    Flawless

While I still haven’t settled on a regular nearby Accommodation, this was my second stay here. It was excellent last time, so I had high expectations—and they were met with impressive thoroughness. The biggest excitement is the food and wine. I thought it would be even better if there were a sommelier, but I was able to choose a great bottle from the day’s lineup. The food impressed me last time as well, with no shortcuts even for the children’s meals, and this time it was outstanding again. There were no puzzling dishes that threw off the balance—this is the most important point. As always, the open-air bath in the Room was wonderful. The service also struck a good balance between practical efficiency and thoughtful Japanese-style attentiveness, and felt like a well-judged answer to today’s challenges in the tourism industry. I plan to return.

A wonderful Accommodation where you can enjoy a special stay close by.

Located about an hour from Shinjuku and easy to reach, yet once you step inside, a beautiful, nature-filled garden unfolds and makes you forget everyday life in an instant. The Room was also wonderful—said to be a favorite of Hayao Miyazaki—with thoughtful details throughout, from the view from the round in-room bath to the uniquely textured corridors, creating a truly charming atmosphere. From arrival to departure, the staff’s warm hospitality and attentive care made our family feel completely at ease, allowing us to spend a very comfortable and happy time.

    Wonderful Accommodation

We were extremely satisfied with this Accommodation. From check-in to check-out, the staff who took care of us during our stay were professional, and we were truly impressed by the meals. We will definitely return. Thank you very much.

A lovely Accommodation with convenient access from Tokyo.

We stayed at Motoyu Jinya in Tsurumaki Onsen for two nights and three days during the Obon holidays. We made a Reservation for a special Japanese-Western Room with an open-air bath. Thank you for kindly accommodating us despite the last-minute Reservation. The hospitality was exceptionally refined, with most staff demonstrating an extremely high standard of service. Many were genuinely warm and left a lasting impression. I also found it fascinating—whether it comes from the proprietress’s leadership or from loyalty to the company. As for the Room, our satisfaction was very high. It was spacious, and the lush garden view outside the window was distinctive—sure to help you forget everyday stress and noise. Ordering via mobile was quick, and it seemed seamlessly shared among all staff—truly impressive. Regarding amenities, this is simply a matter of personal preference, so my opinion may be in the minority and is not a complaint. The toothbrushes are wooden, which I felt matched this Accommodation’s atmosphere perfectly. However, with a rough brushing style like mine, I felt they could make it harder to brush properly or cause slight irritation on the lips. That said, given how wonderful the overall ambiance is, I assume this warm alternative to plastic toothbrushes was chosen intentionally—so it may not be something a first-time guest should comment on. My apologies. The cuisine was consistently elegant, visually beautiful, delicately seasoned, and delicious—exactly to my taste. Those who prefer stronger flavors may find it less suitable. My family was also very satisfied, and we are grateful for the thoughtful care of the serving staff. To all staff members—the proprietress and head chef included—thank you very much for providing such an outstanding stay. I sincerely hope that this wonderful space and tradition of hospitality will continue for years to come.

    The moment you step ...

The moment you step onto the grounds, the world changes completely. Every view is beautiful, and even just walking through the garden to your Room lifts your spirits—you can feel the Accommodation’s attention to detail and heartfelt hospitality everywhere. The Room was also excellent, and the in-room bath (carefully selected Onsen) was flawless. That said, given the pricing, I felt there could be a bit more consideration for privacy and distance from other guests (especially during meals).

It was the best stay experience.

We received a warm welcome, and throughout our stay the staff provided attentive service at just the right distance—neither too close nor too distant. The Room interior and amenities were excellent, and we were very satisfied!! The meals were also delicious, but since we had made a Reservation for something different from the standard Plan, we would have appreciated an explanation of what was different. (We did receive an explanation that we could choose the rice dish.) We would love to visit again! Thank you very much!!

    Wonderful

Very satisfied. However, I called the front desk and no one answered even after 10 rings. It was Golden Week and they were busy, and it was only to notify them of checkout so it didn’t bother me much, but since I was traveling with my mother who has difficulty walking, it left me a little uneasy in case something happened. That said, the food and service were worthy of a five-star rating.

