    Rice is...

    This was our first stay as a family of three. The sound system (amp and speakers) was excellent, and everything else—peacefulness, views, the Room, the Onsen, and the hospitality—was outstanding. It was truly a healing Accommodation, and I can recommend it. The meals used local ingredients, but the dishes themselves were gratin, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), and steak, with home-style seasoning. Some guests at this price point may be food lovers who might find it a bit underwhelming; for us, however, it was easy to enjoy and we liked it very much. The only real disappointment was the rice. The white rice was the second worst I’ve ever had in my life. Breakfast rice in particular was quite bad—so dry and hard that it felt like rice cooked the night before had been served as-is. Both my daughter and I love white rice; she always gets seconds at home or at a Ryokan, but this time she didn’t want any more. Our whole family felt the same—it was on par with the worst white rice we’ve ever had (at Hakone Yumi-an). If I had been traveling alone, I would have asked to speak with the chef to confirm whether this texture was actually intended. I don’t usually leave comments, but everything except the rice was so wonderful that I wanted to mention it. I hope this happened by mistake just once, because we would like to visit again next time.

    We enjoyed the Onsen while taking in the lakeside views, and both the meals and the staff were excellent. We’ve made even more wonderful memories at this Accommodation.

    An amazing Room you won’t want to sleep in

    On my first solo trip around Shikoku, I stayed one night in Kochi and decided to splurge here. It’s far from central Kochi City and not the most convenient location, so I thought it would be a one-time treat—but it was so amazing that I promised myself I’d come back every year. The bath attached to the Room had a lot of insects, so I didn’t use it, which felt like a shame. Still, all I wanted was to finish dinner and bathing quickly and get back to the Room to lose myself in the music… Since each Room has different acoustics, I’d love to stay in other Rooms as well. The Room itself was great, but they said the sofa is the best spot for sound—so I spent almost all my time there and ended up a bit sleep-deprived… Rather than coming as a couple or with friends, this place feels perfect for solo travelers who want to have the music all to themselves. I ate quickly because I couldn’t wait to get back to the Room, but the meal was delicious and featured lots of local ingredients.

    We were truly satisfied with our stay.

    Everything—the cuisine, the Room, the Onsen, the garden, and the music—was wonderful, but above all, the hospitality of the president, the proprietress, and all staff was exceptional. We truly felt their attentive care in every detail. This time we stayed for two nights, spending one night each in the Western and Paragon Rooms. The open-air bath while enjoying the view from our Room and the sound of the vintage audio system were both superb, making it a stay that truly let us forget everyday life. We’re not sure when it will be, but we would love to try staying in the remaining two Rooms as well.

    Perfect for solo travelers.

    Recommended for guests who want to enjoy both nature and music. The private bath offers great views and lets you relax in your own world. I was satisfied singing loudly. The shop has an excellent selection, and everything I bought was great. I regret not buying more. The drinks in the Room were also high quality, and everything was delicious.

    Everything was wonderful.

    It was our first stay in two years. I was surprised at how much the garden has been upgraded. Seeing little freshwater crabs was so soothing. The Room was as wonderful as ever, and the view from the Room was still breathtaking. The meals were truly excellent, and we were completely satisfied with our one-night stay. If you come to Kochi, of course—but I also think it’s worth coming to Kochi just to stay at this Accommodation. We will definitely stay again.

    I’m glad I went.

    Time seemed to slow down, and we had an amazing stay. Every meal was delicious, and we truly enjoyed our time here. Listening to music while taking in the beautiful views was especially memorable, and at night fireflies appeared by the window. The scenery was outstanding.

    We had a great time.

    We stayed here on a trip to visit my husband’s hometown, Kochi Prefecture, for the first time in 50 years. It was a calm, well-maintained Facility. The meals were especially good—light and not ordinary—and we, in our 70s, truly enjoyed them. The lakeside view was very soothing. My husband is quite picky, so it was rare for him to say on the drive home that everything suited his taste and was delicious. (Laugh) The staff were kind and thoughtful, and we were very satisfied. Thank you very much.

    This one-of-a-kind F...

