    Wonderful Accommodation

As it was my first trip to Wakayama, I researched a lot before choosing this place. I wasn’t sure what a traditional house stay would be like, but it was wonderful. The reception staff were great, the welcome drink was a nice touch, and the hand-drawn guide was easy to understand. The Room we stayed in had stylish lighting, smelled pleasantly of wood, and we really appreciated the complimentary drinks in the fridge and the ice cream service. The reception desk was closed after hours, but we could contact you via LINE, so it wasn’t inconvenient at all. Everything was handled with such care that we felt very comfortable throughout our stay. Also, our Plan included one free use of the coin laundry, which was a big help. We were truly satisfied with our stay! If I had to mention something, my husband bumped his head a few times at the entrance and elsewhere (haha). And while it was nice that we could choose loungewear, it might have been even better if we could choose both a gown and samue (two options). Someday I’d love to stay in one of your other houses as well. Thank you very much.

    It was absolutely wonderful.

It was our first time staying here!! Our dog was thrilled with the spacious yard. In the evening, we relaxed with a BBQ and a campfire—such a great time. There were also drinks and amenities provided, so it’s a perfect 100/100!! We went ahead and made another Reservation. We look forward to staying again next time!!

Delighted to have a cold plunge bath! An Accommodation where you can easily enjoy a private sauna.

This traditional Japanese house with a sauna (and a separate indoor bath as well) was perfect for relaxing without worrying about time or other people’s eyes. It used to be a tobacco shop, but you can use the entire building spaciously. It’s easily large enough for around five guests. Everything you might need is provided—amenities, sauna wear, swimsuits, and more. I could feel thoughtful touches throughout that let you enjoy the charm of an old house without sacrificing convenience. Among all the renovated traditional Accommodations I’ve stayed in, this one gave me the highest level of satisfaction. I’m truly glad we reserved the dinner course! It was about 150 meters from the Accommodation, and I was surprised (in a great way) that someone was waiting at the entrance to guide us. (Thank you very much.) The course reflected a strong commitment to local production for local consumption, and we enjoyed fresh local seafood and meat. The restaurant itself was also a renovated traditional house with a wonderful atmosphere. Because it’s a renovation of an old home, security and how tightly doors seal can feel somewhat unreliable; however, I understood this from the start and there were no negative surprises. I think it’s best to go with an appreciation of the theme “stay as if you live there.” Below are points that require extra attention compared with modern Hotels. - The entrance is separated from the road by only one thin front door; once you open it, there is an earthen-floor entry area that leads directly into the main living space. I didn’t confirm it specifically, but at night it felt like silhouettes inside might be visible from outside (that’s how close it feels to outdoors). The front door lock is an old-style simple type. I would worry about leaving valuables behind for long periods. Since the bedroom also faces the road, passing cars bring in quite a bit of noise and light. (If possible, I thought even just one piece of fabric like an interior shade/blackout curtain on the inside of the entrance or windows would help.) - The exterior door leading to/from outside on the way to the indoor bath cannot close completely due to its structure (likely for drainage), leaving a gap of several centimeters at the bottom. At night, insects attracted by light can enter through it. However, since the door connecting between the indoor bath area and entryway could be closed fully, insects did not come into main areas. (Even though it was summer, there were very few insects overall—so I suspect they do thorough pest control.) To repeat: this Accommodation is more than enough for enjoying both classic traditional-house charm and cold plunge & sauna time. The staff were also excellent. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.

This was the most satisfying Accommodation I’ve ever stayed at!

We stayed here for an anniversary trip as a couple. Since we both love saunas, we chose this Accommodation. In a word: “The most satisfying Accommodation we’ve ever stayed at”! From check-in to meals to check-out, all the staff were consistently courteous and attentive, and we felt comfortable from start to finish. What surprised us first when we entered the Room was how well stocked everything was—amenities and even complimentary items in the refrigerator. It was the first time we’d experienced such generous hospitality, and both of us kept saying, “Wow!” the whole time. The sauna we’d been looking forward to exceeded our expectations. During self löyly, a gentle roasted green tea aroma filled the space and was incredibly relaxing. The outdoor cooling area was also very comfortable, and we were able to unwind so much that we lost track of time. If you love saunas, I highly recommend trying it at least once. Both the Italian course dinner and the Japanese breakfast were truly excellent—we were completely satisfied. Not only were they beautifully presented, but every dish was delicious, with just the right portions so we could enjoy everything through to the end. It was our first time having a course meal so I felt a little nervous at first, but that made it an even more special memory. The overall atmosphere of the Accommodation was wonderful as well—enjoying the sauna, reading together, having unhurried conversations… Because there’s no clock or TV here, we could forget our usual busy routine and spend truly luxurious time together. The Room was spacious too—calm and very relaxing. If I had to mention one thing: since we stayed in summer, the open-air bath used as a cold plunge felt slightly lukewarm. I think it’s seasonal though—next time I’d like to visit in autumn or winter and enjoy an even more refreshing sauna experience. This is an Accommodation I genuinely recommend for anyone who wants to spend quiet time indoors or refresh while forgetting everyday busyness. Our anniversary became an unforgettable memory. We would absolutely love to stay again—thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality.

