    Meticulous attention to every detail

    I originally made a Reservation at “Nene no Michi Bettei,” but due to a change in Room allocation, I ended up staying at Hotel VMG Kyoto Kamogawa. From check-in to check-out, I was deeply impressed by the staff’s impeccable attention to detail and thoughtful hospitality. Sleeping in the bedroom while gazing up at the coffered ceiling felt like an “exceptional escape from everyday life.” At the paid lounge, alcohol and other drinks are available free-flow, with snacks as well—it truly feels like a private lounge. Because the property preserves the character of a historic building, soundproofing is not perfect; however, it more than makes up for it with an elegant, nostalgic atmosphere. The Japanese-style room next to the bedroom overlooks a small courtyard garden and offers a wonderfully atmospheric view that made time feel as if it passed more slowly. That said, perhaps because the air conditioning does not reach this room easily, I found the heat noticeable. Although it would involve additional cost, lending spot coolers or simple heaters to guests upon request during limited seasons (summer/winter) could help make better use of this room and may also become a new experiential highlight—especially for international travelers. I’m truly grateful to all of the staff for giving me such an extraordinary stay. This is a Hotel I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking an “indescribably exceptional escape from everyday life.”

    A perfect location for enjoying views of the Kamo River!

    I spent a relaxing time on the terrace simply gazing at the Kamo River. The flowing water, a large heron standing still, ducks landing on the surface, and people strolling or jogging along the riverbank... The bath was also very relaxing. I could take wine and coffee from the lounge back to my Room and enjoy them, which was very satisfying. I was able to truly unwind. I would like to give a perfect rating, but I deducted stars because two points personally bothered me: - The toilet’s washlet did not activate easily. I had to press the button over and over before it finally worked. - There is a sink in the toilet area, but there were no hand towels or paper towels—so I wasn’t sure what to dry my hands with. Because this is a high-level Hotel, I expect these “basic things” to work without issues, so I rated it strictly. That said, I truly recommend it for anyone who wants to relax while looking out over the Kamo River.

    During cherry blossom season, the Takase River is right in front of the hotel, and our room window overlooked the Kamo River. The location was excellent, and the staff were very attentive—an experience we truly enjoyed.

    The Ultimate Kyoto Trip to Enjoy Cherry Blossoms

    I was able to stay at Nene 103 during cherry blossom season. From the Room window, I could see the cherry blossoms in Kodaiji Park, and at night I fully enjoyed viewing the illuminated Yasaka Pagoda and the night cherry blossoms, as well as admiring the blossoms from the Room. Both dinner at Funatsuru and breakfast at Heian Shrine were excellent. The Room is located along Nene-no-Michi, so during cherry blossom season many tourists pass by and it can be noisy during the day, but it was quiet at night and I was able to sleep well. The location is also great, making early-morning sightseeing at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Yasaka Pagoda very convenient. I did notice that the washroom and toilet are connected, which felt a bit cramped. I visit Kyoto several times every year, and this stay made for my best Kyoto trip yet. Thank you very much.

    It was a small Hotel with a charming atmosphere.

    This was a small, charming, and quiet Hotel with a relaxing atmosphere along the Takase River. As it was renovated from a traditional Ryokan restaurant, you can enjoy an authentic Kyoto-style setting. Since it is located on Kiyamachi Street, there are plenty of restaurants nearby. You can also walk to Kawaramachi Station, and the location is excellent—perfect for exploring the city on foot. It was a valuable experience to stay in a building that preserves its original historic structure; however, we did notice some noise from the floor above, and the heating/air conditioning was not very effective, so it felt a bit chilly at times—please keep this in mind.

    An experiential Hotel, though there are a few drawbacks.

