It was amazing!
This was a wonderful Accommodation that made my first trip to Niigata truly special. While the building and furnishings showed their age, there were programs where we could enjoy local culture, such as shamisen performances and readings about the snow country, and thoughtful amenities like sake lees face packs, Japanese sake, and coffee, making it an Accommodation where we could fully enjoy Yuzawa. All of the staff, as well as the shamisen instructor, were outstanding. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

The hot water was excellent.
We wanted to relax, so we made a Reservation for a Room with a semi-open-air bath. In the end, on the first day we spent a long time enjoying the large public bath, then took quick dips in the in-room bath before dinner and again before bed. The next day, we woke up with an early-morning soak in the in-room bath, went to the large public bath afterward, and even visited it again before check-in. The silky-smooth water felt absolutely wonderful. On check-in day, we arrived before noon and left our luggage, and everything was very smooth. When we mentioned taking the ropeway on the spot, they also gave us discount tickets. The gentleman at the front desk handled everything quickly and efficiently, yet with a warm hospitality rather than a purely businesslike manner—our expectations rose from the very start. Since there were two of us who drink quite a bit, we brought Champagne for dinner after agreeing to pay a corkage fee. However, after bathing there were about five types of sake set out as welcome drinks; perhaps because our Room was nice, all drinks in the refrigerator were also complimentary (there were four bottled beers and one sparkling sake). In addition, at both dinner and breakfast there was effectively an all-you-can-drink daily selection of local alcohol at the dining area—so bringing our own may not have been necessary. (Though it was nice not to be limited to sake.) Many of the service staff were from overseas, but there were no issues. If I had to mention one thing: after my morning bath on the first-floor lounge area (the spot with the water server), I passed one staff member who didn’t say anything. A simple “Good morning” would have made it feel even better. I’ve never stayed at an Accommodation where I soaked this much—in hot spring water and in sake. It suddenly turned hot during our stay, but hydrangeas were still blooming around town and were also displayed in our Room; touches like that really showed their hospitality. The air conditioner in our Room was slightly noisy.

It was a wonderful Accommodation.
I stayed here on a solo trip. It was the rainy season and there was an unfortunate light drizzle, but when I got off the Shinkansen and called from the station, they came to pick me up almost immediately. When I arrived, they even welcomed me with a large umbrella opened for me. The building has a well-worn charm with touches of the Showa era throughout, but it has been renovated appropriately and there were no issues at all. When I entered my Room, I could look down from the window at the Joetsu Shinkansen line and the Kan-Etsu Expressway sweeping down in a large S-curve from the Naeba area, with a fine view stretching out over the mountain range along the Joetsu border. It was truly soothing to take in. The large public bath isn’t huge indoors, but the slightly silky water is wonderful and kept at just the right temperature—you can soak again and again. The men’s open-air bath has a unique view looking down toward Gala Yuzawa Station nearby, and it was a little cooler than the indoor bath (the temperature seems to vary by season). The lounge after bathing offers an excellent selection of free drinks, plus an extensive library collection, making it very comfortable to spend quiet time there. For dinner I chose the “shabu-shabu kaiseki,” and it was extremely filling—there was enough meat that you could easily call it two portions. I ended up so full that I skipped both rice and miso soup. Breakfast is buffet-style with more than enough variety. There seemed to be fewer local specialties than I expected. After checkout they also drove me back to the station; even though I was alone in their wagon vehicle, everyone kindly saw me off, which made me feel truly grateful (and almost apologetic for taking such attentive care). Every member of staff treated me exceptionally well without exception. The only minor drawback is that the men’s bath area—including the open-air bath—faces the parking lot, so during check-in/out times when guests come and go by car it can feel a bit less relaxing, but even considering that, this is an Accommodation I would gladly visit again.

The best hot spring water in Yuzawa.
They have a strong track record of past stays, and the hospitality service was excellent. The bath water is among the best in Yuzawa. While the Facility is old, it has a sense of history and is a very good Ryokan. I would like to stay again if I have the opportunity.

