The Onsen is amazing.
The Onsen was excellent. The staff were very kind, and I had a comfortable stay. In the private bath, I couldn’t find the power outlet for the hair dryer, which was a bit disappointing. I will visit again. I’ve found a favorite Accommodation.

Highly recommended.
- The meals are delicious and plentiful. - There are two public Onsens, and both are great. - All the staff are kind and helpful. - The Room feels a bit old. - Depending on the Room, you may notice noise from the hallway. I’d like to stay here again when I visit Kumamoto. Thank you very much.

Best Ryokan
I truly felt the warm hospitality. The open-air bath and facilities were excellent, and the surrounding scenery was like something out of a fairy tale.

Excellent value for money
The view from the Room was breathtaking. Many Accommodations offer no view at night, but here the scenery from the Room was beautifully illuminated, and we really enjoyed it. The in-room Onsen had a good buildup of mineral deposits and felt like high-quality water. However, the temperature was too hot, so it took time to get used to and we couldn’t soak for long. Since there was no way to adjust the temperature at all, we would appreciate some improvement. The meals were extremely satisfying in both quantity and quality—more than we could finish. They even brought dessert to our Room, which was wonderfully attentive. It was a bit disappointing that we weren’t shown to our Room even after check-in time—perhaps due to staff shortages—but we would like to visit again.

I have stayed here s...
I have stayed here several times. Thank you as always for your hospitality. All the staff are friendly and approachable, with a comfortable level of attentiveness that never feels intrusive, and I have never had any issues with the service. I always use the detached Room, and not only is the view from the Room wonderful, but the scenery from the private open-air bath is also excellent. For meals, you choose a main hot pot from several options in advance, but I think it would be nice to have choices other than hot pot as well—since this is Kumamoto Aso, something like lava-grilled dishes (a classic) would be great. As some items on the menu are the same each time, I would also appreciate it if things could be changed up for repeat visits. I heard that your owner is acquainted with the owner of a well-known luxury Ryokan, and “BIG Kumamon,” whom I used to see there all the time, now lives at Hanayuzu. Some parts of the property and furnishings in the Rooms that have been updated feel similar to that Ryokan, and there are even some identical items. I stayed at that Ryokan many times before, but after developing leg problems I can no longer go there because of all the steps. Since discovering Hanayuzu, I visit about every other trip to Kumamoto. I’m looking forward to coming back again.

Excellent,
What I liked 1. Amenities: L’OCCITANE products, a 5-blade razor, and four heated bath towels provided as standard. The refrigerator was fully stocked with juice, beer, and many other drinks—all free. Unlimited ice cream. 2. Meals: I had sukiyaki as the main dish. Before the main course, there were about 5–6 items including sashimi. The sukiyaki came with so much meat that I was completely full, and they said refills were also available. Rice: cooked in a special pot; it looked glossy but tasted average—such a shame. 3. Room: An open-air bath surrounded by many bamboo lanterns—it truly cleanses the soul. These are just some highlights. The heated towels may not be necessary. The service was excellent, and I would stay again.

It was very relaxing.
This was our second stay. Our previous visit was exactly a year ago. As mentioned in other Reviews, we did not have a particularly good impression then. So why did we return? Because the Onsen was wonderful, and we wanted to enjoy it again. Please forgive my bluntness, but we made our Reservation without expecting much hospitality and stayed anyway. However, this time exceeded our expectations—from the warm welcome on arrival to the staff’s attentive service and their thoughtful care during meals, for which we are truly grateful. The staff’s courteous hospitality—and perhaps it has always been this way—felt even more sincere than before. We could genuinely sense their desire to listen carefully to guests’ feedback. They even saw us off at the end of our stay, and we are thankful that it became such a pleasant anniversary for us. This has become an Accommodation that makes us want to return again. Thank you very much.

