    We had a relaxing stay.

    Located on the main street, and we really enjoyed our stay. The alcohol tastings were fun, and the food was delicious. The Onsen was relaxing, with a comfortable temperature, so we could soak at length. Since it was open for long hours, we could use it both in the morning and late at night. The view was wonderful, and we were even able to see a sea of clouds. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    Hot spring hopping is the best!

    I have visited Ikaho several times for Onsen-hopping, and this time I stayed at Kishigon, which I had wanted to try for a while.\n\nI really enjoyed visiting the three different baths. In particular, Gonzaemon-no-Yu had a wonderful atmosphere and became my favorite.\n\nWhen I visited Ikaho last time, I stayed at another Onsen Accommodation with the same Golden Hot Spring water, but it was disappointingly lukewarm, so I was a bit worried. However, at Kishigon the temperature was just right for me and it was excellent.\n\nThe view from the Room was great as well. At the post-bath lounge area (available only during certain hours), we could enjoy alcoholic drinks, and in the lounge we could have coffee.\n\nSince the stone steps are right in front of the Accommodation, it was easy to take a stroll after check-in or after dinner.\n\nOverall, it was great value—there were so many things to enjoy at a reasonable price.

    The Room is spacious, and the meals are satisfying.

    It was our first time staying here, and since my husband has difficulty walking, they gave us a step-free Room, so we were able to relax and feel at ease. The meals were more than enough—so much that we couldn’t finish everything. However, what was disappointing was that although we were allowed to park right in front of the Ryokan, my husband can’t carry luggage and can barely walk while holding onto his walker, yet I was pulling his backpack and bag as well as my suitcase by myself. All they did was say, “The elevator is over there!”—not a single “Shall we carry it for you?” The check-in explanation was handled by a foreign staff member, but another staff member at the counter just watched in silence... I ended up putting one bag on my husband’s cart and having him push it himself, but even so, I was shocked by the lack of assistance. If not for that, it would have been a perfect score!!

    Historic Ryokan

    This is a very historic Ryokan located partway up the stone steps. It’s an excellent location for sightseeing around the steps. We drove up a very narrow, steep road to reach the front of the Ryokan. The staff assisted us right away and moved our car to a parking lot quite far away. The next morning, we used the Shuttle Service by bus to get to the parking lot, and I was surprised at how far it was. They offered welcome drinks and ice pops. The staff were attentive and well trained—just what you’d expect from a Ryokan with 450 years of history. These days many guests are international, so most of the staff are also from overseas; this place was no exception. There are three baths, and the Golden Hot Spring was wonderful. Dinner was carefully prepared across every dish and tasted great. Breakfast was also delicious. If I had one request, it would be having a restroom inside the bath area. I bathed with my 3-year-old grandchild who needed to use the toilet, which felt inconvenient. It’s a Ryokan I’d like to stay at again when traveling to Ikaho.

    The hot water was great, but...

    The hot spring water was excellent, and I was also pleased with the welcome of cold green tea and an Onsen steamed bun served in the lobby at check-in. There is also a footbath outside the Accommodation that can be used not only by guests but also by passersby, which I felt is a unique charm of this long-established Onsen. On the other hand, at dinner our server was a foreign staff member, so there was not enough explanation of the dishes, and I was confused about which dishes to use the three different sauces/seasonings with. It was also disappointing that there were long gaps between courses, leaving us waiting quite a while for the next dish. In addition, I had some concerns about how the futon was set up in the Room. It was laid out with my head toward the entrance, which felt odd, and it was positioned where the air conditioner blew directly on me, so I couldn’t sleep comfortably. I should have adjusted it myself before going to bed, but I ended up leaving it as it was and felt slightly disappointed.

    I felt the distinguished charm of a long-established Ryokan.

    Dinner was excellent, and I appreciated the thoughtful way it was served. While preserving the traditional Hotel building and the Room’s classic design, modern conveniences have been incorporated, and operations feel efficient and well managed. The staff also seemed very well trained.