    The Hotel’s locations are spread out, so I ended up checking in at a place different from the address provided. I had booked a Room along the Kamo River, so it felt odd, but I arrived at the Nene building near Kodai-ji Temple. However, the hospitality there was excellent: I was served warm, delicious tea and sweets, and they arranged a taxi for me afterward. The tea—said to be connected to Ayataka—was very good. I enjoyed it in the Nene lounge with snacks such as salted kombu and konpeito, and it became a memorable taste. Considering the total cost of about ¥90,000 for meals and Accommodation, there were some disappointing points: insufficient blackout curtains on the windows, no door between the bedroom and the other Room(s), and no soap provided at one of the sinks. A Room facing the Kamo River has lovely morning sunlight, but because it doesn’t block light well enough, I woke up very early. The lack of a door between rooms is literal: when I listened to a podcast in the sofa area on the left after entering, my companion said it was too loud. There should be a door on the bedroom side. There are two sinks in the Room: one is downstairs in front of the bath area, and another is just outside after leaving the toilet. After using the toilet you want to wash your hands with soap, but none was provided there—so I had to go downstairs to wash properly. This should be easy to fix. Other than that, everything was good. Since this is an experience-focused Hotel/Accommodation concept, I felt it’s better to make a Reservation for a course that includes meals. Dinner was at a wonderful restaurant and tasted excellent. It was at LEUN Funatsuru Kyoto Kamogawa Resort—a large venue that could probably host wedding after-parties as well. It was around cherry blossom season (or slightly before), and we had cherry blossom-themed cocktails among other items; overall it was very satisfying. For breakfast, they arrange a taxi ride to Heian Shrine for your meal there. It’s set-course style rather than buffet-style. If there happens to be a wedding ceremony at the shrine at that time, you may end up going into another party’s waiting area while still dressed casually after waking up; I think some coordination would help (avoiding overlap or providing an alternative entrance). Overall this is a good Hotel with an interesting approach—spreading out its Accommodation spaces and affiliated restaurants across multiple locations—and I look forward to further improvements. Also (not exactly a complaint), one of doors/locks by what seemed like an outdoor terrace along the Kamo River (not inside my Room—possibly near one of their lounges) was locked.

    It was the best trip.

    This was a trip with my wife and our 1-year-old son. It was his first real trip, and we were looking for an Accommodation that could welcome families with children. That’s how we found VMG Kyoto, and we chose to stay here. In the end, it was absolutely the right decision. The Room was spacious, with a wonderful balance of traditional charm and modern comfort, so we could truly relax. The lounge also had unlimited drinks—of course alcohol, but also 100% mandarin orange juice and apple juice that children can enjoy, which made our son very happy. We were worried he might fall off the bed, so we really appreciated that they accommodated us with futon bedding. The location is very Kyoto-like, surrounded by beautiful historic streetscapes. Kodai-ji Temple is right in front of you, and if you walk a little farther you can easily explore Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Yasaka Shrine, and Gion on foot. The meals were outstanding as well: dinner was a French course at an affiliated restaurant, and breakfast can be enjoyed at Heian Shrine. At the restaurant our child unexpectedly fell asleep, but they quickly prepared a makeshift bed for him; when he started getting bored during the meal later on, they brought out stuffed toys to help keep him entertained. Transportation to and from the dining venue is by taxi arranged by the Hotel, so you can travel without any worries. On the way back after breakfast at Heian Shrine, they even give you a taxi voucher if you want to explore nearby first so you can return on your own schedule. Since our child is currently obsessed with animals, we went to the zoo after Heian Shrine breakfast; then we stopped by Nanzen-ji Temple before having lunch and returning to the Hotel. If I had to mention one area for improvement: there is no dedicated Hotel parking lot, so you need to use nearby paid parking. All of the Hotel staff were kind and happily accommodated us regarding traveling with a child as well as allergies and food preferences/dislikes. We are truly grateful. Thank you very much.