An Accommodation You’ll Want to Return To
This was my third stay. I stayed in a Room with a great view. This time it was just one night, but with the ski season over, the Accommodation was quiet and I was able to truly relax. I checked in early and went straight to the large public bath. The semi-open-air bath is pleasantly warm rather than hot, so I could take my time and enjoy a long soak all to myself—absolutely wonderful. It’s a personal favorite. The location is convenient, and although it’s a historic older Accommodation, everything is kept spotless and beautifully maintained throughout. Most notably, the Onsen water is nothing short of miraculous—100% free-flowing directly from the source. The temperature and quality are excellent. All of the staff are friendly without being intrusive—just the right distance—so I can spend my time freely as I like. It’s simply comfortable. Honestly, it makes me want to visit every week: “great water,” “great Accommodation,” and “great service.” I love Onsen and travel two or three times a month, but places like Takahan—with fully free-flowing source water at an ideal temperature, abundant volume, and careful management that shows real respect for the water—are truly rare. Usually you have to go deep into remote mountains to find Onsen like this. Takahan is a precious Accommodation that offers authentic Onsen so easily accessible. Thank you very much. I’ll be back again soon. This may be an unreasonable request, but I’d be happy if there were simple therapeutic-style meals like one soup and three dishes—it feels like it would Clear both mind and body… though I did end up enjoying some sake as well.

We stayed for a Multiple Night Stay and changed Rooms. As always, the staff were kind, provided Shuttle Service to the ski resort, and we were able to relax and enjoy the Onsen. For dinner, the Niigata Wagyu was so delicious it melted in our mouths. Hakkaisan and Kakuryu were available to drink for free, but we ordered red wine. The other dishes were a mix of Japanese and Western cuisine, all very tasty and satisfying. It is a wonderful Ryokan with a calm, charming atmosphere.

They provide Shuttle Service to the ski resort, and after skiing you can soothe your tired body in the Onsen and feel refreshed with silky-smooth skin. Dinner is absolutely delicious, and starting with the Onsen again the next morning, you’ll be energized by a breakfast with a wide variety of dishes before they take you back to the ski resort. In any case, the food is wonderful and everyone here is so kind, so you’ll be glad you stayed. We would love to stay again.

After skiing on a sunny day, I relaxed in the Onsen and felt wonderfully refreshed. Dinner was excellent, and we enjoyed it with complimentary sake. Breakfast was a tasty, energizing buffet. This is a clean Ryokan where you can stay with peace of mind. They also provided Shuttle Service from the Ryokan to Gala Yuzawa Ski Resort. Everyone was very kind and helpful, and I truly appreciate it. I would love to stay again.

The Onsen was excellent.
Although there was heavy snowfall, we were able to relax in the Onsen after skiing. After that, we really enjoyed dinner with delicious food and complimentary drinks. In the morning it was snowing again, but breakfast had a great variety—from calcium-rich dishes to curry, eggs, salads, and more—so we were completely full. We were then taken to the ski resort by Shuttle Service, and after skiing we came down with snacks like potatoes for lunch (lol). There are many international guests as well, but everyone here is very kind and helpful. Thank you very much for all your support during our stay. We hope to visit again.

Carefully Preserved
The closest snow country experience from Tokyo was truly delightful. As planned, we enjoyed the contrast between sunny skies and a white snowy world. The American couple accompanying us were genuinely thrilled. This modernized yet traditional long-established Ryokan was exceptional. The display of Yasunari Kawabata's room, the extensive library collection, and the movie "Snow Country" were all remarkable. The flowing Onsen was beyond words in its excellence. It’s wonderful to see how trainees are supporting the operations here. Although their training period is understandably short, providing a bit more explanation about the dishes and guidance on how to enjoy them would enhance the experience even further. I look forward to visiting again!

This year's first ski accommodation
It may not be a luxurious Hotel, but it has become a favorite of ours with its warm hospitality, skin-smoothing Onsen, and delicious meals that make us feel at home. We look forward to your continued support.

Thank you very much.
This was our third stay at Takahan. The wonderful hospitality, attentive service, delicious meals, back-friendly mattresses, table tennis table that satisfied our sons, and New Year’s events were all truly exceptional. However, one point to mention is that our dinner at Hakkai started at 6 PM. Since there were no other guests dining at the same time, the stove in the Room was turned on only after we arrived. As a result, the Room was quite cold initially and we couldn’t fully enjoy the delicious meal for a while. After informing them about this issue, they promptly brought an additional stove for us. It would have been appreciated if the dining area had been pre-heated in advance to avoid such discomfort. Nonetheless, their excellent service made up for it and we would love to stay again in the future. Thank you very much!