    A wonderful Ryokan.

    Thank you for the wonderful gift celebrating your approximately 450-year history. With such a rich heritage, I believe this is one of Ikaho’s most traditional Accommodations. The bath was also the “Golden Hot Spring,” and its gentle water felt very pleasant on the skin. There are many baths within the building, so we were able to enjoy a hot-spring hopping experience.

    A wonderful experience from the moment you arrive.

    After leaving our car with the staff, we were shown to a lounge by the window overlooking greenery and welcomed with a famous Onsen manju and sencha—an experience that instantly lifted our mood. The Room we were lucky enough to book on IKYU at the last minute was on the top floor, and the view was outstanding. Even at Golden Week rates, it felt well worth it—a great Accommodation overall. The complimentary lounge was wonderful, and I especially enjoyed refills of the apple vinegar drink. The free drinks in the lobby were available until 22:00, and the matcha latte was delicious too. The table tennis for 500 yen was fun, and with direct access to the stone steps, we could take walks in both the morning and at night. The golden hot spring bath was amazing—we’d love to stay again. The Japanese-style Room also had an excellent retro feel and was incredibly relaxing.

    This was our second ...

    This was our second visit to Kishigon Ryokan, combining it with a birthday celebration. When making the Reservation, my partner and I mentioned that it was our birthday month, and we were pleasantly surprised by a complimentary glass of wine at dinner—such a thoughtful touch. Some areas, including the private bath, had been renovated and were very clean and comfortable.

    Used for my first trip to Ikaho.

    The Onsen, especially the Golden Bath, was excellent. Dinner was delicious and beautifully presented, making it a truly happy time. For breakfast, I had seconds of the fried manju. (Everything else was also delicious.) The Room was a comfortable Japanese-Western style room. The pajamas were comfortable as well. I would definitely like to stay again.

    Disappointed

    I chose this place because of its high ratings, but in reality it was a major disappointment. The worst part was the staff’s attitude and manners. Whether they were too busy with other guests or just doing the bare minimum at their own station, even when they did explain things, they simply rattled off a large amount of information in a one-sided way. It was hard to understand, and I ended up wandering around the property; even when I asked other staff members, I couldn’t get clear answers. There was no advance guidance about parking spaces, and both the Shuttle Service procedure and attitude were unpleasant. The dinner menu was said to be top-tier, but for the most part the ingredients, presentation, and overall staging all felt half-baked. When I requested a second green tea packet in my Room, they acted reluctant to provide it—eventually responding as if to say, “That’s all you get…” I also expected an old-established Ryokan atmosphere from the building itself, but the renovation actually felt out of place and there wasn’t even a hint of charm.

    Premium Kishigon Ryokan

    Worried about a snow forecast, we stopped for udon in rainy Mizusawa before heading to Kishigon Ryokan in Ikaho. Perhaps because it was Hinamatsuri on 3/3, we were welcomed at check-in with delicious sakura mochi and tea. The building had a dignified historic atmosphere and was impeccably clean, which raised our expectations. The view from the room was wonderful. Snow began to flutter down in the evening, and by the next morning the mountains were beautifully covered in white—truly moving. Despite the drizzle, we took a walk to the Stone Steps Street right in front of the Ryokan, then enjoyed two Onsen baths. Both the bathing areas and changing rooms were spotless. The amenities were excellent as well, including a ReFa hair dryer. Dinner was outstanding—the chef’s carefully crafted menu deserved high praise, and everything was delicious. A young staff member who served us explained each dish and shared some of Kishigon Ryokan’s history; even while saying she was still training, her attentive service reflected the quality of this long-established Ryokan. The next morning we visited the annex’s open-air Onsen with snow views. Maybe it was the water quality, but my skin stayed amazingly smooth for days after returning home. With this level of service at this price, I have no complaints at all. The staff’s bright, courteous hospitality made me want to come back again—highly recommended.

