    A Nostalgic Onsen Accommodation

I had read the information in advance, but the road to the Accommodation was quite narrow, which made me a little uneasy. Since there are two routes, if you’re concerned, it might be a good idea to contact the Accommodation beforehand and ask. However, from the moment I arrived and saw the entrance gate, I was truly impressed by its charming atmosphere. At reception, I was happy to be greeted so politely. It was rainy and chilly, but they warmed up my Room and even provided a hanten jacket—such warm hospitality. Both dinner and breakfast were very delicious, and I finished everything. After breakfast, I enjoyed the coffee service across the bridge on foot. The Onsen was great—not only in the Room but also with private baths that we could enjoy. Thank you very much.

My mother fell and was injured on the stone steps. The hot spring is great, but please be careful with the walkways.

I stayed at “Kakatei” in a detached guest room with my elderly mother. The Onsen is the real thing. The in-room open-air Onsen bath and the silky feel of the pH 10.3 water were wonderful, and the freshly grilled salted yamame trout was delicious. The fully private dining table seating was also comfortable for my mother. However, my mother fell and was injured on the last stone steps on the way to the dining area. There are a great many stairs between the detached rooms and the dining area, and even the private open-air bath has very poor footing. After she fell, they provided a compress, and only then told us, “Guests with mobility issues may keep their shoes on while moving around inside.” We also learned later that there is a service entrance route. Both could have been prevented with a single word upon arrival—we had informed them in advance that we were traveling with an elderly guest. The service was among the most disappointing I have experienced at any Accommodation. Although they asked my height for a yukata, it did not fit; although I told them we had lots of luggage for a Multiple Night Stay, there was no help carrying it when we left, so I carried everything myself while sweating heavily. Even confirming meal times felt intimidating. At dinner, everything except the soup dish and yamame trout was set out from the start, giving an impression that proper dashi had not been prepared. Light bulbs had been removed in the changing area; at the private open-air bath there was a kerosene smell from the heating boiler. An extra bath towel cost 200 yen, and on-site payment was cash only. That said, I believe these issues are not about individual staff attitudes but about operations overall. This Accommodation has built up ratings of around 4.5 across booking sites—especially dinner and service at 4.6–4.7—so it seems these standards used to be met. When I asked, I was told there are only eight private dining rooms, so only half of their sixteen guest rooms can be operated at once, and they are also short-staffed. This is my speculation: if occupancy must be kept to half capacity, revenue is limited as well—making it difficult to hire more people or invest in improvements to Facility upkeep. It felt as though that same constraint has taken away time for making dashi properly, serving dishes one by one when they should arrive hot or fresh (and carrying luggage), or even offering brief guidance. The Onsen is authentic—and this is an Accommodation that used to be highly regarded—which is why I hope they will at least bring back what costs nothing: proactive communication upon arrival. If you have concerns about mobility or balance issues (or are traveling with someone who does), avoid staying in a detached room; confirm for yourself whether you may wear shoes indoors and whether there is an alternative route via a service entrance. For those arriving by car: their official website warns that car navigation systems may guide you over a narrow bridge road; however as of August 2026 Google Maps guided us via an acceptable route (turn right at Cafe MAKOTO). I recommend simply following Google Maps—though even on that road two cars cannot pass each other easily without one yielding space first.)

A truly wonderful Accommodation—if you can book it, you’re lucky.

Because I live in Kanagawa and this area is so close, I had never looked for Accommodation around here before. Thanks to IKYU, I was able to discover such a wonderful Accommodation so nearby. Although I had seen some comments from other guests complaining about the staff’s service, every member of the team provided warm, hospitality-filled service without exception, and I truly enjoyed my stay in the best possible mood. This is a very quiet Accommodation with only 16 Rooms, and there are Onsen not only in the Rooms but also private baths and a large public bath. The meals were plentiful and well balanced; we were delighted to enjoy grilled char (iwana) with salt and Koshu beef as well. The road leading to the Accommodation is narrow, but as it is the only property there, it felt like a hidden hot spring retreat—absolutely wonderful. Even in this time of labor shortages, an elderly staff member kindly took care of us attentively until the very end. Knowing how demanding it must be late at night and early in the morning left me deeply impressed. They even saw us off until we were completely out of sight. I would love to visit again; however, we were told that only 8 of the 16 Rooms are currently in operation, making Reservations difficult to secure. I am truly grateful for an unforgettable trip accompanied by the soothing sound of the river flowing throughout the night.

