Packed with unique experiences you can only enjoy here.

This is a truly wonderful Accommodation, and its appeal is elevated even further by the cuisine and the Room. The private, standalone Room is beautifully designed, and having access to your own natural hot spring source is absolutely worth it. Above all, the owner-chef’s stories, irori hearth cooking, and passion are outstanding. We stayed for 2 nights and also enjoyed the duck hot pot, but having the irori meal on the first night made a huge difference in how deeply satisfied we felt. Hearing about the 2016 earthquake and the recovery since then—how it connects to today, along with the Accommodation’s history and philosophy—was deeply moving. The ingredients, attention to detail, how much time and effort goes into each dish, and even the connections with local people—all of these stories multiplied the value of our stay many times over. Of course, the ingredients and food themselves are exceptional. Every dish was something you can only experience here. Even the chef’s nostalgic dumplings were fun and delicious. Understanding more about each ingredient—and learning what went into it—made every dish satisfying beyond just taste alone. They are also very particular about sake; hearing the background stories and receiving recommendations was especially enjoyable for my husband (a big sake fan). He drank more than usual. They even told us where we could buy them locally, which made us feel their love for the region as well. It reminded us what it truly means to pay for real value. If you stay here, I highly recommend experiencing an irori meal—especially on your first night if you’re planning a Multiple Night Stay. All of the staff were pleasant as well; it’s family-run, and it was lovely that their son is in charge of coffee service too. Breakfast was also a luxury—enjoying charcoal-grilled dishes from early morning is not something you can easily experience elsewhere. Their commitment to rice is incredible; for the first time ever I felt I could eat rice just by itself because it was so good. That said, both breakfast and dinner are quite generous portions, so unless you have a big appetite it may be hard to finish everything—I think a smaller-portion Plan would be helpful too. I also learned for the first time how well French toast pairs with olive oil! It was a nice touch that our name was written at our parking space—many places leave you unsure where to park. The large bath area—with three different temperature baths—is fun as well, but this is an Accommodation where I’d love to relax in one of their detached Rooms again for at least two nights or more. With another earthquake having occurred in Kumamoto recently I can’t imagine what conditions are like there now, but I truly hope to visit again—and until then I want to recommend this place so that many others will come support them too."""

We had an amazing time—thank you so much. We’re truly grateful and deeply impressed.

Although I was worried about the earthquake’s impact, I decided to visit from Kumamoto Airport. Perhaps because a week had passed since the quake, I hardly noticed any effects and was able to stay with peace of mind. Above all, I was amazed by how delicious the meals were. Dinner featured duck hot pot, miso soup, and rice cooked in a traditional pot; breakfast included nori seaweed, natto, and French toast. Every dish felt heartfelt, and I ended up eating far more than I expected. The Onsen was just as described in advance and helped relieve my fatigue. It was a truly satisfying stay. Lastly, I asked about the period “.” after Seifuso’s name that had caught my attention. Despite all the hardships you have faced—including the earthquake—I was deeply moved to hear that it represents putting a “.” (period) on these hardships and creating a new Seifuso going forward. Thank you very much. If I have the chance, I would love to stay again.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

It was my first visit in a long time since the disaster, and it was a wonderful Accommodation. The meals were excellent—the venison shabu-shabu was very healthy and delicious, and breakfast was also superb. Above all, the hot spring water was great, the surrounding atmosphere was fantastic, and the staff’s thoughtful hospitality was outstanding.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen and the meals!

Jigoku Onsen Seifuso We enjoyed three different Onsen. For dinner, we ordered duck hot pot, which was delicious and very filling, so we couldn’t fully enjoy the white rice cooked in a traditional kamado stove. They kindly made rice balls for a late-night snack, and we ate them later in our Room. Breakfast was also delicious, and we ended up eating too much. The French toast for dessert was great as well. The staff’s hospitality was wonderful, and we were able to relax and enjoy a peaceful stay. Next time, we’d like to stay for several nights and take our time even more.

    It was excellent.

A beautifully renovated room that retains its historical beams, and the mixed Onsen "Suzume no Yu," now requiring clothing, continues to bubble up fresh water from the bottom. After day visitors leave, you can enjoy the quiet night and morning at Suzume no Yu—staying overnight is truly the only way to experience its charm. It was absolutely wonderful! The staff were kind, and the meals were delicious.

