The in-room open-air bath was wonderful.
The open-air bath in the garden Room was charming and wonderful. The Room seems to have been beautifully renovated to suit modern times while preserving a good old Japanese atmosphere. At night, we heard a chorus of frogs, and in the morning, birdsong—it felt like the first time I’d heard them in decades, and it was truly lovely. That said, the frogs can be quite loud and continue late into the night, so some guests may find it bothersome. The cuisine also appeared thoughtfully crafted to be enjoyable to look at as well. Our sightseeing plans were canceled due to rain and we arrived at the Ryokan a bit early, but you kindly showed us to our Room since it was ready—thank you very much. All of the staff greeted us with smiles. Thank you as well for seeing us off until our car departed.

This is an Accommodation with a wonderful atmosphere and excellent service—I’d love to stay here again!
The front desk staff were very pleasant, and their explanation of the Room was clear and helpful. The Room and the open-air bath had a wonderful atmosphere, making it a relaxing and calming day. This has become my favorite Accommodation, and I’d love to come back for another leisurely stay!

We were very satisfied with the spacious Room and the beautifully presented, tasteful cuisine.
When you think of a Ryokan in Shuzenji, it’s easy to imagine something more “aging” than “good old-fashioned,” but this place pleasantly proved that assumption wrong. What surprised me first was the spaciousness and luxurious design of the Room. It even had two private open-air baths inside, so I could enjoy Shuzenji’s hot springs to my heart’s content without being disturbed at all during my stay. All of the staff were very young, and their sincere efforts to provide warm hospitality left a strong impression. The steady confidence of seasoned professionals is wonderful too, but the fresh sensibility and energetic service from younger staff felt truly refreshing in this historic area. As for the cuisine—my biggest concern—it far exceeded expectations. I had read some Reviews beforehand and felt a bit uneasy, but once I tried it, every dish was thoughtfully crafted and excellent. Each plate was beautifully presented as well, with a great sense of style that delighted the eyes as much as the palate. The biggest surprise was a steamed dish called “shark fin sakura manju.” It was my first time having shark fin paired with sakura manju, but the chewy texture of domyoji rice flour and the texture of the shark fin worked unexpectedly well together. The gentle aroma of cherry blossoms also spread softly—it genuinely moved me. This stay helped me discover a new side of Shuzenji. I would love to return again in another season. Thank you to all the staff for such a wonderful time.

Wonderful Accommodation
Thank you for your hospitality. My husband and I stayed to celebrate both of our birthdays. The Room was spacious and calming, and the garden was wonderful. The bath temperature was just right as well. The amenities were also well stocked. What we loved most was the food. There were many delicate, carefully prepared dishes, and the portions were perfect for us. You even brought us a cake at the end—thank you very much. I’m sorry we left without properly expressing our thanks in person. Breakfast in the morning also felt stylish, right down to the tableware. We heard that the chef was still young, but we were truly impressed. We would love to visit again.

The Room and garden are lovely.
The staff provided very courteous service, making for a pleasant stay. The cuisine was elegant and beautifully presented. Additionally, the detached accommodation was very comfortable, with a lovely garden. The Onsen is rated 4 because there was no corner to cool off after stepping out of the open-air bath. As I enjoy relaxing in such spaces, it was slightly disappointing not to have that option. However, overall, this is an excellent accommodation.

Memorial Hall Trip
We arrived early, left our car, and walked to explore the area. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. This trip was for my husband's birthday, and there was a surprise cake prepared, which made the service exceptional. All the meals were delicious. It was a wonderful accommodation.

The head chef has changed.
The bath and guest rooms were as excellent as always, but the meal offerings have changed compared to before. While the food was generally delicious, it no longer featured an array of premium ingredients like it used to and seemed to consist of more ordinary ingredients. The portions also appeared slightly smaller. It seems that the head chef has changed. This was somewhat disappointing, and I would be happy if improvements could be made. Additionally, I noticed that one of the reception staff's skirts was torn, which caught my attention.

Thank you very much.
We stayed here during a trip with my parents and were very well taken care of. The staff's attentiveness was outstanding, and we truly appreciated their prompt response to our requests. The meals lived up to the reviews, with each dish showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. This was evident even in the breakfast. As for the 4-star rating for the room, I felt it might be slightly inconvenient for those with mobility issues when entering the room, which is why I gave it 4 stars. The accommodation exuded hospitality throughout, with thoughtful touches like fresh flowers in the room.