I’m glad I stayed there, and I’d like to visit again someday.
This was an Accommodation I had wanted to visit for a long time, so I was overjoyed when I was able to make a Reservation. When we arrived, it did feel like you were short-staffed, but the hospitality and care shown by everyone on the team were wonderful. The Onsen with mineral flakes drifting in the water was amazing—I've stayed at many Accommodations, but this was my first time experiencing anything like it, and I was truly impressed. Even though I usually don’t stay in the bath for long, I ended up soaking for quite a while and felt surprisingly fine. I was also surprised to find complimentary ice cream, juice, and tea set out in various places. Since it was a cold season, you prepared an adorable cat-shaped hot-water bottle for us, and we were able to sleep warmly with it. Next time, I’d love to stay in a different Room. Thank you as well for the lovely gift.

Various reviews make perfect sense.
Our accommodation is highly rated. Although some reviews mentioned strict opinions such as no welcoming staff or having to carry luggage by oneself, I believe this is due to a shortage of staff at the accommodation. During our stay, the manager personally handled everything from check-in to check-out, which made our experience thoroughly satisfying. After dinner, we were even treated to Anno sweet potatoes as a late-night snack. It turns out that the manager is a professional in hospitality who came from a five-star accommodation as a "playing manager." However, I think this alone cannot solve the issue. Unless more staff are hired and second or third-tier personnel are trained, guests visiting on days when the manager is off may not become repeat customers. As also mentioned in reviews, for dishes like sukiyaki and shabu-shabu, focusing on quality over quantity would be better since tough meat left us with more than half uneaten. Guests paying this price range likely prioritize quality over quantity. The onsen was exceptional beyond words; it was always at an ideal temperature regardless of when we entered—just as even critical guests have praised. We will visit again when the manager is present!

The Onsen and guest rooms are excellent, but...
This Ryokan may not be suitable for those looking to splurge on exceptional service. Unfortunately, our stay turned out to be a bit disappointing. As some other guests have mentioned, the service—especially regarding meals—has significant issues. While the portions are adequate, the quality and attention to detail leave much to be desired. For example, Onsen eggs served with fried chicken, no proper preparation for the main sukiyaki dish leaving it up to guests and ruining the experience, unresponsive staff despite repeated calls using the bell, and desserts labeled as a "dessert buffet" turning out to be items like stale bamboo leaf-wrapped dumplings or baked cheesecake instead of fresh fruits. Breakfast was also far from enjoyable, adding more concerns that seem endless. That said, there are some excellent aspects: unlimited drinks and ice cream systems were delightful; rooms with private open-air baths were truly wonderful; amenities provided by L'Occitane added a luxurious touch; and I personally enjoyed the playful addition of what resembled a chimpanzee bed in our room. If they improve their dining experience as promised during discussions with Ryokan staff about these issues—and if future reviews reflect such improvements—I would consider visiting again.

The Ultimate Onsen Accommodation
I stayed at the accommodation for the first time during Obon. First, the drinks and ice cream in the lobby. While drinks are a common service, I was amazed by the wide variety of cup ice creams available. I was guided to a separate building called "Kobushi," and I was thoroughly impressed with the room's spaciousness, cleanliness, contents of the free drink refrigerator, and most importantly, the private open-air bath attached to the room. The complimentary private open-air bath was also excellent, but honestly unnecessary because of how amazing our room's open-air bath was. The view from the bath, water temperature, and quality of spring water with floating mineral deposits were all at an impressive level. Additionally, the mille-feuille hot pot was outstanding. I believe I will visit this place many times in the future.

The open-air bath was excellent.
Upon arrival, the staff warmly welcomed us and provided excellent service throughout our stay. Our Room was upgraded, which was a pleasant surprise. The open-air bath offered stunning views of majestic mountains during the day and a beautifully lit garden with bamboo crafts under the bright moon at night. The lukewarm water allowed for a relaxing soak without discomfort even after extended time. Meals were delicious, served in beautiful dishes, and included hearty portions of sukiyaki with Waou beef and Akaushi beef. The Japanese-Western dessert buffet was also delightful. We would love to visit again when traveling to Kyushu!