    Meals are...

We stayed with our dog. The Facility and service were satisfactory, but dinner was only available as a barbecue option; if possible, we would have preferred to enjoy a relaxed meal at the restaurant. Breakfast was excellent in terms of atmosphere, hospitality, and taste!

    The Luxury of Doing Nothing

We stayed here to celebrate my sauna-loving husband’s birthday. Kushimoto is also a special place for us, and we were happy to be able to visit again. The sauna, which was our main purpose, was incredibly refreshing. In particular, the outdoor relaxation area was quiet and truly calming. Our Room had no TV or clock, so it felt like we could slow down and spend time without worrying about the hour for the first time in a while. Dinner and breakfast were also excellent—we enjoyed delicious locally sourced fish and meat. The clay pot rice at breakfast was glossy and beautiful, and it really impressed us. My husband was very satisfied as well, and I’m glad we chose this place. Thank you very much.

I was reminded of the luxury of doing nothing.

I stayed here with a friend. From the courteous explanation at reception to the welcome drink, the choice of three types of loungewear, and the complimentary ice cream and juices in the in-Room refrigerator, we were delighted by the excellent service. We stayed in Inamura-tei, and the Room had a wonderful woody scent and was impeccably clean. I also appreciated that the two beds had different sheet materials, so I could choose the one I preferred. With no TV or clock, it was easy to lose track of time, and simply gazing at the garden felt incredibly comfortable. It helped me truly relax away from my busy daily life. Our Room was attached to a restaurant; we could hear some lively voices around dinner time, but it wasn’t bothersome. The sauna we were looking forward to was clean and nicely hot, and we loved everything including the cold plunge bath and bath! Sauna hats and ponchos are also provided, so you can enjoy a full sauna session even without bringing anything. Checkout is set relatively late at 11:00, so we were able to use the sauna again in the morning—an extremely satisfying stay overall. The surrounding area was very quiet, like an old residential neighborhood, but with a short walk you can reach the coast. It’s also a lovely town for strolling. I would love to visit again if I have another opportunity. Next time I’ll also dine at the restaurant. Thank you very much.

    I stayed at Inamura ...

I stayed at Inamura Residence, a private rental villa, to celebrate my partner’s birthday. Overall, it was the best Accommodation! It rained that day, but the open-air bath and relaxation area are covered, so we could enjoy them without worrying about the weather. We didn’t have enough time and honestly wanted to stay one more night. I was a little worried there might be lots of insects in early summer, but it wasn’t an issue. (They also provided several types of insect-repellent items.) The dinner course with paired drinks and the breakfast were both excellent—we were completely satisfied! They also helped with a birthday plate and storing the cake, which made my partner very happy, so I’m truly grateful.

    Traditional Japanese House Accommodation

Although the Room is in a traditional old house, it has been tastefully updated with modern touches, making it a wonderful Accommodation that offers the best of both worlds. All of the meals were delicious, but I hope the menu for a Multiple Night Stay will vary more in the future. Also, since there is a nearby port where fresh fish can be caught, it would be even better if more local fish were included.

It was a charming traditional house, but it was so cold that I woke up!

It was an Accommodation in a standalone house renovated from a traditional old home. The atmosphere was very nice, but because the windows are single-pane and not well sealed, the cold air outside directly lowers the indoor temperature. We went to bed with the air conditioner and Dyson heater running, but perhaps because there was only one thin futon, I woke up in the middle of the night. It didn’t feel like a comfortable Room. I felt that a Room with proper insulation and sealing would be better.

    Family Trip

I stayed here with my mother, our dog, and my son’s family. There was plenty of space for everyone to relax at their own pace, and it was great to be able to soak in the bath. We had a BBQ for dinner. It was a bit disappointing that the gas stove’s heat was weak and it took a long time to cook. Other than that, the yard was spacious and our dog enjoyed exploring it. My mother and my son’s family were also very satisfied, which made me happy.

