Retro and stylish. I was able to relax to the fullest—it was a wonderful hot-spring retreat.
The Accommodation has a nostalgic, retro feel while still being very stylish and lovely. This time we stayed in the “Japanese Twin with Terrace” Room—tatami flooring, low beds, and a deck terrace. What impressed me most was how comfortable the bed was! I was told it’s a Nishikawa Muatsu mattress, and it truly felt amazing—I slept unbelievably well. The pillow was also excellent, and I completely fell in love with the bedding. I’d like to use the same one at home, so I would really appreciate it if you could tell me which type of Muatsu it is. The Onsen was wonderful as well. All three private baths had their own unique charm and were beautiful. The large public bath was also very relaxing—I ended up going in many times during our stay. As soon as you soak in the Onsen, your body warms up right away. The water feels soft, and your skin becomes moisturized and silky smooth. I also loved that bath towels were provided at the baths, so you can always use a clean one. Truly excellent therapeutic bathing. Unfortunately it rained this time—but because of that, we were able to take our time at the Accommodation, soak in the Onsen slowly, and enjoy doing nothing. We chose a Plan with 12:00 checkout, so we didn’t have to rush in the morning and could enjoy the Onsen until the very end. And then—the meals. Absolutely no complaints. Each dish was carefully prepared and beautifully presented. It was a meal where you can truly enjoy every course for what it is. And something I’ll never forget: draft Yebisu beer! After it arrived, the foam gradually rose up into a rich head—it looked delicious even before tasting. And when I tried it… it really was incredible. I honestly thought there aren’t many places where draft beer tastes this good—it moved me. This “Joshu Beef & Gunma’s Blessings / Three Free Private Open-Air Baths / 12:00 Checkout / A Nostalgic Holiday” Plan was absolutely perfect for me. Shima Onsen in the rain is wonderful too. Soak in the Onsen, eat well, drink well—and sleep incredibly well. In this charming retro Accommodation, I had an amazing time that relaxed both my mind and body. All of the staff were pleasant as well, and the overall atmosphere throughout the Accommodation felt very comfortable. We felt great from start to finish during our stay. The Onsen, meals, bedding—and above all else—the warm hospitality from everyone on staff. Everything felt so comfortable that this is an Accommodation I definitely want to stay at again.

It exceeded my expectations!
This was my first long-awaited trip to Shima Onsen. As we got closer to Shima Onsen, we were greeted by lush, untouched natural scenery… Before checking in to the Accommodation, we went a little further to Lake Okushimako, where the stunning “Shima Blue” surface looked exactly like it does in travel magazines… Everything was wonderful. Kashiwaya Ryokan, located slightly outside the Onsen town area, was outstanding in every way—the Ryokan atmosphere, meals, Onsen, and the view from our Room… The complimentary coffee served in the library… All of it was excellent. And just as we reluctantly checked out and were about to step out of the entrance, there was a charming farewell with bubbles and “Thank you”… It was hospitality through and through—far beyond complete satisfaction—it made us think, “We want to come back!” I truly believe this is an Accommodation that lets you fully enjoy Shima Onsen. We would love to return again in a different season.

Relaxing Trip
The renovated traditional Ryokan is wonderful, but it was a bit disappointing that there was no shower. I understood this when I booked, but getting up and sitting down can be a little difficult since I’m not so young anymore. The private open-air bath is very nice. Although it’s no longer spring, the meals were labeled as a summer menu, but they were completely spring dishes. It would be better to describe it as a seasonal menu. I was happy that check-out was at 12:00. I was able to relax and take my time.

There is room for improvement.
I usually check Reviews, but a well-known onsen sommelier recommended it for women traveling solo, so I stayed without doing any research. I was hoping to relax while listening to the river, but I couldn’t sleep because of the snoring from the next Room. I could also hear conversations, so the walls may be thin. The dinner menu mentioned balsamic vinegar, which gave me a bad feeling—and sure enough, why were Western-style dishes served with Western tableware in the middle of a Japanese meal? Simple local ingredients would have been fine. It would also be nice if the Room had a clock, memo paper, and something to write with. The staff were all pleasant. The bath was great too.

