I felt relaxed in the lovely garden.
The garden was lovely, and we really enjoyed our walk. It was quiet and relaxing. We stayed in the Kinko storehouse Accommodation. Although you can’t see outside from the Room, the cute sliding door that rattles as it opens added charm, and we relaxed on the blue sofa. If you have small children, the stairs may be a bit hazardous. The Room mixes old and new elements, but because the original design has been respected, there were a few unexpected protrusions. The meals were excellent—so delicious! We were very satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. Given how good the food was, we felt the price was very reasonable. We also appreciated the fireworks after dinner. Since there are hardly any lights around, the fireworks looked even more magical. It made for a wonderful summer holiday. Thank you very much.

I’d love to visit again in a different season.
The stylish, delicious French dinner and the breakfast—traditional Japanese cuisine full of Yamagata’s local flavors—were both very satisfying. Both the manager and the chef were truly hospitable, and even in the quiet atmosphere we enjoyed warm interactions with people, making it a wonderful time. I also felt it would be nice to have services such as a Shuttle Service from Nagai Station. The Room was spacious, chic inside the kura storehouse, and the blend of old traditional house charm with stylish interior design made us feel truly indulged. I would love to visit again in autumn to enjoy the garden’s beautiful fall foliage. Thank you very much.

An Accommodation you’ll want to return to
Your hospitality was wonderful. We truly appreciated the generous complimentary sake. My wife was very happy. The Room was clean and comfortable. You also recommended the Haguro-san Five-Story Pagoda for sightseeing, and our whole family was very satisfied. Next time, we would like to visit in winter. Thank you very much for everything!

NIPPONIA, the fourth one
An Accommodation with no clock or TV—perfect for a digital detox (Wi-Fi is available). There’s a lounge where you can truly relax, and it feels like being freed from the busyness of everyday life. All the snow had already melted, so it wasn’t too cold and was easy to walk around, but I would have loved to see a snowy landscape too. As you’d expect from a renovated Hotel in a cold region, there are two heaters! It had been ages since I’d seen heating that isn’t air conditioning. The warmth is on another level—and it felt nostalgic as well. The bath is not an Onsen, but there is a hinoki (cypress) bath that smells wonderful. Bath salts were provided to help you warm up, and I felt nice and toasty afterward. About the meals: Breakfast was a healthy Japanese set with lots of side dishes. The rice was delicious too—just what you’d expect from Yamagata! The appetizers at dinner were beautifully arranged—around 10 items on a round plate—and enjoyable even just to look at. It’s great that they explain each dish, but it would be even better if there were a simple note like “Today’s Menu,” so you can anticipate how many more courses are coming. Since we chose the pairing Plan, I found myself sipping while thinking about how much to save for the next dish (laugh). About the drinks: Even though this is an area known for sake and wine, it was disappointing that both the red and white wines were from California (I understand sparkling may be harder—this one was Spanish cava). I’m not very into classic Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay these days, which made me want to enjoy Yamagata wines even more. It’s not that California wine is bad at all—but I’d love it if there were two options each for red and white so guests could choose. Since we’re here anyway, I want to enjoy local production for local consumption too.

Second stay
Although it’s not easy to reach by public transportation, I came back because I wanted to spend another wonderful time here. I was happy to see the staff member who took care of us last time again! It’s no exaggeration to say I came to see her—she truly loves this Accommodation. There were more amenities than last time, and I had a very comfortable stay. It seems the chef has changed, but the food was still delicious. Recommended for those who want a quiet stay. The building is also well worth seeing! It’s beautifully maintained and truly impressive.

It was amazing, to say the least.
We stayed in the most popular Room this time. A Ryokan that makes great use of a kura storehouse set within part of a rural home. There were some gaps, and the door was heavy and a bit wobbly, but the atmosphere was fantastic. We had dinner at the separate restaurant building, and it was delicious with excellent pairings. If I had to say one thing, I would have appreciated an explanation of the menu and the paired drinks. Still, that warm, homey feel is very Yamagata-like, which I loved. The portions may feel a little small for some people. Despite the limited space, we unexpectedly enjoyed quite a snowy view. The scenery was mysterious and truly beautiful. The staff were also kind—overall, this is an Accommodation we definitely want to visit again. It would be helpful if you could have the key for the safety box ready (just kidding). Thank you for taking care of us.