Every year, we look forward to visiting for the baths and meals. The cherry blossoms had started to bloom, and the garden view was lovely.

We had a very relaxing stay.

From the Check Reservation phone call to guidance on arrival and during meals, and all the way through checkout, the staff’s polite and refined manner of speaking was outstanding. The seasonal dishes were just as delicious as last time, and even the large public bath—which was lukewarm and didn’t fully warm me up—didn’t bother me. I also had a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji, which I couldn’t see on my previous visit, making my stay very comfortable. I’d love to return next time with my grandchildren, but it’s disappointing that children don’t seem to be allowed.

    Far from what I expected.

The quality of the attendant’s service greatly influences one’s overall impression of the Accommodation. That is how I felt. The attendant who seemed to be in charge was unskilled in every respect—explanations, manner of speaking, and conduct. From the moment we were shown to our Room, something felt off. She spoke without any energy and seemed gloomy. Her choice of words was inappropriate. Perhaps she lacked confidence; she spoke haltingly, leaving us feeling uneasy throughout. It would have been helpful to be told where the yukata and padded jacket were kept—especially since they were stored separately. Please provide more training on meal service as well. The char-grilled iwana (salt-grilled) was served with emphasis on it being freshly grilled, but it was placed facing the wrong way from the guest’s perspective. I love Onsen and have stayed at many Ryokan, but this was a first for me. I want cheerful service and correct presentation; otherwise, “We’ll serve it at just the right time—it’s freshly grilled” is wasted. The fish itself was very delicious, which made it all the more disappointing. Service overall was slow and clumsy during meals, making dining stressful rather than enjoyable—something I have never experienced before. I will note that every dish tasted excellent. I am posting photos; everything looked beautiful as well, and you could tell care had been taken with the tableware too. The rice cooked at the table (bamboo shoots and butterbur mixed rice) was also truly delicious. About the Room… there were spots where I could feel dents in the tatami mats, which bothered me a little. Smoking is allowed, but I did not notice much lingering odor. About the baths… an outdoor tub had a cover sheet “to keep it warm.” At the large public bath’s open-air bath there was a sheet sized to fit it as well, but removing it took some effort due to its weight—and putting it back on again was also heavy work. In the end I only went to that large public bath once. From late autumn through early spring this task will likely be required, so please be prepared when you visit this Accommodation/Ryokan during that period. (The private open-air bath tub is not very large, so it wasn’t nearly as difficult.) Other… there is no cold-water pitcher provided in advance in your Room/Accommodation area (as applicable). I don’t think there was a vending machine either; you may want to bring your own drinks/snacks if needed. (They do sell their original bottled spring water: 300 yen per 500 ml bottle.)

An open-air bath and a massage chair are also available.

We stayed in a Room with a massage chair and an open-air bath. The Accommodation suddenly appears after driving up a mountain road. It’s perfect for relaxing, surrounded by nature. A courteous senior staff member kindly explained everything and escorted us to our Room. The large public bath isn’t very big, so it may be ideal for those who prefer to unwind in their Room. We had both dinner and breakfast in the dining area, and there was more than we could finish at both meals. One disappointment was the bedding. It seemed to be a single mattress laid directly on the tatami, and it was too firm for me. My companion slept with an extra mat layered on top. It may be a good choice for those who want to slow down and forget about time. (Because it’s deep in the mountains, the internet connection may not be very reliable.)

Are we really on the right road?