    A Blissful Trip with My Mother

    I stayed here for a one-night trip with my mother. The location was excellent, with beautiful views along the Kamo River and close to Shijo-Kawaramachi, making it very convenient for getting around. For my mother, who has knee problems, we chose a Room with a table instead of one where you relax in a floor chair, and the interior furnishings were very high quality, making it comfortable to spend time relaxing in the Room. We also appreciated the heating in the washroom. The hospitality was wonderful as well, and we are truly grateful for all the thoughtful attention to detail. One of our goals was breakfast while looking out at the garden of Heian Shrine, and my mother especially enjoyed that luxurious time. Thank you very much—we would love to stay again.

    I had a pleasant stay.

    The terrace of the room along the Kamogawa River was fantastic. I enjoyed a peaceful and refreshing time, waking up early to quietly watch the changing scenery of the mountain ridges. The room was new, and the facilities were clean. The scent of cypress in the bath was especially delightful, and I even indulged in a morning bath. Dinner at Funatsuru had a great atmosphere and left me very satisfied. Although my elderly mother found some dishes a bit heavy midway through (as it’s French cuisine), I personally loved it. A few points that felt slightly disappointing: The lounge was not very user-friendly. I wanted to enjoy unopened bottles of alcohol but couldn’t find a bottle opener. Additionally, there wasn’t a wine stopper for opened sparkling wine, which left me unsure what to do next. Perhaps staff usually take care of these things, but I hesitated to go out of my way to call someone over for assistance—it felt inconvenient. Regarding our room key, it seemed like staff didn’t realize they hadn’t handed it over until we asked about it—this gave an impression that attention to detail might be lacking in some areas. It’s unfortunate because all staff members were friendly and left a positive impression overall. Lastly, breakfast could use more creativity—it felt too simple compared to how beautiful Shinen Garden looked from where we dined. Perhaps this contrast stood out more because dinner had been so exceptional. That said, being able to stroll through Shinen Garden after breakfast and having check-out at 12 PM allowed us plenty of time for sightseeing around the city before leaving—these made for wonderful memories. With its convenient location as well as many positives overall, this is definitely a hotel I’d recommend! Thank you for your hospitality!

    The staff at Funazur...

    The staff at Funazuru for dining was not very satisfactory. The food was delicious, but there seemed to be many new staff members, and their service was lacking. They couldn't answer questions about the taste of the wine. The Hotel had noise issues from nighttime motorcycle gangs, which were quite disturbing. Additionally, I disliked that small insects came in through the window.

    It's amazing!

    We stayed here for a family trip with my mother and younger brother. My mother has difficulty walking, so we chose this accommodation for its excellent location near many tourist spots, and the service was absolutely outstanding. The welcome drinks and snacks, all local specialties, were delicious and exceeded our expectations. With the all-inclusive plan, we enjoyed a relaxing time sipping sparkling wine. The room was fantastic, and seeing my mother's happy face made me truly delighted. Thank you very much!

    A Hotel renovated from a traditional townhouse.

    This was my first time using this accommodation, and it was very clean. I enjoyed the riverside lounge as well. Drinks were included, so I could enjoy them without hesitation. If the amenities could be improved a bit more, it would be even better. The breakfast at Heian Shrine was also delightful.

    It was an interestin...

    It was an interesting accommodation where you could experience a Kyoto townhouse and even enjoy a riverside dining area. The coordination for outdoor dining was excellent, and being guided immediately upon arrival was very pleasant. Both dinner and breakfast were, of course, extremely delicious. This time it was a solo trip, but I believe staying with a few close friends would make for an even more enjoyable experience. I would love to stay here again.

    It was a very pleasant stay with delicious meals and Shuttle Service included. Although the lounge felt slightly small, I made good use of it. The Room I chose had stairs and a bathroom downstairs, which was a bit inconvenient for my age. Thank you for lending me a parasol as well.

    We stayed for one night as a family. The Kamo River view Room in the Ryoito building has a terrace with a view of Kiyomizu Temple. There is also a riverside dining area where you can enjoy drinks from the lounge, which is fantastic. The staff were incredibly kind, and we would definitely love to visit again.

    Experience a New Kyoto at the Decentralized Hotel VMG!