    This one-of-a-kind Facility exceeded our expectations: in a private space, we could take in the tranquil scenery while surrendering to the superb acoustics. Under the management of the owner’s wife, a certified vegetable sommelier, the meals showcasing local ingredients were outstanding. As it was our wedding anniversary, we were also deeply moved by the president’s carefully curated video and music experience. We had been saying this was “Done” for a repeat visit and that we’d come every year—when a fishing boat came into the river right in front of our Room. At one point it lingered directly in front of us as if peering inside, even after making eye contact, which was shocking. Fortunately, we were already preparing to check out; but if we had been in the open-air bath or changing clothes, it would have been very unsettling. For that reason, although I wanted to give a perfect 5/5, I deducted one point. This is not the Accommodation’s fault—the Facility itself deserves 120/100—but since the river in front is public and boats may approach close to shore, I think guests should be given a brief heads-up.

    A Hidden Retreat with Beautiful Moss

    The moment I stepped into the entrance of the Ryokan, I was impressed by how beautiful the moss and landscaping were. I personally love plants—especially moss—and even at high-end Ryokan, I often feel disappointed because many places don’t pay attention to the finer details of their landscaping. However, Kohanyu was truly wonderful. When I travel, I try not to watch TV, but Kohanyu doesn’t have a TV to begin with, so I could relax and fully enjoy the Room, the view, and the Onsen. One night didn’t feel like enough. The food was delicious as well, so I’d love to come again. The only thing that concerned me was that in the morning I had to refill the bath water myself—I would have preferred 24-hour continuous flow.

    I’d been curious about this place for a while and finally stayed here. It wasn’t bad, but I felt it was lacking in many ways… First, I was really impressed by the attention to music! However, there was no portable Bluetooth speaker and no TV, which made things inconvenient. The bath was smaller than I expected, and rather than feeling like a carefully selected free-flowing hot spring, it felt more like using a bath at home. In the morning and evening it didn’t bother me, but at night it was far too dark with no lighting at all. With what seemed like a lake or pond right in front of me, it felt like something might appear and I was scared, so I couldn’t relax in the bath… Dinner was very delicious, but breakfast felt quite minimal—more like pre-made items. I would have liked at least freshly grilled fish… The miso soup also seemed to have freeze-dried ingredients. Since dinner was so elaborate, the contrast made it a bit disappointing.

    Property where you can enjoy music

    The quality of the acoustics was high, and the owner's attention to detail could be felt throughout the space. The warmth of the wood maintained an exquisite warmth in the Room. The view was wonderful, providing a sense of openness and comfort, and the food was delicious. However, one downside was that when using the open-air bath in the morning, there was a staff entrance clearly visible from it. Two staff members came in and out twice while I was there, which made it difficult to relax.

    A must-visit Property for audio enthusiasts

    As someone who enjoys visiting Properties with classic audio equipment, this is a Property I simply couldn't miss. This time, I stayed at Artec. I thoroughly enjoyed the vintage amplifier and A7 speaker system. Soaking in the open-air bath in the Room while listening to music from the audio system and gazing at the river flow from the balcony—absolute bliss. With only four guest Rooms available, I also enjoyed the private open-air bath in a different way. I wish I could have spent more time enjoying the incredible audio setup in the restaurant. Chatting with the owner about audio and discussing future plans—there's no choice but to visit again! Next time, I’d love to stay in a different Room.

    A one-of-a-kind space

    A limited retreat in Tosa for only three groups per day. Not only can you experience a unique vintage audio setup in a lake-view room with an open-air bath, but the materials that make up the space, the angle of the ceiling, and the arrangement of the walls have been designed to consider sound reflection and absorption. The speakers integrated with the furniture and the Western Electric 300B vacuum tubes allowed the host to enjoy jazz. I thoroughly enjoyed the cuisine and the bath. The staff were all very approachable, and I had various conversations with them. I heard that the place is also wonderful during the firefly season, so I would love to visit during that time.

    On the lakeside after the rain

    In the clear weather that seemed to make the heavy rain of the previous day a lie, I was gladly allowed to bring my guitar and had a session with JH.JB of heaven at a loud volume. The sounds of each instrument were clearly audible, and there were many delightful discoveries. It was a wonderful Stays where I could spend a healing time in the open-air bath of the guest room under the starry sky, enjoying the night breeze.