A once-in-a-lifetime encounter, filled with meaning.
This was my third visit, but unfortunately, I don't think I'll be coming back again. It seems the concept has changed to enjoying the room at a slightly lower price. I didn't notice the price drop and made a reservation—this is all I wanted to share. What initially attracted me to this accommodation was its one-of-a-kind cuisine. This time, I made a reservation after a year because I wanted my mother to experience the delicate and exquisite dishes that only Japanese people might truly appreciate. However, amenities felt more minimal compared to last time, there were no welcome wagashi or tea served—I thought perhaps it was due to rising costs. The detached private room remained charming as ever with its unique character, and we spent a relaxing time in the room until dinner. The highlight of this trip! The arrival of dishes so refined they make you sit up straight with anticipation! "Mother! The best Japanese cuisine of your life awaits!" But then... what arrived wasn't an assortment of appetizers in beautiful plates like before but just some starters instead. Feeling something was off, we finished them anyway—they weren't bad but just ordinary... By the second and third courses—and especially with the sashimi—it became clear: "Ah, they've changed chefs." Overall impression of the meal? It felt like they simply assembled decent ingredients together—it tasted fine enough! But for someone who knows how it used to be? It was shocking content-wise. To be specific: please take note of how fish or meat is cooked—the moisture had completely dried out; everything felt parched. And as for details—the edamame in their mixed rice still had their thin skins on. If I were head chef myself? I'd focus on maximizing each ingredient's potential—this kind of result would never happen under my watch. And finally came dessert—a mysterious yellow flower-shaped chocolate paired with plant-based cream… For meals priced over 50,000 yen per night? This left me speechless. When speaking honestly about these concerns with (what seemed like) their manager—they responded by saying upfront that "the concept has changed." This same manager had previously passionately discussed pairing sake selections alongside meals during our last visit—it had been such an enjoyable experience back then too... I dislike writing complaints; I'd rather let things go quietly—but when such significant changes occur without updating websites or adjusting expectations accordingly—and when what used-to-be their main selling point (the food) disappears entirely—it’s genuinely heartbreaking. To those reading this far: cherish your favorite flavors, spaces, people & places while you can… because next time may not come around again—that’s what this experience taught me. Will I ever encounter those unforgettable dishes again...?

Stay in a charming and exquisite traditional Japanese-style architecture
As a reward for myself after taking the long-awaited national exam, I made accommodation reservations at wonderful accommodations one after another starting the week following the exam. This was my third visit. Last weekend, I stayed at the oldest hotel in Nikko's classic hotel association and was reminded of the charm of historic hotels. On Friday, before coming here, I stayed at a members-only villa in Yugawara and then traveled to Shuzenji via Odoriko train for this visit. The stay was in individual Japanese-style houses with open-air baths, each offering a unique atmosphere. I chose "Shimogamo," inspired by its round window and stone bath featured on IKYU.com's top page photo. The details of the building were delightful. For instance, bamboo accents on bedroom shelves evoked memories of bamboo groves seen en route to the accommodation. The charred cedar exterior walls were treated so that they wouldn’t leave soot when touched—both aesthetically pleasing and practical. The amenities were high-quality; even items like shampoo and conditioner came in individual packages rather than bottles often used even by five-star hotels recently. In addition to Nespresso coffee machines, multiple beverages were stocked in the refrigerator with an invitation to enjoy them freely—a thoughtful touch appreciated especially after bathing. The highlight here is not only the architecture but also its open-air bath. The spacious stone bath comfortably fits two people and offers luxurious free-flowing hot spring water without any chlorine smell—truly relaxing. At my previous stay’s villa, there were four open-air baths sourced from different springs within their large communal bath area; however, despite soaking multiple times there, my dry elbows remained unchanged. Here though, my skin became smooth thanks to this excellent hot spring water—it left such an impression that I'd return just for these baths alone! What initially drew me here was its dining experience—the meal reviews boasted an impressive 4.94 rating! As someone who travels extensively for great food paired with exceptional open-air baths across various accommodations—I couldn’t resist visiting once based on those reviews. As evident from photos shared by others online too—the dishes presented beautifully delicate cuisine served on exquisite tableware while desserts included not only fruits but also small portions of chocolate accompanied by cream—a delicious finish till last bite! However unfortunately dropping one star stems from lacking comparable emotional impact experienced during prior stays despite being most expensive among three (including meals). Perhaps due partly because earlier experiences set exceptionally high expectations—it felt less impactful relative cost-wise overall satisfaction-wise compared against previous ones enjoyed beforehand!

This was my second stay, and the meals were delicious again. I especially enjoyed the dinner dishes like fresh sea urchin rice and Fukunaga Wagyu shabu-shabu, as well as the breakfast items such as dashi-maki tamago and Saikyo-grilled black cod. The service had a perfect balance of attentiveness, and I could relax in the Onsen at my own pace. I'm looking forward to my next stay!

A wonderful memory has been added.
I made a Reservation to celebrate my husband's birthday. The Room had a nostalgic and calming atmosphere, allowing us to relax completely. The Onsen was very clean, and we could enjoy it as much as we wanted at any time, which helped us relieve our daily fatigue. At night, the sound of frogs was soothing, and we slept deeply. The meals brought out the natural flavors of the ingredients; we enjoyed the sweetness of fresh sashimi and vegetables. A surprise cake was also prepared for us, adding another happy memory to cherish. Thank you very much!

