    Guest Reviews for villa SUGURO (Former Suguro Residence)

    We stayed at LOQUAT Nishi-Izu, villa SUGURO (the former Suguro Residence). This historic family home has been renovated with exceptional taste, and everything—from the building itself to the garden, the detached open-air bath, and the interior details such as furniture and lighting—feels cohesive at a very high level. What impressed me most was the connection between the borrowed forest view framed by the windows and the modern stone garden. Each Room offers a different view and way to spend time, and wherever we were, we naturally felt calm—it was a truly soothing space. A couple of small points stood out: the bedroom window treatments and some of the interior partitions between Rooms. Beautiful translucent natural materials and washi paper are used, but they do not provide strong blackout performance, so once sunrise comes up, the Room becomes quite bright. Also, while some of the exterior wooden window frames seemed newly installed, there were small gaps in places; since it was summer, tiny insects occasionally made their way inside. The study area on the second floor had a record player set up, so we brought our favorite records from home and enjoyed listening to music. Being able to listen to music we love in a quiet space with good sound quality felt like a real luxury. The detached open-air bath and hammam were also excellent—comfortable in every way, including spaciousness, water temperature, and how easy it was to use the hammam area. For dinner, staff picked us up by car and took us to their reception restaurant about five minutes away for a course meal. Everything was delicious and highly satisfying; however, there was one minor moment when it felt like information sharing among staff may not have been fully aligned. What moved me most was breakfast served in our Room. It may have been the best among all Accommodations we’ve stayed at—not because it emphasized extravagance or expensive ingredients upfront, but because every element—ingredients quality, flavor profile, balance, and concept—was thoughtfully considered. Above all else، I still remember how clearly we could taste each ingredient itself.

    We had the pleasure of enjoying the private dinner Plan at Soro Residence. The cuisine was not only delicious, but each dish was beautifully presented like a work of art. The flowers arranged to match the dishes and the floral decorations throughout the Room were truly wonderful, creating a special space that felt extraordinary. The wine pairing was also exceptional—each time we paired a sip of wine after a bite, both were elevated, and we were repeatedly moved by how much the flavors opened up. In addition, all staff provided warm and attentive hospitality from start to finish, allowing us to spend a comfortable and luxurious time. Thank you very much for an unforgettable experience.

    A lovely space

    Overall, I was satisfied, but the washroom was very dark, making it difficult for women to do makeup. There is no mirror outside the washroom, so it would be nice to have a vanity area near a window where makeup can be applied. The food was delicious. All of the staff were kind.

    Everything was excellent!

    The location, Room, service, cuisine, and baths—everything was perfect. I couldn’t try every flavor at the all-you-can-eat gelato bar, but I truly enjoyed it. The dishes were made with carefully selected ingredients and featured unexpected combinations with incredible flavors—many thanks to the chef. I’d love to visit again in a different season.     With a dedicated concierge service, they carefully confirmed even the smallest details with us before our stay, so we were able to arrive feeling completely at ease. The meals were delicious, and the thoughtful presentation and ambiance made for a truly romantic time. The guest room was spacious, warm, and comfortable—a place where we could genuinely relax. In addition, the partnered strawberry picking and afternoon tea were excellent, making the entire stay incredibly enjoyable and memorable. Highly recommended for anniversaries or a special getaway with someone important.

    I was able to relax.

    My wife and I stayed here, and the staff’s service was outstanding. From check-in to being shown to our room, everything was explained carefully, which we really appreciated. The gelato service was great—we could try a variety of flavors. It was hard to believe the Hotel is several hundred years old; it has a wonderful antique atmosphere and charm, and we were continually impressed. The Onsen in the guest room was very relaxing, though the route to the shower room felt like a small area for improvement. At the staff’s suggestion, we went to a nearby beach to watch the sunset. The sun setting over West Izu was breathtaking and truly moving. Every dish in the meal showcased the chef’s creativity and was impressive—everything was delicious. The bread in particular had a flavor unlike anything we’ve had elsewhere. The bar in the kura storehouse also had great character and was lovely. Breakfast offered many options as well, and we were completely satisfied with everything—from presentation to taste. We were able to relax together at a leisurely pace and had an amazing time. Thank you very much.

    Enjoy authentic Italian cuisine crafted with care by our chef.

    Each of the seven dishes, carefully crafted with a unique theme, was absolutely delicious. The presentation of each dish was so delicate and beautiful that it left us in awe every time. The room, skillfully renovated from a traditional storehouse, had an excellent layout and provided a very comfortable stay. We especially appreciated the underfloor heating during this season. Additionally, the private Onsen open-air bath attached to the room was exceptionally spacious, allowing for a luxurious and relaxing experience.

    It was a very lovely accommodation! I am satisfied!

    I was nervous about traveling for the first time with my baby, but the accommodation provided various amenities like a baby bed and high chair to make our stay comfortable. The service was excellent! The meals reflected the chef's dedication, and not only were they delicious, but it was also an incredibly wonderful experience. The atmosphere of the accommodation was lovely and very relaxing, with thoughtful details everywhere that made it special. It’s a place I’d love to visit again with family or friends. It’s a shame it’s not closer!