The Onsen was excellent, but the meals were completely unsatisfactory.
The Onsen was absolutely wonderful. However, the meals were extremely disappointing, possibly due to the New Year holiday season. On the first day, the meal did not follow the menu provided, and there were delays in serving food despite staff chatting with foreign guests about renting snowboards in the hallway. On the second day, rice was served cold, and a sukiyaki-style hot pot was brought out without a lid or proper heating; as a result, only parts of the meat were overcooked while others remained undercooked—something even an amateur would avoid. For such high accommodation fees during New Year's holidays, this level of dining experience is unacceptable. After waiting for rice for a long time following their promise to bring it soon, we were asked if we wanted dessert instead. When we mentioned that our rice had not arrived yet, they quickly brought it—but it was cold. Upon pointing this out to them again later on when fresh warm rice finally came from their cooker (which seemed broken), they casually mentioned its malfunctioning state without any apology for serving cold food earlier—a completely unprofessional response towards paying customers like us! While both Onsen facilities themselves & owner interactions felt genuinely pleasant overall—the poor service quality displayed by certain employees ultimately ruined chances we'd consider returning here again anytime soon unfortunately... Truly disappointing experience overall!

The building and facilities are undeniably old, but everything else, including the hospitality, Onsen, meals, guest rooms, and service, is impeccable. I would love to stay here again.

For therapeutic hot spring stays
I visited for a solo trip during the off-season before the ski season, calling it a healing retreat. It was truly special to enjoy the natural flow Onsen. Thank you for accommodating solo travelers. This accommodation has historical significance as it is associated with Yasunari Kawabata, offering a retro and traditional atmosphere. However, the washroom and toilet in my room were newly renovated with modern facilities, making my stay very comfortable and pleasant. I was extremely satisfied—thank you. The bath gave an impression of "lukewarm water." As it gets colder, I believe it will be heated more, but personally, I enjoyed soaking in this temperature range for a long time. The large public bath was almost exclusively mine to use—I felt so relaxed! I visit various types of hotels and accommodations about twice a month, but what stood out most here was their thorough infection control measures. Even though the COVID-19 pandemic has ended, they continue these practices diligently—it left me with a positive impression. I felt their commitment to doing everything they can as an accommodation (just my personal feeling!). The TV remote and air conditioner controller in the room were covered with antibacterial film that is replaced each time—a thoughtful detail that impressed me. The cleaning was impeccable; there wasn’t any trash or dust visible anywhere. The baths are drained daily for cleaning—I deeply respect this level of care! This kind of accommodation deserves to be cherished. As for meals, while there weren’t any iconic dishes per se, they offered local ingredients and regional cuisine thoughtfully prepared—it was enjoyable! Especially the gently seasoned simmered dishes were delicious. Apologies for not being able to finish everything due to my small appetite. Oh! The sake lees facial pack had quite a strong smell but even worked wonders on older skin like mine—my face became so soft! Maybe I'll try making one at home too—such thoughtful services made me happy. This accommodation is attractive not only for Yasunari Kawabata fans but also satisfying enough just as an Onsen fan’s retreat—thank you very much! Lastly—and importantly—the accessibility is excellent which earns high points from me! Good accommodations with natural flow Onsens are often far away or take over an hour from the nearest station—but here it's just 5 minutes by car from the Shinkansen station! Plus if you call from the station they'll come pick you up by car. I’ll definitely visit again—thank you very much!

The accommodation itself is old but well-maintained. The onsen is wonderful. Perhaps because I stayed alone, my seat in the dining area for both breakfast and dinner was near the entrance, which felt a bit unsettling. The room I stayed in had a breathtaking view of distant mountains from the window. I was worried about stink bugs appearing, but thankfully it turned out to be unnecessary concern. On the second floor, there is an exhibition space (literary materials room) where I saw writings by Kitahara Hakushu and was amazed at his excellent penmanship. This is an accommodation I'd love to stay at again just to soak in that onsen.

Satisfaction
I visit Niigata every year, and this was my second stay following last year. This time, I chose a Room with low single-sized twin beds. The pillows were small but not an issue. The Room is not brand new but well-maintained and comfortable for the stay. The bath area is spacious, featuring a sauna and open-air bath, perfect for long soaks. As someone who finds hot water challenging, the 42°C natural spring water was ideal for me. The staff were kind and provided natural and pleasant service. As for the meals, I must say they were delicious. While not made with luxurious ingredients, each dish was simple yet flavorful, leaving me highly satisfied—one of the reasons I returned. I look forward to visiting again!