Golden Week Couple's Getaway
We stayed at a slightly distant accommodation during the long weekend! It was our first time staying there, so we were a bit anxious, but we were very satisfied! The quality of the onsen was amazing, with mineral deposits floating in the water. Since we arrived early, we enjoyed relaxing in the private open-air bath attached to our room. However, even though it was May, it was quite cold in Oguni as the washing area was only outdoors. In hindsight, perhaps choosing a room with both an indoor bath and an open-air bath would have been better. My husband usually enjoys morning baths as well, but since the temperature of the flowing onsen had dropped by then, he couldn’t use it. The bamboo lanterns at night were absolutely beautiful! As we stayed in a Japanese-style room with futons laid out for us to sleep on, I found them too thin and felt uncomfortable since I’m used to sleeping on beds. While I could tell that they used high-quality mats for bedding, layering them over something thicker might have improved comfort. There seemed to be rooms with beds available too—this might have been my mistake when choosing! Other than that, everything else like drinks and snacks provided in the room was excellent! The three types of meat served at dinner were incredibly delicious! Next time we stay here, I’d like to carefully choose both the type of room and bath for a more relaxing experience!

Unfortunately.
The Onsen was great. However, other aspects were disappointing. What bothered me the most was that the pajamas were torn. It was a large tear that should have been noticed if they were being washed regularly. Also, I chose chicken hot pot for dinner, but the chicken served was frozen solid. The horse sashimi had excessive drippings as well. The Canadian horse sashimi I had at the airport on my way back was much better. In the morning, I called the front desk but got no response; later, a staff member explained they were busy preparing breakfast at that time. I understood why the meal quality was low when I learned it was made by a local lady from nearby. If there is a staff shortage, I believe they should limit the number of guests accordingly.

It feels like I'm getting hooked.
Thank you for your hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed an extraordinary and blissful two days. From the warm welcome at check-in, our stay began on a pleasant note. Our room was a private accommodation with an open-air bath, so we initially didn’t plan to use the private onsen. However, upon the staff’s recommendation, we decided to make a reservation and enjoyed our first relaxing time before dinner during daylight hours. It was truly rejuvenating for both body and mind, allowing us to shift into a world of happiness away from everyday life. The dinner that followed was absolutely delicious with a wide variety of dishes. Despite the generous portions, we finished everything—including dessert—with great satisfaction! Returning to our room in high spirits, we then indulged in the open-air bath attached to our room. Like the private onsen earlier, this luxurious flowing hot spring featured floating mineral deposits with perfect water quality and temperature—so comfortable that it felt like we could soak forever. The next morning's breakfast was also luxurious with many options—all equally delicious. The hospitality struck just the right balance of attentiveness without being intrusive, making our stay very comfortable. This was my first experience staying in a room with an open-air bath—and I’ve now discovered how wonderful it is! Perhaps it’s because this accommodation exceeded all expectations! We chose this as a reward for ourselves after working hard every day—and left completely satisfied and recharged to tackle life again starting today. I’d love to try staying in other private accommodations here as well—and look forward to visiting again soon. Thank you for providing such wonderful moments. To the General Manager and all staff members—please take care of yourselves while continuing to offer relaxation and joy to many guests!

Unforgettable Accommodation
I didn't have high expectations due to the reviews, but overall, it was excellent. When we were running late for our check-in time, they kindly called to check if we were lost. The Ryokan has relatively few steps inside, and the dining area is close to the room, making it easy for elderly guests to move around. The Onsen attached to the room required going outside, which was tough during cold seasons. However, they provided heaters and thick bath towels that were even warmed—this was truly impressive. Amenities had a lovely L'Occitane fragrance. The fridge was fully stocked with a variety of drinks available for free, and there was unlimited ice cream as well! Drinks at the dining area were also much more reasonably priced compared to other accommodations in a similar price range. One downside was finding trash from previous guests in the sanitary box of our room and long periods when no one was present at the front desk. Other than that, it was a memorable and wonderful accommodation. The bedding suited me perfectly; I slept better here than I ever have at any other accommodation. I would love to visit again!

