This is a Ryokan offering meals.

We stayed in Room 101 with an open-air bath. Perhaps because it is set apart from the other rooms, it was truly quiet. As it’s located at the very back of Sengokuhara, it has a real secluded, stay-in feel. The room was spacious, and even with two double beds there was plenty of space. Because it’s a small Accommodation, the large public bath isn’t especially impressive, but the in-room bath was excellent, so we were very satisfied. We took our time over dinner for about two hours. Both the portion size and presentation were just right—perfect for us as light eaters. Since you can’t easily go out to shop nearby, it might be nice if the free drinks in the in-room refrigerator were a bit more substantial. What puzzled me was the older male staff members’ service style. They come across as sincere and likable, but they also felt somewhat inexperienced—to the point that we almost felt we had to be considerate toward them. As this Accommodation newly opened at the end of last year, they may be new to hospitality work. I found myself worrying whether difficult guests might scold them unfairly. The female staff member who appeared during breakfast hours seemed more professional and kept things running smoothly, but she looked like she had a tough job on her hands. I’m looking forward to seeing how much things have changed by our next visit.

An Accommodation you’ll want to return to

With only a few Rooms, it was quiet and very comfortable. The in-Room bath was spacious—large enough for about three adults to bathe comfortably. I liked the in-Room bath more than the public bath and used it many times. The amenities were well stocked, which I think many women will really appreciate. All of the meals were delicious, and the portions were just right—filling without being too much. The staff’s attentiveness was excellent, making this an Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

    Luxury Accommodation

Absolutely Satisfied! What I loved - A spacious property with only seven Rooms. The hallways and lobby were also wide and luxurious, so I could truly relax. - Beautiful furniture! - The in-room bath (Onsen) felt amazing—so good I almost thought a public bath wasn’t even necessary. - Hair dryer, shower head, and all shampoo/toiletries were ReFa. - Air conditioning and air purifier were Daikin. - Koala Mattress bed, Airweave pillows. - Even the tableware (cups) was lovely. - Slippers in large/medium/small sizes; they supported my arches nicely and were very comfortable. - The food was unbelievably good. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent, but especially the chef’s original pesto-style sauce for sashimi at dinner, plus the homemade tofu and rolled omelet at breakfast. I usually don’t like rolled omelets, so even I was surprised by how delicious it was! - I got to see deer. I had Reserved the smallest Room, but since other Rooms became available they upgraded me. I was really happy. If possible, I’d love to see a few more welcome drink options. The tea selection was great, but I’m not a fan of rooibos or guava tea, so it would be nice to have something like regular iced tea as well. An Accommodation where you can truly unwind in your Room. I’d love to come again.

Fulfilled by Onsen and delicious meals

Last year, I stayed one night at the sister property, Annex Tateshina Kunpu. The meals and service were excellent, so I decided to stay here this time. This time, the Onsen and the comfort of the bed were also wonderful. The meals were visually enjoyable as well, expressing the season of fresh greenery and new leaves. The male staff member who served us was natural and pleasant. Both my stomach and my heart felt full. The Room had both an indoor Onsen bath and an open-air bath; both were spacious and felt luxurious. The water temperature was just right and very relaxing, so I ended up soaking many times. Because the bed and pillow suited me well, I slept very soundly and felt refreshed. Overall I was very satisfied with the basics, but it would have been even better if satellite channels were available, or if there had been a bathrobe, samue loungewear, or sweets in the Room.

The refreshing early-summer breeze feels wonderful.

Opening the window, a pleasant breeze flowed through the trees and helped me relax. The food was excellent. The only issue was that the Onsen water temperature was too hot. There may have been a way to adjust it, but I couldn’t figure it out, so I used the shower to cool it to a comfortable temperature before getting in.

    The meals are excellent!