It was a wonderful Ryokan.
Thank you for the wonderful experience. The Ryokan, Onsen, and cuisine were all exceptional, but above all, the staff's hospitality was truly outstanding. They always paused to bow when greeting us, and their manners and language were impeccable. Breakfast featured local traditional dishes that were gentle on the stomach and absolutely delicious. Although it was a buffet style, instead of large quantities being displayed, there were neatly arranged small plates with items like mentaiko and squid somen, which gave a very clean impression. Despite being busy during meal times, the staff maintained a calm demeanor and allowed us to enjoy our meals at a relaxed pace. This has become one of the Ryokans I would love to stay at again. Thank you very much.

The meals were very delicious! The Onsen seemed to have lukewarm water. The quality of the spring seemed good, but it was a bit cold, so I couldn't bring myself to enter multiple times, which was the only disappointment.

This time, I visited with my daughters and grandchildren, and the 7-month-old baby experienced Onsen for the first time. She comfortably joined us in the open-air bath and became one of the ladies. (laughs) We stayed for two nights and three days; on the first night, we enjoyed dinner in our Room, which was delightful. On the second night, there were four adults, one child, and a baby enjoying dinner in a very cozy Room. I truly appreciate the thoughtful hospitality of the Ryokan staff. Looking forward to visiting again!

Showa Retro Cost-Effective Accommodation
The moment we entered the accommodation, we were greeted by a chandelier reminiscent of the bubble era, which made us go "Wow!" However, the rest of the place had a very calm and nostalgic Showa retro atmosphere. The onsen was exactly as reputed, with clear water that could even be drunk (this is very important) flowing abundantly into the bath, leaving our skin feeling smooth and hydrated. As for meals, to be honest, we didn’t have high expectations initially. But each dish turned out to be astonishingly delicious and left us completely satisfied. The quality of the sashimi was outstanding, and its quantity was surprising... Wait? Is this really for one person? Not for three? From butterbur sprout potage to chawanmushi and soba noodles—every single item made us exclaim “Delicious! So happy!” There was also an all-you-can-drink option featuring high-quality sake that sake lovers would adore. Despite being such an amazing accommodation, it came at an unbelievably affordable price that left our entire family delighted. It has now been officially designated as our regular spot! Of course, all staff members were incredibly kind and welcoming. At night, we were moved by live Tsugaru shamisen performances—a series of unforgettable experiences throughout our stay. Even my father—who is usually quite critical about accommodations—remarked how great both the onsen water and meals were. While luxurious ryokan are wonderful too, this place stood out with its slightly aged building but exceptional hot springs and cuisine that left a lasting impression on us. We can’t wait to visit again soon! Thank you so much for everything during our stay—it was truly appreciated!

The view outside the window was mesmerizing, with snow beautifully covering the roof in March. The room was spacious, and I enjoyed a relaxing soak in the Onsen. The building feels a bit old, but it was clean, the service was friendly, and it was very comfortable. The free services inside the facility were also a pleasant surprise. The Room was of a bed type, but it was convenient and comfortable. The pillows were a bit small though, lol. The meals weren't luxurious, but each simple dish was tasty. The free self-service drinks (including alcohol) were also a nice touch.

"Snow Country" Experience
The historic Ryokan where Yasunari Kawabata wrote "Snow Country" and which served as its setting. Located near the hot spring source, it boasts excellent water quality. You can also tour the relocated writing and filming locations. In the evening, enjoy watching Keiko Kishi's "Snow Country" and fall asleep while immersed in the world of "Snow Country." Relax in the morning bath and enjoy breakfast. A one-night, two-day stay was more than enough to fully enjoy the experience.

Thank you for your hospitality.
Since my friend lives in Niigata, we decided to meet halfway and visited Yuzawa. Upon entering the facility, I was first surprised by the variety of books available. The scent of the books was soothing. We were also served freshly harvested Koshihikari rice for dinner, which was delicious. Additionally, the staff's explanations of the facility and their thoughtful gestures during meals truly helped heal my weary body and mind, and I can only express my gratitude. My friend and I were discussing, and we would love to visit again next year. Thank you very much. We look forward to seeing you again.