We made wonderful memories during Golden Week.
I chose to stay here because I was drawn to the three different open-air baths. Each one had its own charm, and I truly enjoyed them all. The building itself feels like a traditional Ryokan, and its age only adds to the atmosphere with a tasteful, well-crafted design. The meals were delicious, and above all, the staff’s hospitality was outstanding. The optional sake pairing with dinner let me try local sake that’s hard to find elsewhere—highly recommended for anyone who loves sake. There is also a library where you can enjoy complimentary coffee, and with a relaxed checkout time, you can really take your time and enjoy the Ryokan itself.

This is a wonderful Accommodation you’ll want to visit again and again.
I stayed here again after my visit in February this year. It’s an Accommodation you’ll want to return to again and again. What stands out most are the three private Onsen baths. Each one is spacious and open, allowing you to relax without worrying about others. In the quiet atmosphere, I was able to unwind completely. Bath towels are provided in each changing area, and the amenities are well stocked. All of them are fully open-air baths with no roof, offering a wonderful sense of openness and deep relaxation. The meals were just as excellent as expected—each dish was carefully prepared, delicious, and highly satisfying. The quality of the ingredients and the gentle seasoning left a lasting impression. Although the building is compact, the service is attentive throughout, making this a lovely Ryokan where you can feel the staff’s warm hospitality in many small details. On the other hand, there is no elevator inside the building, so moving around requires using stairs. All private baths are on the third floor, so you need to climb somewhat steep stairs; however, sturdy handrails are installed throughout, so it didn’t feel too burdensome. They also carried large luggage to my Room for me, and checkout support was prompt as well, which was reassuring. Those with concerns about their legs or knees may want to take extra care, but it also felt like just enough exercise—and for me personally it became part of what made this stay memorable. Overall, this is an Accommodation I’d recommend to anyone looking to spend quiet time at a relaxed pace—and one that makes you want to come back. This isn’t part of my Review of the Accommodation itself, but Lake Okushima was stunningly beautiful with its “Shima Blue” color. Also, walking from central Shima Onsen town to Kashiwaya Ryokan takes about 15–20 minutes; it’s a gentle downhill path along the river with stops like a fried manju shop along the way—an ideal course for a leisurely stroll.

I stayed here as a solo traveler.
I stayed here as a solo traveler. Since meals are served in a shared dining area, I was a bit worried about being seen by others, but the partitions made it easy to relax and enjoy my meal even on my own. It also seemed like several other guests were traveling solo. The entire Accommodation was very well cleaned, and I was able to use the Room, the large public bath, and the private open-air baths comfortably. Both the Accommodation and my Room had a lovely incense fragrance, and seasonal flowers were displayed throughout—I could really feel the thoughtful attention to detail. The private baths are not Reservation-based, but most guests seemed very considerate about etiquette and time. With three different baths available, I was able to use them without much waiting. There were many younger staff members, both international and Japanese, but everyone’s hospitality was excellent. The service felt attentive while still giving me comfortable personal space. The coffee at the café space inside the Accommodation was delicious—I went back for refills several times. It may have been harder to get in during busy hours. The meals were delicious, served at just the right pace, and it was clear that care is taken with the tableware as well. I was happy with how well stocked the alcohol selection is. I was satisfied overall, but since additional dishes cannot be ordered, I think it would be even better if there were optional add-ons. Because it is so quiet both inside and outside the Accommodation, I did notice sounds from people using the stairs or from upstairs/next door rooms—but perhaps that can also be seen as part of its charm. Only yukata were provided, so having loungewear might be even more convenient. I would like to visit again in another season.

I’m glad I chose this place for my first solo trip.
I stayed at this Accommodation for my first solo trip because it had such great Reviews. Some Reviews mentioned that the meals were on the smaller side, but that wasn’t true at all—I was completely full. The dishes really brought out the natural flavors of the ingredients, and everything was so delicious I wanted to share it with someone. I also really appreciated being able to use the private open-air Onsen without a Reservation, whenever it was available. I enjoyed it many times. Being able to get a fresh bath towel each time was a big plus for me. The Room was very clean and felt luxurious, and the entire property was spotless as well. Since it’s surrounded by mountains, we did have one fairly large bug show up, but staff responded right away. Compared to larger Accommodations it’s more compact, but I didn’t feel any inconvenience or lack of amenities. The interior has a lovely retro charm. It seemed like many of the staff were from overseas. Everyone spoke polite Japanese and provided service with warm smiles and genuine care—I was truly impressed. When I visit Shima Onsen again, I’d love to come back with my family next time. Thank you very much.

