In late autumn in Niseko, I experienced an unparalleled luxurious time at a hospitality-filled hotel nestled among beautifully yellow-tinted mountains. The kind staff, fascinating artworks, and delicious cuisine were all one-of-a-kind, creating the perfect accommodation designed for enjoying peaceful moments. During a morning walk, I had the chance to meet Mr. Grick, and just before check-out, a Long-tailed Tit appeared by the window—these lucky encounters made my stay unforgettable and turned this place into one I am truly glad to have visited. It is an exceptional accommodation that I would love to visit again.

A Wonderful Stay
This was my second stay. I have stayed at various Accommodations throughout the whole country, and this is one of the most memorable and wonderful Accommodations. The Room was filled with museum-like furnishings and a refined interior, and the amenities were thoughtfully provided in every detail, allowing me to truly relax throughout my stay. The view from the window was also very beautiful—so much so that I wanted to keep looking at it and lost track of time—and it was truly soothing. Each dish was carefully prepared and delicious, and I looked forward to every meal. Thank you very much. This is a special Accommodation that I would love to visit again.

An accommodation showcasing the charm of Hokkaido
I have stayed at all the luxury-class Onsen accommodations in Hokkaido, but SHIGUCHI stands out in every aspect. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were so perfect in taste and presentation that they left me speechless. I could subtly feel the incorporation of Ainu culture into the food, space, and art (without it feeling overdone), naturally blending Japanese and Western styles. It truly felt like an accommodation worthy of representing Hokkaido. This time, I stayed in the "Sora" room with two baths made of stone and wood. While I enjoy private open-air baths, summer nights often bring insects, so I chose a room with both an indoor bath and an open-air bath listed. However, since the open-air bath had a screen door installed, I could enjoy it at night without worrying about insects—a thoughtful touch that was truly impressive. Additionally, after 9:00 PM there are no staff on-site (though they can be contacted in emergencies). This new working style for Ryokan operations is something I found positive—it reflects care for both staff members and guests alike. It's ideal in my opinion. The price is certainly high-class even within Hokkaido; however, staying at SHIGUCHI is worth it even if you skip another accommodation once to save up for this experience. It’s an accommodation I can confidently recommend to friends as well!

You can enter another world.
This was my first stay at this accommodation. Although I had received directions in advance, I almost got lost and arrived slightly later than planned. Despite this, the staff greeted me upon arrival and helped carry my luggage. The reception is located in a building called Somoza, which also serves as a restaurant. After check-in and an introduction to the extensive exhibits, I was guided to a separate building—a renovated traditional house that served as my room. The view from Somoza is breathtaking, offering a panorama of pristine forests and a stream flowing through the valley—an extraordinary escape into another world. The sound of the stream was particularly soothing. On that day, there were only two groups of guests staying at the accommodation, with rooms on opposite sides of the same building due to pricing arrangements. In such cases, it would be appreciated if one group could be upgraded for better privacy. The room included a small stereo system; however, it felt out of place and cheap compared to the otherwise sophisticated decor and furnishings. While I usually enjoy music in my daily life, here I found silence—or even just birdsong or the sound of water—far more valuable than listening to music on such equipment. It would have been better if they had chosen an aesthetically pleasing Bluetooth speaker instead. Aside from this minor issue with decor consistency (including some kitchenware), everything else about the building and amenities was perfect. The refrigerator was stocked with complimentary drinks including alcohol, while toiletries like shampoo were high-quality products. Dinner began at 6 PM after gathering at Somoza for an explanation about its exhibits by staff members for each group before dining commenced. The meal featured creative French cuisine using primarily Hokkaido ingredients—each dish unique and stimulating without any overlap in flavors or textures—and spanned three hours without feeling tedious thanks to its leisurely pace and variety. I opted for Italian wine instead of pairing options but must note one disappointment: rather than serving steak as part of our meal’s meat course (which would highlight fresh local Hokkaido beef), they served braised meat instead—even though luxurious sauces accompanied it beautifully—it felt like wasted potential given how special fresh local meats are here! Breakfast offered both Japanese & Western-style choices alongside desserts; however slight improvements could enhance egg dishes further too! Lastly but importantly—the staff provided exceptional service throughout our stay while additional exhibit spaces housed separately are absolutely worth visiting!

I was healed.
I watched YouTube and made a Reservation. Among the different Hotels and Ryokans I stay at every month, this was the best stay. It was refreshing not to have a TV, and I was soothed by the wood stove. It was worth the 7.5-hour one-way trip by plane and JR. I also want to see the snowy scenery.

I had an experience beyond my expectations.
This time, I stayed at "Hi." Of course, I had expectations for the time in the room and the meals beforehand, but I was able to have a wonderful time that exceeded my prior expectations. The accommodation building harmonized everything present, including the spatial composition and materials of the building, furniture, furnishings, and art pieces. It also incorporated the majestic view of the Hokkaido forest visible from the window, creating a unified, elegant, and calm space. Thanks to such a space, I was able to relax for hours and indulge in deep thought. The cuisine used local ingredients and incorporated ancient ingredients and cooking methods. While the appearance and cooking methods seemed rare and innovative, the taste was somehow nostalgic and comforting, creating a very mysterious sensation. The paired wines included those from Niseko and Yoichi, and although they were all brands I had never tried before, they were as delicious as those from famous wine-producing countries like France, which was a new discovery. Additionally, before dinner on the first day, we received an explanation of the art in the gallery, where we could hear about the unique culture of Hokkaido, such as the Ainu, which was very intriguing as it was content we don't usually learn about. At the spa, not only massages but also efforts to relax the entire five senses, including sound and scent, were made, allowing me to have a highly satisfying time. Throughout all the time spent on-site, the thoughtfulness, attentiveness, and interesting conversations of the staff providing the service allowed me to have a very enjoyable time. The elements that make up SHIGUCHI not only allow you to enjoy each individually but also work together as a whole to mediate between the land of Hokkaido and the visitors. Although it was a short time, I felt a mysterious sensation as if I was blending into the land.