    Our family of three (a couple and our ninth-grade daughter) stayed for one night during spring break. We booked a Plan with breakfast only (no dinner), and overall it was a very satisfying stay. We usually stay at a Hotel when we travel, so this was our first time in a Ryokan in quite a while, and it reminded us of the unique charm you can only find at this kind of Accommodation. The location next to the stone-step street was also a highlight—just stepping outside let us immediately enjoy the distinctive Ikaho atmosphere. The Onsen was especially memorable, and we went in many times during our stay. It had a strong iron scent, and the water really felt rich in minerals—an authentic hot-spring experience. The breakfast buffet was also excellent. It had that classic Ryokan morning feel, and even without dinner included, we felt fully satisfied because we could truly enjoy breakfast. It was a bit disappointing that it rained the next day and the view looked slightly hazy, but even that added to the calm, relaxing time that feels so characteristic of a Ryokan. The parking lot is a little far away; although Shuttle Service is available, it did feel slightly inconvenient. Other than that, we were very happy with our stay.

    As always, a very satisfying accommodation.

    We have stayed three times over the past year, and each time we are impressed by how comfortable this Ryokan is. There may not be any flashy services, but the Onsen is wonderfully relaxing and the meals are highly satisfying. The staff’s hospitality is excellent, and the Room cleaning is thorough. The views are also beautiful: from its location on the slopes of Mt. Haruna, you can enjoy clear vistas of Mt. Tanigawa and other peaks of the Mikuni mountain range. This long-established Ryokan sits along Ikaho’s famous stone steps; it isn’t showy, but it’s an Accommodation where you can truly unwind. We are a couple in our 70s, yet we keep coming back. We recommend that everyone visit at least once. Although we haven’t tried it ourselves, there is also a footbath at the entrance beside the stone steps, and it always seems to be enjoyed by many people.

    A Cozy Ryokan with a Historic Onsen

    The 450-year-old Onsen was pleasantly warm rather than too hot, with a mild scent, making it comfortable to soak for a long time. At this Ryokan, you can enjoy the Onsen in three locations: a cypress open-air bath, a large public bath, and an observation bath. All the Facility areas were well maintained and very pleasant to use. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a spacious hall-like venue. The meals featured traditional Japanese cuisine unique to a Ryokan, with plenty of seasonal ingredients and a wide variety of dishes, which was very satisfying. Breakfast was buffet-style with an extensive selection. The Room was also kept very clean, and water and ice were conveniently available at various points on the floor. In the lounge, complimentary drinks such as coffee as well as mini ice creams were available to enjoy for free. Although it is a historic Ryokan, the Facility is kept in excellent condition and it feels like they understand guests’ needs very well; overall I was extremely satisfied with everything, including the price.

    Value beyond the price

    This was my first visit to this long-established Ryokan in Ikaho, despite having been to the area several times. Although it was a weekday before the winter holidays, the Facility and Onsen were almost flawless. (The number of baths, water quality, and bathing hours were sufficient. However, the razors in the bath area could be improved but are at a general standard.) As for meals, they were "typical of an Onsen Ryokan" in a way, but efforts such as serving barley rice with grated yam and udon separately showed their thoughtfulness. (That said, for dinner, there seemed room for improvement with pre-prepared sashimi (the shredded radish garnish was still frozen) and warm dishes served during meals. On the other hand, breakfast was absolutely delicious without any complaints.) Overall, considering the balance between content and price, it is definitely worth visiting as it offers more value than its cost.

    First Stay

    I had been wanting to stay here for a while. This time, my friend and I each used one room, and there was nothing particularly concerning. However, I felt the temperature of the bathtub was a bit low. Also, dinner felt slightly rushed. Overall, it was a good accommodation. Thank you for your hospitality.

    Luxury New Year Getaway

    The service and Onsen were excellent. The dinner was delicious, but the dishes were cleared too quickly before we finished, which felt rushed and unpleasant. The breakfast buffet was very enjoyable and tasty.

    Satisfied.