    The hotel is divided into two buildings, "Higashiyama Nene Building" and "Kamogawa Ryo-i Building," but check-in is available at either location. Before exploring Kodaiji Temple in the afternoon, you can leave your luggage at the "Nene Building," enjoy tea and sweets in the lounge, and complete your check-in process. Afterward, you can stroll around Kodaiji Temple area hands-free. If you're tired, take a break in the lounge... As soon as you step into the entrance of "Nene Building," you'll be greeted by a serene atmosphere. While Nene-no-Michi Street may be bustling with tourists, only guests like us can pass through the hotel's white noren curtain... It feels truly special and luxurious! From the lounge (or riverside terrace at Ryo-i Building), enjoy views of the garden while sipping your favorite drink and chatting with family... Time flows slowly here, creating a relaxing experience like no other. This was our first time enjoying such a unique lounge experience! Our luggage was transported from Higashiyama to our accommodation at "Ryo-i Building" near Kamogawa River. After resting for a bit, we enjoyed walking as a family to reach "Ryo-i Building." Despite visiting Kyoto many times before, this accommodation felt like home to us. The staff always welcomed us warmly with smiles saying “Welcome back,” for which we are deeply grateful. Breakfast on the following day was served at Heian Shrine Hall where Hotel VMG staff were present to assist us throughout—from guiding us to arranging taxis afterward—making it feel as though we were dining within their hotel itself. We received tickets for strolling through Heian Shrine's gardens; however, due to heavy rain that day making exploration difficult—they kindly informed us that these tickets have no expiration date so we could use them during our next visit to Kyoto. Breakfast overlooking Heian Shrine’s Japanese garden featured healthy ingredients that were both delicious and nourishing—a one-of-a-kind dining experience amidst breathtaking scenery exclusive to this hotel. We chose “Ryo-i Building” because of its proximity not only for evening performances like Kamogawa Odori but also restaurants such as former Sumitomo Ryo-i Villa Restaurant nearby—and its ideal location allowed easy access from Kiyamachi Street through Pontocho up until Kawaramachi Oike area—perfectly enjoying Kyoto nightlife! During summer-to-autumn river terrace season especially—it felt unbeatable staying here! One minor inconvenience encountered involved numerous steps/stairs within premises causing occasional stumbles… particularly challenging when elderly guests grew weary navigating bathroom/toilet-level differences after long walks outdoors earlier during daytime explorations… Nevertheless—the unique experiences offered exclusively by dispersed-style accommodations combined alongside heartfelt hospitality provided unforgettable memories cherished among all family members alike!

    We booked two Rooms, 202 and 207, along the Kamo River. I stayed in Room 202 but was surprised as it looked different from the photos on IKYU.com; I didn’t know there was a terrace. The terrace obstructed the view of the Kamo River, but having tea on the balcony became a memorable experience. Room 202 had many steps and an unusual layout, which felt a bit unsafe. It hurt my knees. The beverages provided in the Room were luxurious and very delicious. Room 207 offered an amazing view with a perfect panorama of the Kamo River—highly recommended for those who want to enjoy the scenery! The staff always welcomed us with smiles, making our stay enjoyable and relaxing. Thank you for your hospitality!

    It became a wonderful memory.

    I stayed for one night at the end of the year. First, I was impressed during check-in. The staff's wonderful smile and conversation made me feel glad to have chosen this place. It was the best welcome I have ever experienced. The Room had an amazing location with a view of the Kamo River. The meals at the counter were not only delicious but also accompanied by excellent service, making everything a great memory. Thank you for two wonderful days. I hope to visit again someday!

    A new Property experience is now available in Kyoto!