We were able to stay at a good price. All the staff were kind, but not particularly polished—more of a friendly vibe. I didn’t feel uncomfortable, but with some people it felt a bit amateur. At meals, for example, they would open the door to the private dining room and then say “Excuse me,” or place dishes beside you rather than in front of you, etc. Also, the sleepwear was only one yukata. Only Large and Extra Large were in the Room, and when I asked for Medium they said, “Because it’s Golden Week, we’ve run out of Medium yukata and everyone is wearing Large.” Huh…? This is an Accommodation that normally costs over 100,000 yen for two people—how does that happen? They should be able to estimate quantities from Reservations, and even if laundry can’t keep up there should be some kind of solution. Even if we accept using Large as a compromise, they could at least provide an extra waist tie or something—but there was no such consideration. I’m 162 cm tall and have experience dressing in kimono so I managed by adjusting how I tied it, but not everyone can do that. And the obi sash and padded jacket felt cheap and synthetic as a cost-cutting measure—this isn’t supposed to be a budget Ryokan… I also saw Reviews saying the amenities were luxurious. The quality was indeed good (plastic-free products that seem expensive per item), but there were no amenities at all in the large public bath. That’s extremely rare for a Ryokan. Of course you also have to bring towels from your Room. I understand minimizing waste as much as possible, but wouldn’t it be fine to at least have a water dispenser? I’ve been harsh here, but every meal was delicious. The attention to detail was strong; both quality and flavor were outstanding—and clearly high-end. Maybe they focus everything on food. The two of us were completely satisfied; breakfast and dinner made us genuinely happy. However—another disappointing moment even there. When I told one of the female staff members how good it was, she happily thanked me while saying how much care the head chef puts into everything—from plating to atmosphere—but then added that he takes afternoons off. Was that necessary to mention? There are two other chefs so it’s probably fine; it really did taste great; I understand everyone needs time off. Still, hearing he wasn’t there during our meal made it feel like we drew the short straw somehow. Oh—and the bedding was excellent too. I’d go back just for that amazing food. If you judge only by the meals it feels worth the price, but considering everything overall… I’m not so sure.

    Satisfied

At first, I made a Reservation because I was drawn to the in-room bath. After staying, not only was the bath wonderful, but the Room also felt very comfortable thanks to thoughtful amenities and equipment such as individually adjustable air conditioning and extension cords. Above all, the wide variety of dishes and their beautiful presentation were outstanding, making for a truly satisfying stay.

Relax and unwind. An Accommodation where you can enjoy your time at the Accommodation.

Everything was very clean, the staff were friendly, and both the meals and the baths were great. With simple but sufficient Facilities, we could enjoy our time at the Accommodation in a relaxed way. Highly recommended if you want to unwind and do nothing. There are no vending machines, but free beer and water were provided in the refrigerator for each guest. The drink bar closes at 11:00 PM, so I was only slightly concerned about having enough to drink later at night.

    We had a relaxing stay.

With only a small number of Rooms, the staff were very attentive, and the Room was spacious, so we were able to relax completely. The dining area was made up of private rooms, so we didn’t have to share with other guests and could dine in our in-house wear. There was so much food that we couldn’t finish it all. Since dinner and breakfast were mainly Japanese-style, I wished there had been an option for a Western-style breakfast as well. The shampoo and other amenities were high quality, and the hair dryer and shower head were ReFa (in the Room only). The bath in the Room was very pleasant. The drink bar next to the lobby was well stocked, but it felt like many of the cold drinks were quite similar. There is a large public bath and a smaller one, with men’s/women’s use switching by time slot; however, since they aren’t very large, I think it would be nice to offer them as reservable private baths by time slot instead. It’s in a quiet location, and our family was able to spend a relaxing time together. We were told that autumn foliage season is especially nice here, so we’d love to visit again then.

The in-room semi-open-air bath is spacious.

I was able to relax very slowly in the Room. Thank you. Each dish felt carefully prepared, and I truly enjoyed the meals. However, I didn’t understand how to turn the Room air conditioning on and off, so I wish I had asked more clearly when I was shown the Room. (It was cold while sleeping—I realized the air conditioner wasn’t on.) The semi-open-air bath was very spacious, and the water quality seemed excellent. My skin felt smooth after bathing. When sightseeing around Lake Ashi, the staff kindly assisted me with great care. Thank you very much.