A cozy Accommodation...
A cozy Accommodation. The Room had tatami mats and a bed, so I could relax comfortably. Since it was a Room near the private bath, I felt lucky to be able to hop in whenever I wanted. Because of the season, the changing area was extremely cold, but the heater warmed it up well. It was also convenient that bath towels and amenities were provided there, so I didn’t have to bring them from the Room. The dining area was partitioned by table, so we didn’t have to worry about other guests. There were lots of vegetables, and despite the generous portions it went down easily without feeling heavy afterward. And the meat was delicious! The rice portion was large. I’d heard this is an Accommodation with great food, so I ate lightly at lunch and managed to finish everything—but if I’d eaten normally, I don’t think I could have. The whole Accommodation had a consistent retro vibe, and it made sense why it’s popular with women. I loved the post-bath library lounge. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Simply put, it’s the best.
It was my first time in Shima Onsen, and I made a Reservation at this Accommodation because I wanted to relax in a quiet setting. It was absolutely the right choice. The private Onsen baths—available to use freely when vacant—were wonderful, and the meals were truly delicious. The staff were exceptionally courteous and welcoming; every dish was beautifully presented, served warm, and perfectly portioned. I was lucky enough to have the place almost entirely to myself that day and enjoyed it to the fullest. This is an Accommodation I will definitely return to. Thank you very much.

When I entered the room, I didn't notice it, but when lying on the bed, there was a sewage-like smell, possibly because of the proximity to the water facilities. Additionally, noises from the hallway and other rooms, as well as children running and making noise, were quite audible. I had read reviews beforehand mentioning noise issues and used earphones to cope with it; however, there was nothing I could do about the smell, which made it difficult to sleep well. I used both the private open-air bath and the large public bath; both were excellent. The meals included dishes that were delicious and others that didn’t suit my taste. The Joshu beef, clay pot rice, and salmon foil grill were particularly tasty. However, during meals, staff brought out dishes one after another even while we were still eating or seemed to be waiting for us to finish so they could clear plates immediately after we finished eating. This made it hard to enjoy a relaxed dining experience. Various staff members assisted us during our stay; fortunately, very few of them left a bad impression.

Relax and unwind.
The foreign staff fluent in Japanese made the stay comfortable and reassuring. They also seemed well-trained in Japanese etiquette. Both the private open-air Onsen and indoor baths were clean and pleasant.

Rainy Shima Onsen Romance
The large public bath and private baths were impeccably maintained, making them a pleasure to use. Due to the heavy rain, I experienced using a traditional Japanese umbrella for the first time while enjoying the open-air bath—what a unique memory! Dinner was very generous in portion size, and the highlight was undoubtedly the stone-grilled meat at the end—it was absolutely delicious. The omelet served at breakfast was also delightful and satisfying. I would love to stay here again. Oh, I highly recommend visiting Okushimadam before your stay!

It was a comfortable accommodation.
A cozy and well-maintained accommodation. The casual conversations and comfortable interactions with the staff during check-in/out, meals, or when passing by in the facility were pleasant, and the open-air bath was very relaxing. As someone mentioned before, the souvenirs were also quite nice. Oh, and today's fruit liqueur = tomato was exquisite!

