A Hotel That Makes Your Best Stay Possible
I have stayed at this Hotel many times since it opened. It’s a favorite of mine, packed with charm. The interior features abundant Hida-sourced wood, creating a calm atmosphere where warmth and luxury are beautifully balanced. Whether in the lobby or the guest Rooms, it’s comfortable everywhere. The Onsen is also outstanding, with blue mosaic tiles in the baths. They are not only visually beautiful but also pleasant to the touch, making it easy to truly unwind. There is an additional fee, but I especially recommend the private bath with a spacious deck—an indulgent experience in a fully private setting. Above all, my greatest pleasure here is dinner. This time, Perla caviar was served as an amuse-bouche—presented in the tin—which genuinely surprised me with its extravagance. From there, the course continued with spear squid, lobster, and Hida beef; every dish showcased superb ingredients along with the chef’s skill and sense of style. Each plate was moving in its own way—it was simply a wonderful time. The breakfast buffet is equally impressive. From local Takayama specialties to salmon marinade and their signature Hida beef curry, everything is so well executed that it hardly feels like typical Hotel breakfast—I was completely satisfied from the morning. Most memorable of all is the hospitality of the staff. Not only do they respond kindly and attentively whenever you need help, they also greet even casual travel conversations with warm smiles that make you feel truly welcome. If you stay here, I encourage you to chat with them—you’ll appreciate this Hotel even more. Room quality, Onsen, dining, and service—few Hotels deliver such a high level across every aspect. And despite that excellence, the Accommodation Fee is surprisingly reasonable; considering what you receive, the value for money is exceptional. For me, it’s one of my absolute favorite Hotels in Japan—one I will happily return to again and again.

It was a wonderful trip for our whole family.
From April 2 to 4, I stayed in a Privilege Double Room with my wife and our eldest son, who is turning three. I was originally scheduled to come to Takayama on business, so we extended our stay and did some sightseeing as well. The Room was small but practical and easy to use. I had requested a bed guard in advance, and it was properly set up. We were initially informed that the open-air bath in the large public bath would be unavailable, but on the day it seemed the issue had already been fixed, and we were able to enjoy the starry sky. Breakfast had a good variety, so even after two nights we didn’t get tired of it. The rice was delicious. We were also able to use the lounge as a Room benefit; it’s available from 14:00 to 18:00 and is perfect for an aperitif before dinner. It felt almost like traveling abroad—most guests were foreigners. Nothing particularly bad happened, but there were a few things that felt slightly different from what Japanese guests may be used to. With that in mind, here are some points I noticed. The private bath was great, but since it will often be used by more than one person, wouldn’t it be better to have one more washing station? Many Japanese people typically rinse their bodies before entering the tub as a matter of habit, but I saw several foreign guests getting into the large public bath without rinsing first. Adding another washing station in the private bath could help prevent this as well. Also, if guests are expected to bring towels from their Room to the large public bath area, it would be helpful if something like a dedicated basket or bag were provided in the Room. Carrying towels as-is feels a bit uncomfortable. I appreciate that there are no plastic amenities with SDGs in mind; however, mineral water being provided only in glass bottles with stoppers makes it extremely inconvenient to carry around. Unless this is intentionally designed so guests can’t take it out (to reduce consumption), how about using aluminum bottles instead? Regarding breakfast: even if you arrive before opening time to avoid crowds, foreign guests gather irregularly without forming a line, and people who arrive later sometimes enter first—which doesn’t feel very fair. I would have liked staff to manage this more clearly. Also, while both the menu selection and taste are good overall, perhaps due to how items are arranged there isn’t a clear flow of traffic around the buffet area; congestion builds easily and movement tends to stall. Some adjustments seem necessary. And if possible, offering takeaway coffee (and similar drinks) might also be nice. Since this is largely an Hotel for international travelers these points may be somewhat unavoidable—and I understand you may want to keep extra costs down—but I hope these can serve as suggestions for future improvements.

This was my second stay.
The Hotel I stayed at last year and became my favorite. The quiche I ordered additionally during the welcome drink service was delicious. The rooftop open-air bath was very relaxing, and I used it in the morning as well. Despite rising prices, the breakfast quality has not declined compared to last year, and each dish was carefully prepared. I was also comforted by the hospitality of the female restaurant staff. Once again, it was a very satisfying stay at the Hotel. Next time, I would like to enjoy bar time at the Hotel!

Not recommended for Japanese guests.
A hotel for inbound travelers. Even at one-third of the price, it is not worth using. Rooms with inconvenient facilities, poor-quality amenities, and no bath are only suitable for those who don't mind these issues. I will never use a hotel with the name Mercure again and cannot recommend it to anyone.