    I stayed for one night during my 4-night, 5-day trip to Kyoto. I was drawn to the concept of utilizing an old building and enjoying the entire town. The communication skills of the staff in charge of check-in at the reception building were excellent, making me look forward to the rest of my stay. The mini fridge in the Room was complimentary, and since drinks, including alcohol, were free in the lounge, the staff suggested exchanging the complimentary sparkling wine for another gift. When I casually mentioned during our conversation that the previous day was my wedding anniversary, I was deeply moved when, after moving to the Hotel in the accommodation building, I received a cookie plate with a congratulatory message. The Room had a great location overlooking the Kamo River, and I thought it would have been nice if the view was also visible from the bath. Although the lounge was a bit small and I didn’t use it, the coffee on the terrace in the morning was very delicious. The breakfast at Heian Shrine with Shuttle Service was special and very enjoyable. I would definitely like to stay again. Thank you very much.

    The hospitality is excellent.

    I stayed at Nene Building 101 with my daughter. The location and the Room were, of course, wonderful, and the staff were friendly and very kind. The staff at Funatsuru were also polite and kind, and the breakfast experience at Heian Shrine Hall was amazing, leaving us with very good memories. I would definitely like to use it again.

    Interesting Experience

    I have used VMG Group Hotels several times. This time, I stayed at the Ryoai building. I had always wanted to stay at the Nene building, but since I made my plans suddenly and the Room I wanted was not available, I chose the Ryoai building. First, regarding check-in, I was suggested by the reception staff to check in at the Ryoai building due to the crowd, but since I was on foot and also wanted to see the Nene building, I requested to check in at the traditional Nene building. Perhaps because it was New Year's, the road leading to the Nene building was extremely congested as mentioned, with heavy traffic. I think those traveling by car should be cautious. The Ryoai building has a different feel compared to the types of Properties I have stayed at with VMG before, giving the impression of a compact designer Hotel. The interior was very stylish, with a formal coffered ceiling, making for an interestingly structured Room. However, there was a mysterious two-tatami-sized space with a step that was difficult to pass through, and the bathroom and sink were located in the basement. While having the bathroom in the basement was not an issue, having the sink there was very inconvenient. I went up and down to the basement more than 10 times for handwashing, washing my face in the morning and evening, and cleaning used dishes. This might be a bit challenging for children or elderly guests. Also, the air conditioner was noisy, so I turned off the one in the bedroom to sleep. The bar lounge was great as it offered both coffee and alcohol. It would be even better if there were some snacks to pair with the drinks. Since I booked a breakfast-only Plan, I had dinner in the Room with a bento box. It was a bit cold, so having a microwave would have been nice. For breakfast, I was looking forward to the meal at the Heian Shrine Hall. It was a valuable experience, and the course-style meal was delicious. If I had to say, I am not a fan of raw or soft-boiled eggs, so scrambled eggs or an omelet would have been preferable. On the way back, I took my time strolling through the Shin'en garden and returned by train and on foot without using a taxi, so I was in a rush until check-out, haha. It was a bit disappointing that I couldn't enjoy coffee on the terrace while leisurely watching the Kamo River. By the way, when you're on the terrace, people walking along the Kamo River often glance in, but the windows are designed so that the interior cannot be seen from the outside (at night, they appear like mirrors from the inside), which is reassuring. I wrote a lot, but overall, I was satisfied. Thank you very much for your hospitality. I would like to use VMG Group again.

    Breakfast at Heian Shrine is delightful.

    Breakfast at Heian Shrine offers a great view and the staff's service was excellent. However, there are issues with the Property. The stairs are steep and the corridors are narrow, there are no handrails in the bath, making it difficult to get out of the tub. Upon entering the room, we were surprised to find a large number of insects despite it being winter. This was likely because the previous guest left the window open (no screen on the window, but there was an electronic mosquito repellent by the window). There were several weakened black insects on the bed sheets and a few on the floor, so we had to deal with pest control ourselves, which was a negative point. The next morning, there were also a large number of insects on the window rails, which was disheartening. There were complimentary drinks and Japanese sweets, which is commendable, but the staff at the accommodation wing seemed amateurish. There was no send-off, making us think they might be part-time female students. A Business Hotel might be better in terms of cost. Please consider improving the training of the accommodation wing staff and the cleaning of the rooms.