    Definitely worth a return visit!

Stayed overnight after visiting the autumn foliage at Takachiho Gorge. 【Onsen】 The onsen lived up to its reputation with an energizing water quality that was truly impressive. The strong sulfur scent typical of acidic springs and the smooth feeling on the skin afterward were exactly what you’d expect from a genuine onsen experience! However, there was no mud as seen in some photos, so those expecting it might feel a bit puzzled. 【Meals】 While the onsen is fantastic, the highlight here is undoubtedly the meals. The irori-style cuisine prepared by the owner-chef at the counter was absolutely exceptional. Not only was the food amazing, but also his stories and warm personality made for an unforgettable experience. It’s easy to see why this accommodation has so many repeat guests. Don’t miss out on their French toast for breakfast! 【Facility】 Perhaps due to seasonal factors, but the dressing room in the large communal bath felt quite cold as if heating wasn’t sufficient. It might be good to prepare accordingly. We stayed in a detached room, so we can’t comment on other rooms, but we would love to visit again if this room is available next time. Thank you!

A Wonderful Encounter Between Accommodation and Onsen

We thoroughly enjoyed the freshly prepared Onsen with different water qualities. We made sure to take our time to relax and enjoy the Onsen, and we look forward to visiting again. Dinner was accompanied by a talk from the head chef. We learned about the passion for local ingredients, important aspects of cooking, and stories of recovery after the Kumamoto earthquake, which taught us the significance of visiting this area.

    Attracted by the rev...

Attracted by the review claiming it to be the best onsen source in the world, I made a reservation. I thought it was by far the most amazing hot spring water among all the onsens I have stayed at so far. The water was incredibly rich and seemed very effective. The "Sparrow Onsen," where hot spring water bubbled up from gravel underfoot, truly felt like a genuine source spring. The meals were also excellent. Dinner featured wild boar hot pot, which was far more delicious than I had imagined, with no gamey taste at all—simply delightful. Breakfast was an enjoyable and tasty experience using an irori (traditional Japanese hearth) to cook fried eggs, salmon, and sausages. Although Kyushu is not easily accessible from here, I would love to stay again if given another opportunity!

Experience the power of nature with our constantly flowing natural hot spring!

I have traveled around the world, but this Onsen has the most powerful spring water I’ve ever experienced! The meals were filled with love in every bite, leaving me feeling completely energized. I felt like the combination of the Onsen and meals could cure any illness. I would love to stay here again when visiting Aso. Thank you very much!

    I had a relaxing stay.

This was my first stay at this accommodation. The detached room was perfectly sufficient, and the private bath in the room alone was very satisfying. The meals were extremely delicious and the portions were very generous. It is an accommodation I would love to stay at again.

It was comfortable even during summer.

I stayed for one night and two days. Located in the mountains, it was relatively cool, and the mornings and evenings were very pleasant. The Onsen experience in the early morning amidst untouched nature was exceptional. You can clearly hear the sounds of insects and birds, allowing you to relax and forget the hustle and bustle of city life. The meals were plentiful yet delicious, and the staff were kind, making for a comfortable stay.

I made a reservation for the onsen. Based on my past experiences, I didn’t expect much from the meals at accommodations focused on onsens, but I was pleasantly surprised. Both dinner and breakfast were very delicious, especially the French toast dessert at breakfast—it was exquisite. I learned that this accommodation suffered significant damage from the Kumamoto earthquake and subsequent heavy rains, leading to a "4-year closure." I can only imagine the immense effort it took to recover, and I deeply admire their perseverance. Although it’s far from here, I would love to stay again in the future.

    Ideal Accommodation

I am delighted to have found my ideal accommodation in my beloved Aso. Although the weather was not perfect, I enjoyed listening to the chirping of birds amidst the great outdoors, chatting with local people visiting for Onsen therapy, and soaking in the soothing lukewarm waters. Dinner was a delightful experience, spending nearly three hours enjoying intricate Irori-style cuisine while listening to the owner’s passionate and engaging stories. I couldn’t help but wonder how much time and effort went into preparing such an elaborate meal, savoring every bite with gratitude (though I must admit I ended up eating it all quite quickly because it was so delicious). The owner and staff were all incredibly kind and welcoming. My husband and I were completely captivated by this accommodation that offers everything—scenery, hot springs, food, and hospitality. Next time, we hope to enjoy a multiple night stay to fully indulge in both Irori-style cuisine and Kaiseki meals. While the maximum rating is 5 stars, for me it’s a perfect 10! We will definitely return again!

