Very satisfied!
I looked for a good Accommodation in Gunma, my father’s hometown, to travel with my elderly parents. My husband and I have stayed here about twice before, and I really wanted to come again, so I made a Reservation. The Room, the meals, and the service from the staff are all excellent—this is a truly wonderful Accommodation. One thing only: I knew it wasn’t barrier-free, but moving around inside the Facility was still quite demanding for my father, who cannot walk without a cane. The buildings and atmosphere are so beautiful that I wondered whether adding ramps or handrails might spoil the charm… but it was disappointing to feel that this place may be difficult to use for guests who need assistance with walking. Other than that, everything was truly outstanding, and I would love to stay again. This time we stayed in the Room called “Kanho.”

As described.
There is only an orientation at the lobby reception; there is no pick-up service or assistance with carrying luggage. This is stated on the information sheet, but in return, the price is extremely reasonable for how spacious and lovely the Room is. Antiques and Gabbeh rugs are placed here and there, decorating the large Accommodation. The meals seem to be prepared by a female head chef. They are healthy yet filling, and the pork shabu-shabu was thick-cut and generously portioned. Above all, it was delicious—excellent meat with very little scum. The Onsen water is lukewarm, and in the Room you heat it yourself as needed. In the large public bath, the indoor bath is lukewarm while the outdoor bath is at a comfortable temperature. The water quality is mildly alkaline with little odor, which feels pleasant. A variety of aromatherapy body soaps were provided; they all smelled wonderful, and I bought some oil on my way home. Some guests may feel frustrated about limited interaction with staff or fewer amenities being set out in advance, but it was perfect for our family. My parents in their 80s said they want to come again.

Sarugakyo Onsen Hatagoya Maruichi (Founded in the Edo Period) Accommodation
The peaceful, relaxing atmosphere left a strong impression. With the charm of an Edo-era establishment, this is a wonderful Accommodation where adults can unwind at a leisurely pace. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and it was clear that each dish was prepared with great care. We enjoyed taking our time and savoring every bite. This time we stayed in a guest room with a private Onsen, so we could enjoy the Onsen as many times as we liked whenever we wanted—an incredibly luxurious experience. The water wasn’t too hot; it was slightly warm, just the right temperature for soaking slowly and comfortably. On the other hand, getting from the room to the large public bath or dining area requires walking outdoors, so it may feel a bit inconvenient in winter or on rainy days. Overall, this was an extremely satisfying Accommodation that I would recommend to anyone looking to relax in a quiet setting or fully enjoy excellent meals and an Onsen experience.

I had a quiet and relaxing stay.
This was our second stay at this Accommodation. We returned because the meals here are healthy, and the barley-fed pork shabu-shabu was very delicious. It was also nice that smoking is allowed on the Room balcony. Many Ryokan these days do not allow smoking... On our way home, we were told where to buy the barley-fed pork, and we placed an order.

An Accommodation dedicated to reducing labor costs
This Accommodation is one of the most historic in Sarugakyo Onsen. It is a lodge-style Ryokan set on a vast property, with detached Rooms scattered throughout. The owner seems to have a very distinctive vision; I arrived by car, but the layout makes it hard to tell where the entrance or front desk is. Guests must first find the front desk, and after check-in you have to carry your own luggage to your detached Room. The dining area is also in a separate building, so you need to go outside each time. In other words, everything is spread out, and on rainy days you’ll need an umbrella to get to the large public bath and the dining area. I felt this Accommodation is not barrier-free at all. The free-flowing Onsen baths in each Room and the food served at the dining area are excellent, but staffing has been kept to a minimum. Service feels similar to a Business Hotel: you pick up your yukata and amenities at the front desk and take them back to your Room yourself. This was my first time staying at an Onsen Ryokan with this style, and opinions will likely depend on personal preference.

So close!
Chosen via the “sauna available” search filter. It seems the extra fee is meant to create a sense of privacy, but it’s expensive. If the goal is to prevent it from being overcrowded, something like an additional 1,000 yen per night would be better.

Thank you for your hospitality. The meals and the Room were wonderful, and I would love to visit again. The atmosphere was great, and above all, it was an Accommodation where I could truly relax. Thank you very much.

