    A Rare Experience

    You can stay in the former Soma family’s kura storehouse, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. It was an amazing experience. Since we usually live surrounded by excessive information and stimulation, being in a room with no TV or clock makes time feel like it flows more slowly. The location is also perfect as a base for sightseeing. Having the staff show us around the former Soma family’s main house was full of surprises and really enjoyable. We also visited the recommended local food spots and were very satisfied. Thank you very much.

    Beyond expectations

    I’ve always loved historic buildings and had been looking forward to this for a long time, but it turned out to be an incredible stay that far exceeded my expectations. The property is divided into a nationally designated Important Cultural Property section and a Hotel wing, and we first checked in inside the cultural property. Inside, it’s one highlight after another for anyone who loves old architecture. It’s not simply traditional Japanese design—there are shoin-style tatami rooms and Western decorative elements throughout, and I was captivated by the luxurious blend of Japanese and Western styles that evokes what Hakodate must have been like back then. Above all, thanks to the carefully guided in-house tour by the staff, I was able to learn much more deeply about the building’s history and hidden details, discovering charms you’d never notice if you were only staying overnight. Walking down the corridors feels strangely like stepping back in time. The view of Hakodate Bay through Taisho-era glass—enhanced by the distinctive distortions of old panes—was truly timeless. The Room we stayed in, “Hi,” was exceptionally spacious and beautifully appointed, with excellent amenities and drinks. Most impressive of all was the breathtaking view that hits you the moment you step inside—the scenery from the large window overlooking all of Hakodate Bay was absolutely spectacular. According to the staff, there are fireworks in Hakodate throughout all four seasons. Just imagining having them all to myself from this prime seat made me feel I simply have to come back. The warm hospitality from everyone on staff—who clearly cherish this building’s history and work to preserve and share it—made this a special trip I’ll never forget.

    A luxurious getaway at a stylish heritage Hotel with stunning views of the port town.

    As always, I spend most of my days focused on work, so I travel to unwind. While searching for a Hotel this time, this one immediately caught my eye. I was instinctively drawn to the photos, and although it was quite a bit more expensive than the Hotels I usually stay at, I decided to go for it and made a Reservation. I took a bus from the airport and started with fresh seafood at the market—such a treat you can’t really get in the city. Compared with Tokyo, which had already started warming up, Hakodate was still cool. It was lovely to stroll through the old town at an easy pace while feeling the occasional chilly breeze. As I walked, I ended up at the Former Soma Residence, which has an overwhelming presence. At check-in, they introduced the building to me. Since I was curious about how it became a cultural property, I asked about its history and the staff explained everything very carefully. You could really tell from their expression how much they love both the building and the town—it felt wonderful. When we entered our Room, it was surprisingly stylish and Western in contrast to the exterior (with some Japanese-style Rooms as well). Above all, the view from our window overlooking the port town was incredible—we high-fived each other because we were so glad we chose this Room. The natural light was perfect too. Dinner wasn’t included at this Hotel, so at check-in they recommended a jingisukan restaurant called “Iidaya.” We enjoyed Hokkaido’s Sapporo Classic beer and fresh lamb—an absolute reward. For breakfast, we took our time with bread and yogurt that really felt like Hokkaido. It was such a nice chance to slow down and feel time pass gently. To finish off, we finally visited Goryokaku—the place we missed last time. This was my second trip to Hakodate; last time I stayed near Hakodate Station, so choosing a different location this time turned out to be another great decision. Spending quiet time in such a refined space helped me truly recharge on this trip as well.

    A One-of-a-Kind Experience

    This was an exceptionally meaningful stay—one that let us truly connect with the residence’s commitment to preserving a cultural property and passing it on to future generations. [What we loved] - A special, guests-only experience After the public viewing hours ended, there was an in-house tour available only to overnight guests. We were able to learn in depth about the residence’s history and design details. Being able to enjoy a cultural property in an almost private setting is a luxury unique to this Accommodation. - Attentive concierge service With only three Rooms, the warm and thoughtful care made a real difference. When we hadn’t decided on dinner for the first night, they recommended “La Concha,” which was excellent—and they smoothly arranged the Reservation for us as well. We also appreciated how they even noted our plans for the next day (a sushi restaurant visit) and proactively asked, “Shall we arrange a taxi?” The service consistently stayed one step ahead, which truly impressed us. - An outstanding location It is located right near the famous “Hachimanzaka” slope. Being able to take photos early in the morning on a quiet street with no tourists felt like a privilege that came from staying here. [Points to note] - Inconveniences inherent to a cultural property Because great care is taken to respect the building’s history, it is not barrier-free. Combined with the hilly area, there were moments that were challenging for my elderly mother with weaker legs. We also noticed some chilliness in our Room due to insulation limitations, and occasionally saw insects such as spiders. - Value for money The Accommodation fee may feel high at first glance, but considering it includes the cost of managing and maintaining this historic building, we found it entirely reasonable. [Overall] Unlike modern Hotels with all-new Facilities, this place offers something different: staying as part of its story while also supporting its preservation. For anyone who values that kind of experience—and can even embrace minor inconveniences as part of what makes staying in a cultural property special—this is hard to beat. Overall, we were extremely satisfied with our stay. Thank you very much.