    Live together.

This time, we stayed in a traditional Japanese house. We picked up the key and samue loungewear at reception, then headed to our Room. Although it’s an old house, it felt very clean and didn’t seem worn out. That said, the fit of the doors and windows really conveyed its history. We chose this Room because we wanted to relax by the wood-burning stove. The flickering flames were truly soothing. There was also a Goemon-style bath, but the neighboring houses felt surprisingly close. Bathing wear was provided, but we didn’t use it. Dinner was at a restaurant a short distance away. On the way there, seeing both local residents and travelers made us feel like we were staying as if living here—like we, too, had become part of Kushimoto for a while. The meal was delicious, especially the Kushimoto tuna dishes. That night, however, a spring storm rolled in. We could hear the wind and rain and even see flashes of lightning through the window. Staying there let us feel firsthand how tough life can be along the coast—and it also made us think about how challenging typhoon season must be in summer. We’ll be back.

It was the best trip ever.

I chose this Accommodation because I love staying in renovated traditional Japanese houses. I stayed at Masuno Residence with a sauna. Since it’s in Kushimoto, access from the city isn’t great, but it was so wonderful that it more than made up for the trip! The Room was incredibly spacious and spotless, and the heating was already on when we arrived, so it was very comfortable. They provided swimsuits and ponchos for the sauna, a relaxation area, and a large sauna where you can do self löyly. My husband, who loves saunas, was thrilled and said, “The person who designed this really knows saunas!” You can access the indoor bath directly from the sauna and cold plunge pool, and there are roller screens as well, so it felt like a place you could enjoy even with friends or with someone of the opposite sex. We were also impressed that drinks and Häagen-Dazs were provided. The meal was luxurious from the appetizers onward—featuring Kushimoto tuna—and all of the staff were polite and full of hospitality, so we had a wonderful time. Checkout was at 11:00, which meant we could enjoy a late breakfast and then relax in the sauna and baths right up until the last minute. I’ve never written a Hotel Review before, but we truly had such a great time that I wanted to share. We’ll be back!

    The Room was spaciou...

The Room was spacious and the Facility amenities were well equipped—wonderful! The history of each building and the origins of their names were also fascinating, and it made us feel that living in a traditional Japanese house would be lovely. Being able to enjoy both the bath and the sauna is another great highlight.

    It was wonderful.

Because we had a wonderful stay at another NIPPONIA location before, we chose to stay at this Hotel as well. This one was also lovely—a renovated traditional house with a great atmosphere and a nostalgic feel. However, since it is an old standalone house, the heating didn’t work well outside the bedroom and it was cold. The jacuzzi was very spacious and exciting, but the washing area was cold. The MARKS&WEB amenities were excellent—I liked them so much that I bought some after returning home. Meals are served at a traditional-house restaurant a short distance away, and every dish made with local ingredients was delicious; the presentation and tableware were also wonderful. All of the staff and the chef were very pleasant. Thank you very much. We enjoyed an extraordinary experience and had a great time. If we have another chance, we would like to stay in a different type of Room as well.

A traditional Japanese-style Hotel where you can feel like living in the old town of Kushimoto.

This was my second stay, and staying in a different Room this time felt refreshing and enjoyable. The Room had a garden, which made the kids very happy. The meals were excellent! The wine pairing included champagne, and at that price, I think it's worth it—highly recommended. One concern would be insects and the Room temperature (it might feel hot in summer and cold in winter). However, considering the concept of this traditional Japanese-style Hotel, it seems understandable. Overall, I was very satisfied and would love to stay again.

Stay as if you're living in a traditional Japanese farmhouse!

The accommodation "NOIE," a renovated traditional Japanese house, caught my eye while searching for a place to stay during my trip to Katsuura and Kushimoto in Wakayama Prefecture. This was my first time staying at an accommodation that had been renovated from an old Japanese house. The charm of the traditional architecture was preserved while creating a wonderfully modern and comfortable space. I loved the intentional choice of not having a TV or clock—it truly allowed me to relax, and time seemed to fly by effortlessly. For meals, I dined at "Minamo." The dinner course started with several appetizers featuring Kushimoto tuna, which were so delicious they could have been satisfying on their own. However, the subsequent dishes and even the dessert were equally delightful, making it an experience worth 120% satisfaction! The flavors were exceptional, and the presentation on each plate showcased great attention to detail. Breakfast at "Minamo" was also outstanding—a clay pot rice served with side dishes perfectly paired with rice made for one of the best breakfasts I've ever had as a Japanese person. It was so good that I ended up eating three bowls of rice! As a result, I couldn't eat lunch later—though that's entirely on me for overindulging... That said, there are two minor points I'd like to mention: First is that adjusting the shower lever in the bathroom was slightly tricky when trying to control water temperature; second is dealing with insects. While I'm fine with bugs myself, my wife and daughter struggled as they aren't fond of them. However, insect repellent spray is provided onsite for convenience. Be cautious when walking through corridors or opening doors at night since insects (some emitting odors when threatened) may be attracted by lights—just take care not to let them inside your room. Even considering these two points, this accommodation left us highly satisfied overall! If you're looking for somewhere unique and relaxing during your travels here—I highly recommend giving it a try!