Shima Onsen - A charming and rustic destination.
It was my first visit to this place, and I was amazed by the high water transparency that allowed me to see the riverbed. The nostalgic townscape combined with a nature cycling tour up to the mountain dam is highly recommended. By choosing an electric bicycle, you can easily navigate mountain paths while enjoying the stunning Shima Blue scenery. The tour also guides you to delicious food and wonderful spots, making it a delightful experience. At the accommodation, we enjoyed various Onsen options including three private open-air baths, a large public bath, and this time we stayed in a room with its own flowing Onsen. Each option was clean and well-maintained with perfect water temperature for relaxation. The room and Onsen were both very comfortable. Kashiwaya is located at the very beginning of the Onsen town area, so it’s slightly distanced from the main streets. However, since check-out is at 12:00 PM, we had plenty of time after breakfast to borrow bicycles for exploring the townscape. We then relaxed in their lounge with complimentary coffee before enjoying another bath prior to packing up—a truly luxurious experience! The meals were delicious and left us completely satisfied. It was a perfect getaway from our busy daily lives where we could fully indulge in what we love doing most. This is definitely a place I would love to visit again!

Family Trip
We visited for a family trip, our second visit after a long time. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious. There are three private open-air baths, and since the checkout time is late, we were able to enjoy all of them on both the arrival and checkout days. The whole family was very satisfied! The meal for our 4-year-old child was full of delicious kid-friendly dishes, which even made the middle schooler with an adult meal envious (laughs). The staff's service was also very polite and pleasant. We look forward to visiting again!

A Wonderful and Relaxing Accommodation
The staff at the Ryokan were truly welcoming, always smiling and providing kind and attentive service. Thanks to them, I had a very comfortable stay. The baths included both private and large public options, so it was never crowded. I could relax quietly and found it very soothing. The meals were served in just the right portions with a variety of ingredients, making them both delicious and enjoyable. I heard that there are many repeat guests, which makes sense because this is definitely a Ryokan I would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

Single occupancy
I found this accommodation while searching for a place to focus and finish work at the end of the fiscal year. The room was designed for solo travelers, with thoughtful arrangements for dining alone and a private open-air bath, making it a fulfilling stay. Above all, the warm smiles and hospitality of the staff left a lasting impression. With some time before check-out, I glanced out the window to see soap bubbles gently floating by—a part of their send-off service. Many ryokans now have foreign staff providing service in broken Japanese, but during my stay here, it seemed to be exclusively Japanese staff, mostly young people, which added an energetic atmosphere that I appreciated.

Bathing Delight
60s solo onsen, second stay. The room is a single room on the second floor corner. Last time it was a Japanese-style room with futon. This time, I chose a bed room where I could lounge on the bed from check-in. There was a fan heater in the dressing room of the private open-air bath, which was helpful for warming up after the bath. However, the warmth in the room was only from the air conditioner, so it was unfortunate that my feet were cold. In winter, it would be the perfect property if there was a kotatsu. The onsen was excellent in atmosphere and scenery, and I bathed five times. The meals were all delicious. I highly recommend it to those who wish for a solo onsen experience.

Everything you could wish for is here!
I used it for the first time on a long-awaited mother-daughter trip. As the title suggests, it was a wonderful Ryokan where everything you could wish for in terms of service was provided. (Such as a library with coffee and three types of open-air baths that do not require a reservation) The deliciousness of the food was, of course, complemented by the attention to the tableware, making it visually beautiful and leaving both the heart and stomach full! We added the Joshu beef steak as an option, and the flavor was amazing, it was very delicious. For those who are unsure about adding the option, I highly recommend it! Also, all the staff were smiling and kind, making our stay very pleasant. It's a perfect 5-star experience! I would love to use it again. It was a wonderful Ryokan that made me really like Shima Onsen. Thank you very much.

Thank you very much.
It was a cozy and homey Stays, with attention to detail and cleanliness, making it comfortable. The staff's smiles were wonderful, and I was delighted with the surprise birthday gift upon departure! The Room had a bath that was fully visible from the road and Facility, so it was a bit disappointing to have to bathe while hiding with the curtain. Also, the Room we stayed in was right above what seemed to be the kitchen? Or maybe it was the noise from the neighboring room, but there was quite a loud noise, which was tough (sweat). Since it's a wooden building, it's unavoidable, but those sensitive to noise should be cautious. It might be good to inform guests in advance. We enjoyed many wonderful private Onsen baths. I felt that having a water server would be very helpful. Since there are limited places to drink water, I got a bit thirsty while in the bath. We were served our meals at a good timing, but two other groups at different tables had to wait quite a while, and they seemed very bored, so it might be unnecessary advice, but improving the timing of serving the dishes would make it even better. I've written quite a few messages, but it was my first time at Shima Onsen, and it was a very lovely stay! If I have the opportunity, I would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

Satisfied with less food
It was a stay plan with a light meal course, but I am very satisfied. I could hear the sound of other guests grilling meat, but that's that. There were three private open-air baths. All of them were excellent for bathing. The staff were also kind and courteous.