There are two ways to get there. The route your car navigation suggests has a narrow bridge at the end, so large vehicles can’t pass! If you follow the directions on your phone, you’ll take a mountain road with some very narrow, cliff-edge sections. However, there are signs along the way, so you can arrive without getting lost. When we finally reached the Accommodation, we were warmly welcomed and offered a matcha welcome drink. All Rooms have private open-air baths and are very quiet. If your building isn’t an annex, the large public bath is close by. The dining area is in another building up a stone staircase (it may be tough for guests who have difficulty walking), but you can enjoy your meal in a private room for each group. They said they only accept about half of their 16 Rooms’ capacity per day. Because of that, we rarely ran into other guests, and the large public bath was almost like having it to ourselves.

It was a very nice Ryokan.

I stayed here with my elderly parents on what might be our last trip together. It was a wonderful ryokan, just as the reviews described. The cuisine and garden were particularly outstanding, and we were very satisfied. My parents were also very pleased. Since our room was in a separate building, it was a bit far to the dining area and large public bath, so I rated the facilities 4 stars. However, overall, it is an excellent accommodation. I would love to visit again.

    It was a wonderful stay.

This was an accommodation I really wanted to visit after reading the reviews, and staying here exceeded my expectations. As many have mentioned and as indicated by the accommodation itself, the route can be a bit tricky to navigate. We got lost too, but when we mustered up the courage to proceed thinking "it can't possibly be this way," a beautiful garden and an impressive accommodation suddenly appeared. From the warm welcome by the staff at arrival to being greeted at the nostalgic entrance by a Nakai-san (attendant), you immediately feel valued. Our assigned attendant was incredibly hospitable, taking care of everything from guidance during our stay to meal service while providing thoughtful touches and valuable information that made this trip unforgettable. Thank you so much. The onsen facilities are excellent, with what seems like open-air baths in every room, two private baths available for use if unoccupied, and separate large communal baths for men and women. Despite there being quite a number of guests staying at the same time, we rarely encountered others outside of meal times, making it a very peaceful environment overall. Perhaps due to its location or other factors, there were no inbound tourists or families with children during our stay—another reason why it felt so tranquil here. All onsen facilities were impeccably maintained in terms of water temperature control and cleanliness; I enjoyed soaking multiple times. As for meals—just as many have noted—the dinner portions are particularly generous! Even though I usually eat quite a lot myself, I ended up leaving some rice behind despite how delicious everything was (my companion managed to finish theirs). The salt-grilled char fish was exceptional; following Nakai-san's recommendation to enjoy it freshly grilled from head to tail turned out delightful—it’s probably one of the best river fish dishes we've ever had! Every dish showcased creativity with perfect use of dashi broth that reflected pride in their craft. The garden here is especially stunning—perhaps enhanced by visiting during peak autumn foliage season when maples were vibrant red—which added another layer of unforgettable charm throughout our stay. Maintaining such beauty must require tremendous effort daily; it's clear this is achieved through consistent dedication over time. From arrival until departure—including their thoughtful send-off—we felt completely satisfied throughout our experience here. This is one of Japan's few remaining "authentic" ryokans where traditional hospitality shines brightly—I would love nothing more than another visit someday!

    Full of Showa-era charm!

I had known about this accommodation from TV commercials for over 40 years, and this was my first time staying here. It felt a bit different from the image I had, with a nostalgic Showa-era vibe present throughout the place. In a way, it was good in a different sense than I expected. The aged atmosphere, slight wear and tear, creaking floors and doors—all of these gave an authentic Showa experience. For those who want to feel like they've stepped back in time, I highly recommend it. The meals were satisfying in both quantity and taste. The baths were also enjoyable with multiple open-air options featuring gentle water that felt kind to the skin. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't great during my stay, so I'd love to visit again in spring or autumn next time!

    I had a relaxing stay.