    Stayed during New Year's and was overall very satisfied. Despite being fully booked for the holiday, the staff seemed sufficient. There were no issues like delayed cleaning or lack of staff, which are common during busy periods, making it a pleasant stay. Above all, the Kishi-Ken Suite we stayed in this time was amazing! Highly recommended. The shops on the stone steps are small and crowded, so it was a bit disappointing that the souvenir shop inside the hotel was also very small.

    It was a Ryokan with a calm atmosphere and a sense of tradition.

    The building is old, so the Facility feels a bit dated, but it was a Ryokan with a great atmosphere. Being adjacent to the stone stair street makes it convenient for strolling around town. The Yunohana Manju served upon arrival was delicious! Additionally, all the staff were very kind and welcoming, showcasing true hospitality. Thanks to them, we had a wonderful holiday.

    Noticeable Decline in Service - Premium Dormy Inn

    This was our fifth stay at Ikaho Onsen, as it had been our regular accommodation. However, compared to previous visits, the quality and service have declined significantly, leaving us disappointed. Our family also felt let down and is considering switching to other ryokans like Kogure or Chiaki for future stays. - **Mistake in Private Onsen Reservation** We intended to reserve the private onsen at 8:15 PM before bedtime for both days since we were traveling with small children. However, only the first day was mistakenly booked at 3:15 PM instead. Fortunately, we managed to adjust both days to 8:15 PM after confirming twice with repeated checks on our end. Despite this effort, it seems the ryokan staff failed to process the change properly or misunderstood it entirely. As a result, we ended up using the bath before dinner on one day; unfortunately, this caused our child to catch a cold due to getting chilled afterward and fall ill during what turned out to be a disappointing trip. The female staff member in charge insisted that it was our mistake without showing any sign of remorse. - **Communication Issues** During our stay, we had asked for our car parked at Ishidan Street's lower parking lot to be moved closer in front of the ryokan entrance parking area but received no notification about its relocation status afterward—leading us into confusion when trying unexpectedly accessing items left inside earlier! Retrieving keys later lacked proper communication too; overall wasting precious time (~1 hour & half) unnecessarily frustrating experience altogether! Additionally noticeable shortage among employees created tense atmosphere throughout operations lacking composure evident everywhere around premises! - **No Improvements Made To Public Bath Area** Despite previously pointing out sharp mineral deposits (yuno-hana) stuck dangerously onto surfaces via feedback surveys submitted earlier trips ago still remain unaddressed posing injury risks especially concerning young children safety concerns persist unresolved till date ongoing neglect apparent visible corrosion wooden outdoor baths detached nails exposed hazards ignored maintenance oversight unacceptable conditions observed firsthand alarming negligence displayed repeatedly unchecked deteriorations worsening overtime continued disregard customer welfare expectations unmet     An Accommodation You'll Want to Visit Again

    This was my second stay following spring, and I was very satisfied once again. First, regarding the meals, dinner was elaborate with beautiful presentation and excellent taste, which I thoroughly enjoyed. While younger guests might find the portions slightly small, as a relatively hearty eater at 70 years old, I found the amount to be just right. Breakfast was a buffet with a wide variety of delicious options that tempted me to take more than I could eat. The room wasn't new but was well-cleaned and felt comfortable. It faced the northern slope with an open view where I could see Mount Naeba covered in snow in the distance—such beautiful mountains! Of course, the Onsen featured Ikaho's famous hot spring water that provided warmth and relaxation; however, it felt slightly lukewarm for my preference. What stood out most were the thoughtful hospitality and excellent service from all staff members at the accommodation—just like during my previous visit. The staff member from Indonesia also provided refreshing and pleasant service. This experience makes me want to return again!

    I was soothed by the Onsen and hospitality for my father's birthday.