Both the meals and the Onsen offered a series of fresh and unique experiences.

The meals were absolutely fantastic. For the first night's dinner, we had venison shabu-shabu. Even though I was quite full, I didn’t feel any heaviness the next morning, likely because of the high-quality venison. The second night’s dinner featured irori-grilled dishes. The main dish was skewers grilled over charcoal, using plenty of local ingredients and prepared with great care. And the drinks kept flowing! The selection of sake was irresistible for sake lovers. Breakfast was also excellent. It was delicious and perfectly portioned, and making my own sunny-side-up egg added a fun touch. The freshly made French toast after breakfast felt like a luxurious treat you wouldn’t expect at an Onsen Ryokan. As for the Onsen, Suzume no Yu was outstanding. Soaking in baths with varying temperatures made me feel like I could stay there forever—and without feeling lightheaded! It was truly a one-of-a-kind Onsen experience. Unfortunately, due to this year’s record-early rainy season onset, we couldn’t fully enjoy Aso’s scenery this time around. I’m looking forward to visiting again during Kusasenri's most beautiful season!

    No return visits.

I have stayed at accommodations in this price range 3-4 times a year, but I felt that this accommodation was cheaper and better compared to others in the same price range. However, I wonder why the reviews are so good. The effort to recover from the earthquake must have been immense, but if you are not promoting it as part of recovery support, there are noticeable areas where cost-cutting is evident. - The pathways are unnecessarily long with many uneven surfaces and steps. - The front desk service is careless; there was no explanation about the room. - To reach rooms on the second floor of the main building, only steep stairs are available, which is very difficult for elderly guests. - The hallway leading to rooms has no heating and is cold; at least provide slippers for guests. - The changing area and washing stations in the onsen are extremely cold; one of two onsens has no heating or ineffective heaters, with windows left open where guests cannot close them themselves. - Slippery floors in the onsen have warnings that are hard to notice—this is very dangerous. - There’s no place to put used towels in the onsen area. - Amenities provided do not match what should be expected at this price range. - If check-out time for staying guests is 11:00 AM, day-use bath access should start after 11:00 AM at least. - If you’re presenting an outdoor bath style (rotenburo), please ensure visible areas are cleaned thoroughly—grass overgrown ruins the view. - Bath mats and toilet mats were dirty; toilets were not well-cleaned either. - Since walking outside from rooms to reach onsens takes time during colder seasons, thicker outerwear should be provided. - Towels and water bottles should be provided as two sets per person since towels feel too thin otherwise. Usually when visiting an onsen accommodation I would bathe around four or five times during a stay—but here I didn’t feel like bathing even once. Dining service also lacked attentiveness—being interrupted multiple times while eating by unnecessary comments or having plates taken away made it hard to relax. After dinner when given rice balls as night snacks placed directly onto trays we were told "please carry everything including tray" despite needing both hands occupied navigating uneven paths wearing geta sandals along steep stairs—it felt unsafe altogether. The futon bedding inside our room was too thin making sleep uncomfortable due being cold overnight. One positive note perhaps worth mentioning—the breakfast smoothies yogurt milk tasted delicious yet overall experience lacked thoughtful consideration throughout entire stay leaving impression improvements could easily begin without requiring significant costs involved currently wouldn’t recommend nor return again myself under present conditions

    Accommodation to Refresh Your Spirit

A unique onsen, delicious meals that are light on the stomach, a heartwarming story of recovery from the earthquake, charming traditional atmosphere combined with stylish facilities—everything was wonderful. Next time, I would love to try the Irori course and hear more stories from the owner. Each detail reflects a beautiful story and the heartfelt care of everyone at this accommodation. The French toast in the morning was especially delightful and energizing despite being so filling. I definitely want to visit again. Thank you very much!

As always, the hot spring was wonderful, and I had a relaxing time. However, the Facility seems to be getting a bit old, so it might be more comfortable if some renovations are made gradually. Also, it would be great to have a shelf in the shower area of the bath (in the detached section).

