    Wonderful hospitality.

    While we were waiting for the Shuttle Service to the station after check-out, they kindly offered us cold drinks and showed great consideration in many ways. The meals were delicious, and the tableware was stylish—both the taste and presentation were very satisfying.

    This is an Accommodation you’ll want to stay at again.

    The hospitality was exceptionally attentive, and we enjoyed the baths (including the private bath) many times. Both dinner and breakfast were highly satisfying: creative dishes that were never gimmicky, making the most of quality ingredients with beautifully balanced dashi. After taking a local train from Ueda Station, we were picked up at the station, and the location also allowed us to walk to nearby lush green sites such as a Kannon hall and temples. The proprietress and all staff were wonderfully service-minded, making our trip truly comfortable and enjoyable. Thank you very much.

    It was just as described in the Review!

    We stayed in Room 401 with an open-air bath. The deep, expansive views, delicious food, and Onsen were all wonderful, but above all, we were most impressed by the warmth and kindness of the staff. Even among Accommodations in the same price range, many do not see guests off, so we truly appreciated it. It made us want to come back even more. Thank you very much.

    This Accommodation is very relaxing.

    We visited for the Kurumayama Kogen lift, and it was our first time in Bessho Onsen. All the staff were incredibly warm, and the food was simply outstanding! Starting with an elaborate hassun platter, the sashimi was sourced from across The whole country and exceptionally fresh. From dishes featuring combinations we’d never tried before, to dobin-mushi and pasta-style Goto udon, everything was delicious. Even the desserts paired ingredients in a refreshingly creative way—surprising yet perfectly balanced. We were completely satisfied and absolutely full. We were soothed by the Onsen and comforted by the meals—it made for a truly wonderful trip. This Accommodation has become one of our favorites. Highly recommended for anyone looking to relax and unwind.

    A Tranquil Onsen Town

    I chose Bessho Onsen simply because it was convenient after sightseeing at Zenkoji Temple and as a stopover before visiting Kamikochi the next day. I hadn’t thought of it as a particularly famous Onsen area, but I was surprised by how scenic it is, with rare thatched-roof temples and historic buildings within walking distance. There aren’t the typical “photo spot” attractions you often find in well-known Onsen towns, but I really loved the nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere that still preserves the true charm of an Onsen destination. Above all, the hospitality at Nanakusa no Yu was outstanding, and the cuisine was delicious and beautifully presented. One small disappointment was that I had seen a photo on IKYU showing an in-room bath, but our Room only had a shower booth. Also, there was no shower chair in the shower booth, so standing the whole time was a bit tough. In the end, only I went to the large public bath early in the morning. The large public bath had bath towels only, while our Room had regular towels only; I felt it would be helpful if both bath towels and regular towels were provided in each place. That said, the Onsen water itself had a wonderfully soft quality and was excellent. At many Accommodations these days there are often many foreign staff members and communication can sometimes be difficult; here, however—at least among those who assisted me—all staff were Japanese (including some older staff), so everything could be communicated smoothly without any extra concern, which felt rare lately. The older woman who served our meals also spoke in such a warm way and showed such kind attentiveness that it made an already delicious meal feel even more enjoyable. It was a very fulfilling stay.     Thank you for your hospitality.

    Thank you to the proprietress and staff for their heartfelt hospitality. My father, who is hard of hearing at the age of 88, was deeply moved and grateful that they kindly explained each dish close to his ear and chatted with him; thanks to them, I was able to show him proper filial devotion. The in-Room dining featured a wide variety of carefully prepared, delicious kaiseki dishes. Each plate was a satisfying yet manageable portion, and we finished everything. The bed was very comfortable as well. The top-floor open-air Onsen offered wonderful views overlooking Ueda City. The octagonal three-story pagoda at Anraku-ji Temple behind the Accommodation is well worth seeing—climb the steps through the majestic cedar grove for an unforgettable sight. Bessho-Onsen Station also has a stylish retro station building. This is a hidden-gem Onsen area rich in sightseeing spots with surprises that far exceeded our expectations. To finish, we also enjoyed Ki-hachi’s famous mame-daifuku and dorayaki—sweet and delicious—even though it’s a bit away from the Accommodation.