The customer service was disappointing.
This Ryokan did not provide a welcoming or farewell service, and the meal serving was delayed, possibly due to a staff shortage. It was truly disappointing, especially since the private open-air bath was excellent.

Great!
The review was not very good, so I was a little worried! When we arrived, it was raining a little, and when we got out of the car, the staff brought us an umbrella. They were very kind and it was great. The room was clean and very comfortable. The open-air bath was wonderful! The food was delicious! It was nice to be able to have seconds of rice and sukiyaki meat. This time I came with my family, but next time I would like to come with friends.

Disappointed
I don't understand why the reviews are good. Compared to other properties, the cost performance is too poor. <Good Points> - The hot water is good - The private open-air bath and the room bath itself. It's nice that there are plenty of towels provided - L'Occitane amenities (but the lotion and emulsion are cheap 2-in-1 products) - Unlimited ice cream cups from Kumamoto's gelateria Capri <Bad Points> - Meals. Not bad, but not particularly delicious. The taste is on the strong side. Are they just trying to fill you up with quantity? It doesn't match the price. - Service. They might be trying hard, but it's clearly understaffed. - Cleaning. The drinks in the room's refrigerator, which is probably one of the selling points, are free, but there was an opened sake bottle and cup. - The room bath in the "Hakobe" room we stayed in is located in a way that you have to move outside under the eaves. In cold weather, you lose the motivation to move, and it's fully visible from the shared area (the passage to the private open-air bath and smoking area). - Anniversary plan. After being full, they serve a simple whole cake. They take a picture of you holding it, and the next morning, they give you a low-quality print in a photo frame. Also, a 1200 yen Kyoto sake. All for 6000 yen. It would clearly be better if they gave a small flower instead. Overall, not good. I won't stay again.

The best Stays
A property reopening in May 2024 The detached Kobushi room features a private indoor bath and open-air bath. At night, you can soak luxuriously in the onsen under the light of bamboo lanterns and a starry sky, and in the morning, enjoy the spectacular mountain views and wide-open sky. The room's furnishings and appliances are all high-end. Dinner includes meticulously prepared and flavorful kaiseki cuisine and shabu-shabu. The rice cooked in a stone oven was the most delicious white rice I've ever tasted. I was impressed by the exquisite dishes that reflect the spirit of professional chefs! After the meal, we were soothed by a wonderful live flute performance, making it an unforgettable stay for my spouse and me, with the best hospitality in every aspect. It's a property we definitely want to visit again.

I will write exactly what I felt.
The review on IKYU was very good, so I decided to stay this time. I have stayed at various properties, but this was the first time I encountered a property that did not live up to its reviews. There was no welcome as mentioned in the reviews, and I had to carry my own luggage into the property. It was a slightly chilly day. Regarding the food, the warm dishes were not warm but cold. The last dish was supposed to be sukiyaki, but there was no explanation on how to prepare it, and I had to cook it myself. Since I was on a trip, I wished the restaurant would have provided the cooking service. What I felt throughout the stay was that amateurs were handling the business and customer service? On the surface, it was polite, but it was not a heartfelt service with attention to detail. It was not worth the price. Upon leaving, I carried my own luggage to the car and left the property without any send-off. There were many things missing in the room I stayed in, and I had to check each time. It was a shame because the bath was good.