Looking forward to the future.
Honestly, it's not a bad hotel at all. In fact, it’s a wonderful accommodation that enhances your stay in Hida Takayama. However, my honest impression is that the evaluation of this hotel can change drastically depending on what you expect from your stay. Conveniently located just a few minutes' walk from Takayama Station with an easy-to-find location. From the entrance to the lobby, throughout the facility and into the rooms, it’s filled with aesthetic charm that seems appealing to international guests and reflects Hida Takayama's unique style. The chairs in the room made from local Hida Takayama materials were especially impressive and beautiful. Most of the staff are foreigners, likely for accommodating international guests; however, they are always friendly, polite, kind, and their Japanese is perfect—no issues at all. That said, I feel there’s some imbalance in terms of regulations or systems within the facility. The front desk provides very attentive service to each guest individually but takes time for each interaction. As a result, there’s often quite a wait time without any acknowledgment for those waiting in line—it seems like they don’t notice us standing there waiting. When I went to pick up keys for the private onsen despite having a set time slot booked beforehand—I still had to wait longer than expected which was disappointing. A simple “Please have a seat while you wait” or “Are you in a hurry?” would have made such situations much smoother—I guess I’m just an impatient Japanese person! About private onsen: It is available for an additional fee and includes skincare products along with two bottles of Perrier water as part of its amenities package—but no other toiletries like body towels or toothbrushes provided unless brought directly yourself (which wasn’t clearly communicated). Ironically though—they did provide towels even though we were told otherwise beforehand leading us unnecessarily bringing extra ones ourselves! (laughs) Additionally accessing these reserved baths requires going down towards reception area first-hand collecting necessary keys etc., unlike public baths where wearing indoor slippers/clothing suffices instead making things inconvenient overall process-wise during transitions between spaces unnecessarily complicated compared against simpler alternatives potentially implemented better Very clean and satisfying!
The place was very clean and excellent. The breakfast had a wide variety of dishes and was delicious. I would love to visit again if I have the chance. However, there is no parking lot, and the affordable ones are far away, so it would be nice if nearby parking offered more reasonable rates.

Comfortable Hotel
I stayed for one night while visiting Shirakawa-go and Takayama. The location was great, the hotel was clean, and the price was very reasonable, making it a highly satisfying stay. Although it was a No Meals Included plan, the Onsen, especially the open-air bath where you can gaze at the sky, was incredibly relaxing. Since it was a hot day, I really appreciated the ice service at the bar on the first floor. If I had to mention something, there was only one chair in the room and not many chairs available in the lobby for relaxing. Parking nearby is expensive, so I parked at a station parking lot across from the train tracks about 7 minutes away on foot. Highly recommended hotel!

Stayed in a Privileg...
Stayed in a Privilege Room. The facility was new and clean, with good value for money including dinner, breakfast, and lounge benefits. However, the staff service was disappointing. While their English skills seem well-developed due to the majority of foreign guests, their use of polite Japanese language felt unrefined. During dinner menu explanations, some staff appeared overly casual or shy—perhaps aiming for friendliness—but this is not a hostel or guesthouse setting, so it fell short of expectations. In the lounge area, staff chatter echoed throughout; much of it seemed unrelated to work and lacked decorum—possibly reflecting a younger team with a casual "resort job" vibe? When additional charges occurred during our stay and we opted for room billing after credit card registration as required, there were delays in processing requests despite prior arrangements. At checkout time, no mention was made about pending payments until later when retrieving luggage; we were approached as if attempting to avoid payment. Considering signed receipts were already on file from our end—shouldn't this have been handled automatically upon initial registration? While perhaps we could have double-checked ourselves too—it felt unsettling that no apology came from their side while treating us suspiciously instead... Is this approach common when dealing confidently with international guests? Breakfast lived up to its reputation for taste but lacked consistent service quality; some staff cleared plates without acknowledgment or eye contact—suggesting gaps in training standards overall. Dinner was average: appetizers were creative yet mains like lobster (small) & Hida beef rump (tough) left something desired both flavor-wise & presentation-wise—not exceeding price expectations here either! On brighter notes though desserts impressed alongside delicious original cocktails available via extra orders. In summary: perhaps fair value considering costs involved though experiences reflect typical challenges faced within inbound-focused international hotel chains today!