A historic Accommodation that blends vintage charm with a clean, well-kept atmosphere
I stayed with both dinner and breakfast included. First of all, the charming building, where you can fully feel its history, was wonderful. At the same time, it was thoroughly cleaned and felt very fresh and spotless. The meals were also delicious and very satisfying. The tableware was beautiful as well, and lovely pieces were also sold at the front desk. The Onsen was piping hot and felt great. There wasn’t much communication with the staff, but in those moments they responded cheerfully, which I appreciated. In particular, thank you to the dining staff for their pleasant service. Overall, it’s an Accommodation that feels just right in every way—one I’d like to visit again.

The private room's onsen was very relaxing during my previous stay, which made me return. However, the water temperature was higher this time, which was a bit disappointing. The public bath was spacious and had the perfect temperature. Overall, I think it’s a wonderful accommodation that stays true to its concept. I hope the hairdryer in the room can be updated soon as it is old and lacks power!

First-time Use
Always choosing a Ryokan with a private open-air bath is a delightful challenge. This time, I stayed at Maruichi for the first time. Although it was during the cold season, the Room was warm, and we were able to relax and enjoy our time together as a couple. Thank you very much! I look forward to staying again in the future. Please take care of us then as well!

It was a pleasant stay.
This was our first time staying at this accommodation. While the service was described as simple, the staff were very pleasant, and we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere that felt like a hotel. The meals, both breakfast and dinner, featured fresh ingredients; dinner was hearty, and the glass of wine was exceptionally delicious. To access the public bath required walking outside, so we opted for a room with an onsen instead of just a bathtub—and it turned out to be a great choice. The size surprised us as it could fit two people comfortably; we ended up using it multiple times because it felt so nice. We could control the water temperature ourselves without any issues. At night, when temperatures dropped and things got darker, it felt slightly unsettling—perhaps adding blinds or something similar to cover the door of the handwashing area would help. Additionally (a minor point), serving miso soup in deeper ladles during breakfast might make pouring easier. We came without overly high expectations but found this accommodation to suit us perfectly—we look forward to staying here again!

I gifted my parents an Onsen trip.
I gift my parents Onsen trips about three times a year. They are usually very pleased, but this time, for the first time, they were not happy. This is also the first time I gave a rating other than 5 stars, as I have always rated 5 stars before. "The Onsen in the room had some brown floating particles that looked like filter dirt. The public bath's Onsen was lukewarm and cold. The private bath mentioned in the details on IKYU.com was not available." "The service was rated 1; when they asked for a second serving of miso soup at breakfast, they were told it had run out," my parents wrote to me via LINE. On the positive side, they said the room was spacious and comfortable. The massage chair provided felt great, and they slept soundly on Simmons beds. The air conditioning and kotatsu in the room kept them warm. Being in a special corner room with good sunlight made it quiet and pleasant. They also found both breakfast and dinner easy to eat. Since they've always been happy before, I felt a bit disappointed this time around.

Onsen
The Onsen water was not the best. However, I think it is a good Ryokan for elderly couples.

It was a relaxing experience.
I stayed in a detached Room with my husband for one night. The Room was spacious, clean, and allowed us to relax comfortably. The meals were delicious, especially the vegetables and sukiyaki, leaving us completely satisfied. Personally, I found the portion size perfect—too much food can lead to waste. This Ryokan is excellent for enjoying a quiet and private stay. It has become a place I would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

Thank you!
The meals were very delicious. The sense of design in the room was excellent, and having a kotatsu was delightful. The indoor large bath was warm, but the outdoor Onsen felt a bit lukewarm, which might be slightly challenging for those sensitive to cold. It truly was a wonderful stay. Thank you very much!

Perfect balance of privacy and connection
At check-in (and check-out), interaction with the staff was limited to the front desk, and there was no accompanying to the room, which maintained a comfortable distance. Check-out was smooth as it could be completed at the front desk in advance, and leaving the key in the room avoided any rush or congestion, leaving a positive impression. The room is an independent unit, making it quiet with ample space and excellent usability. Meals were vegetable-rich, which suited us older guests well. That said, there were also dishes like sukiyaki and steak; while we initially worried about finishing everything on the menu, the beef was not overly fatty and very enjoyable. However, while staff members (young and energetic with a good impression) worked hard during meal service, their timing for serving dishes could use some improvement. Additionally, having all guests dine together felt slightly out of place for this level of accommodation—simple partitions like semi-private rooms or curtains would have been appreciated. The Onsen temperature was on the cooler side due to its natural source; however, reheating in the morning took time before it became usable again—a bit disappointing. While I’ve pointed out some minor criticisms here for improvement purposes overall this accommodation left a very positive impression!