The ultimate relaxation in a quiet, extraordinary setting.

This was the best-ranked Accommodation we have ever stayed at in every respect. My wife was thrilled by the many Rosanjin ceramic pieces and portraits she is currently fascinated with. The gentle, skin-friendly Onsen with free-flowing natural spring water, the private open-air bath surrounded by nature, and the round in-Room bath were all wonderful. The meals featured seasonal ingredients, with thoughtfully crafted dashi in a variety of ways, and we were very satisfied. Above all, the staff’s warm hospitality made it a truly memorable trip. Since it’s less than an hour’s drive from our home, we plan to stay again.

    Highly recommended!

I highly recommend this Accommodation for its Facility, service, and cuisine. The location doesn’t feel particularly like a typical Onsen area, but it’s as if a charming inn suddenly appears (laugh). The view from the open-air bath in the Room and the garden seen from the dining area are thoughtfully designed so that other buildings are not visible, creating a calm, unhurried atmosphere that’s hard to believe is within walking distance of the nearest station. The staff provided impeccable service, and the meals were perfectly portioned with a wonderful sense of seasonality. With a Japanese maple in the garden, there was beautiful color throughout—the last remaining cherry blossoms, fresh spring greenery, rhododendron blooms, and the red leaves of the maple made for a lovely palette. At checkout, seeing the staff carefully wiping down the windows gave me a sense of how much they value and take care of this Facility together. It’s such a wonderful Accommodation that I’d encourage visiting in every season.

Experience Japanese culture at the finest hot spring accommodation

My spouse and I enjoy shogi and Onsen, and we travel around the whole country staying at Onsen Ryokan. I came with the preconception that this is a “holy place of shogi,” and it is indeed an irresistible Accommodation for shogi fans, but it exceeded expectations in many other ways as well. The garden, cuisine, service, and Facility were all of outstanding quality, allowing us to truly experience the depth of Japanese culture. Many of the staff are young, yet everyone was professional and pleasant, which left a strong impression. This Ryokan has a long history and tradition, yet it is said to have developed an innovative management system. It felt as if Yasuzo Masuda’s spirit of “Shinte Issho” (“new moves for life”) was being brought to life here. We will definitely stay again.

This is an Accommodation I would recommend to everyone.

Staying in the Matsukaze Room, I could feel the history and spend my time in a calm, relaxed mood. However, it was a bit inconvenient that there were no switches in the Room to turn off the lights for each area, so I had to go all the way to the entrance/exit. (They arranged an andon lamp for me, but...) The meals were a good portion size and very delicious. Many works by Rosanjin are on display, and seeing them alone is worth it.

    An Accommodation with Many Stories

I chose this Accommodation on a whim while visiting Samukawa Shrine, without any prior information, but I was surprised by so many things once I arrived. Most of all, I had no idea this is where the Oi title match in shogi is held! I went without knowing that (lol). There were also plenty of highlights, like the collection of tableware by Kitaoji Rosanjin, and it was really enjoyable. The bathtub in the in-Room bath was incredibly large, which was great too. Since it was cold, I soaked in it several times during the night. Dinner was kaiseki with Kanto-style seasoning; everything was delicious and the portions were just right. There were towels provided in the large public bath as well, and I didn’t feel anything was lacking—very comfortable. The garden was carefully maintained; I even saw someone pruning from the morning, and I could really feel the effort put into keeping it in good condition. To be honest, it felt like a hidden gem rather than a well-known Onsen Accommodation, but it’s at a level that deserves to be recognized as a more upscale place. That said, if it becomes too popular, shogi fans might find it harder to visit. I have just one complaint: the food came out far too slowly. Since it’s kaiseki, there were times we waited over 20 minutes between dishes, and that honestly got a bit frustrating.

I treated myself to a birthday getaway and enjoyed a relaxing 2-night, 3-day stay at Kari Kura-an.