5 nights in Takayama
I stayed at a different accommodation every day due to my lack of planning and ended up feeling that I wouldn't revisit this place. 1. The room wear had a terrible smell. (Upon checking, there were reviews about this issue from quite some time ago.) Perhaps it's because they are stored in poorly ventilated drawers in the small room? 2. The outdoor bath in the large public bath had sand at the bottom, making it rough to step on. Additionally, the bath mats were soaking wet. (There were also previous reviews suggesting explanations for foreign guests on how to use the baths properly.) 3. No cleansing products available. While there should be makeup removers from the same line, only one facial cleanser was provided in the large public bath area. 4. The refrigerator didn’t cool properly (as mentioned in other reviews). I was also bothered by train noises (though infrequent) and duct sounds from upper floors. The building is modern and photogenic, so it might suit those looking for such aesthetics. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for those seeking practical accommodation benefits. Additional Notes: At check-in, I was told, "As a Diamond Member benefit... but since you made a same-day reservation, no benefits apply." This shocked me as it was my first time hearing such a statement—I already knew this well and hadn’t even asked about it! Starting with negativity felt unnecessary; they could have just not mentioned it at all. Also: "Where did you park your car?"—what was the purpose of this question? Why did I need to explain myself? Signing various agreements despite prepayment... It felt unnecessarily long and exhausting!

Recommended Hotel with High Cost Performance Near the Station
Close to Takayama Station with excellent access to tourist spots, this accommodation offers great value for money. While there is no parking on-site, there are plenty of parking options nearby, so it’s not an issue. The rooftop Onsen is spacious, clean, and very relaxing. It would have been perfect if a sauna was available as well. I chose the plan with lounge access, but unfortunately, the limited hours made it difficult to fully utilize. Extending access to include the 5 PM to 9 PM time slot would be appreciated.

Bathroom Rules
The room was beautiful and stylishly coordinated with furniture unique to Takayama, which was very nice. However, I had an unfortunate experience. As mentioned in the May review, it concerns the rules of the public bath. Some Asian travelers went straight from the changing area to the bath without washing, and there were five adults together. They also left wet towels carelessly on the dresser when they left. We kindly request that you provide clear etiquette and rules in languages such as Chinese, Korean, and English for better understanding.

Hot Takayama, but such a fun experience!
At the end of June, we went on a two-day trip to Hida. It was very hot, but we enjoyed delicious Hida beef and had a great time strolling around the town. We chose this hotel based on reviews saying it was clean and had a delicious buffet. It was close to the station, and the room was lovely—definitely the right choice. The only downside was that there was no ice machine. On such a hot day, I wanted something cold to drink, but even the fridge didn’t cool enough, which was disappointing. Since there is an onsen available, rooms only have showers—which is understandable. The onsen itself was clean and relaxing; however, elderly guests or small children should be cautious as the floor can be slippery. The nightwear provided is loose-fitting and comfortable—great! It would have been even better if lotion or moisturizer were available in the room. The buffet offered a wide variety of dishes and everything tasted amazing! The highlight for me was definitely the Hida beef curry—it was exceptional!

Exceptional satisfaction. Excellent transportation access.
Stayed for a two-night, three-day training session with 11 companions. Here are my impressions in order: Guest Rooms & Amenities The rooms were clean and equipped with everything necessary. The pajamas provided were the most comfortable I’ve ever experienced. Like the Mercure in Nara where I stayed last year, there was no bathtub, but an Onsen was available. Service There were few Japanese staff members, so check-in took some time. However, their earnest efforts made it bearable. Onsen & Bath There is a bath on the top floor. For those who find showers insufficient, head to the top floor! Facility Everything needed was well-prepared. Meals I had breakfast twice during my stay. It was extremely delicious! While not offering a wide variety of options, every dish served was exceptionally tasty. All of my companions were thoroughly satisfied. A return visit is certain—thank you!

I had a relaxing time.
I stayed alone and found the Room very comfortable. The bath was also pleasant. The meals were delicious and filling. Although the dishes are usually served slowly, I requested them to be served all at once as I needed to return to my Room early for personal reasons. They accommodated my request promptly, allowing me to return on time. I also used the lounge and was very satisfied with it. However, while the Hotel is conveniently located near the station, there is no parking lot or partnership with nearby parking facilities. I researched in advance and parked about a 5-minute walk away. Parking near the Hotel is expensive.

Bathing Etiquette
The room was clean, and the view was excellent, making for a pleasant stay. The only disappointment was that some foreign guests entered the bath without rinsing beforehand, which is uncomfortable for Japanese people. Although it’s a great bath, I didn’t feel like using it the next morning. I hope Japanese bathing etiquette can be communicated and respected.

