    It was disappointing.

    We arrived by car, but perhaps due to staff shortages, there was no greeting even after we arrived. After opening the door and giving our name at the front desk, we were served tea and a hot towel in a separate room. A little later, we were shown to our detached Room in an annex-style layout and given an explanation. The washbasin area and toilet were not heated, so it was cold when using them at night and in the morning. The bath was small, and the open-air bath had rough rocks and was also small, so it took effort to soak up to my shoulders. Dinner and breakfast were also disappointing, honestly. I have stayed at various Ryokan in the past, but this time everything fell short of expectations. This is a harsh review, but I am posting it in hopes of improvements going forward.

    I stayed in the "Gakuajisai" room this time. Each room is separate, allowing for a very quiet and peaceful stay. However, as I did not thoroughly check during the Reservation process, I ended up booking a room with only an open-air bath and no indoor bath. The changing area was inconvenient to use; the floor got wet, making it difficult to put on my yukata. The meals were absolutely delicious. They featured plenty of seasonal ingredients, which left me completely satisfied. All the staff members were calm and provided courteous service.

    Luxurious Accommodation

    Thank you for your hospitality. The staff who assisted us from arrival to meals were very attentive, and during the meal, we even had the chance to ask the chef about how to make the sauce. We were able to relax and enjoy our time leisurely. We visit Kyushu once a year, and we’ve found another wonderful accommodation. We would love to visit again if we have the opportunity. However, it was unfortunate that we couldn’t use the outdoor bath in the morning because of low water temperature due to rain. Thank you very much!

    Meals are excellent!

    I was talking with my wife, and we realized that while we've dined at various Ryokans before, there was always something missing. However, this time we were completely satisfied with every dish. The grilled black Wagyu beef on magnolia leaf and the Yudai 21 rice cooked in a traditional pot were especially delicious—we ended up eating too much! The staff's service was also polite and made for a pleasant experience.

    Family Trip

    The room was clean, and there were two private open-air baths in the room. As a family of four, we were able to relax and enjoy the Onsen. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were exquisite. Although I am usually picky with food, everything was delicious, and I could eat it all. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    It was truly a wonderful accommodation. I definitely want to visit again!

    I originally planned to visit with my grandparents, but due to their health issues, I ended up visiting with my sister instead. The Room was very clean. The hairdryer, hair iron, and curling iron were all from Refa, which I think is a great touch for women. The private open-air bath attached to the Room was just the right size for two people, and the water was smooth and very comfortable to bathe in. Above all, the meals were absolutely delicious! They looked amazing and tasted even better! Everything was exceptional—I even saw my usually light-eating sister finish her meal for the first time. The staff at reception, those who guided us to our Room, and everyone at the restaurant were all incredibly kind and welcoming. When we asked about recommended spots in Oita Prefecture, they went out of their way to research thoroughly while considering the weather before giving us advice. Everything about our stay was wonderful; I would love to visit again!

    If there were no plans, it was an accommodation where I would want to stay for multiple nights.

    After several years, I finally gave a 5-star rating. From check-in to dinner, the male staff member's exceptional service was impressive. The room's open-air bath was delightful, but the dinner surpassed all expectations. The head chef personally checked on the restaurant and ensured that each dish was perfectly seasoned and meticulously prepared with high-quality ingredients—it was evident in every bite. It’s rare to find an accommodation where the chef sees off guests at departure. For future improvements: Disposable slippers in the room would be appreciated since many people use the facilities, and walking barefoot or in socks felt uncomfortable. Regarding welcome towels and meal times, using black towels three times raised questions about cleanliness—pure white towels would feel more appropriate for meals. Additionally, the layout of the toilet and washbasin could be improved; having to go around from one to reach the other felt inconvenient. A more standard arrangement with a washbasin directly accessible from an open toilet door might work better. Despite these points, this accommodation still deserved a 5-star rating without hesitation. I look forward to visiting again!

    It was excellent.

    We stayed as a family of four over the weekend. It’s a very new accommodation, and we managed to make a reservation two months ago. We were extremely satisfied with the room and meals. The bath was too hot to enter without diluting it with water, which was the only downside, but considering it’s midsummer in Yufuin, it’s understandable. My wife and daughter expressed their desire to visit again due to the pleasant service that wasn’t overbearing, along with the wonderful room and meals. Thank you very much!

    It was a very nice a...

    It was a very nice accommodation. The staff were polite and kind. Since it is in a detached style, it was very quiet. The room's open-air bath allowed us to relax while enjoying the view of the trees. The food was delicious with a variety of unique dishes, which made us very satisfied. We had fun talking with a chef from our hometown as well. We made several requests to the staff, and they handled everything properly, which we appreciated. When we were leaving, we happened to meet the head chef who helped carry our luggage, making us feel that everyone shared a spirit of hospitality.