Previously, we stayed for one night on short notice and couldn’t choose a Room, but this time— as a birthday gift to myself— I reserved Kari Kurian immediately after our last stay. With a private garden and no one entering the grounds, we were able to relax at our own pace. Our 18-month-old son also had a wonderful time: picking up acorns in the garden, floating leaves down the stream, greeting the koi, and watching birds that flew in—brown-eared bulbuls, Japanese white-eyes, and bull-headed shrikes. For lunch we enjoyed Jinya curry and a miso-grilled Yamato pork rice bowl; both were excellent. Since it was a 2-night/3-day stay, the second day’s meal was significantly upgraded, and they even prepared a birthday plate after noticing the occasion. At dinner our child became fussy; when my wife stepped away first, they kindly re-served her meal warm afterward. We are truly grateful for their consistently outstanding hospitality. The only disappointment this time was that some rude guests from Kansai were loudly shouting late at night in the open-air bath. It was unpleasant to see such poor manners at an Accommodation of this caliber. Of course Jinya cannot choose its guests and is not at fault, but it still left us uncomfortable.

We acknowledge the efforts as a historic and luxurious Ryokan, but...

This was my first time staying here, and overall, it is a satisfying accommodation. The impressive garden, the historical feel of the room, and the private bath in the guest room all provide a relaxing experience that you wouldn't expect from a ryokan located in a residential area. I believe significant efforts are being made to maintain this historic ryokan. On the other hand, there were some aspects that raised questions about its status as a luxury ryokan. One issue was that I didn't feel warmth in the staff's service. While their responses were polite, they felt somewhat mechanical or scripted. The food was decent but not particularly memorable, and although many of the staff members were young, their guidance to seats and timing for serving dishes seemed inconsistent. Additionally, seating at the dining area wasn't pre-assigned and felt more like being at a casual family restaurant. The most confusing aspect was the numerous QR codes placed throughout the facility. You need to scan these codes for almost everything you want to know or do, which means you must always have your smartphone with you. While this might reduce staff workload, it doesn't seem fitting for a luxury ryokan. There weren't any major issues; however, considering the accommodation fee charged here, it's unfortunate but I don't feel inclined to revisit this place again.

A Memory to Last a Lifetime

I stayed one night at the detached Karikura-an. Although I arrived about an hour early, I was warmly welcomed with matcha and sweets, which made me feel at ease. The garden was meticulously maintained, flowers were beautifully arranged everywhere, and many works by Rosanjin were on display, creating a truly extraordinary atmosphere. The meals were exquisitely prepared dishes that I enjoyed while taking in the scenic views outside. The staff provided attentive yet unobtrusive service with great care. The Room had an elegant ambiance; it was quiet and clean, and the open-air bath had perfectly warm water—absolutely wonderful. One unfortunate incident was finding a large insect crawling on the wall of the Room during the night—it startled me but disappeared before I knew it. Although pest control is reportedly conducted monthly... I had long wished to visit this place, so having my dream come true made me genuinely happy!

I stayed for one night on short notice.

Due to a sudden decision to stay for one night, the rooms we wanted (Matsukaze or Karikuruan) were unavailable, so we stayed in Kagari-bi, a room with a private open-air bath on the second floor. On our way to the accommodation, my wife and I wondered if such an extraordinary place could really exist in the middle of a residential area. We joked that maybe it just looked good in photos. However, as soon as we arrived, we were transported into another world—a secluded space reminiscent of the Edo period. Completely cut off from the outside world and enveloped in tranquility, we enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing time. Although this was an impromptu stay and both of our preferred rooms were already booked, we've decided to secure a 2-night/3-day reservation for next time! We look forward to visiting again soon. While I hesitate to mention this because it might lead other guests to misunderstand... We mistakenly thought breakfast started at 7:30 instead of 8:00 due to our hunger and went early. A staff member kindly informed us of the correct time but then offered to start serving earlier since it was in a private dining room—an incredibly accommodating gesture! Additionally, my son tends to interact with staff at various accommodations due to past experiences where he’s been treated kindly by them. Here too, he received warm responses from everyone; even when sitting on one staff member's lap during their explanation about facilities in our room, they showed no sign of discomfort. At dinner time in the dining area, they carefully asked about preferences for my son's meal but unfortunately he left much of his vegetables uneaten that evening. To our surprise though—and reflecting their exceptional hospitality—the next morning’s breakfast was adjusted based on what he had eaten previously! Even details like switching silverware or offering non-alcoholic aperitifs impressed us deeply. There are many more examples I could share (even within just one night!), but space is limited here. As someone who stays nearly 100 nights annually at accommodations costing over ¥100k per night each time—this place ranks among top-tier experiences! One minor downside would be regarding "private open-air baths." While irrelevant for us since our room had its own bath attached—it seems reservations cannot be made beforehand nor is there clarity around cleaning schedules which might result occasionally following consecutive usage by others without breaks between sessions (as happened during ours). For this reason alone—we chose not use them ourselves during this visit