We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my 80-year-old father's birthday with my parents. Although the facility is old, it was very clean, so the age of the building did not bother us much. Since we stayed in a detached room, we walked outside to reach the onsen and dining area, but listening to the pleasant sounds of birds and insects made us feel very refreshed and open-minded. We used all types of baths available: private baths, large public baths, and an open-air bath in our room—all were very enjoyable. The meals were delicious, and the service was excellent as well. However, one issue... there were no vending machines available. We were advised to buy drinks at the station beforehand but didn’t expect such a lack of drink options here. The only water sold at the shop was onsen water bottles which are expensive; once the shop closes, you can’t buy anything else either. The fridge only had beer and Pocari Sweat—no mineral water—and there wasn’t even a water dispenser in the large public bath area as we had assumed there would be. While they provided one 1-liter bottle of complimentary water for our stay, it wasn’t enough for three people. Thankfully hot water was provided via an electric kettle; we managed by drinking warm water or cooling it down in bottles using our fridge. Not having a water dispenser in an onsen accommodation’s large public bath seems somewhat unsafe during warmer months especially if hydration isn’t easily accessible otherwise. If placing dispensers isn’t possible perhaps providing 500ml bottled waters per guest (even if charged) or stocking standard mineral waters inside fridges could help improve convenience significantly! While overall this stay felt wonderful—it’s worth noting future summer visitors should bring plenty extra drinks themselves!

    Repeat visit

Thank you for your hospitality again. Although the building seems to be older, it is a quiet and pleasant accommodation. The staff appear to be dedicated to providing proper service, which is appreciated. The meals are also delicious. I would love to visit again.

    I had a relaxing stay.

The accommodation was located on narrow and winding roads that I couldn't navigate myself, but the shuttle service made it very convenient. I visited after exploring the Saruhashi Bridge near the previous station, which took a little over 20 minutes one way. The staff provided excellent and courteous service, making my stay very pleasant. The meals were delicious, and there was a massage chair in the room, allowing me to fully relax. The next morning, I took a walk to Mount Oisei and enjoyed stunning views of Mount Fuji. Although my bus was at 10:00 AM, I had coffee on the terrace at 9:30 while admiring Mount Fuji. I will definitely visit again—highly recommended! Thank you very much!

I unexpectedly came across a great accommodation.

I changed my travel plans and happened to book this accommodation, but it turned out to be a wonderful place. The facility itself is a historic old building, but the rooms have been renovated and were very clean. The staff, especially the experienced attendants, provided excellent service with a sense of stability. They interacted with guests at an appropriate distance based on their reactions—not too pushy—and offered recommendations when asked, making our stay very comfortable. The dinner was seasonal and well-prepared; my wife particularly enjoyed the appetizer of "butterbur miso" garnished with almonds. The tempura served with cherry blossoms and sea lettuce was also delicious. If I had to mention one thing, I found some of the breakfast dishes a bit too salty for my taste. This accommodation is quietly nestled in the mountains, but there are famous spots for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves nearby. I would love to visit again during those seasons.

    The crucial bath is...

It was a stay during the severe winter, and the property was cold throughout. The guest room had single-pane windows and poor insulation in the building itself, so while my head was warm, my feet were cold. The meals were plentiful, but the ingredients and taste left something to be desired. As for the crucial bath, the indoor bath in the large public bath had too little water and it was too lukewarm. The open-air bath was covered with an insulating sheet due to the cold, requiring you to peel it off each time you enter and cover it again when you leave—a hassle. The staff members were all kind and left a good impression, but this might be a property best avoided in winter.

The perfect hidden Stays where you can enjoy Onsen in seclusion!

Good access from the city center for senior couples traveling by car. No traffic jams from the Otsuki Interchange. Although you have to drive up a narrow mountain road, it's not a problem if you're used to driving. Once you pass through the gate of the Property, you feel the atmosphere of a hidden retreat away from the ordinary. You can fully enjoy the Onsen with the open-air bath, massage chair, and indoor bath in the Room. The meals were also delicious. We appreciated the provision of yukata and samue. It would have been even better if there were bathrobes... This hidden retreat is recommended for the generation that finds traffic jams tiring and wants to enjoy Onsen. We definitely want to visit again.

Only the improvement of the Wi-Fi environment should be expedited.