    I keep coming back, ...

    I keep coming back, and this accommodation is always amazing! This time, we were taken to a fireworks festival and enjoyed the display launched right in front of the viewing seats. The Toi Fireworks Festival may be small in scale, but it has a warm atmosphere and is much less crowded compared to Tokyo's festivals, allowing for a relaxed experience. Thanks to the dedicated support from the Loquat staff at the venue, we had a comfortable time. The fried chicken and lemon sour were also delicious. Next month, I have reserved the plan with a private chef! It will be my first time experiencing it with the new chef, so I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of culinary art awaits.

    A Luxurious Experience

    In one word, it was an extraordinary stay that embodied a truly wonderful experience. Our family of four stayed at Katsuro-tei. The staff, though young, were friendly and maintained a perfect balance of approachable conversation and professional hospitality. We were transported to the accommodation in a dedicated Harrier shuttle service, with impeccable timing that made the flow of our stay seamless. The meals were highly creative and filled with excitement as we anticipated each dish; the grilled ayu fish was particularly outstanding. Every dish reflected the chef's passion and dedication to their craft. This was likely the most well-balanced hotel we have ever stayed at. We would love to return again!

    Satisfaction Beyond Expectations

    I finally had the opportunity to visit LOQUAT, a place I had always wanted to go. Although I arrived well before check-in time and felt apologetic, the staff kindly accommodated me with a smooth check-in process. The concierge's warm hospitality made me feel confident in my choice of accommodation. The room was incredibly quiet, allowing for peaceful relaxation, perhaps due to the location. I enjoyed unwinding with services like the minibar and spent a leisurely time in the spacious open-air bath. The meals were delicious across the board, and since I chose the brunch plan this time, I could enjoy lunch at a relaxed pace without rushing in the morning—an experience that left me completely satisfied. While having great rooms and food is important, ultimately it’s all about hospitality for me. The staff here provided such exceptional service that I was able to enjoy my stay comfortably until the very end—I am truly grateful for their efforts.

    Everything about this accommodation was wonderful!

    We stayed here for our wedding anniversary and used the Katsuro Residence. The staff's hospitality and the cleanliness of the accommodation were excellent, making it a perfect experience. The room included a hammam bath, and breakfast was brought to the room by the staff. Shuttle service from the restaurant to the accommodation was also provided, ensuring every detail was taken care of. We would love to stay here again if we have another opportunity!

    This was a repeat visit, and this time we celebrated the birthdays of two friends. The staff joined in the celebration, making it a truly enjoyable experience. We are always grateful for the warm hospitality. The next day, we had lunch featuring seasonal vegetables, and the fresh onion soup was particularly delicious. For the second part of our birthday celebration, desserts were decorated in a special birthday style, which delighted my friends. We also received some seasonal white loquats as a gift and enjoyed sweet liquor made from them—it was absolutely delightful. I’m already looking forward to discovering what delicious dishes await us on our next visit!

    We stayed as a family of three. The renovated room, originally a warehouse from the Meiji era, was compact yet modern and charming with features like an earthen floor. The open-air hot spring bath with natural flowing water was spacious, had the perfect temperature, and allowed for long soaks. The meals were innovative and visually stunning but also incredibly delicious. It was a gentle Italian cuisine that highlighted the natural flavors of the ingredients. Breakfast, including fresh vegetables, sashimi, clay pot rice, and soup with rich broth, was entirely satisfying. Guests can enjoy as much handmade gelato as they like—plus we received bread from a popular bakery as a souvenir—it was amazing! The staff's hospitality stood out; their flexible approach beyond standard procedures left a great impression. Everyone seemed cheerful and genuinely enjoyed their work.     I had a relaxing stay. It was excellent.

    The space, utilizing the atmosphere of an old warehouse, was soothing and allowed for a relaxing stay. The meals were excellent, with beautifully presented appetizers, pasta, and main dishes—all delicious—and the wine selection was outstanding. The welcome gelato and bakery souvenir were delightful touches. The staff provided attentive yet appropriately distanced service, making the experience very comfortable. It was a highly satisfying stay that makes me want to return and try a different room next time.

    The best hospitality

    I love the culinary world created by the chef and have been visiting since the previous hotel. It was a space of ultimate relaxation with delicious food pairings and Onsen. This time, I chose a plan with lunch but no breakfast, and it was excellent! I enjoyed drinks and Onsen late into the night, had a light meal at the bakery in the morning, and savored the chef's handmade course for lunch. It felt like the luxury of a multiple night stay. I was also delighted by the staff's attentive hospitality. Thank you for the ultimate relaxation. I will definitely visit again.

    It was excellent.

    I stayed at the property for her birthday. The room, food, and service were all truly wonderful, and I was very satisfied. Immediately after completing the reservation, I was contacted by the concierge, who kindly attended to allergy confirmations and bouquet preparations even before the stay. The dinner menu had a title for each dish, which made me excited to see what would be served. They used local ingredients from Nishi-Izu, such as splendid alfonsino and shiitake mushrooms, lavishly, and it was very delicious. The one disappointing point was that the heating in the restaurant was not very effective, and it was quite cold. However, putting that aside, the experience until checkout was truly wonderful, and I would love to revisit on another important occasion.

