Even a little inconvenience can feel like part of the escape.

I walked from Sawara Station, but the route was hard to follow and felt far. There is no guidance signage, so I recommend taking a taxi. Due to the Accommodation’s concept, the front desk and the Room are in separate buildings, so you have to carry your luggage between them. It may be designed with arriving by car in mind. For breakfast, you walk to the restaurant in the front-desk building. The building with the Rooms is along the river and has a nice atmosphere, but the road from there to the front-desk building has traffic and narrow sidewalks, so it lacks charm. It was a hot day, so I ended up drenched in sweat going back and forth. I imagine it would be even tougher on a rainy day. The Room was clean, comfortably sized, and easy to relax in. Because of the layout, you can hear some noise from people walking outside, but it was quiet at night. The fridge had one bottle of sake and one bottle of apple juice, both free. Since we stayed as two guests, I wondered why there was only one juice. I couldn’t find a safe, so I wasn’t able to use one. There’s no TV, so I brought a portable TV for emergencies, but it couldn’t receive any signal—maybe because it’s near Narita Airport… The stairs from the entrance to the Room are kept as they were long ago; they’re narrow and steep and felt scary. I wouldn’t recommend this Room for elderly guests. The partitions between the bath area and the toilet/sink area are glass—you can see through from either side. Personally, I couldn’t fully relax because of that. Given this Accommodation’s concept, some inconvenience might be acceptable if you see it as part of an “escape from everyday life”… However, breakfast was extremely disappointing. There weren’t many items; local ingredients weren’t used effectively; and nothing tasted good—the flavors and textures were all poor. At this price point, this breakfast was very disappointing. Also, some of the younger staff seemed a bit overconfident… Rather than reading each guest’s situation or needs well enough first-hand before acting on them properly , they gave me more an impression that they were focused on simply completing their tasks , which made them difficult to approach. I’d appreciate it if even small improvements are made by my next visit.

A town where you can experience the authentic spirit of Edo

Several towns are known as “Koedo,” but Sawara felt like the place where you can most closely experience the everyday atmosphere of Edo. Strolling the streets, sampling local bites, and taking a boat cruise were all easygoing and relaxing to enjoy. The Room we stayed in was renovated from Tadataka Ino’s rice storehouse, and the lattice door at the entrance and the exposed beams created a wonderful ambiance. It was especially perfect at night and early in the morning. The meals were also excellent, featuring local ingredients. Thank you for such a comfortable stay.

The meals were very delicious. The staff were kind and pleasant. I appreciated the bath’s reheating function. The bath salts were also great. It was a Room that beautifully renovated a traditional storehouse.

Staying in a Room like this is also a wonderful experience.

I stayed at AOI as a solo traveler. The Room was bright, and I could look out over the garden, which made for a relaxing stay. The meal portions suited me well in my sixties, and everything was delicious—the sauces and dressings had a familiar Japanese-style flavor. Next time, I’d like to visit on a sunny day.

    The meals are truly excellent.

This was my second stay at a NIPPONIA Accommodation (the first was in Chichibu). Since I understood the concept, I didn’t come with excessive expectations and simply enjoyed a straightforward stay. With a clean Room, attentive service, and delicious food all coming together, I was reminded of what makes Japan so special. Japan is amazing! That said, whether in Chichibu or Sawara, the wine selection feels far too limited... When I visited, not only was champagne by the glass unavailable, but even white wine by the glass was sold out (sadly). It seemed there might have been a pairing option without listed labels, but I didn’t order it because I wasn’t sure what would be served. I’d be happy to see a more robust list. Given how high the standard of the cuisine is, I think many guests would appreciate an improved wine selection. I’ve seen comments saying that noise can be an issue depending on where your Room is located, but we had no problems at all in the YOTA building. It’s also close to the restaurant building, which is convenient. I hope this helps anyone considering a stay. I’ll be staying at another property in the group again soon. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