Delicious meals and a private open-air bath
This was my second visit to Shima Onsen, and this time I stayed at Kashiwaya, which has high reviews. As expected, the highly-rated cuisine was delicious and the portions were just right, and I enjoyed conversations with the friendly staff. Since there are few rooms, I was able to enjoy the private open-air bath without any congestion. It uses the same system as Kyoritsu Resort, where a lamp indicates when the key is locked. It was conveniently displayed in the library on the first floor as well. The facility and room had a slightly aged feel, but they were lovely, and the young staff seemed to be working hard, which left a good impression.

The bath was only in the room, and although I originally liked the water of Shima Onsen, I was very satisfied. The service upon arrival and the light meal for dinner were also very good. However, breakfast was Japanese-style, and everything was disappointing. It was unusual to have such a change (up and down) in service and meals. It felt like I was in a different property in the morning... It was disappointing.

The cuisine is...
The staff at this property were wonderful, welcoming us with smiles and making our stay comfortable. In particular, I appreciated the smile and thoughtfulness of the female staff member who assisted us at the shop after dinner. The cleaning was thorough, and everything was kept clean. There are three private open-air baths, and although we couldn't use one due to timing, the indoor bath also had a great atmosphere and allowed us to relax. Bath towels were available in various places, so we didn't have to reuse wet ones, which was very nice. However, there were a few disappointing aspects this time, which I hope can be improved. ● We visited during hot weather, but the air conditioning in the lobby was not working, and there were no welcome drinks, making check-in difficult. ● The food did not suit my taste. I understood that there would be no Joshu beef as I booked a light meal, but I was left wondering what the main dish was, and the content was underwhelming. The seasoning, texture, and combination of the dishes were overall unsatisfactory. The salmon Tanba-yaki had a dry topping, which I thought would be better without. The chestnut rice lacked sweetness, had a poor texture, and although it was supposed to be fish simmered in salt, I could only taste ginger, making me wonder if my dish was missing seasoning. The Mont Blanc dessert had soggy sweet potato chips and a sponge soaked in something other than liqueur, which made me feel unwell. The breakfast steamed vegetables looked like scraps, and despite being a Western meal, it came with ponzu sauce, and the coffee in the pot was cold. Other reviews are not bad, so maybe it was just a coincidence. ● The dining area was the same for both dinner and breakfast, but while it was fine at night, it was dark and closed off in the morning with the lights dimmed and the shoji screens closed. Others seemed to feel the same, as someone by the window opened the shoji, but a staff member closed it immediately after they left, so there might be a reason for not opening it. It would have been nice to have breakfast in a brighter setting. It was truly a great property with a wonderful atmosphere, and the efforts and ingenuity of the staff were evident, so it was unfortunate that the food was the only disappointing aspect.

The staff's service is pleasant.
The staff's smiles made for a very pleasant service. There were also new staff members, but they were making a commendable effort. The lounge, though small, had a profound design, and drinking coffee while listening to the river's murmur, the pendulum clock's ticking, and the sound of crickets was truly exceptional, allowing for a calm experience. The entire facility was generally clean and overall good, but a disappointing point was finding about three long hairs under the cushion, under the chair, and between the futon in the Room. At first, I thought they might have fallen during cleaning, but since I found more, I felt the cleaning might not have been thorough enough...? Dinner with the children's menu made the kids very happy, but breakfast was the same as the adults, and there wasn't much they could eat, so they ended up only eating rice. I hope a children's menu can be provided for breakfast as well. Despite some disappointing points, the service centered around the staff was very good, so I would like to use it again when visiting the Shima area.