What impressed us the most was the thoughtfulness and hospitality of your staff, which we felt throughout our stay. We were able to create wonderful memories.     Satisfying Accommodation

    - Room The bed was large and spacious, providing great satisfaction. The traditional design of the room with its high ceiling made it feel even more spacious. - Onsen The water is clear, but it leaves your skin smooth, indicating excellent quality. As it is a natural free-flowing hot spring, the water temperature tends to be on the higher side, but the outdoor bath was just the right size to easily adjust with cold water. - Meals The meals were delicious and made with plenty of high-quality ingredients. Breakfast also featured dishes that paired perfectly with rice and were very tasty. - Surroundings We stayed during the Obon holiday, but being in a mountainous area, we didn’t feel any heat. The sound of cicadas unique to rural areas was pleasant rather than bothersome. Since it's slightly away from Yufuin's tourist spots, there weren’t many tourists around, making it an ideal place for those who want a quiet stay. - Requests While the meals were very delicious, they felt slightly small in portion for men. Additionally, I stayed with my middle school-aged son who seems to prefer hearty dishes like meat or hamburgers over luxurious cuisine at this age—would it be possible to switch his meal to a kids' menu? Alternatively, having an option for à la carte items would be greatly appreciated!

    The staff are very kind, and the meals are excellent at this accommodation.

    The garden greenery was beautiful, and it was a lovely accommodation. We enjoyed the onsen and foot bath in the room, which was incredibly relaxing. It was delightful to find ReFa products like a hair dryer, curling iron, and straightener, as well as amenities from THREE and MARVIS. The staff were genuinely kind and provided excellent recommendations for nearby sightseeing spots, making our trip even more enjoyable. Both the room and onsen were fantastic, as was the exceptional service from the staff—but above all, the meals were absolutely delicious and truly impressive. Thank you for accommodating allergies so thoughtfully. We would love to visit again!

    A luxurious accommodation.

    For our first 3-day, 2-night trip to Kyushu, we decided to stay one night at the Yufuin Onsen we had always dreamed of visiting. After thorough research (with so much information available online, including YouTube), we chose to stay at "Yufuin Rakuyu." It’s no exaggeration to say it was the best Ryokan we've ever experienced. Despite the unfortunate stormy weather, the warm welcome from the staff and the clean and private accommodation made for a relaxing stay. The room was equipped with a ReFa hair dryer and hair iron, as well as a shower and an open-air bath where we could adjust the water temperature ourselves—an enjoyable experience. The meals were exquisite, featuring high-quality ingredients and local produce. When I mentioned during a conversation with staff that this trip was for my wife's birthday, they surprised us with beautiful decorations when we ordered cocktails in the lounge after dinner. Both my wife and I were deeply touched by their thoughtful gesture. Thank you so much. We look forward to revisiting "Yufuin Rakuyu" on a sunny day next time. Thank you again!

    An accommodation that makes you want to visit Yufuin again just to stay here.

    It was truly an amazing accommodation. The meals and hospitality were especially outstanding. - Meals Since it was a multiple night stay, we had breakfast and dinner twice each, and every menu was different, visually stunning, and absolutely delicious. The portions were just right—not too much or too little—allowing us to enjoy the fullness typical of a ryokan meal without feeling overly stuffed. As someone who eats quickly, I often find myself waiting for the next course in multi-course meals, but here everything was served at perfect timing. I was also touched by the thoughtful gesture of adjusting the chopstick rest position to accommodate my left-handedness. - Bath We stayed in a room with an open-air bath only. The water temperature could be adjusted manually to our preference, which was great. The beautiful garden view while soaking in the bath added to the experience. Since it's located in the mountains, insects naturally gather around the open-air bath; those uncomfortable with bugs might prefer rooms that also have indoor baths for peace of mind. - Room The room was spacious, clean, and incredibly comfortable. It offered plenty of relaxing spots like a large bed, sofa, and oversized chairs. While maintaining traditional charm in its architecture, it also provided modern luxuries such as high-quality ReFa hair dryers and straighteners as well as a high-definition TV—adding an extraordinary touch. - Hospitality The staff were approachable yet not overly intrusive; by checkout time they felt almost like friends—including even the head chef! They responded promptly and kindly when any issues arose and created a warm atmosphere throughout our stay. This is not just an accommodation I would choose again when visiting Yufuin—it’s one that makes me want to visit Yufuin specifically to stay here at this ryokan!     I found a great accommodation after a long time.

    - All the meals were delicious. The flavors were delicate and refined, without being bland or overly seasoned. Even classic dishes had a unique twist, such as the ginger-infused amazake served at breakfast, which was perfectly balanced and delightful. The portion sizes were just right—not too much, not too little. - The staff's hospitality was exceptional. The manager and all the staff members were friendly and provided excellent service with great attention to detail. We had a wonderful time chatting during dinner! The selection of drinks, including whiskey and wine, was extensive, making it hard to resist indulging in more than usual. - Room The room was impeccably clean and beautifully maintained. It featured high-quality amenities like ReFa hair dryers and styling tools, which I truly appreciated as a woman who likes to switch up hairstyles depending on the day—having both a curling iron and straightener readily available was especially convenient. The open-air bath was simply outstanding! With many accommodations catering heavily to international tourists these days, I wondered if this place might be similar—but that wasn’t the case at all! It offered a relaxing atmosphere where I could unwind comfortably. I hope to visit again someday!