Stayed at Akane no Y...
Stayed at Akane no Yashio with family at the end of June. The view of the bamboo grove from the spacious and quiet room provided a sense of escape and relaxation. What stood out most was the food. The dishes, made with local ingredients, were delightful both visually and in taste. My husband and daughter especially enjoyed pairing them with wine and sake. The next day, we visited a winery and purchased the same wine they had enjoyed. They were particularly impressed by the game meat paired with wine on the second evening. Conversations with the staff were also enjoyable, making for a fulfilling vacation. We look forward to visiting again in another season!

The night I stayed, ...
The night I stayed, it rained continuously. The sound of the rain was soothing, allowing me to relax completely. The meals were accompanied by detailed explanations, letting me learn the story behind each ingredient, which was very satisfying. Thank you so much. This has become one of the accommodations I would love to visit again.

Thank you very much.
Despite the intense heat, the room, beautifully renovated from a traditional storehouse, was quiet and comfortable. Meals made with local ingredients were delicious for both breakfast and dinner. The chef's dedication to food was evident in every detail. The paired drinks were also excellent. The environment around the accommodation is rich in nature and peaceful. Without the heat, it would have been perfect for a pleasant walk, which I slightly regret missing out on. The young staff conveyed their passion for revitalizing Shirotaka Town and Yamagata Prefecture. Thank you very much!

Simply the best!
Visited during the rainy season in June, we checked in while enjoying views of the pond and hydrangeas from the parking lot. The accommodation was a 120-year-old grain storehouse. Designed with double-layered roofing to protect rice from temperature changes, its interior offered a serene world insulated from external humidity and temperature fluctuations. The bath was a deep wooden tub exuding the rich aroma of cypress, providing ultimate relaxation. However, the highlight of this accommodation was undoubtedly dinner time—a rich experience shared with a chef and attendant who are deeply passionate about their craft and local culture. The chef, also a certified sommelier, meticulously curated dishes using seasonal local ingredients and elevated every menu item including homemade bread. Their dedication extended to pairing wines through an extensive network of connections. Listening attentively to their stories while savoring each dish made for an unparalleled dining experience. Tasting rare or unreleased wines added an extraordinary touch to our stay. While personal opinions vary greatly, this accommodation resonated deeply with my values. I left with hopes for another visit after allowing time for both emotional reflection and anticipation for fresh encounters ahead.

It was a luxurious holiday.
Stayed at this accommodation on the third day of our Yamagata trip. Yamagata has many onsens, and while we booked accommodations with onsens for all other nights, we specifically chose this place despite it having no onsen or TV (my husband loves TV). The result was complete satisfaction. The meal portions were just right, allowing us to enjoy everything until the last bite. The only issue was that due to the old building and possibly the slightly strong wind that day, there were various noises like rattling, clanging, and squeaking (perhaps an animal sound), which made it hard to sleep deeply. However, because of that, we woke up early in the morning and enjoyed a walk as well as a relaxing coffee in the lounge of the main building—this turned out to be a positive experience. It’s truly wonderful that such a lovely accommodation exists in a less touristy area of Yamagata!

A whole building accommodation facility at the Gennaitei Kura associated with Uesugi Yozan
A property renovated from a warehouse where you can experience the history of Yamagata with all five senses. The meals, which are an arrangement of local Yamagata ingredients, were truly a delight for the taste and aroma. We were offered sparkling, red, white, and sake that matched the dishes, making for a perfect dining experience. The young staff took full responsibility and provided heartfelt hospitality that truly touched us. We chose this place for our annual New Year's gathering with our family of five, and everyone was very pleased. We will visit again if we have the opportunity. Thank you very much.

A place where you can enjoy nostalgic Japan in the best way.
NIPPONIA was my third stay following visits to Sawara and Chichibu. Once again, it exceeded my expectations. I chose this property to enjoy the natural surroundings, and right at the entrance of the accommodation building (storehouse), I encountered a cute little tree frog! Such delightful surprises are what make this property special. The meals, crafted by a chef who knows the rich ingredients of this land inside out, were delicious and visually stunning. The pairing with Yamagata's unique wine and sake was also superb. The breakfast was filled with local ingredients that you can't experience elsewhere! The stay in the storehouse was modernly arranged, yet quiet, allowing for a restful sleep, making it an ideal vacation to escape the fatigue of city life. Before visiting, I thought there was nothing around, but there were traditional terraced rice fields and various places worth visiting, making it the perfect spot to enjoy nostalgic Japan. I hope to visit again someday.