    Satisfying Breakfast

The main building, though old, is well-maintained and has a charming atmosphere, making for a comfortable stay. Dinner was wild boar hot pot, which was plentiful and filling; however, the flavor could have been more impactful to enhance the experience. In contrast, breakfast was satisfying as we enjoyed grilling salmon at our own pace over the hearth and serving ourselves warm miso soup. The final touch of French toast was delightful and delicious even after being full. One disappointment was that only tea was available in the Room; as a coffee lover, I missed having coffee since it’s something I’ve come to expect these days. As for the bathhouse, you need to step outside from the main building and walk up stairs or slopes, which might be challenging for elderly guests with mobility issues.

    Excellent!

Even if you search around the world, there may not be an Onsen where you can feel the earth's energy and recharge like Jigoku Onsen, Suzume no Yu. The food and hospitality were excellent! It has a bit of character, but it's a wonderful Stays.

The hot water is perfect. I stayed in a separate room, and even just the hot water in the room was satisfying. The meals are perfect. In my case, I was particularly impressed with the breakfast. Cooking by yourself at the hearth is fun, and everything, including the white rice, scores 100 points for taste. Additionally, the French toast and café au lait as dessert score 150 points. Speaking of which, the smoothies too!! I can recommend all of them without any exaggeration. Finally, a point of concern: it is located at the end of a relatively narrow mountain road, so those not confident in their driving should be cautious of oncoming traffic. There is a short staircase from the parking lot to the check-in counter, but you basically handle your own luggage. Considering the structure and amenities of the separate rooms, I thought this property might be marketed more towards generations younger than those in their 60s.

As always, it was a wonderful Stays.

This is my second stay. I stayed for two nights in a separate building, with the first night featuring robatayaki by the owner and the second night a kaiseki by his younger brother. First, regarding the onsen, the quality of the spring, the scent of the water, and the atmosphere are all impeccable. The room's bath is equally heavenly. The meals, as with the previous visit, were outstanding. Listening to the owner's witty talk while enjoying the grilled dishes and sake, and the kaiseki with the enjoyable explanations from the younger brother's wife, paired perfectly with sake. This comfort cannot be experienced elsewhere. It's worth visiting just for this. There are a couple of requests I would like to make: 1. The living room in the separate building is uncomfortable. A slightly larger and softer sofa would be appreciated. 2. There is a deck outside the window of the egg bath, and being able to relax there would double the onsen experience. Overall, it is truly a wonderful property. Above all, I am touched by the sight of the family and staff striving to bring joy to their guests, overcoming the significant damage from the Kumamoto earthquake. It is a highly recommended stay. Please do visit.

Everything was wonderful except for one thing.

The detached room is wonderful. The bath in the Room should be hot and strongly acidic for me, but the quality of the spring was good, and I ended up taking a bath many times. The meals were delicious, and I managed to finish that volume. Just one thing. I was happy to be close to Suzume no Yu, but I woke up at night due to the smell of sulfur. I thought it would be even better if the ventilation in the Room could be improved. I want to take it more slowly next time.

    A solitary inn

I didn't expect it to be so high up in the mountains, as I drove a rental car from the main road into the mountain path and kept climbing through the forest. So, I was a bit tense until around check-in. What melted that tension was first the (bath) and then the (meal & sake). The room key was a four-digit code specified by the property, and I literally mumbled the numbers in my head as I went to the bath. The bath was quite wild, with a unique spring quality. Here, I thought, "Oh, this is nice." Next, the dinner seating was like a fireplace table with a simmering pot of Kyoto duck, which was delicious. "The meal is really great." The decisive factor was the delightful and enjoyable sweets & coffee on the terrace outside, where you can savor the feeling of the great outdoors after breakfast. The mountain road on the way back wasn't so bad either, although it was even wilder when I mistakenly went in the opposite direction at first. It was a property with a gradually charming taste.

Mistaken for a rustic luxury Ryokan

I visited for the first time with preconceived notions through an IKYU Review. I learned from a local pamphlet that they issue annual passes to encourage daytime onsen visitors. A corner of the room had insufficient soundproofing, and I was astonished by the loud voices of group guests gathering in one room and chatting late into the night. Incidentally, it was the first time I found an onsen property with a signboard like the one in the photo. The quality of the spring and breakfast exceeded my expectations. "Good medicine tastes bitter," and I believe that even a critical review from an IKYU Diamond member can be beneficial, so I decided to post this.