    Little Edo

It was a wonderful Accommodation where we could stay as if we were part of the historic streetscape! We stayed in Room 501. It was a Room created by renovating a storehouse from Ino Tadataka’s former residence. We were able to relax at our own pace and take an early-morning walk through the streets when no one was around. There’s one thing I’m curious about, and I asked by phone as well: on the building where we stayed, there was a plaque that said “Traditional Building No. 002,” and the surrounding buildings also had numbers. I couldn’t stop wondering what No. 001 is. I asked the staff cleaning Ino Tadataka’s former residence, the museum staff, and the Hotel staff, but no one knew… If you find out in the future, I’d love it if you could let me know.

    Dream Accommodation

We stayed here as a family of three with our daughter to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The atmosphere was lovely, and the amenities were well provided. The food was also very delicious, and thank you for kindly preparing a birthday plate despite our last-minute request. Overall, we were satisfied; however, there were a few points we noticed in the kura Accommodation where we stayed: (1) the wash area was small, and since there was no mirror in the Room, it was difficult to do makeup; (2) the entrance had an old-style glass sliding door, so we were concerned about security; (3) because the Room was spacious, the air conditioner did not cool it well. That said, Sawara’s townscape is wonderful, and we would like to visit again.

    This was our second ...

This was our second stay, following last year. As we were sharing one Room with four people (my daughter and her husband included), we contacted the property in advance and had two extra beds prepared. The Room was spacious, so it didn’t feel cramped at all. The meals were creative French cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients, and it was well worth the trip from Tokyo. We were also given explanations of wines and other drinks to pair with the food, which we really appreciated. Even though they were extremely busy, they printed a flyer for the sake brewery festival the next day and provided attentive guidance, which was a great help. We would love to visit again.

We relaxed and fully enjoyed a refreshing escape from everyday life.

I wanted to stay with my dog, and after searching I chose this Accommodation. The spacious Room of over 80 m² seemed to make my dog very happy. There was also a private dog run (more like a lovely garden). Since it’s a traditional old house, the sliding door at the back was a bit hard to open and close, and because the weather was bad we could hear the wind quite loudly. But that nostalgic atmosphere actually felt comfortable to me. The air conditioner worked well, so it wasn’t cold. The carefully prepared meals were also great—the local vegetables and meat were delicious. (We’re a big-eating family, so the portions felt a little small.) *You can request optional add-ons. I’d love to stay in one of the other Rooms as well.

I stayed at MIYAKO303 with my dog. The Room was spacious and spotless, just like the photos, and I was very satisfied with the space. The bath was also a large hinoki (cypress) bath, which made for a relaxing stay with a special feel. Since I wanted to spend most of my time unwinding in the Room, I really appreciated the in-room dining and complimentary drinks. The meal portions are on the smaller side, so it might be a good idea to bring a late-night snack. It felt like enjoying small amounts of high-quality food. The next day, I explored the historic preservation district as well, and with a 12:00 checkout, it was great to be able to leave my luggage and go out. The dog amenities were well stocked, and it was especially helpful that plenty of pet toilet sheets were provided from the start. There aren’t many places where you can stay with your dog in the preservation district, so this was a valuable experience. Thank you very much.

    Highly Satisfied

Our New Year's stay was delightful, with activity suggestions that made our time enjoyable. After dinner, unexpected snow fell, but the thoughtful gesture of providing a car ride to our room ensured comfort. Thanks to this, even my elderly mother had a pleasant stay. Although the bath was not an onsen, the wooden aroma made it very relaxing. If I may add, having a kotatsu in the tatami room would have been even better... This is an accommodation we would love to visit again in another season!

First Stay at a Heike Accommodation

It was excellent. The room, meals, and staff were perfect. The atmosphere of the town was charming, and the eel (from Yamadaya) was very delicious. I rated the bath and facility a 4 only because it was cold due to the season. Floor heating would be nice, but perhaps even the cold adds to the charm! It became a wonderful accommodation experience. Thank you very much. Also, it is very convenient for visiting Togoku Sanja Shrines.

