We were very satisfied with the surroundings, the meals, and the hostess.

My wife and I stayed for one night shortly before Tanabata. We visited after seeing it featured on NHK’s “Bi no Tsubo,” because we wanted to try the irori hearth cuisine. The entrance is located within the large parking area of Shirayama Hime Shrine, and the Accommodation sits in a quiet setting between the shrine’s approach paths. Our Room was a Japanese-style tatami room, and the garden view from the engawa veranda—looking past the irori—was full of charm and very relaxing. There is no toilet in the Room, but one is very close by, so it wasn’t an issue. It felt like staying in a spacious traditional home. Also, in a reading room near the bath called Waraku-an, we could sit on chairs on the veranda and gaze at the greenery along the shrine approach, losing track of time. Dinner was served in another Japanese-style room with an irori. The appetizers presented in a bamboo basket were decorated with bamboo leaves and hydrangeas, giving a cool summer feel. After that, we enjoyed delicious dishes centered around ayu (sweetfish) grilled by the young proprietor over the irori in our room. The ayu rice was excellent as well. Including breakfast, everything was truly delicious, and the portions were just right—we were very satisfied. Before long we noticed handwritten messages from the proprietress throughout our Room and around the Accommodation. They are humorous and warm, and when you speak with her you can really feel her heartfelt hospitality and unhurried sense of time. She even said that when bears once appeared at the shrine, they had simply come to pay their respects—bravo. All in all, Wadayasan at Mt. Hakusan was an outstanding Accommodation for its setting, food, and wonderful proprietress—and it’s an Accommodation we would love to stay at again.

    Accommodation in the Snow

The meal, made with local ingredients, was beautifully presented and truly delicious. Thank you for your thoughtful hospitality. In particular, the freshly grilled char—hot and flaky—was outstanding. I would love to visit again. It made for a wonderful birthday celebration, and I’m grateful to everyone.

    Highly Satisfying Accommodation

We visited Wada-ya, which my friend found for us, at the end of our Kanazawa trip. The room and meals were excellent, but above all, it is an accommodation where you can truly feel the hospitality of the hostess. The charming artwork seen in various places was also created by the hostess herself. I immediately recommended it to my daughter-in-law's mother.

I used to believe that traditional ryokans in Kyoto were the pinnacle of accommodation, but this ryokan completely changed my perspective. From the moment I arrived, the check-in process was exceptionally courteous, and despite it being my first visit, I was warmly welcomed as if I were a regular guest. The dinner was meticulously crafted with each dish showcasing thoughtful creativity. The highlight was savoring charcoal-grilled sweetfish right in front of me in the room—a rare luxury that's hard to find elsewhere. The timing of each dish's presentation was impeccable, creating a perfect balance between relaxation and anticipation throughout the meal. The interior decor of the ryokan is carefully curated down to every detail, maximizing the charm of its historic architecture while skillfully maintaining an atmosphere of tranquility. If there is one drawback, it would be that access primarily assumes travel by car. However, choosing to arrive solely via public transportation added a unique flavor to my journey that even minor inconveniences became part of its charm. I am already looking forward to returning during autumn when I can experience its deepened beauty amidst vibrant fall foliage.

Experience heartfelt hospitality and exquisite dishes that celebrate natural beauty!

Step into the accommodation and be greeted by the warm smile of the hostess. Upon being shown to your room, you'll find a heartfelt message card written in elegant script: "Once you enter your room, please relax completely... Enjoy at your leisure." Begin with a soothing bath. Immerse yourself in the pure and gentle waters, feeling warmth spread through your body. The water is said to be heated using sacred spring water from Hakusan Reisu, offering a sense of purification for both body and soul. With the private bath all to yourself, stretch out fully as sunlight reflects off rocks and greenery from Hakusan's approach path blends harmoniously through glass windows. Cool down afterward in a serene space filled with historical charm that calms both mind and spirit. Next, take a stroll through the garden where natural greenery abounds alongside flowing streams. Bamboo groves and distant views of Shishiku Highland create an atmosphere that fills your heart with tranquility. As evening approaches, head to dinner where you're captivated by handwritten menus from the hostess. From appetizers onward, each dish crafted by the chef brings excitement with its thoughtful presentation and timing. The highlight is salt-grilled ayu fish prepared over an irori hearth—skewered on bamboo sticks over carefully arranged charcoal while gracefully cooked before you—a feast for both eyes and palate. After savoring every bite including ayu rice followed by dessert, you might even feel like you've become one with ayu fish itself (perhaps due to enjoying too much sake). A deep sleep follows until waking up refreshed at sunrise. Start your morning with another rejuvenating bath before heading to breakfast featuring delights like brown rice amazake mixed with soy milk for an energizing start along with local specialties such as firm tofu or pickled plums—each bite showcasing nature’s bounty. Finally bid farewell as you're sent off surrounded by wildflowers thoughtfully placed throughout this accommodation—a stay filled entirely with peace and satisfaction awaits!

    Excellent

It was an accommodation that truly made me glad I came. Every detail and space was filled with thoughtful care. The hostess's humor and artistic sense could be felt everywhere, leaving me deeply moved by the warmth and elegance that define "authenticity." From the exquisite meals enjoyed in a leisurely atmosphere to the quiet hours spent in the reading room with a KAWAI upright piano, everything was exceptional... I am filled with gratitude.

    Wa no Sato

Wadaya offers a feeling of returning to an ideal Japanese retreat for those who live abroad. It promises the blessings of nature and peaceful, free time. The meals, rock baths, and rooms are all thoughtfully prepared with heartfelt care. The charming hostess, the chef grilling freshly caught sweetfish and rare mountain delicacies at the hearth, and even the frogs singing in harmony outside create a surprising sense of unity. This accommodation exudes the divine presence of Kikurihime-no-Kami from Hakusan Hime Shrine, known for "binding connections," as if it has been blessed since ancient times.

The fish grilled over the irori was tender and juicy with crispy skin, truly delicious. Other dishes were also flavorful, highlighting the natural taste of the ingredients. The view of nature and the sound of frogs from the Room were very soothing. It was a bit disappointing that there was no toilet in the Room, but I would love to visit again in every season.

A beloved place that brings peace of mind

This was my second stay. In the morning, I could hear the sounds of birds and the mountains, which provided the ultimate relaxation. The attentive service and heartfelt meals were also satisfying. Since the day after my stay was the first day of the month, many people visited Shirayama Hime Shrine for worship early in the morning. The autumn leaves were beautiful, and it reminded me once again of how wonderful Japan is. It's a place I want to visit again.

I was satisfied with the carefully selected ambiance. The food, service, and the inn's setup were all satisfactory. The sweetfish grilled over the hearth and the broiled sweetfish fillet were delicious. My favorite was the sweetfish rice. Even though I thought I was too full to eat anymore, I ended up having seconds because it was so delicious and emptied the pot. Next time, I would like to try the bear hot pot. Since it's an old Japanese house, it might become difficult to use as my legs and back weaken, so I want to try the bear hot pot while I'm still young. - I rated the guest room a 4 because although I was served coffee, the cup was too stylish and lacked a handle, making it difficult to drink the hot coffee. - I rated the bath and facilities a 4 because the chair in the bathroom was too low to use, and the chair in the dining area was also a bit low, which put a strain on my back during meals and was uncomfortable. - I think it might be difficult because higher chairs might be hard for shorter people to use, but it would be nice if there could be a footrest available. This is a strict evaluation, but I wrote it because I would like to use the inn again next time.