    My husband and I sta...

My husband and I stayed here to celebrate my birthday. As soon as we arrived, the staff offered congratulatory words, and their thorough explanations and dedicated service left a great impression. They also upgraded our Room, and even during the meal they kindly helped us celebrate. The Room was spotlessly cleaned; the bed had a Koala mattress, and one of the pillows was an Airweave pillow, so we rested very comfortably. The in-room bathtub was spacious, the Onsen water temperature was just right, and although the showerhead was a ReFa model, it was much larger than typical home versions with great water pressure. In addition, it was very convenient to have space at the sink area to place our own items, as well as storage space in the changing area. If possible, I think samue loungewear instead of yukata would be even more comfortable. The meals were served with excellent timing; everything was delicious and beautifully presented, and we left completely satisfied. Thank you for seeing us off so warmly. We will be back.

A Wonderful Ryokan Revived Through Renovation

This Ryokan, which opened at the end of last year after renovating a building that had previously been a different Accommodation, has been beautifully refurbished despite having sat unused for seven years. The interior design—including solid-wood tables—was wonderful, and I was able to truly relax. The cuisine was outstanding: not only were the chef’s carefully chosen dishes beautiful, but the decorative cuts and presentation were also elegant, and everything tasted excellent. Drinks at dinner were also very reasonably priced. Hot dishes were served in pre-warmed tableware, and not only the Room but also the lobby drink corner had an impressive selection—thoughtful touches throughout. In particular, the amenities are among the best I’ve experienced, even compared with various five-star Hotels I’ve stayed at before. I had read in a Review that there were no welcome sweets, but Hakone rusks were provided this time; I enjoyed them with a drink. It felt like they are making improvements based on Reviews. All staff members who assisted us were very pleasant, and when we left they even came out to see us off at the entrance, which I truly appreciated. I also thought it was lovely to hear how politely (presumably) the manager spoke when addressing (presumably) a female subordinate. As for bathing: every Room is equipped with an Onsen bath—either semi-open-air or open-air—and in addition there are both a small bath and a large public bath that alternate between men and women. They are available only in the afternoon but can be used without Reservation. The bath area interior uses what seems to be sandstone—a tasteful material with good drainage—but perhaps because it can peel like mica, small fragments may sometimes collect in the tub; some guests might mistake them for tile pieces. It’s soft on the skin and a very nice material overall, though it may scratch easily as well, which likely makes cleaning difficult. Since it has only recently opened, items like wash buckets are still new and felt pleasant to use; however, as others have mentioned too, the biggest issue is likely the chlorine smell. I understand this may be required by health regulations and that true free-flowing hot spring water can be difficult here; still, while overall satisfaction is currently quite high thanks to an opening special rate offering great value for money, if prices return to normal later on—even in Hakone where Ryokan rates tend to be high—I worry it could feel challenging as-is precisely because everything else is so good. I hope they continue to do their best while making full use of their wonderful setting and hospitality.

The meals are excellent, and the property offers a private atmosphere. Please note that access may be difficult during winter when there is heavy snowfall.