    Recommended for sightseeing in Sawara

Conveniently located near the center of Sawara, the accommodation provided a comfortable stay. While the bathroom and wash area were somewhat small due to the renovation of an old house, the room was spacious with a terrace, allowing for a relaxing time. The staff had detailed knowledge about nearby shops and even dinner ingredients, showing their dedication to ensuring guests enjoy Sawara, which was truly impressive.

    A Wonderful Escape

The streets of Sawara were charming, and the accommodation had a wonderful atmosphere, allowing us to enjoy a truly special experience. Dinner was carefully prepared with local ingredients and was absolutely delicious. That evening, we were thrilled to watch the Sawara Bayashi performance up close. However, since it was right in front of us, we found ourselves pausing our meal and couldn't fully enjoy the dessert at a leisurely pace, which was a bit disappointing. Additionally, we were somewhat surprised by the simplicity of breakfast. Having stayed at over 50 accommodations before, this was the most modest breakfast we've encountered. Lastly, the staff's hospitality was excellent; their service deserves full marks!

This is the place to stay when visiting Sawara.

It was an accommodation we found by chance, but it turned out to be a wonderful place. We were able to relax, and both the accommodation and meals were highly satisfying for my parents, daughter, and myself. We highly recommend including both breakfast and dinner during your stay. The staff were all lovely and welcoming. Since it’s nearby, we would love to visit again.

A stroll while enjoying the scenery of Koedo is truly exceptional.

I stayed for one night in a Room of a former traditional restaurant merchant's house. The Room had a beautiful garden and was very charming. While preserving the old atmosphere, places like the washbasin and restroom were modernized and clean, making my stay very comfortable. The meals were delicious and visually delightful as well. One downside was that the bathwater temperature was lukewarm; I would have preferred it to be hotter.

Feel at home in this city.

NIPPONIA accommodations may have an image of being geared towards inbound travelers, but after staying for the first time, I felt that it is an accommodation Japanese people should experience. When traveling, you want to fully immerse yourself in the town and enjoy local ingredients. This place fulfills those wishes while also reminding you of Japan's traditions. The rooms are renovated from local traditional houses, making you feel as if you've been living in this town for years. The cuisine not only uses local ingredients but also incorporates seasonings and beverages from long-established local shops, offering a deliciousness that makes you glad you came on this trip. Thank you to all the staff for your very courteous service!

The sweet sake served at breakfast is incredibly delicious.

The meals at the Hotel operated by VMG exceeded my expectations, with both dinner and breakfast being absolutely delicious. I was particularly amazed by the amazake. Although I usually don't like amazake, the one served here was completely different from anything I've had before! It had a sweetness reminiscent of fruit, so much so that I wanted to take some home. Additionally, I loved the scent of the shampoo and conditioner in the bath so much that I ended up purchasing them online. I look forward to visiting again!

Single-story house for a luxurious stay

Staying in the dream single-story house was amazing. The cypress bath was perfect for relaxing. In the morning, sitting on the garden chair and reading a book felt luxurious. The dried sweet potato slices in the Room were also delicious—thank you! The restaurant meals were excellent, and even the BGM was pleasant. I truly enjoyed escaping into an extraordinary world. Thank you very much!

A Traditional Japanese House with My Son and Dog

Thank you very much for your stay. We chose this accommodation for a unique experience with our dog. Overall, we were satisfied. It would have been perfect if we had known in advance that the bath temperature could be adjusted from the sink area rather than the bath itself. We also appreciated being able to use the dog-exclusive bath. The meals were full of local delights, and the local beef at dinner was incredibly delicious. It would be nice to have a wider variety of alcoholic beverages, including more wine options. This might be asking too much, but an earlier check-in by even 30 minutes would make it absolutely perfect! The private garden for dogs was just right for our miniature dachshund, allowing us to enjoy a stress-free and precious time together. Sharing the same sleeping space with our dog was also wonderful. We stayed in Miyako 305 room.