The meals were absolutely fantastic.
As the name "Hanare Accommodation" suggests, it is located a bit of a distance from the Shuzenji Onsen bus stop, though still within walking range. The room was equipped with an air purifier and an electric mosquito repellent in the bedroom, which provided a sense of comfort and security. A portable TV was also available. The private open-air bath in the room had a perfect temperature of 41°C (measured by Apple Watch), allowing for long, relaxing soaks. For amenities, in addition to yukata, samue were also provided, which were convenient to wear during meals. What stood out most was the exceptional dining experience—elaborate dishes made with luxurious ingredients were truly impressive. If I had to mention one minor point, it would be that the selection of sake during meals felt slightly expensive. That said, I would love to stay here again. Thank you very much!

The Room was general...
The Room was generally clean, but the accessory case was dusty and dirty. The front staff recommended its use, but I was surprised they didn’t notice the dust. I visited this time looking forward to the semi-open-air bath, but it was completely visible from the building across. The Room wear also smelled sweaty. For this price, I would expect better service. It’s a shame because the food and serving staff were excellent, but I won’t be returning.

The meals were very delicious. However, during my Multiple Night Stay, I was disappointed that the three kinds of pickled dishes served with dinner were the same for two consecutive days. I would have appreciated some variation, even if it was just one different item.

A wonderful Japanese-style Ryokan!
This time, I visited Shuzenji Onsen for the first time in a while! Also, it was my first stay at "Oni no Sumika." Each room is a separate Japanese-style building, creating a calm property with a nostalgic atmosphere. Dinner and breakfast are served in the dining area, and the "Japanese Kaiseki" cuisine is an exquisite masterpiece of luxury! It was very delicious. It pairs well with both wine and sake! I thought it was worth visiting just for the food! The onsen quality of Shuzenji is gentle on the body and wonderful! It's perfect for relaxing and forgetting the hustle and bustle of city life. Moreover, all the staff provided excellent first-class hospitality service! It's an ideal ryokan that fits perfectly with historic Shuzenji. It's a property I'd like to visit again! Many thanks to everyone at Stays (Oni no Sumika), especially the head chef. I am grateful!

I had the best time ...
I had the best time with impeccable service throughout. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were extremely satisfying and by far the best among all the Ryokans I have visited. Of course, the taste of the ingredients was excellent, but I was also impressed by the skills of those who prepared them. I had some dietary restrictions and consulted in advance; their response was pleasant and very satisfactory. This is a highly recommended Property, and I would love to visit again if given the opportunity. Thank you very much for this experience.

Blissful moments away from everyday life
It was a quiet, charming, and very lovely Property. We were completely satisfied with everything. Especially, the cuisine was outstanding. We enjoyed a variety of seasonal delicacies, beautifully presented dishes, and luxurious meals that brought out the natural flavors of the ingredients. The Room was clean, and the Onsen was clear, smooth, and at the perfect temperature, so we bathed multiple times. Additionally, the staff were warm and attentive, providing excellent service, which made our stay very comfortable. This time, we visited as a couple. Even after returning home, we keep saying how wonderful it was and how we want to visit again. Thank you for the happy moments.

Three steps to go for this price range.
I read other people's reviews and stay records before making a reservation. I use about 10 to 15 similar properties every year. Due to the schedule of the Odoriko train, I arrived about 20 minutes early, but I was smoothly guided, which was helpful. Unusually for a ryokan of this class (over 150,000 yen per night), there were no welcome drinks. The room was neither too large nor too small, just the right size. The private open-air bath was spacious enough for two people, which was nice. However, the water was quite hot and the temperature couldn't be adjusted (or maybe it could, but there were no instructions), so it's not suitable for long baths. As for dinner, it took about three and a half hours without alcohol, so those who want to finish eating quickly should be cautious. There weren't many dishes, but the serving was quite slow, with a lot of waiting time. It might be good for those who want to enjoy a leisurely meal. For breakfast, since there was a checkout time, I asked for the serving to be as quick as possible. Tea and towels were not provided unless requested. I thought the food itself was delicious. At check-in, I was asked if I needed a taxi for the return, so I requested one, but when I checked out, the taxi wasn't there. Instead, they said they would call the property's shuttle service, so I waited in the lobby for about 30 minutes, and then, for some reason, I was given a taxi ticket and guided to a taxi. For those returning by public transportation like the Odoriko train, it might be better to arrange a taxi yourself. Also, the IKYU Diamond benefits don't seem to apply unless you mention them, so if you need them, it's better to assert yourself. (We didn't need them, so it wasn't a problem.)

Quietly and slowly
I was able to have a very relaxing stay. The food was a bit too much for me, but as reputed, it was delicious. The room had a small TV on the table, but I think it would be even better if it were neatly placed in the corner of the room so that the garden could be seen better. Thank you for your hospitality. I will visit again.