First Visit to Sarugakyo Onsen
I was familiar with Minakami Onsen, but this was my first time visiting Sarugakyo Onsen, and I felt a bit anxious. However, we decided to stay for two nights to celebrate my wife’s birthday since she loves being near the lake. We arrived slightly before check-in time by car. There was no sign of anyone coming out to greet us, which I actually liked—it makes me nervous when someone comes out to welcome us (laughs). From the parking lot, we walked to the front desk following the signs while carrying our luggage. Despite arriving early, we were able to check in right away. After receiving our key and heading to our room, we took our time bringing in our belongings and relaxed until dinner. The room was spacious and felt so comfortable—almost like coming back home. The hands-off approach of the accommodation suited us perfectly; it made for a very relaxing stay while still ensuring all of our needs were met when requested. The private onsen bath in the room, large public bathhouse, dinner, and breakfast were all excellent. We had such a peaceful and enjoyable two days. Not only was the accommodation wonderful but also the local people we encountered in town were incredibly kind—it felt like returning home and brought a sense of comfort and healing. We would love to come back during another season! Thank you for taking care of us during this memorable stay!

Sarugakyo Onsen
The staff's warm smiles and kind words were truly comforting, and the serene design of the room along with the Onsen bath provided a relaxing experience. Both dinner and breakfast are served in the dining area, accompanied by lovely music and an abundance of delicious dishes. The meals were well-balanced with plenty of vegetables, and it was convenient to request rice and soup at your preferred timing. It would be wonderful to visit when the weeping cherry blossoms in the courtyard are in bloom.

Service is minimal but not bad. If you consider it as a vacation rental with meals included, it is satisfying. The meals were carefully prepared with selected ingredients, very delicious, and gentle on the body. I will visit again.

Healing Accommodation
It seems that it became an Onsen about 2-3 years ago, as it wasn't one before. The room bath was spacious and excellent. The large public bath had a retro feel, which was nice, but the stone stairs might be dangerous for elderly guests walking at night. The dining area is not private rooms, but the space is wide enough that other guests didn’t bother us. We had a very relaxing stay, so we will make a reservation for November and visit with our grandchildren in a large group.

Places to Visit Each Season
I thought I knew everything about Gunma Prefecture, but visiting Maruichi for the first time felt like discovering a hidden treasure. However, as this is a well-known traditional Onsen Ryokan, I realized how much I still had to learn. Upon entering Maruichi's grounds from the main road, there was an immediate sense of stepping into another world. The property is beautifully maintained; even during this season when nature can quickly become unruly, every detail was carefully attended to. The accommodations named after successive owners offered privacy and were perfect for rejuvenating while enjoying the fresh greenery of the garden. Additionally, having an Onsen in the room was ideal for those seeking relaxation at their own pace. One downside was that being close to the large communal bath meant conversations from the open-air bath echoed loudly and disrupted the tranquility at times. The meals were exceptional, showcasing seasonal vegetables in beautifully crafted dishes. The staff’s attentiveness and ability to match each guest’s pace made dining a truly enjoyable experience. Even something as simple as white rice left a lasting impression—it tasted so delicious that many guests seemed to go back for seconds with gratitude in their expressions after being freed from concerns over recent rice shortages in Japan (Reiwa Rice Crisis). With checkout at 11:00 AM, we had time to relax once more in our room's Onsen before departing safely on our journey home feeling refreshed and recharged. Of course! I've registered my card and plan to visit again each season to enjoy fresh seasonal vegetables anew!

Fully satisfied with the private bath and meals!
We stayed with the anniversary plan to celebrate my elderly mother's birthday. We enjoyed soaking in the onsen with natural hot spring water at our preferred temperature and timing. The dinner, featuring Joshu beef sukiyaki, sashimi of Gin-Hikari trout, and local vegetables, was absolutely delicious. The celebratory champagne and dessert plate were accompanied by warm hospitality from the staff, which made my mother very happy! The breakfast was also delightful with homemade miso soup, pickles, and locally sourced rice. There were two points of concern: The outdoor bath in the large communal bath was said to be around body temperature but felt cooler than that in mid-May—more like a warm swimming pool. Due to the ryokan's policy of carrying luggage ourselves, we had difficulty rolling suitcases on the path leading to the annex from the main building. I had to carry my mother's suitcase by hand, which was quite challenging. That said, these inconveniences were minor compared to everything else. We loved the historical architecture and atmosphere of the property as well as its art collection (the Seitsu room where we stayed displayed about five works by Tsuguharu Foujita). If given another opportunity, we would love to visit again!