    I had always wanted ...

I had always wanted to stay here, and I was finally able to visit with my family of three. The Room and meals were truly wonderful, and even after returning home, we talked about wanting to visit again as a family. The Room had high ceilings, a sofa on the first floor, another sofa along with tatami mats and beds on the second floor, providing a spacious area for us to relax. Being in a relatively new building, the fresh scent of wood was refreshing. Additionally, having three beds was very convenient for our family of three. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast during our stay. The French dinner featured intricate details in every dish—delicate and delicious. Breakfast offered a complete change with simple Japanese cuisine that highlighted the natural flavors of the ingredients with gentle seasoning that made it easy to enjoy. Both meals used local ingredients unique to this area and Hotel; just dining here is worth the trip alone! Overall, thanks to the exceptional hospitality from all staff members, it became a truly pleasant journey for us.

Experience an extraordinary escape near the metropolitan area.

I love VMG's concept, and this was my sixth stay with them, but my first experience near the Tokyo metropolitan area. Previously, I stayed at accommodations in places like Takehara, Naramachi, Taketa, and Tamba Sasayama when traveling far from home. However, Sawara is conveniently accessible by highway bus from Tokyo Station and still offers all the wonderful qualities of VMG. It made me realize there are different ways to enjoy their accommodations. The guest room had a historical charm that felt special. Staying and dining in buildings seamlessly integrated into the old townscape provided an extraordinary and luxurious experience. The delicious French cuisine featuring local ingredients added to the appeal of this accommodation while maintaining excellent accessibility. Dinner at a renovated restaurant housed in an old mirin brewery was delightful. The dishes incorporated fermented ingredients like sake lees unique to Sawara's culture. The kasujiru soup served for breakfast was also delicious. The guest room I stayed in was a renovated warehouse-style maisonette with exposed beams visible from the upstairs bedroom—a detail that excited me during my stay. The freezer stocked with complimentary drinks added to the enjoyment as I relaxed with some alcohol in hand. This accommodation is easily accessible from Tokyo, making it perfect for a quick getaway when I need some relaxation—I look forward to visiting again!

    Relaxing time

We stayed as a couple and used Room YATA103. This room was conveniently close to the restaurant (reception building) where meals are served. Nearby, there was a mirin manufacturing factory, which is also used in the restaurant's dishes, and strolling through the charming streets was a very enriching experience. The spacious room had a private garden, and the bath was a cypress bath. When filled with water, the scent of cypress spread, providing a soothing experience. We chose an inclusive Plan, so the refrigerator was stocked with sake, wine, beer, etc., and we could order more when it ran out. The attention to detail in the interior and drinks was noticeable. For meals, we had a French course for dinner and a Japanese set meal for breakfast. Since my husband has many food dislikes, we wrote them down in advance, and they were considerate, allowing us to enjoy a very delicious meal. My husband was also pleased. If I may express my thoughts, I felt it would be nice to have options other than French cuisine for dinner. The meals were very healthy, and I felt my body appreciated it. Overall, it was a very good Hotel, and I would like to use it again. What I felt would be nice to have in the room was a TV. I thought it would be great to enjoy a movie in such a room. Also, since it was a very dry season, the humidifier provided couldn't keep up, and it was quite dry. I felt it would be nice to have another humidifier. I thought that samue would be more suitable than yukata for various body types and easier to use as room wear. All in all, it was a wonderful Hotel. I will use it again. Thank you very much.

Breakfast boat to enjoy with changing scenery

Activities Breakfast Boat Enjoyed with Changing Scenery I signed up for this, but I was disappointed as follows: 1. The photos were completely different from reality, and I was surprised by the exaggerated advertising by Nipponia. 2. In the morning, when I went to the dock, the original course was unavailable due to mechanical failure, so we went back and forth on the same course. 3. The boatman was a nice person, which was a relief.

