    Thank you very much.

The Room furnishings, including the beds and futons, were decent, and the bath and hot spring quality were excellent. Breakfast was wonderful, and the rice was outstanding. I ended up having three bowls without thinking. Overall, there wasn’t much explanation of the services, so I was slightly dissatisfied with the hospitality—it felt like a missed opportunity. The sommelier’s explanations and the selection of drinks were good.

    First visit in 10 years

I stayed at another Accommodation in the same group not long ago, but this was my first return to Tamakiya in 10 years. Last time, discovering Abe Shuzo through the sake pairing was a real highlight, so I did it again this time. Since it was a special occasion, I decided to pay the extra fee and choose the optional premium sake course. It more than lived up to expectations—I truly enjoyed a wide range of excellent sakes, including some with a playful twist. The sommelier’s stories were fascinating, and I wished I could have listened even longer. I was traveling solo, but the staff were consistently courteous and attentive, no different from how they treated larger groups, which I really appreciated. The food was also outstanding: a course featuring plenty of local Niigata ingredients, with every dish delicious from appetizers to dessert. Next time, I’d love to stay in midwinter when there’s deep snow.

A one-of-a-kind Accommodation where you can enjoy Niigata-inspired creative French cuisine paired with fine wines.

It was my first visit in a very long time, as I had stayed at this Accommodation more than 10 years ago. After check-in, I enjoyed Japan’s largest Onsen and then savored a dinner pairing Niigata ingredients with excellent sake, feeling completely relaxed. I was able to enjoy delicious creative cuisine at a level you can’t find even in central Tokyo, and the pairings with the carefully selected drinks were perfect—truly blissful. This time I also tried SAKE HUNDRED, which I rarely have the chance to drink even in Tokyo, and in a way I discovered an exceptional sake that might be “too good to know”… haha Breakfast was also full of Niigata ingredients and everything was delicious—I couldn’t help getting seconds of the freshly cooked rice. It was a two-day stay, but my heart (and stomach) felt completely satisfied and refreshed. A wonderful Accommodation that makes me want to return more regularly in different seasons.

An irresistible sake pairing experience for sake lovers

I stayed here to enjoy the pairing of Snow Country cuisine and sake. Each dish was carefully prepared, allowing the quality of the ingredients to truly shine. What impressed me most was the sake pairing: the selections served with each course were perfectly matched, and I fully enjoyed how the flavors evolved and how interesting each combination was. I also discovered labels I would not normally choose for myself, which made it a wonderful experience. If you enjoy alcohol, this is something I would highly recommend—it made mealtime feel even more special. I also had plenty of time to relax in the Onsen, making this a refreshing stay both physically and mentally.

I stayed at the accommodation "Ikoi." Despite the unfortunate rain, I was warmly welcomed with attentive guidance to the parking area. For the welcome drink, I enjoyed an alcoholic beverage right away, and there were homemade sweets in the room's refrigerator, both of which were delicious. The room was conveniently located next to a large public bath and a relaxation lounge equipped with massage chairs, a variety of drinks, and sweets for ultimate relaxation. The open-air bath in the room had excellent water quality; I soaked multiple times while enjoying the autumn scenery. The room was clean and user-friendly. However, areas with steps may require caution for those with mobility or vision issues. The glass partitions in the bathroom are beautifully clear but might cause concern about accidentally bumping into them. A handrail on the wall could help alleviate this worry when standing up from the low shower chair. It would also be helpful if both sinks had hand soap available. Dinner was served in a calm dining space filled with unique bottles and sake vessels that added excitement to the experience. The special feeling of enjoying French cuisine while wearing yukata was fantastic! Both dinner and sake pairings recommended by the owner were exceptionally delicious and satisfying. Breakfast featured vegetable-focused Japanese dishes served alongside five types of drinks and freshly cooked rice—all incredibly tasty. From baths to meals to sake, everything was outstanding, allowing me to relax fully. The staff's warm atmosphere made my stay even more enjoyable—I look forward to visiting again!

Thank you for a wonderful stay.

While waiting on the cancellation list for meal time, we received a courteous notification about an unexpected cancellation. We requested a time change and a room upgrade (with an additional charge). A lovely female staff member kindly assisted us, making the experience delightful. The Onsen, meals, and drinks were all exceptional! The food was absolutely perfect with impeccable cooking—truly delicious! This is such a wonderful accommodation that we would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    A Charming Hideaway for Adults

We enjoyed an excellent Onsen, exquisite meals, and a rare selection of Japanese sake. The welcome sweets paired with champagne were delightful and left a lasting impression. The Japanese sake pairing with delicately arranged French cuisine was outstanding! The staff's hospitality was warm and inviting, making us eager to visit again in winter.