    Excellent hot spring water quality

    Although my previous stay was at a different Accommodation, Bessho Onsen truly has exceptional water quality. It’s rare to find a place where you can even drink the spring water, so I feel it’s something special. Nanakusa no Yu was filled with genuine hospitality. I’ve visited many places, and the variety of sweets served with the tea in the Room was the best I’ve ever had. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and I also enjoyed their original dishes such as udon pasta. Since we stayed in a Room with an open-air bath, we were able to enjoy bathing again and again while looking out over the townscape. The bath in our Room was so good that we only used the public bath once. There are only two Rooms with an open-air bath, so making a Reservation for a weekend may be a bit challenging, but I’d love to return in another season—ideally when matsutake mushrooms are at their best. Thank you very much for taking such great care of us.

    The food is absolutely delicious.

    This was my second stay because I loved the meals and the baths. This time, I mistakenly forgot my basic skincare items and was in trouble. I was told they were available in the large public bath, but they were an all-in-one type that didn’t suit me. Since having them is standard these days, some guests may find this inconvenient. I would appreciate it if you could provide them, even for a fee.

    Shoes are collected ...

    Shoes are collected at the entrance. The entire property is spotless everywhere. In the dining area, having footwear feels reassuring. I would have appreciated being told that after breakfast, drinks could be enjoyed in the lobby. Not only the staff but also the other guests were wonderful people.

    A quiet, relaxing accommodation

    Because it is not a place visited by large crowds, you can enjoy a quiet, unhurried stay. There are temples nearby the Accommodation, making for a meaningful walk. Viewing the National Treasure three-story pagoda requires an admission fee, but it is definitely worth visiting. There are also shops in the area—especially those serving Shinshu soba—so you can enjoy walks beyond temple visits. Compared with the room rate, the Facility is somewhat compact, but the service is well organized and you can stay comfortably. The Onsen is an alkaline spring with a sulfur scent; the water temperature is good and drinking the spring water is also possible. The meals focus on standard dishes and feel slightly lacking in “Nagano character,” so they may fall short of expectations. Other than that, it does not get crowded, and its hilltop location offers great views over Ueda City and a pleasant setting. With good service and an enjoyable Onsen, this Accommodation is recommended for those who want to spend a quiet, relaxing time.

    The Room, meals, and...

    The Room, meals, and baths were all excellent. The view from the top-floor bath was exceptional—you could even see Kitamuki Kannon, which was very close by. The hospitality and attitude of the staff, including the proprietress, were impressive and showed thorough training. It was also comfortable that slippers were not used even when moving around outside the Room. Great value for money—5/5 in every respect.

    After visiting Zenko...

    After visiting Zenkoji Temple yesterday, I visited Kitamuki Kannon today and stayed at Nanakusa-no-Yu in Bessho Onsen. According to the staff, visiting both Zenkoji Temple and Kitamuki Kannon brings blessings for both the past and the future. This Accommodation may be the closest one to Kitamuki Kannon that you can see from the open-air bath. Sorry for viewing it while unclothed. The Onsen was gentle and left my skin feeling smooth, and the breeze felt wonderful. The food was, of course, delicious—nothing to complain about. I was surprised by the wide selection of sake, and I ended up enjoying quite a bit of my favorites. The cute Arita and Kutani tableware was a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. Very satisfied.

    We were able to relax and had a comfortable stay.

    Bessho Onsen was my first visit as a tourist, but this is a Ryokan I’d like to return to specifically for a stay. The property is clean and comfortable throughout. Both the Onsen and the meals were excellent. The Onsen in particular was pleasantly hot, just the way I like it. The staff’s courteous service was also wonderful. My spouse and I were able to spend a relaxing and comfortable Golden Week here. It’s easy to see why this Ryokan receives such high ratings.

