The rooms were renovated and very clean. The tatami mats were new, and the room was more than spacious enough. However, some areas not included in the renovation, such as the cabinet door housing the refrigerator and the bathroom door, had issues with alignment. Hospitality & Service: The staff provided very kind hospitality. They were especially warm towards our young daughter, which made her very happy. Onsen & Bath: With a gender-swapping system in place, we enjoyed a variety of baths without any crowding and could relax comfortably. While there were minor cleaning oversights in some areas, overall it was satisfactory. However, there was only one pair of slippers available at the restroom near the large public bath. This caused inconvenience when my wife took our daughter to use it; an additional pair would be appreciated. Facility: Although the exterior is old, spaces like the free lounge and lobby are newly renovated and comfortable to spend time in. Dining: We appreciated being seated in a private room likely due to having our young daughter with us. The food portions were generous with no particular issues noted. Overall Satisfaction: Overall, this accommodation offers high satisfaction for its price point. Additionally, we thoroughly enjoyed the homemade strawberry and blueberry syrups that came with shaved ice included in our plan—they were delicious!

    The Onsen is relaxing. The staff are courteous.

    The Onsen is very relaxing. The staff are incredibly kind, polite, and leave a great impression. It's very comfortable here. The meals are delicious; however, one thing that stood out was the rice served during dinner. It is cooked on the table using solid fuel in a pot, but when trying to scoop out the rice stuck around the edges of the pot into a bowl, it ends up being hard and dry. This affects the overall taste of the rice in the bowl. While it might work well for seasoned or mixed rice dishes, plain white rice might taste better if cooked in a regular rice cooker instead. Just my personal opinion!

    Overall, I am satisf...

    Overall, I am satisfied with the Onsen and meals. However, it was a bit disappointing that there were no napkins in the dining area, only wet tissues provided, which lacked a sense of luxury in the finer details. That said, the meals themselves were very delicious and highly satisfying in both quantity and quality.

    I had a very relaxing stay. The early check-in and late check-out service were greatly appreciated as this accommodation was intended for relaxation rather than sightseeing. The bath was slightly lukewarm, but I could soak in it comfortably, which helped me sleep well. The meals were absolutely delicious, especially the meat. The coffee after the meal was also excellent!