    Cherishing the Old

The room was very clean, and I felt safe staying for one night. The shampoo and conditioner were excellent, so much so that I wanted to buy the same ones. I was looking forward to the welcome drink, but unfortunately, it wasn’t available, which left me a bit disappointed. Since the café was open during morning check-out hours, it would have been nice to receive it then. Additionally, as I stayed with my child and paid for their fee as well, it would have been great if drinks were provided for children too. Another Hotel we stayed at offered this service, so I couldn’t help but notice the difference.

This was my second stay, and just like the first time, I was very satisfied! Wonderful Accommodation

The room I stayed in recently was absolutely wonderful. The over 100-year-old building has been carefully renovated, allowing me to enjoy its history while staying comfortably. Although I was initially concerned about noise or insects due to the age of the building, everything was impeccably clean, and I had a very pleasant stay. The room featured a Goemon bath, adding a playful touch. It was an experience you don’t often get to try, making my trip even more memorable. The free drinks and amenities were well-prepared, allowing me to indulge in the luxury of "doing nothing" between check-in and dinner. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, with each dish thoughtfully prepared. The drink prices at the restaurant were reasonable as well, letting me enjoy alcohol without worry. Personally, I think having à la carte options or ingredient upgrades for the course meals would enhance the experience further. However, it was slightly disappointing that there wasn’t any soup served with dinner. Breakfast offered a variety of side dishes that were all tasty—especially the freshly cooked rice from a traditional pot—it was exceptional! It would be even better if higher-quality rice could be used. The staff maintained just the right level of interaction for comfort throughout my stay. Since this is a small accommodation facility, hearing more local stories would have been nice; however, I was deeply moved when even kitchen staff came out to see us off at departure. While I'm slightly curious about how insects might be during summer months here, this accommodation excels in food quality, service standards, and value for money overall. It’s such an outstanding place that I'd visit Kushimoto Town again just to stay here! With its innovative concept as a hotel—though it may be hard for first-time visitors to imagine—it’s truly remarkable. If you're planning a trip to Japan's southernmost point on Honshu Island someday, this is definitely an accommodation you can trust and look forward to staying at!

A wonderful space that stimulates all five senses

We recently stayed at "Sonobe-tei 202" as a family of six from overseas. The accommodation, with its historical charm, truly allowed us to "stay as if living," just as the concept suggests. After walking the Kumano Kodo trail, we arrived by rental car and found the reception easy to locate, allowing for a smooth check-in process. The meal at "Inamuratei" was absolutely fantastic—we had a delicious and enjoyable time! Communication via email before our stay was very courteous, and we deeply appreciated the attentive care during our visit. We would love to return in a different season!

    Enjoy your journey

It was a great trip for summer memories! However, when reserving, several plans were available, but the cost differences were unclear. Next time, I'll try the discount plan. There are Campaign Discount Plan, Regular Plan, and Drink-Included Plan. I thought the Campaign Plan had different meal content and chose the Regular Plan for this special trip. I assumed it was about meal quality, but I now think it's likely the same as the Campaign Discount Plan. Considering the significant price difference, I should have chosen the Campaign Plan instead. If offering a Campaign Plan, please remove options to select a Regular Plan unnecessarily. Other than that, I enjoyed the unique atmosphere and delicious food!

The room was so quiet that it didn’t feel like being in the middle of the city, offering a perfect private space to relax. Just staying in the room was healing—it felt that way. The meals were carefully prepared one by one and were delicious. The amenities were excellent, and their fragrance was soothing! The bath was quite spacious but very comfortable. Stayed in a room with a sauna. The amenities exceeded what was listed on the website, including tumblers, sauna ponchos, coffee, drinks, alcohol, and more. There were also swimsuits for the sauna available; however, since there were no options for women, I recommend bringing your own. The room was even better than I imagined and very comfortable.