    A one-of-a-kind experience: stay overnight in a designated Important Cultural Property.

    Staying at the Former Soma Residence, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, was a truly one-of-a-kind experience. I’ve visited Hakodate many times and knew of the Former Soma Residence, but just knowing I could stay there made my excitement grow. In reality, it was even better than I had hoped or imagined. As a Japanese-Western eclectic wooden building built over 100 years ago, the architecture itself is full of highlights. After public visiting hours end, it becomes time exclusively for overnight guests, so I was grateful to be able to take my time and appreciate even the smallest details (and I’m very thankful for the staff’s thoughtful guidance). Being able to enjoy drinks while taking in the night view in such a historic setting felt genuinely luxurious. I stayed in Room 1 (Port View Suite). The spacious Room has been comfortably renovated and offers an unbeatable location with panoramic harbor views (the night view is beautiful too!). Simply relaxing in the Room while admiring scenery that looked like a painting made for an incredibly fulfilling stay. Since there are no cooking facilities on-site (understandable for a wooden Important Cultural Property), dinner needs to be enjoyed at restaurants outside. But Hakodate has plenty of excellent places featuring local ingredients, so it wasn’t an issue at all. Strolling through town to find something delicious and then walking back through the quiet streets at night was another wonderful part of the experience. For breakfast, a basket with bread, warm potage soup, yogurt, and more is delivered—enjoying it slowly on the sofa while looking out at the view is exceptional. And because it’s located in Motomachi, Hakodate, it’s also a pleasure to wake up early and wander through peaceful streets. Rather than simply visiting as a tourist, this Accommodation felt like one of the best choices for experiencing Hakodate’s history—and the culture shaped by that history.

    A truly rare opportunity to experience authentic heritage firsthand!

    I stayed in the storehouse of the Former Soma Residence, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property—this storehouse is also an Important Cultural Property. After arriving on site and feeling excited by the dignified exterior, I was first shown to the main house. After check-in, I was given a guided tour of the Former Soma Residence. Through Hakodate’s history, I learned about the residence itself, the owner’s dedication to its architectural style, and their spirit of hospitality. It made me realize that the storehouse where I would be staying was not just a Room, but a special space where you can feel over 100 years of history—my anticipation grew even more! The moment I stepped into the storehouse, it felt as if time flowed differently there… it was such a warm and welcoming space. The second-floor living area is spacious and open, with a large sofa perfect for relaxing, and views of Mt. Hakodate from the window. The first-floor bedroom features a Hakodate-style blend of Japanese and Western design and is very comfortable. The bathroom area is also spacious and highly functional. Since it’s a large storehouse, I worried it might be cold due to the season—but that concern proved unfounded. The entire Room was comfortably heated, so I stayed warm and cozy from late night through morning. Warm-toned lighting brightened the interior just enough, and the wood-accented furnishings were soothing. With its historical value as well, it was a rare opportunity in life—a truly special and heartwarming stay. Highly recommended!!

    An extraordinary escape you won’t find anywhere else—a truly luxurious getaway.

    A Hotel opened by repurposing the residence of a prominent local family in this area. I stayed with high expectations about what it would be like, and the experience exceeded my imagination. Check-in takes place in the main house, which has been designated as a cultural property. From the moment I stepped into that space, it felt as if I had time-traveled 100 years back. The check-in area is said to be where the head of the household once actually welcomed guests. As we were guided along in line with the story, my excitement kept building. The sweets and basil tea served at that time were truly delicious—I even bought some for myself. The lounge is like a grand hall; while looking out over the beautifully maintained garden from that era, we were served an original mocktail. Then, as evening approached, we joined a special tour guided by staff through the building. What initially felt simply “impressive” became far more meaningful once each detail was explained, and I could appreciate this place’s value even more. This tour is included in the Plan service, and I think you’ll enjoy your stay more if you join. Also, since it happened to be just us that day, it truly felt like a luxurious private stay in a cultural property. For dinner, we went down to the bay area within walking distance and enjoyed ourselves there. It’s a style where meals are not included—now quite common—but there are plenty of places nearby so it wasn’t inconvenient at all, and we could stroll around town freely. (If you ask, the staff kindly share all kinds of helpful information about the area!) Our Room was a port-view option I’d been curious about after seeing photos. Depending on the time of day, the scenery through the large window changed like a painting—and enjoying coffee on the spacious sofa while watching it was pure luxury. It’s an Accommodation I can confidently recommend to anyone who wants to cherish their time at the Hotel as much as their time out exploring. Next time, I’d love to stay in one of their cultural-property Rooms created from an old storehouse.