It was a wonderful trip to remember.
I used to stay at Mercure Ginza regularly, so I was surprised to find one in Takayama. We stayed here for our wedding anniversary, and we were touched by the "Happy Anniversary" decorations and the greeting card. Our room faced the train tracks, but since it was on the 6th floor, we quickly got used to it and had no trouble sleeping. The view from the balcony was also lovely. The breakfast buffet was very delicious. I've stayed at other Accor Group accommodations like Sofitel Ueno and The Cypress Nagoya; compared to those, rooms in the Mercure series are smaller but designed efficiently. That said, I think having a closet would be a nice addition. If I may point out something minor: there were small bones in the salmon rice served at breakfast, so I couldn't eat it. However, all other menu items were excellent. One more thing—while changing after my bath, someone already dressed in pajamas started taking photos of the bath area. It caught me off guard! Most people were soaking in the tub at that time, so likely only blurry outlines of heads appeared due to steam—but this is more of a guest etiquette issue rather than something within hotel control. Overall, it was truly an excellent stay—thank you very much!

The perfect hospitality for your birthday! A memorable stay in Takayama
I stayed at Mercure Hida Takayama to celebrate my birthday, and I was deeply touched by the warm hospitality of the staff, making it a truly special stay! From the moment I checked in, their polite and friendly service made me feel comfortable. The room was spacious, clean, and had a modern atmosphere that felt very relaxing. What delighted me the most were the surprises: a birthday cake, complimentary drinks at the bar, and a late check-out gift. It was truly unforgettable hospitality. The hotel's location is excellent as well—conveniently within walking distance of Takayama's tourist spots. This hotel is perfect for birthdays or special occasions and is also an ideal place for treating yourself to a rewarding trip. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you for allowing early check-in.
The day before, I had planned to leave Gero early in the morning and take a day trip to Okuhida Onsen-go, but unfortunately, it was closed on Wednesdays. I arrived at Takayama Station shortly after 1 PM. Planning to visit the Takayama Tourism Convention Association and stop by a pharmacy due to a bruise and sprain on my arm from a fall the previous day, I went to drop off my luggage. At the front desk, I was told that my room was ready and that I could check in, which was very much appreciated. Mercure Hotel used to have locations in Tokyo Takanawa and Odaiba where I stayed or dined with my late wife. Their Western cuisine was among the best even within Tokyo. This held true for their Bali location as well; their lunch there was excellent. However, it seems that recently—even including newly opened Grand Mercure hotels—the quality of meals has significantly declined. In the past, something as simple as an apple Danish paired with coffee made for a satisfying breakfast; now such offerings are nowhere to be seen. Additionally, while they seem committed to reducing plastic products—similar to Starbucks' paper straws—it feels inconvenient. The issue of plastic polluting oceans arises because some countries dispose of it carelessly; in places like Japan where waste is incinerated properly, this effort seems meaningless. It comes across as hypocritical at best.

Most guests were international visitors due to the season. The lounge access included a welcome drink, but unlike the lounges in Munakata or Sapporo Odori Park, it was served at a bar without any snacks, which was disappointing (we ordered an appetizer platter for an additional charge). Additionally, the bar staff seemed inattentive; it took time for them to notice guests wanting to order drinks. Even international guests struggled to get their welcome drinks noticed. We had to go directly to the bar counter each time we wanted additional drinks (though this is less of an issue if you stay at the counter). Breakfast offered a wide variety of options and was enjoyable. While other Mercure Hotels like Munakata and Sapporo Odori Park provided sparkling wine with breakfast, Takayama only offered soft drinks. However, there was only one coffee machine available, occasionally causing delays as people waited for their turn.

I stayed for one night on the first day of Silver Week. It was very close to Takayama Station and convenient. The large public bath had two open-air baths and one indoor bath, and it was very clean and nice. The water pressure of the shower was also strong, which I liked. Although you had to bring your own bath towel, small towels were provided, which was convenient. I would like to use it again when I visit Takayama.

The bed was good.
We stayed with three people using a double bed and an extra bed. The edges of the bed were sturdy, and even when the person next to me turned over, the vibrations did not resonate. There was a part where the ceiling was low, which felt a bit oppressive, and since the desk was just a small round table, I had trouble finding a place to put things. It's nice that there is a large public bath, but the room only had a shower. However, the water pressure was good, and the shower room was clean, making it comfortable to use. I think it falls into the low-price category, so I would like to use it again when I come to Hida-Tateyama. The hotel does not have a parking lot, but there is a large private parking lot nearby. It was 2,900 yen for one night (18:00 to the next 12:00).
