    A serene Ryokan for adults

    We stayed for one night and two days. After passing Kurokawa Onsen, the Accommodation appeared quietly tucked away. Inside was very clean with an elegant atmosphere. The Room had tatami flooring and a bright, stylish design. It seemed everyone was spending a relaxing time in their Rooms. The open-air bath was spacious, and no matter when we went in, we had it all to ourselves—such a luxurious time. The water quality was excellent, and we were very satisfied. The meals were well balanced and truly delicious. Since it is not in an Onsen town, this Accommodation is recommended for those who want to rest and relax at the Accommodation.

    The Best Onsen Accommodation

    This was truly the best Onsen Accommodation. Since there are only a few guest Rooms, I assumed the large public bath would be small, but I was surprised that the open-air bath was much larger than I imagined. With only 9 Rooms, it was often empty, so I could soak and relax at my own pace. As for the Room, the garden was absolutely amazing. I wished I could have spent all day on the veranda. The in-room bath felt more like a semi open-air bath than an indoor one; with its large windows, it really felt like an open-air bath. It’s hard to imagine anything topping this. The meals weren’t overly filling, and you could tell each dish was carefully prepared. For dinner, I expected to have the Akaushi lava-grilled beef shown on your website, but instead we were served Akaushi roast beef. It was delicious so I’m happy with it, but I had been looking forward to grilling it myself and having it served like a steak—so maybe next time! I’ll do my best so I can come back again (lol).

    We enjoyed the utmost tranquility and peace of mind.

    A small, single-story Accommodation. You can often hear Japanese bush warblers singing from the open-air bath. A gentle breeze stirs, and the leaves rustle in the trees—bringing a profound sense of happiness. Both dinner and breakfast are well-balanced, with satisfying flavors and a wide variety of dishes. The staff were also happy to chat about many things within reason (which I really appreciated). I don’t live amid constant hustle and bustle, but this truly feels like another world. Thank you very much.

    Golden Week Family Trip to Kumamoto

    We visited Kumamoto for a family trip during Golden Week 2026. We traveled for three nights, and for the first night we stayed at Shirakawa Onsen Kashoan. In a word, it is a wonderful Accommodation. The Facilities are spotless, each dinner and breakfast is prepared with great care, and above all, the staff’s hospitality was exceptional—our whole family was truly satisfied with our stay. We travel often, but this is an Accommodation that made me want to write a Review for the first time in quite a while. I’d like to share a few memorable photos. The first day was sunny, but the next day it rained. Even so, the Accommodation in the rain had a different atmosphere from a clear day and felt deeply relaxing. I’m posting only a few photos of the meals, but every dish was carefully made; both presentation and flavor were excellent, and we enjoyed them along with delicious drinks. This time we couldn’t make it to Takachiho Gorge because it was during Golden Week, so when we visit Kyushu again, this is an Accommodation we would love to stay at once more. Thank you very much.

    Disappointing dinner.

    The Room, service, and Onsen were great. However, dinner felt overly elaborate in its sauces and cooking methods, and a few dishes didn’t suit our taste. Since breakfast was delicious, it was disappointing that dinner didn’t meet the same standard.

    We had a very satisfying stay.

    I chose this Accommodation for the second night of my solo trip to Kyushu. When I first entered the Room, I was surprised by how spacious it was and how high the ceiling was. Everything was thoroughly cleaned, and I had a very comfortable stay. The Onsen was relaxing, and the meals I especially looked forward to exceeded my expectations in both variety and taste—I was completely satisfied. The staff were also very courteous, making it an excellent stay overall. I would like to visit again if I have the opportunity.

    All good.

    The Room is new and comes with a private garden, so you can relax after enjoying the semi-open-air Onsen bath in your guest room. The meals offer a wide variety of dishes and taste great, making for a very satisfying experience. The staff are friendly, and even on my solo trip as an older man, I had a wonderful time.

    Exquisite Kaiseki Cuisine

    Dissatisfied

    In the bathroom, there was hair—apparently from a previous guest—caught in the drain in clumps you could pick up. Also, the shower water pressure was very poor, and the temperature was inconsistent, alternating between hot water and cold water. In addition, it was a special Room called “Kiku,” but the courtyard was very small and felt stifling. There was hair scattered on the futon as well; overall, it felt unclean.

    Very satisfied.

    I was debating between Kurokawa Onsen and this accommodation, but choosing this one was the right decision. The staff were kind and spoke gently, and the accommodation itself was very quiet and relaxing. The room was clean, the food portions were more than enough, and everything tasted delicious—I was very satisfied. What disappointed me was that the large public bath was very cold, making it hard to get out of the tub, and there were many insects floating in the open-air bath, which made it difficult to enjoy. However, after bathing, my body stayed warm for a long time, which I appreciated. If I have another chance to visit that area again, I would love to stay at this accommodation once more.