    I was completely satisfied.

    Celebrate New Year's Eve on 12/31 with exquisite French cuisine at a restaurant designated as an Important Cultural Property. On the morning of 1/1, enjoy traditional Osechi cuisine while admiring the stunning garden at Heian Shrine. The meal was delightful, followed by a New Year's visit to the shrine and a stroll through the garden—an experience that would be difficult to arrange on your own, making it truly special. The Room was clean, and the view of the Kamo River from the window was lovely. Its proximity to the city and the all-inclusive offerings of beverages, including alcohol and tea, were also very appealing. I would love to stay here again.

    The Best Stay

    I used this Hotel for her birthday, and it turned out to be the best stay ever. At check-in, they served us very delicious sweets and tea. The Room was absolutely lovely, and I was amazed by its spaciousness the moment I stepped in. Later, they asked to borrow the key for a while to adjust the air conditioning, so I handed it over and went out for a meal. When I returned to the Room, there were balloons and a message waiting for us. Even though I hadn’t mentioned it was her birthday, they went above and beyond based on the information from check-in, which deeply moved me. I truly felt glad to have chosen this Hotel, and it also made me reflect on my own attitude toward work. I definitely want to visit again. Of course, the breakfast at Heian Shrine was wonderful, and the bath and amenities were very clean. The sake in the lounge was also incredibly delicious. Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience!

    I used it for the first time, and it was a wonderful Property. The stairs are somewhat steep and may not be suitable for children or the elderly, but it is an excellent Facility for healthy adults. I also recommended it to my daughter and her husband, who do not yet have children.

    It was a wonderful experience.

    Thank you very much. The staff were kind, and the location, right in the heart of Higashiyama, was perfect for sightseeing in the area. The breakfast at the Heian Shrine Hall was a special experience. The taxi voucher provided for our return to the Hotel was more than sufficient, and we made good use of it. We are truly grateful. If I may suggest an improvement, as someone who personally prefers Japanese cuisine over Western cuisine, I would be delighted if there were an option for Japanese breakfast. That said, it was a wonderful stay in Kyoto. Thank you very much.

    The location and the...

    The location and the Facility's ambiance, which allowed us to experience the charm of Kyoto, were truly wonderful. Breakfast at Heian Shrine was filled with a sense of extraordinary. What was disappointing was that there was no hot water in the bathroom of the Room, and the tabi socks listed on the website amenities were not provided. It became a memorable family trip.     A sense of security like being at home, meals are eaten out.

    The old inn has been skillfully renovated, and although there are some tilts, it gives a sense of security as if you own a house in Kyoto. It was very comfortable. The bath and bed were spacious and pleasant. The slightly elevated floor chair was nice. Kodaiji Temple is right in front, and Nene's Path is quiet, but Kiyomizu Temple and Yasaka Shrine are nearby and bustling with foreigners. For breakfast, we took a taxi to the Heian Shrine Hall. We enjoyed a Western set meal while gazing at the Japanese garden.

    I'll go again!

    Kyoto is just over an hour's drive from Osaka, so I visit about once a month, and this time it was an extremely satisfying two days. I had been looking forward to staying at this hotel that I had been curious about for a long time. From the moment I arrived, the staff were very attentive, and everyone who assisted us over the two days was courteous, which naturally made us smile. After arriving, we enjoyed a cold tea in the lounge while checking in, and as I was leisurely reading in the room, I heard the sound of a bell (around 5 PM), which felt so atmospheric... Truly, this is Kyoto... I thought. I was glad to have chosen this room where I could feel that way. I was able to enjoy the hinoki bath more leisurely than usual while looking at the courtyard. Most of all, I was looking forward to breakfast at Heian Shrine and a stroll through the garden, which made me feel elegant from the morning. I was able to spend two days refreshing both body and mind. I would love to visit again. Thank you for taking care of us!