    We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my elderly father's birthday. While searching for an onsen with natural hot spring water near the stone steps, we were fortunate to find our desired room available on a day that worked for us, despite weekend reservations being difficult to secure. We arrived around 2:30 PM on the day of our stay. Although it was slightly early, the accommodation was already bustling with guests. The lobby offered complimentary coffee and other drinks, allowing us to relax comfortably. The onsen featured golden-colored natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source, providing a truly blissful experience of "happiness in soaking." Despite being a busy day with many guests, we were able to enjoy bathing without any significant crowding. The meals were all carefully prepared and delicious, encouraging even my usually light-eating parents to eat heartily. When I mentioned it was my father's birthday during booking, they kindly prepared an impressive bouquet (for an additional fee), which made him very happy. They also provided thoughtful touches such as gold-leaf-infused aperitifs and celebratory sake service—heartwarming hospitality that deeply moved us. Everything from the onsen and cuisine to customer service was exceptional, making this stay truly memorable. My father was delighted beyond words; it turned out to be a wonderful birthday celebration for him. We are filled with gratitude for their kindness and care. Thank you so much! We would love to visit again in the future!

    There are many baths...

    There are many baths, so it wasn't crowded, and I could relax and enjoy them. However, it was disappointing that the water temperature in the observation bath was low.

    The location allowed us to fully enjoy Ikaho Onsen. It reflects the charm of a long-established inn.

    Midway on the Stone Staircase

    Located midway up the stone staircase, you can enjoy the charming stone stairway street without feeling the climb too much, and you'll arrive in no time. The private open-air bath had a wonderful atmosphere and was very relaxing. The meals offered a wide variety of dishes, and the individual pot-cooked rice was incredibly delicious. At first, I thought it might be too much food, but I ended up finishing everything! While not brand new, it evokes the charm of a traditional Ryokan with cleanliness and comfort that made for an enjoyable stay. Thank you very much!

    The overall experience had many positive aspects, so I gave a slightly generous score. Personally, there were also many surprises. Room & Amenities: 2 → The tatami seemed to have been replaced and was relatively clean. The view from the window was of nearby mountains, so it was average. However, the creaking floor in the hallway was severe (-1), and the shower in the bathroom only provided hot water (quite hot) with no cold water at all (-2). Although I asked Ryokan staff to check it once, they couldn't fix it immediately and mentioned that another person would look into it later. It seemed like it would take time and likely wouldn't be resolved within a day, so I declined further assistance. Overall, considering the price point, I wanted to give a score of 5 but settled on this rating due to these issues. Service: 3 → The Japanese woman at reception during check-in brought down my rating by -3 points. Her attitude wasn't very pleasant from our first interaction. A tablet displaying guest names, addresses, and phone numbers was left out openly during check-in; when I pointed this out, her response felt dismissive. Additionally, after returning from dinner to my room, I found that futons were not laid out yet—it wasn’t clear if this was self-service or not—so I called reception and was told they were doing them in order. Since we ate late compared to others' schedules, this delay felt excessive; however shortly after calling (within minutes), staff came over—perhaps they had forgotten? Other than this middle-aged receptionist's behavior being unpleasant every time we encountered her face-to-face throughout our stay—the rest of their team provided excellent service! Especially commendable were foreign staff members who handled everything wonderfully. Onsen/Bath: 4 → Nothing particularly unique here; fairly standard facilities overall with three free public baths available (not private ones). All baths felt simple yet slightly cramped while outdoor Onsen lacked any remarkable views. Facility: 4 → Again nothing stood out uniquely but having water dispensers placed conveniently around various areas proved subtly helpful! Meals: 5 → Considering pricing levels meals deserve high praise! Dinner scored full marks thanks largely due portion sizes being just right alongside delicious flavors across dishes served! Breakfast buffet earned "4" instead since variety seemed somewhat limited though taste remained good especially curry & beef items standing-out positively! Overall Satisfaction Score :3 Access-wise location near stone steps made things convenient enough however repeated encounters seeing same unwelcoming demeanor displayed repeatedly by aforementioned middle-aged female receptionist soured mood significantly hence final satisfaction reflects accordingly