A wonderful accommodation with excellent access from the city center

I stayed for one night in November. The food, Onsen, and service were all excellent. The building and room felt a bit old, but they were well-cleaned and maintained, making the stay very comfortable. The amenities had many Japanese-style items, which I appreciated. However, it was unfortunate that there were steps to access the large public bath and private baths, making it difficult for my companion with mobility issues to use them.

    Courteous service

The Plan I reserved had to be changed suddenly due to my circumstances, but I greatly appreciated the polite response when I contacted in advance. I was also pleased with the attentive service provided on the day of the change. It was a relaxing space where I could slowly enjoy the natural scenery and sounds! The Onsen had just the right temperature, making me want to stay in it forever.

Ise Room: A Newly Renovated and Comfortable Space

Stayed in the renovated and spacious Ise Room Highlights: - The room was spacious, newly renovated, and offered a lovely view of trees from the window. - The private onsen open-air bath attached to the room was exceptional. - The refrigerator had a wide variety of free drinks, and the freezer included ice cream from a local farm. - There were two toilets in the room, which was convenient for our group of four. - Since one of our companions had difficulty with stairs, we requested breakfast in the room. For an additional fee of 2,700 yen per person for a private dining setup, they kindly accommodated us. - They were very attentive to allergies and food preferences during meals. - The dishes were beautifully presented and delicious. - They showed great care by providing wheelchair assistance for my mother who has limited mobility. Disappointments: - There were many stairs between the front desk, guest rooms, and dining area; it’s advisable to consult about room location if you have mobility concerns beforehand. - An unwanted insect appeared in the room (they addressed it promptly). - There was some dirt on one futon (it was replaced immediately). - No turndown service provided (e.g., coffee cups or glasses weren’t refreshed while we were out for dinner). It would be nice if used items in the room could be replenished at this price range for a ryokan. Beautiful garden, wonderful baths, delicious meals, kind staff—thank you for providing us with such a lovely holiday!

A Ryokan you must stay at least once.

I visited to experience whether this accommodation is suitable for hosting affluent international guests. In August, I stayed at two new luxury ryokans in Hokkaido and three ryokans under the Jinya brand. What impressed me about Jinya was how well they manage a ryokan of this scale. The meals, baths, and staff were 5-star excellent. The living room and bedroom were standard deluxe quality. I felt it might be a bit challenging to narrow down the target audience for customers. Aman Kyoto offers one night with two meals for 1-2 people at approximately four times the price of Jinya, targeting only ultra-high-net-worth individuals. I hope to visit again soon with my friends!

    Excellent

No need to travel all the way to Hakone, and with its convenient location near the station yet spacious grounds, it was incredibly relaxing as if being in the mountains, free from car noises. The staff's service was perfectly attentive and pleasant, and the Japanese cuisine we enjoyed was more delicious and memorable than any other Ryokan we've visited. We would love to visit again.

    Excellent

The meticulously selected furnishings and the cuisine, crafted with care and attention, were truly exceptional. I was pleasantly surprised by the effort put into the children's menu as well. The balance between modernization through IT and the attentive service provided by the staff is impressive and likely to appeal to a wide range of guests. This was my first visit, but I am certain to return to enjoy it throughout all seasons.