It was my first stay, but the atmosphere of the Stays, the temperature and size of the Room's bath, and the quality of the meals were all impeccable. I was surprised by the narrowness of the road leading to the Property, but the beauty of the autumn leaves, which were at their peak upon arrival, was impressive. There is only one request I have for this Property: the improvement of the wifi environment. On IKYU, it was stated that "wifi is available in the Room." Other travel sites mentioned "wifi connection available except in some parts of the building," but I did not expect that I would not be able to connect in the Room. Indeed, the Property's website and the Room's pamphlet mentioned that there might be places where connection is difficult due to signal conditions, but the date was from 2018, six years ago, and I did not think the issue would remain unresolved for six years. Additionally, I heard that Rakuten Mobile could not be used in the Room, but since the area around Maki Onsen was included in Rakuten's connection area, I have already reported this to Rakuten. There was guidance that if I took my PC from the Room to the location with the banquet hall connected by a corridor, wifi would be available, so I moved locations as needed this time. However, as soon as I entered the building of "Seoto no Yakata" where the Room is located, there was no internet connection. I sincerely hope that some measures, such as installing a wireless wifi repeater or enabling wired LAN, will be taken. Despite the wifi troubles, I was still satisfied with my stay due to the high quality of the staff. The staff in charge of the dining area were well-informed about the wifi troubles and were very considerate. The staff member who first came to the Room due to the wifi trouble sincerely thought hard about what they could do to help. The high quality of the staff is truly remarkable. I would like to express my gratitude to those who took care of me.

    The destination is a paradise.

From National Route 20, enter the Kuwanishi Shimomaki Line and head north. Follow the car navigation system and turn left, and you'll suddenly find yourself in an alleyway sandwiched between houses. Descend a narrow slope and cross a bridge that barely fits a passenger car to reach the Onsen. There is also a slightly longer route that the car navigation system doesn't suggest, which has a somewhat wider road that microbuses can pass through, but passing is difficult and caution is needed to avoid slipping off the road. Upon reaching the Onsen, there is a sufficiently large parking lot. In such a remote area, there are luxurious and large buildings lined up on a spacious site. The age cannot be denied. You take off your shoes and are welcomed with matcha, and after walking (climbing) along a long corridor that follows the undulations of the site, you reach the Room, which is a genuine tatami room with authentic fittings and fixtures. On the veranda of the wooden floor on the river side, there is a massage chair and a chair. Outside the sash door, there is a wooden deck with a windbreak made of a bamboo screen covered with acrylic and a fine lattice door fitted with acrylic. There is a 2-meter cypress bathtub and deck chairs lined up, and the temperature is just right all day long. Adjacent to the wooden deck is a large unit bath with an indoor bath. Below, you can hear the sound of the river flowing. The large bath is in a separate building shaped like a warehouse, and the stone open-air bath overlooking the river is refreshing and clean. To reach the dining area, proceed further down the long corridor, go out to the garden, and climb a slope covered with a roof over stepping stones arranged in a stair-like manner. There are private rooms that seem to have been converted from a large hall. From the front desk (reception), the dining table is at the height of the third floor, and there is no elevator. Breakfast is served in the same Room.

A wonderful Ryokan where you can be soothed by Onsen and the blessings of the mountains.

We stayed in a detached room for one night and two days. When we mentioned during the reservation that I was pregnant, they kindly changed the welcome drink to non-caffeinated tea and provided rooibos tea bags for dinner, as there was only sencha in the room. I was pleased with their thoughtful service. The room was a Japanese-style room with futons. I often experience body aches when sleeping on futons, and since one futon seemed insufficient, I used two futons to sleep. The bath in the room was set to 40 degrees, which was just the right temperature, not too hot. The temperature of the private bath felt about the same. (Note that there is no washing area in the private bath.) Dinner was served in a private room at the dining area, featuring kaiseki cuisine using local mountain delicacies. In addition to appetizers, there were dishes like pork simmered in grated daikon, salt-grilled char, carp tempura, grilled beef, sweet potato rice, and dessert, offering a wide variety. All the dishes were delicious, but since the portions are large, I recommend going with an empty stomach. The next morning's breakfast was also served in the same room at the dining area. The rice itself was delicious, and there were plenty of side dishes, so I ended up having seconds. Although both the guest room and the facility felt a bit old, the cleanliness was impressive. The hospitality was warm and homey, and I felt their intention to let guests relax and unwind at the property. *Please note that to reach the dining area and the large public bath from the detached room, you need to climb stairs, which might not be suitable for those with mobility issues.