    We stay here every year. The Room and Onsen are always thoroughly cleaned, making this Accommodation feel very fresh and spotless. The flowers in the Room, the flowers in the hallway, and the interior decor all show great taste, and above all, the food is delicious—we were completely satisfied.     Memorable hospitality

    This was my second stay (and especially this time, it was a last-minute booking), and on both occasions we received truly warm hospitality. Last time, it rained on the night of our arrival, and by the next day the rain had stopped—then to our surprise, the staff had washed our car beautifully. This time as well, I left something behind, and I’m very grateful that you kindly mailed it to me afterward. Flowers were thoughtfully displayed throughout the Accommodation, and in the dining area there were handmade menus prepared by the staff—everything felt genuinely heartfelt. It was a stay we will always remember. Thank you very much.

    We stopped by on our way back from visiting Zenkoji Temple. With a connection to Kitamuki Kannon, it’s a charming Onsen town full of atmosphere. Contrary to the image of being far from the sea, we were thoroughly satisfied with a delicious dinner featuring excellent seafood along with local ingredients. We stayed in a twin-bed Room, and it offers the best of both a Ryokan and a Hotel. The staff’s thoughtful care made for a comfortable stay, but what truly surprised us was that they found the insulated bottle I had left in my Room before I even noticed—and drove after us to hand it over at an intermediate station on the Bessho Line! It was incredibly helpful; thank you so much! This time we stayed for one night, but next time we’d like to take our time exploring the Onsen town and visiting temples and shrines.

    First Time at Bessho Onsen

    This was my first visit to Bessho Onsen, which I had been curious about for a long time. The accommodation was clean and decorated with fresh flowers throughout, creating a pleasant atmosphere. The entire facility has tatami flooring, making it comfortable to walk barefoot. From the spacious 12-tatami mat Japanese-style room's large windows, I could enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains and townscape of Shinshu, offering a sense of openness. A state-of-the-art massage chair by the window provided ultimate relaxation after bathing. I appreciated the variety of tea accompaniments available, including not only sweets but also pickles, which made enjoying tea even more delightful. The top-floor public bath features a small sauna where I could sweat it out before soaking in an open and comfortably warm sulfur onsen. While guests need to bring towels from their rooms, bath towels are provided at the facility along with cold water in the post-bath area for refreshment. The meals were exceptional and creatively prepared to suit my taste perfectly. The head chef is from Goto Islands; while primarily Japanese cuisine was served, dishes like pasta with shrimp added an excellent touch of flavor. Seafood-based dishes left a particularly strong impression on me. Additionally, there was an extensive selection of local Shinshu sake to choose from, adding extra enjoyment to dining. Breakfast was well-seasoned and just right in portion size for me—I even finished everything on my plate! Being able to choose between grilled fish or meat (hamburger steak) for breakfast was another highlight. The hospitality provided by the staff greatly enhanced my impression of this accommodation. Their attention to detail—such as keeping windows spotless—and efforts toward minimizing waste reflected their dedication. If I may add one suggestion: since the public bath uses free-flowing hot spring water without circulation or disinfection due to its high quality as an onsen source itself—it would be perfect if this aspect were further emphasized. I hope I'll have another opportunity to visit again someday. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

    It was an accommodation where we couldn't feel the spirit of hospitality.

    Upon arrival, we were informed by the staff that "there are many groups today, so please have your meal in the room." When we requested to dine at the dining area instead, they insisted, saying, "It will be too noisy with all the groups; you won't be able to hear your conversation. Please have your meal in the room," without considering our preference. When we opened the window in our room by sliding back the shoji screen, a large number of ladybugs and stink bugs appeared. We immediately called for assistance from a staff member who removed them but explained that "when it's warm, they come through gaps in the windows. Even if we remove them now, they'll come back." Feeling uneasy and asking if anything could be done about it, we were told that "all other rooms are fully booked; you'll need to change accommodations," which was quite shocking. When we asked for measures to prevent bugs from entering again, they said they'd call for the manager. However, even she stated similarly that "it's inevitable for bugs to appear." As a temporary solution, tape was applied around windows and screens but with an attitude suggesting it couldn't be helped—this left us feeling very hurt. We also expressed not wanting to eat meals in a bug-filled room and were eventually moved to dine at their dining area. Contrary to what had been mentioned earlier by staff about noise levels making conversations difficult there—it turned out quiet enough where conversations could easily take place—raising doubts over prior explanations given. Hoping perhaps views might redeem things while using private bath facilities attached within-room—the proximity between neighboring residential areas meant visibility issues arose when opening up windows during use undermining privacy concerns despite natural hot spring features being available here (unfortunately). Additionally drying oneself afterward revealed unpleasant damp-smelling towels adding further disappointment overall experience-wise altogether! For those uncomfortable dealing w/ insects or seeking scenic enjoyment alongside bathing moments alike likely better suited exploring alternative accommodation options elsewhere instead!