A very quiet and relaxing accommodation.
We stayed here to celebrate my wife's birthday. From the website, it was hard to grasp the overall atmosphere of the accommodation, but upon arrival, we understood its charm. Each area offers a sense of privacy, making it feel like a hidden retreat for adults. The room was bright and clean. Due to the cold weather outside, we ended up only using the onsen in our room. The dining area is housed in a warm and inviting building. As someone else mentioned, I felt that the timing for clearing dishes could be improved slightly. It might be better if dishes were cleared when serving the next course to maintain the ambiance more effectively. We ordered a sake tasting set but had to ask them not to take it away while we were still drinking it. However, both dinner and breakfast were delicious without exception. Thank you very much!

Travel with Anniversary Benefits
This time, we chose Hatagoya Maruichi for our trip near the Kanto area, as it offered the perfect anniversary and birthday perks we were looking for. The birthday perks, which are rarely mentioned in reviews, exceeded our expectations. We called in advance to arrange a surprise and asked them to keep it a secret until dessert time. The whole cake was absolutely adorable. Both its appearance and taste were outstanding, making us glad we chose Maruichi. Additionally, the staff's courteous service throughout our stay was truly appreciated. For dinner, we enjoyed shabu-shabu and sukiyaki. The steamed vegetables served at breakfast were healthy and delicious as well. The fireplace at the front desk was very warm, allowing us to relax on the sofa without worrying about others. The quiet front desk had a calm atmosphere with gentle service. If you're planning an anniversary trip near Kanto, I highly recommend Hatagoya Maruichi.

Perfect for a casual visit.
Great accommodation with a pleasant environment. There was one bug, but we let it out through the window and felt good about it in the end. The building and entire premises are clean, and the surrounding scenery is soothing. The compact layout of the property makes it easy to navigate and perfect for strolling around without getting tired. A casual 10-minute walk followed by a bath became our routine here. For those who prefer not to venture far for sightseeing, this place is ideal! The property has a cozy atmosphere that made us think, "It would be wonderful to live in such a house." We enjoyed spotting rare cats (one had an injured leg) while walking through the garden towards the vending machine near the bathhouse. The outdoor slippers at the entrance added charm to our experience as first-time visitors—it was fun! While not fully all-inclusive, there’s enough flexibility for guests to adjust their comfort level themselves, which we appreciated. Dinner portions were quite generous; skipping lunch after a late breakfast turned out to be wise. About dinner: As someone who often cooks hot pot at home as part of daily life, I initially felt indifferent about having hot pot here—but both sauces (umami-rich tare sauce and sesame sauce) were delicious! Having two options made it feel special. While I wanted freshly cooked warm dishes throughout dinner, I also wished for smaller portions so that every bite could be savored until the end—perhaps offering additional items as optional extras? Still, everything was tasty! Despite being vegetable-heavy (which we loved), we managed to finish everything since we're big breakfast eaters. Speaking of vegetables—the pickles were outstanding! Being autumn season meant plenty of myoga ginger pickles—a delightful bonus that made us so happy we even ordered extra pickles despite feeling full afterward... Back in our room post-dinner exhaustion hit hard; pro tip: have your futon laid out before eating! We also bought furikake seasoning as souvenirs—it’s now part of every meal back home! This moist blend with sansho pepper isn’t overly spicy but has rich flavors from bonito flakes and sesame seeds—absolutely delicious. Another highlight: there’s a liquor store just one minute away on foot where staff kindly let us use their restroom upon arrival earlier than check-in time—they even have great snack selections too! If only they offered delivery service until 8 PM… But honestly? Even minor inconveniences added charm during our stay here. Drinking tap water was safe; overall comfort levels were high throughout our visit except perhaps wishing they’d offer more relaxed courses focused on light snacks paired with baths before bedtime instead of heavy meals alone—we’d love something like veggie platters paired perfectly with relaxation routines involving baths & sleep cycles tailored toward ultimate rejuvenation experiences here someday soon!