    It was the best stay.

    This is my first time leaving a review on IKYU. I have visited various accommodations across the whole country, but I was truly amazed by the quality at this price. The hot spring was excellent, the food was wonderful, and all the staff were lovely. My son usually doesn't eat pre-made food, but since the dishes here were carefully handmade, he ate happily! We are very grateful for being able to spend such a happy time as a family. We will definitely visit again, so thank you in advance!

    Exceptional Hospitality

    The meals were exceptional.

    We chose Kashoan for our stay because of its excellent reviews and the promise of a peaceful experience with its limited number of rooms. The room was thoroughly cleaned, allowing us to enjoy a comfortable stay. The private bath in the room was spacious, and the silky texture of the hot spring water made us use it multiple times. One downside was that only one set of bath towels and towels per person was provided, which we found insufficient. Two sets would have been ideal. The dinner portions were generous, with fresh ingredients and exceptional seasoning—truly delightful. Breakfast tasted wonderful as well; however, the amount of rice provided wasn’t enough for two people like us. We headed straight to the public bath after check-in since we had read reviews praising its outdoor bath. Unfortunately, there were quite a lot of insects floating in it; although we used a net to remove them, their presence remained noticeable. The staff's hospitality was outstanding—they greeted us by name upon arrival at the dining area, which showed they remembered our faces and names—a pleasant surprise! My husband especially loved dinner and expressed his utmost satisfaction with it. Although we weren’t blessed with good weather this time around, we look forward to returning for another visit. This is truly a wonderful accommodation!

    Accommodation for a Quiet Stay

    This accommodation is located about a 5-minute drive from Route 442 near Kurokawa Onsen. Surrounded by forests and mountains, it offers a peaceful and quiet stay. The rooms have been renovated, providing a clean and comfortable environment. Sitting on the deck chairs facing the courtyard, the greenery and blue sky were incredibly soothing. The open-air bath in the large public bath had a unique charm, and combined with the indoor bath in the room, we fully enjoyed the onsen experience. This accommodation is highly recommended for those who want to enjoy onsen at their leisure and have a secluded stay.

    I believe this is an accommodation with good cost performance.

    This accommodation, highly rated on IKYU.com, was chosen for a stay during a visit to Shirakawa Onsen to experience the reasons behind its reputation. The tea and sweets offered at check-in were satisfactory. Although the facility is a compact, small-scale ryokan without special spaces like lounges, the lobby provides coffee service and magazines, ensuring convenience. The room we stayed in was part of the newly renovated building and featured a well-maintained courtyard garden that created a very comfortable atmosphere. Regarding the bath facilities, the large open-air onsen was pleasant; however, there were two drawbacks. First, the water pressure of the shower decreased when using hot water. While there was a note explaining that it takes time for warm water to flow properly, improving this would enhance comfort. Second, better maintenance of the slope visible from inside the open-air bath could improve its appeal further. While one side is well-maintained, weeds growing on another slope detract from relaxation when soaking in the bath. Proper landscaping would significantly elevate its overall impression. As for meals, both dinner and breakfast were satisfactory overall; however, one minor disappointment was that breakfast rice portions felt insufficient compared to other dishes served alongside it. Although refills were available upon request, having slightly more rice initially provided would have been preferable. Overall, I found this accommodation lived up to its reputation with excellent cost performance value as expected from reviews online—definitely worth considering again if visiting Shirakawa Onsen in future stays!

    Thank you for hosting us and taking great care of us during our stay. The service provided by the international staff was excellent, and their warm hospitality was truly remarkable. The thoughtfully prepared meals were both visually appealing and delicious. The baths were very relaxing, and we enjoyed them multiple times. However, overall, considering the price, it felt a bit high for the experience. A slightly lower price point would make it perfect.

    I had a relaxing time. Completely satisfied.

    I had a relaxing solo trip. Choosing the plan with breakfast and dinner was the right decision. Each dish was carefully prepared and very delicious. It was truly quiet, and the Room was close to the open-air bath, allowing me to relax without much walking. The staff at the Ryokan were also very kind.

    Not possible.

    I usually stay at accommodations priced between 30,000 to 40,000 yen. This time, I chose this highly-rated accommodation on IKYU for my first visit. However, I was deeply disappointed and frustrated by the poor construction of the building. At this price range, it felt more like a basic facility. The cheap wood materials, furnishings, and fittings were unacceptable. It seems as though the pricing is set to recover reconstruction costs—unbelievable. I cannot agree with those who have given high ratings here. That said, I must note that the staff members—the woman at the front desk, a young trainee gentleman, and another gentleman from Taiwan—were all very pleasant and professional. To the owner: please reconsider your pricing or renovate your facility immediately.

    You can enjoy delicious cuisine and Onsen.