    Highly satisfied.

    We stayed here for our 10th wedding anniversary. Since we had informed the staff about our special day, we were touched by the surprise cards and gifts they prepared for us. It turned out to be a truly memorable and wonderful trip. The meals were delicious, and the detailed explanations about each dish made them even more enjoyable. We were especially amazed by how delicious the wasabi was! We look forward to visiting again!

    The atmosphere at Be...

    The atmosphere at Bessho Onsen was livelier than usual this time of year, coinciding with the North-Facing Kannon Opening Ceremony. During check-in, while enjoying tea, we were advised, "It's a bit warm now, but if you're going to the ceremony, it might get cold while waiting in line. Please dress warmly." Thanks to this advice, we were able to enjoy the visit without feeling chilly as temperatures gradually dropped. At dinner, F-san once again took care of serving us as they did last year. Their advice on how to enjoy each dish was perfectly timed and never felt overbearing. It enhanced our dining experience and made the delicious food even more enjoyable. (Regarding drinks: after ordering alcohol and discussing with my spouse whether it would be better on the rocks or diluted with water, F-san brought out a suggestion saying, "Why not try it like this? If you don't like it that way later on, you can mix it yourself—it'll end up being the same result anyway! But I think this way suits this drink best," offering us separate servings first.) This thoughtful gesture mirrored exactly what we had been discussing moments earlier and left both of us pleasantly surprised. The result? The drink became just as delightful as the meal itself. This level of attentive service truly highlights how exceptional this accommodation is. Last year during our stay here—which happened to coincide with our wedding anniversary—we received a message card and commemorative gift from Okami-san after mentioning our special occasion in passing. This time around (as we've been visiting Shinshu for its autumn foliage for nearly 20 years), although we hadn't mentioned anything about anniversaries beforehand during booking or check-in—once again there awaited another thoughtful card & gift upon arrival! Such gestures added yet another cherished memory for us. Of course—as always—the cleanliness throughout both rooms & facilities remains impeccable; walking barefoot across tatami flooring throughout an entirely slipper-free building feels refreshing despite knowing maintaining such pristine conditions must require significant effort given many guests bring wheeled suitcases nowadays too! We look forward eagerly toward staying here again next time!

    This is my second stay. It was absolutely wonderful!

    The previous experience was wonderful, so I had high expectations, but the service this time exceeded them by far. As someone who enjoys exploring various accommodations, it was my first time staying at the same facility twice. The last visit was so exceptional that I strongly wanted to return this year, and it turned out to be an even better experience thanks to the warm hospitality of the hostess. I was especially touched when the staff member serving us dinner remembered our previous visit—it made me very happy. Even though we chose a "no meals, no bedding" plan, my 2-year-old daughter had an absolutely delightful and enjoyable time. The kids' space is charming and beautifully designed. I am deeply grateful for the thoughtful care of the elegant and gracious hostess. I definitely plan to visit again next year. This is a truly wonderful accommodation; however, if I were to point out any downside at all, it would be being woken up by the nearby temple bell ringing loudly at 6 AM (though my daughter stayed asleep). Of course, this is not in any way the fault of the accommodation itself—but being forced awake at 6 AM can be quite tough (haha). I'll try to think positively about making good use of an early start! Even with that minor inconvenience, it's such a fantastic place that I will undoubtedly return again. Thank you for providing such a lovely experience!

    Overall, the stay was comfortable, but for three people, one person had to use a futon, which felt a bit less cozy compared to the beds. The tissue box provided had very few tissues left and they were difficult to take out. The food and the staff's hospitality were excellent.