    Great Enjoyment

    This time, I stayed at the long-admired Katsurotei. If Loquat is the sea, this is the mountain. First, I had a reservation for lunch, which I gratefully enjoyed. Each dish, crafted with attention to detail, was surprising and made me want to dance with joy. The heartfelt hospitality, thinking about how to make guests happy, was deeply felt. I was driven to the long-admired Katsurotei. The accommodations were so spacious that it was overwhelming for one person. The wind in Nishi-Izu was strong, and it was a stormy day, but every room had floor heating, making it seem like I could sleep anywhere. Although I couldn't capture everything in photos, it seems possible to enjoy the chef's cuisine here. From IH to ovens, various types of glassware, inclusive of drinks and gelato, I wonder if this is charged. The wine cellar was filled with plenty of bottles. From the balcony, you can see a stream, and there was a fireplace. The amenities included soap and oil made from Nishi-Izu's specialty loquat. The shampoo and treatment I purchased to take home were wonderful, allowing me to feel the nature of Nishi-Izu. The bath was, needless to say, the best. The highlight was the hammam bath. Everything was a first for me, and I struggled alone, but I was enveloped in a pleasant scent and gently broke into a sweat, heading to dinner in an unparalleled state of relaxation. I just want you to eat. That sums it up. Each dish was like a planet in the universe, awakening the senses even if you were just dazed. I was truly happy to enjoy the chef's heartfelt cuisine every time. It is a unique place where you can be healed and receive the power of Nishi-Izu's nature. I will definitely return again.

    I understand that you are trying hard, but there are many disappointing points. The worst was the breakfast on the second day. When I went to the dining area, there was no heating at all, and the room was cold. There was a heater placed near the seat I was guided to, but the staff didn't turn it on, so I did it myself. The meal, including eggs, bacon, and bread, was all cold, and the bacon was so cold that the fat had solidified and turned white. Also, since I had reserved a birthday plan, there was supposed to be an additional dish, but I received a mysterious explanation that "since it's a multiple night stay, there's one dish service." It was clear that most of the staff enjoy customer service, but it left a strong impression of being self-centered. Empty glasses were left as they were, and the breakfast dessert didn't come out on the first or second day unless we prompted. Additionally, I was concerned about the lack of space to place bags, the few hangers to hang clothes, and the limited space to place small items and accessories, considering the room's square footage.

    About three years ago, I stayed at Ninokura, and seeing the Reviews about improvements such as the lack of pathways and privacy screens to the open-air bath in the Room, I decided to stay at Katsuro-tei with high expectations this time. As a result, the overall stay was very disappointing. Despite the Accommodation Fee being over 100,000 yen per person per night, the service aspect was disappointing. The service was friendly in a good way, but too casual in a bad way, which I had never experienced at a Property in this price range. Despite having only a few guest rooms per day, they did not have the guest information, and I was surprised when asked about my residence during the Shuttle Service. Also, despite answering my meal preferences via email in advance and having previous data, I was stunned when shiso and fish with many small bones, which I had confirmed, were served. Especially the fish served at breakfast was barracuda, and I thought it would be deboned, but it wasn't, and even my companion, who doesn't mind bones, said there were quite a lot of small bones. The person who came to prepare the meal in the Room did not seem to be the chef, and one person was in a regular suit without a hat, raising questions about hygiene. The Italian dinner also seemed not to match the price range of the Stays, focusing on ingredients. The portion was small for men, and three years ago, the satisfaction in terms of quantity and quality was higher. The Room amenities were also reduced, and the bath amenities, which were previously available to take home, were changed to in-room fixtures, with no added value like Katsuro-tei original amenities, making me regret not choosing Ninokura. The most disappointing was during dinner when three people heard and thought it was a welcome drink, but each was charged for an additional drink (totaling 3,900 yen). I have no problem paying for something clearly stated as chargeable and agreed upon in advance, but the deceptive explanation (without any mention of the price) ruined everything. I found out later by looking at the statement, as I paid with a card along with other drinks I ordered myself. The 3,000 yen charge from the IKYU member benefits was also used without notice during dinner, even though I planned to use it at the bakery the next day. I have never accumulated so much dissatisfaction at this price range before, and this is the first time I am writing such a Review. Also, although it was midwinter, there were many gaps leading outside in the building, and since they were not sealed, two large spiders and one caterpillar appeared indoors.

    A very enjoyable and comfortable stay.

    I always have a very pleasant time here. By visiting repeatedly, I have come to appreciate the charm of this place even more. I especially look forward to dinner every time I visit. It's unnecessary to explain, so I'll refrain, but the dishes are always very enjoyable, beautiful, and delicious. The bright and light-hearted service from the staff, neither too distant nor too close, is another reason why I can enjoy my stay comfortably. I am grateful for the attentive care and the willingness to accommodate individual requests. This is a place I want to keep visiting in the future.