    Stay with Your Beloved Dog

This stay was realized despite various twists and turns, causing great inconvenience. The local food was wonderful and delicious, of course, but the staff, everyone who came to me, explained everything perfectly. There was also the rare choice of sake pairing, and this was explained thoroughly, which honestly surprised me. The sake and local French cuisine matched very well. I underestimated Sawara. The room was a historical building, but it was renovated to meet modern needs, and it was very wonderful. It is relatively close to home and a dog-friendly hotel, so I would like to make it my regular stay. Thank you for all your help.

Pros and Cons of Traditional Japanese Houses

I had always wanted to stay here, so I visited with my elderly parents. I am grateful for the various consultations provided before our stay. We were satisfied with the building that blended into the charming town and the guest room... however, after we went to bed early, we heard the sound of children running around and screaming in the next room, the noise of chairs being dragged repeatedly, singing, and loud conversations (we could hear the content of the conversations clearly). We endured it, but after 10:30 PM, we heard a "thud" against the wall and contacted the front desk for assistance. This is not a cheap property, so we were given an explanation that soundproofing is difficult due to the characteristics of the old house. I felt that it might be better to provide an explanation about manners after 10 PM or to restrict the use by young children, so that families with children and other guests staying in adjacent rooms do not have an unpleasant experience.

    Dreams come true.

The hotel featured in the first volume of the manga "Ohitorisama Hotel," which inspired me to start solo traveling. I stayed in the exact same YATA Building Room 101 as the protagonist. The room was just as described, providing the expected satisfaction. The shape of the windows, the lighting, and the cushion designs all had a touch of elegance. The fact that it wasn't overly stylish contributed to a sense of comfort. The bath was separate from the room, giving it an annex-like feel, which added an extraordinary touch and made the experience very exciting. The meals lived up to the VMG Group quality. While enjoying some drinks, I mentioned my fondness for sake, and they recommended some limited-time offerings, showcasing their hospitality. The sake choices they suggested were excellent, making the dinner even more satisfying. This might be nitpicking, but it would have been even better if they used the word "fragrance" instead of "smell" when making recommendations. Lastly, I suggest thoroughly researching local events before your visit. The week after my stay was a festival, and the movement of floats and gatherings made the nights lively, which wasn't conducive to a relaxing atmosphere. While it might be seen as blending into the town's daily life, the noise could be slightly stressful if you're looking to unwind in your room. I look forward to revisiting during a quieter time to enjoy the peaceful town. Visiting Ayaka Shiokawa. There was also a manga in the room, which was heartwarming. Not a negative point, but a concern: The bedroom and main living space are on the second floor, while the toilet and sink are only on the first floor. This might be slightly inconvenient for older guests or those with children. For those who can enjoy the inconvenience, it's an outstanding property.

    Relaxing

This was our third stay at NIPPONIA. Both previous stays left a lasting impression. I had visited Sawara on a day trip before and found it to be a town with a very charming atmosphere, so I had always wanted to visit again. It was a good season, but the first day was drizzly. The next day, the rain cleared up, and I took an early morning walk along the river. Since it wasn't yet tourist time, I leisurely took photos and strolled while admiring the old houses. The most attractive feature was the bath, which allowed reheating just like at home. Being a bath enthusiast, I reheated the bath several times and soaked leisurely, forgetting the busyness of daily life. The meals were another highlight of NIPPONIA, with Western cuisine for dinner and Japanese cuisine for breakfast. The focus on local production for local consumption allowed us to enjoy delicious local vegetables and fruits, making for an enjoyable dining experience. We bought Sawara-grown mushrooms at the roadside station and cooked them right away. I look forward to finding and staying at another NIPPONIA.