We stayed for one night in a detached room. It was our first stay, but the staff were very courteous and responded willingly to our frequent requests, such as moving the bed and adding an extra futon. Both the room bath and the private bath were onsen with a slight sulfur scent, and the temperature was just right, so my daughter soaked in it slowly, saying it was "very pleasant." The open-air bath in the room was also a sufficient size, but the private bath was so large that it felt like a public bath, and our family of four enjoyed it comfortably. The meals were also very generous, with all-you-can-eat meat for shabu-shabu and a choice of about 30 types of desserts, which was a service we had never experienced at any ryokan before, and we were very satisfied. Inside the property, you could eat local ice cream as much as you wanted, and drinks in the refrigerator, including beer and sake, were free, allowing us to enjoy the ultimate luxury of drinking sake while soaking in the onsen. It was an onsen trip that left the whole family very satisfied. We would like to stay again.

I had a very pleasant stay. Next time, I would like to stay in a room with a separate bed and TV area. The seasoning of the meals was excellent, and while the open-air bath was nice, the indoor bath was spacious and very satisfying. This is a property I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you in advance for that time. Thank you very much.

First-class environment and service
The room has an indoor bath and an open-air bath, with the water temperature being just right, making it very comfortable. Thanks to the hotel's consideration, citrus fruits were also provided for the Onsen, giving off a refreshing aroma. Additionally, the service and meals are first-class. Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed this trip.

The Ultimate Stays
I stayed with my son's family in the detached room Kobushi. The room was spacious and the facilities were well-equipped. The indoor bath and open-air bath in the room were excellent. The open-air bath, in particular, had a great view and was fantastically lit at night. It's a property I would like to stay at again.

I didn't have high expectations, but it is a very good Ryokan.
I made a reservation on 8/24 to take advantage of Respect for the Aged Day and stay in the Kurokawa Onsen area for the first time in a while. This is the only Ryokan in the Kurokawa Onsen area with a room that has an open-air bath, so I made the reservation thinking it was a bit of a gamble in a lonely place. The room is the only one in the main building, Susuki. As I pinpoint the location with the car navigation system, there is a solitary building at the foot of Mount Waita. However, the entrance has a nice atmosphere with its noren curtain. Walking down the black tatami corridor without slippers, I reach the room. The room is a 10-tatami mat space. There is a veranda with a rock bath open-air bath. The moderate sulfur scent enhances the onsen travel experience. Immediately to the bath. The water is very good, soft in the evening sunlight filtering through the trees. I cool off in the tatami room where the air conditioning works very well, feeling grateful to be Japanese. Meals are served in a separate room with a window view like a paper cutout. The Bungo beef mille-feuille hot pot is, of course, delicious, but what impressed me was the rice. It is said to be a rice called Silk Road, harvested in this area. I brought some back as a souvenir. After dinner, there was a flute performance in the lobby. I had a very good time. The next morning, after a good night's sleep, of course, the bath. I enjoy the bath in the morning sun, surrounded by the dappled sunlight through the maple trees. Breakfast is orthodox. Of course, it's delicious. I was impressed by the language and earnestness of the young man in samue who was serving. It turns out that due to a staff shortage, he is actually a shinobue performer from this Ryokan group, helping out. He asked if I would like him to play a tune, and of course, I requested it. I heard that he is scheduled to debut with Sony soon. I was treated to a good performance. I heard that this is a sister Ryokan of "Sansou Takefue" in Kurokawa Onsen. I haven't stayed there yet, but it was one of the Ryokans I definitely wanted to stay at. I could understand why they provide good service. Pros: Kutani ware and Noshu tin tableware, which are said to be the chef's hobbies. Since we are in Kyushu, it might be even better if they could provide Imari or Kakiemon ware. Black tatami corridor. The connecting corridor creaks like a nightingale floor, adding charm. All-you-can-drink ice cream and soft drinks. The staff's language and demeanor are impeccable. Cons: The bottom of the open-air bath in the private bath is rough concrete. The hose for watering the garden in the separate room was green but exposed. Perhaps due to a staff shortage, there was a slight delay in serving and billing. I hope the staff shortage is resolved.