    It was a very satisfying stay. The staff provided attentive service, maintaining just the right distance to ensure a comfortable experience. The food was wonderful and very delicious, so I will include some photos. The onsen is sourced from a natural spring, allowing you to adjust the temperature yourself. The atmosphere of the open-air bath was excellent, allowing for complete relaxation of both body and mind. I think it's rare to find a property of this quality at this price.

    It was excellent!!!

    Many people may choose Kurokawa Onsen because it is famous, but this was a hidden property where you can enjoy a private onsen feeling, just a 5-minute drive away. Surrounded by tranquility, it offered a warm and sophisticated space, and above all, the staff's attention to detail made it an excellent property. The onsen is sourced directly from the spring and is also available in the room, but first, you should experience the open-air bath. The fresh air and comfortable spacious onsen will relieve your travel fatigue. After bathing, enjoy complimentary drinks provided in your room—beer, soft drinks, mineral water—which show thoughtful consideration. All rooms have tatami flooring with underfloor heating during this season to keep you warm from your feet up. No worries about getting cold after bathing. Dinner was wonderful from start to finish for both eyes and palate satisfaction with delicious dishes that are more than enough to eat. After dark, I enjoyed the bath in my room—a very spacious tub offering a luxurious space. Although it's primarily sourced directly from the spring without additives or heating adjustments (kakenagashi), you can add water if you prefer different temperatures. It felt so good that I bathed multiple times. In front of reception there are coffee makers and ice machines available for free use. Although it was only an overnight stay of two days one night duration; within its slow-paced flow time spent here became blissful moments indeed! There are several types of rooms so I'd like try other ones too someday! Having used this place now found another must-visit again property! It was amazing!!! Thank You very much!

    I visited on a day when it wasn't crowded, so I was able to relax and enjoy my time. The bath is fed by a natural hot spring, and it's great that the large public bath is open until morning. The meals were delicious as well. I would like to use this place again.

    Shirakawa Onsen over Kurokawa Onsen

    My husband expressed a desire to visit Kurokawa Onsen, so we quickly changed our initial plan of visiting Ise Jingu for the New Year and made travel arrangements to Kurokawa Onsen. Due to the late start, we couldn't secure a reservation at Kurokawa Onsen and decided to stay at Kashoan in Shirakawa Onsen instead. Kashoan had a very calm atmosphere where we could truly relax and unwind. Perhaps because there are few guest rooms, everything was well-maintained, clean, and the service was excellent. As a result, our entire family felt that staying in Shirakawa was better than Kurokawa. The food was particularly outstanding; my husband praised it as the best he's ever had on any trip. Since it takes three hours by bus from both Kumamoto and Hakata, I thought this would be my first and last visit to Shirakawa Onsen in my life; however, Kashoan left such an impression that I would like to take the time to visit again.

    Very good property

    This was my first stay, and both the service and the room, as well as the bath, were excellent. I am grateful for the room upgrade! The towels in the room were so fluffy and impressive; where are they from? I would love it if you could sell them as souvenirs. As for four stars on meals, since it's a course meal, it can't be helped, but with cold dishes continuing in the first half, I started to crave something warm since I don't drink alcohol. Also, there was such a large amount of hot pot at the end that my stomach was bursting. The price is relatively high but it was a satisfying property.

    The Onsen, including the bath in the guest room, was very nice. Since there are few guest rooms, we could use the large public bath privately. The open-air bath with a garden was also nice. We didn't encounter many other people and were able to relax leisurely. The meals in the semi-private room were also good.

    Wonderful Ryokan

    The very courteous service warmed my heart. The Room was new and clean, and having two sinks was appreciated. The in-room bath and open-air bath with a view of the garden were so comfortable that I wished I could stay in them all the time if I had more time. There were few people, so the large public bath was almost private. Since there are no bath towels in the large public bath, you may be confused if you haven't read the instructions as you need to use one of the many hand towels available or bring a bath towel from your Room. The food exceeded expectations in taste. The presentation was also excellent, and both dinner and breakfast were more than satisfying dishes. It felt like a waste for just one night's stay. Thank you very much for taking care of us.

    I used it with my child. Hmm. It feels pretty ordinary. The Room is not bad, but it lacks a special feeling and cleanliness. The atmosphere of the bath is also somewhat lacking. It was a Plan without dinner, but the breakfast had similar seasoning overall, and even for someone like me who likes mild flavors, it felt bland, with nothing that made me think "delicious!" I felt that the customer service and the quality of the hot spring water were good, but at this price point with this content, I don't think I'll revisit or recommend it to acquaintances.

    We stayed with three people. They upgraded us to a room with a bath. The property was new and clean, and when we entered the room, there was a nice scent of wood. The food was delicious, and everyone at Stays was very kind. Even without the upgrade, I was very satisfied to be able to stay at this price. I would like to stay again.