The bath, Room, and location are excellent.

The Onsen's temperature and water quality were excellent. The room was high-quality with features like indirect lighting. Breakfast was delicious, featuring dishes that highlighted rice and mountain vegetables. If I may suggest, having a Bluetooth speaker in the room would make it perfect.

The food was absolutely delicious. The staff, cuisine, atmosphere, and overall impression of the restaurant were excellent. Having a lounge on the same floor as the large public bath was a great feature. I enjoyed relaxing there with drinks and magazines after bathing. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    The meal was too...

Despite the heavy snowfall and the suspension of local train services, we were able to stay safely thanks to a Shuttle Service from afar. We went with high expectations for one of Japan's three medicinal hot springs. Although the water wasn't as rich as expected, it was pleasantly comfortable. What was particularly disappointing was that we chose the shabu-shabu course, but aside from pork and accompanying vegetables for the pot, nothing else came with it except white rice. I would have expected pickles, soup, or some small side dishes. I'm not sure what concept led to this decision, but I was at a loss for words due to my surprise. It felt like a waste since the hot spring water was good. Perhaps choosing French cuisine would have been better. In comparison, breakfast was delicious and satisfying. Additionally, when I requested a shower cap that is available at most Properties (Stays), I was surprised to be told outright that they don't provide them here. Also, it would be nice if they could provide two or three bath towels. I chose this Property based on its high Review ratings but found it disappointing.

A Ryokan that is too underrated (for adults)

First, let me introduce Matsunoyama Onsen. I was really torn about whether to book this property, so I did a lot of research. I can't say if it stands alongside Kusatsu and Arima, and I think the "Top Three" is just a matter of who says it first, but the deciding factor was a blog that described it as "one of Japan's top three medicinal baths, Matsunoyama Onsen, known for its incredibly healthy medicinal properties." The author shared their personal experience and seemed to be quite taken with it, so I decided on this trip. By the way, the hot spring water is said to be ancient seawater with a high salt content, so I was cautious about it irritating my skin, but it was not an issue at all. The bath was so pleasant that I went to the large public bath about four times. Next, the location. It's quite deep in the mountains. It's a quaint onsen town, a hidden gem. I thought I might be disappointed by the lack of things to do, but the scenery in November was breathtakingly beautiful. The mountain slopes were dyed orange, with mountain ranges wrapped in a sea of clouds in the distance, and fields and rice paddies reflecting the light. Eating new rice and vegetables in such an environment is pure happiness. If you book for two or more people, you can choose a full course by Chef Kuriyama, who worked as a sous chef at a two-star restaurant in Roppongi, Tokyo, but since I was alone at the last minute, I only had pork shabu-shabu. However, this was also wonderful. The pork had little scum, a strong flavor, and was tender. And the ingredients for the hot pot were mushrooms! They are rich in dietary fiber and warm the body. Young people might want to eat a lot of meat, but for someone like me, past the age of forty, mushrooms are truly appreciated (the broth is delicious too!). After the meal comes the alcohol, but I couldn't drink much this time. However, the wine choice I requested lightly was just right for me. It was a reliable brand and delicious (they serve something reasonably priced). Once my health is back, I'd like to compare different sake. The service was, of course, excellent, and I was surprised that even such a small-scale ryokan offered a lounge and free drink service. There was also a massage chair, and I was impressed that they built such a well-equipped property in the mountains. (Please refer to the photos) Next, the snowmelt season in March is good, but the terraced rice fields of Hoshitoge are said to be beautiful in June, so that time is also tempting. In any case, I think it's suitable for those who love hidden hot springs, enjoy alcohol, and want to comfortably stay in a luxury ryokan while being surrounded by rugged nature. (The only four-star point is the noise from the air conditioning)

High-quality hot spring with free-flowing water & spacious in-room bath.

We were charged extra, but we were moved to a spacious and lovely room. The bathroom in the room was also larger than those in typical accommodations, and the hot spring water was very hot, but by adding a little cold water, I could enjoy the bath to my liking. Above all, the quality of the hot spring was excellent, and it was very warming. It was a twin room, but since I usually only use semi-double or larger beds, the bed felt a bit narrow. There was space between the beds, so I thought it might be possible to place two semi-doubles together in the style of overseas hotels.