With only seven Rooms, I hardly ran into other guests and was able to enjoy a quiet stay. The service is simple, but it’s a good choice if you value privacy. As it has only recently opened, I’ll share some details. [Facility] You take off your shoes at the entrance. There is self-service coffee and tea in the lobby, which was convenient to take back to the Room, though I would have appreciated something like welcome sweets. Note that there is no elevator. [Room] A well-balanced Japanese-Western style Room. There were a few minor issues with fittings (such as the toilet door), but the Room was spacious and comfortable. There is no floor heating, but perhaps because we were on the second floor, it didn’t feel cold. Tabi socks were also provided. While many Accommodations keep lighting dim to create a luxury feel, this Room was very bright, which I liked. All windows have roller blinds. There was a USB-C port with PD by the bedside, which was very useful. On the other hand, there was only one thin pillow, so having feather pillows available would be nice. The in-room fridge had two complimentary beers and two bottles of water; compared with Hotels in a similar price range, it felt a bit limited. Since there are various coffee and tea options, I would have liked more water—such as a 2-liter bottle or additional mineral water. [Bath] The bath in the Room allows you to fully open the window for an open-air feel like an outdoor bath. There was a slight chlorine smell, but bathing while looking at snowy scenery was wonderful. The edge of the tub is quite high, so it may be difficult for women or smaller guests to get in; having a small step stool would help. The size of the bath and water temperature were appropriate. Amenities were sufficient, though an illuminated magnifying mirror for women would be appreciated. [Meals] The meals were delicious. We chose the Standard Plan; it included items such as uni served in its shell and sea bream rice cooked over solid fuel—exactly as shown in the website photos. On the other hand—perhaps because it’s mainly Japanese cuisine—the wine selection felt limited. [Access / Notes] We drove there, but the entrance was hard to find and we passed it once by mistake. This time there was heavy snowfall; we saw many cars getting stuck on both the slope up to the Accommodation and on our way back out. We had studless tires plus 4WD and had no issues ourselves, but even just driving down toward Hakone-Yumoto took nearly two hours due to traffic conditions related to snow accumulation on roads around Hakone-Yumoto Station area (Hakone). If snow is forecasted (snowfall), normal tires will likely not be sufficient—so in winter you’ll need proper equipment (winter tires) and extra time (time allowance).

It might be difficult in Hakone.

There is no signage to the Accommodation, so the entrance is hard to find. At check-in, we were told to help ourselves to the drinks lined up in the lobby—served with paper cups and plastic cups. It was self-service, and there were no small sweets. The water and two cans of beer in the Room were said to be the welcome drinks. When escorting us, a staff member took off their shoes in front of the Room and then walked down the corridor/entry area in socks before entering. This felt unhygienic; they should remove their shoes at the step-up like guests do. The Room door is heavy and closes quickly, yet they went in first without holding it—I got my shoulder caught. The Room smelled musty immediately after entering. The changing area floor and even chair legs were covered with hair—shocking. I borrowed a vacuum cleaner and cleaned it myself, including wiping the floor. It was truly unpleasant and disappointing. The living room door and washroom door overlap when opening/closing, so you can easily bump into them, and there’s no space to lay out a bath mat. There is no floor heating, it’s cold, and there are no slippers, so your feet get very cold. The area around the unnecessarily large toilet space is especially freezing. In IKYU photos there is a roller blind in the bedroom, but in reality there isn’t one. Mornings are glaringly bright, and on midwinter nights cold air comes through so it’s chilly. We were told it wasn’t installed because people can’t see inside from outside—was comfort not considered? With no floor heating or slippers either, my feet stayed cold. The in-room bath has high sides but no handrail or step stool, making it difficult for shorter people to get in. Each time you enter/exit, your thighs rub against the rough stone tub edge and it hurts. Hot water is not continuously supplied; only what has decreased after bathing gets topped up. It’s spacious enough for two adults. However, there was a strong chlorine smell and my skin felt tight after bathing. On our way to the public bath on the same floor, we used a nearby restroom that didn’t even have its lights on—and there were cobwebs. We went to the public bath after 4 pm; even then, the bathing area lights were off. Worst of all: countless bits of debris and broken tile fragments were scattered inside the tub itself, with an intense chlorine smell as well—I rushed out immediately. In the changing room there was no basket for towels (or any amenities such as shower caps or hair ties), nor any place for used towels either. We were told cleaning is done once every three days; beyond cleaning alone, proper repairs are necessary. Meals did not feature any premium ingredients—just standard—and by the time we were shown to our seats، one dish had already been placed on our table which ruined anticipation. Also، dinner start times are limited to only two options: 5:30 pm or 6:00 pm. At checkout there was only one staff member، with no help carrying luggage—just seeing us off at the entrance. Overall، renovation work feels rough و incomplete۔ The oldness و grime stand out۔ Worse than that، cleaning has clearly not been done properly، และ with too few employees everyone seemed inexperienced. This Accommodation is far from ready to accept guests yet. I’m sorry, but I could not find any good points at all۔
