The property is showing its age.

The Accommodation felt noticeably dated in places. The riverside dining had a great atmosphere and was enjoyable. It may be best just to use the restaurant without staying overnight.

    It was excellent.

It was excellent. There were four highlights in particular. 1. Riverside dining. Eating near the river has a wonderful atmosphere. You hear frogs and birds, and their sounds change over time. The sound of the rapids stays constant while subtly shifting. As it gets darker outside, the overall colors gradually change. Lights come on. Even the air changes—what feels bright and cheerful becomes cooler and refreshingly crisp. It’s fascinating how, compared with the start of the meal, it can feel as if you’ve moved to a completely different place. In that setting, dish after dish is served—luxurious, plentiful, and delicious. And after having some drinks and getting pleasantly tipsy, by the time it hits you the scenery around you has transformed as well, which adds even more charm to the experience. 2. Fireflies in flight. About a one-minute walk from the Accommodation, we were able to see many fireflies. The path is very dark, so you need to be careful—darker than expected. Countless fireflies were flying through the space between a bridge and the river below it. Some even came within about a meter right in front of us. We could clearly see them flying—and we saw so many of them. The swirling dance of blinking lights conveys something mysterious about life itself. 3. Private Onsen baths. There are four private Onsen baths, and every one was wonderful. I think the water quality is excellent—a slightly sulfur-scented Onsen. It’s my favorite type of water quality personally; I don’t find places like Shuzenji, Izunokuni (Izu-Nagaoka), Yugawara, or Izu-Kogen quite as good for my taste, but I really liked Yugashima’s Onsen. 4. The river view from our Room terrace. Even more than the view itself, hearing all the natural outdoor sounds—including the flow of the river—was incredibly soothing. I brought a Mozart DVD and asked staff to prepare a DVD player for me, but while listening to Yugashima’s river and nature sounds I completely forgot to watch opera at all. There wasn’t anything negative in particular.

    It was great.

It took quite a while for hot water to come out of the large public bath shower. Other than that, everything was great. The private open-air bath was also comfortable. I enjoyed dining on the riverside deck. The Room was spacious, and I was able to work there as well.

Great views along the mountain stream

I stayed in the "Sound of the River" room, where I could enjoy a view of the mountain stream from inside and relax in an open-air bath while listening to the gentle flow. Meals were served on a riverside deck, and although I was worried about the cold since it was winter, transparent sheets and plastic panels blocked out the outside air, with stoves and heated tables provided, so it wasn't too chilly. The room had been renovated and was clean, but the large public bath remained old-fashioned; it took 2-3 minutes for hot water to come out of the shower, which made me think it might be broken. I'd love to experience dining on the riverside deck in summer next time. Thank you!

    The location was great, but...

The room was spacious, and the open-air bath was excellent. The meals were average, but the riverside location was a highlight. However, the service was disappointing. Having many foreign staff nowadays is not an issue; in fact, I appreciated their effort to provide attentive and heartfelt service at this Ryokan. The problem lies with the Japanese staff. Check-in and check-out are crucial moments for guest interaction, just like during meals when face-to-face communication is frequent. At check-out, there was only one person at the front desk—this is understandable given staffing shortages. Self-service for tea, water, and rice during meals also seems reasonable under such circumstances. However, considering the price level of this accommodation (30,000 yen for two people without alcohol), it felt slightly mismatched with expectations. During check-out conversations with a Japanese staff member, I felt an odd discomfort that I later realized resembled convenience store clerk behavior: casual tone of voice, lack of eye contact throughout interactions—not incorrect but not entirely appropriate either. If they were busy or unfamiliar with proper Japanese etiquette due to inexperience or other reasons—that would be acceptable—but ultimately hospitality comes down to treating guests sincerely as individuals deserving care and respect—a sentiment conveyed through eye contact or gestures naturally yet noticeably absent here. It’s disheartening when foreign staff excel while local employees fall short in comparison... I'm not asking for overly formal service; even high school part-time workers at family restaurants seem more capable these days. Room quality and location deserve top marks (◎). Meals were average but questionable value-wise (△) since 30k yen could cover fine dining elsewhere comfortably without drinks included. Service unfortunately detracted from overall experience (-). In conclusion: an ordinary stay overall based on these factors combined!

    A private and tranquil space

We had a very satisfying stay. We stayed on Friday and were able to enjoy all four private baths. From the moment we arrived, the staff were kind and greeted us with smiles, allowing us to stay with peace of mind. Thank you for the wonderful memories.

    The riverbed cuisine is excellent.

I travel 7 to 8 times a year, and this was an accommodation with good cost performance and well-trained staff. However, in the case of a standard Japanese-style room for two people, the futon was already laid out, which left a disappointing first impression. The outdoor bath "Kaguya no Yu" was in use from check-in, and when I reported it to the front desk, it turned out to be a malfunction in the detection system. I thought it would be good to have a checking function. Other than that, I was very satisfied. The wasabi hot pot in the riverbed cuisine was fresh as it's not something you get to eat often. The dedication of all the staff was evident and left a good impression. Next time, I would like to book an outdoor bath room, which I couldn't get this time. I thought I would like to make it a repeat accommodation.