    Impressive hospitality from the staff, excellent meals, and an open-air bath.

    We booked two rooms for our parents and adult children. From the phone support during the Reservation, to the warm welcome, attentive care during meals, and thoughtful send-off, all the staff treated us with such kindness and professionalism. We are truly grateful and glad we chose Rakuyou. The 43-degree slightly hot Onsen was perfect. The "Himeyuri" Room had two private open-air baths where temperature adjustments were easy. Our daughters relaxed so much they started humming tunes, while my wife enjoyed a foot bath on a rock seat while taking in the beautiful scenery. It was a luxurious experience unique to having an open-air bath attached to our Room. Despite the cold weather, underfloor heating kept us comfortable as temperatures were adjusted by the front desk. We had a wonderful time reconnecting with our children and parents after so long. Dinner featured an extensive menu showcasing carefully selected ingredients. Each dish was explained thoroughly as we enjoyed every bite with amazement at its deliciousness. The staff kindly checked everyone's food preferences in advance and accommodated alternative ingredients when needed, which made us very happy. For drinks, we ordered "Chiebijin" by bottle but also received recommendations that helped us choose another bottle perfectly suited to our taste for round two! Breakfast included charmingly designed placemats that delighted everyone; we took photos together as keepsakes of this memorable trip. This trip was chosen as a family getaway to honor our beloved dog who passed away at 14 years old—and it became an unforgettable journey in Yufuin filled with warmth and joy.     Stayed during Christmas. The property has been renovated, and the floor heating kept it warm and comfortable. A very pleasant female staff member explained the meals, and the portions were just right.

    First Property Stay

    It was my first time at this property, and the meals were very well thought out and extremely delicious. The pufferfish salad and the bowl-style sesame tofu beef roll had a solid taste yet were lightly seasoned. Also, the rice was shiny and seemed like I could eat several bowls of it. It was unfortunate that there wasn't any wine by the glass. The room was compactly arranged, which was nice; however, having the bedside near the entrance to the bath felt more suitable for younger guests. I prefer when there's a continuation from the washbasin to the bath entrance, and I also wondered about not having a handwashing area inside the toilet. Although there is barrier-free access in the washbasin area, there is a small step at the toilet entrance which made me think it was barrier-free until my foot stumbled slightly, making it feel dangerous. Nevertheless, above all else, thank you for such delicious food.

    The scenery with a mix of autumn leaves and snow was very beautiful. I was moved by the snowfall in the morning. The Facility was also very clean and hygienic. I thoroughly enjoyed the meals and was very satisfied. As someone who stays at various places, I highly recommend this Property.

    It was the best Stays that I can confidently recommend.

    It was my first visit to Yufuin in over 10 years, and I had a wonderful time. 1. Room Each room is separate, and the view from the front desk to the room is beautiful and enjoyable. The room itself is spacious and clean, with an open-air bath, making it a comfortable stay. (I enjoyed the bath three times in one day.) Half of the room has floor heating, so it stays warm at night. The drinks in the refrigerator are complimentary, including water, beer, and kabosu juice. The amenities are of high quality, with soft tissues and a Refa hairdryer with a stand. 2. Location If there is no traffic, it takes about 5 to 7 minutes by shuttle service from Yufuin Station, and about 40 minutes on foot from the station to the property. There is a steep uphill when walking from the station to the property, so it might take a bit longer. However, they offer flexible shuttle service upon request, so it was not inconvenient without a car. It takes about 20 minutes on foot from the property to Lake Kinrin. 3. Cuisine I had dinner and breakfast for two nights. The dinner dishes were visually appealing and delicious. The appetizers were beautiful and tasty, the dobinmushi had a wonderful broth, and the fresh sashimi was unforgettable. Personally, the grilled eel was so delicious it was unforgettable. They also made cocktails based on simple requests like "sweet and refreshing," which were very tasty. The raspberry liqueur mixed with kabosu was so delicious that I had it both nights. Breakfast started with warm amazake and included warm vegetables and side dishes that went well with rice, providing a satisfying yet gentle meal. 4. Staff Service Everyone was always smiling and kind, and they responded sincerely to inquiries and requests. When I asked if I could take home the origami cranes displayed at the dining area, they kindly helped me figure out how to take them home without bending them. Thank you. (They are now happily displayed at the entrance of my home.) The staff also provided professional service in various languages for international guests. This is an excellent property where you won't regret staying. If you have the opportunity, please visit.
