  Hospitality

  This is what a great Accommodation should be. It met my expectations—and exceeded them. From the complimentary herb water made with herbs from the garden to the various cordial syrups and even a sake bath, every detail was thoughtfully considered. The olive kaiseki dinner left a strong impression of Shodoshima. I truly hope to return.

  Ocean-View Accommodation

  This was my first stay, and it was truly a wonderful Accommodation. I’ve stayed at island Accommodations several times before, but this one had a different feel. It was great that the sea was so close, and being able to see the ocean from the Room was especially nice. The olive kaiseki dinner was exquisite. The variety of olives used in each dish was fun and delicious. I also enjoyed relaxing in the private bath, but I did notice that the drainage seemed a bit poor—the shower water didn’t drain easily, which was inconvenient.

  It was exactly as expected, and I had no complaints.

  The meals, Room, and baths were all excellent. For each dish served, the staff kindly explained which olive oil would pair best. I also added the bath sake (for bathing, provided to us) to the in-room bath and enjoyed it. In addition, my wife was very happy with the olive oil we received as a Diamond member benefit. If we have another chance to visit this island, we would like to stay at Island Accommodation Mari next time as well.

  I learned a lot about olive oil.

  I was able to fully enjoy the sound of the waves rolling in. You can enjoy dishes made with olive oil. The staff kindly explains olive oil in detail, which I found very interesting. However, for me as an older guest, having every dish prepared with olive oil was a bit hard on my stomach. Next time I visit, I think I’ll need the courage to ask that some dishes be served without olives. The Room bath has a function to keep the water temperature constant, but I wish I had been told at check-in that this function turns off after a few hours. By the time I bathed the next morning, the water had cooled. There were also small issues—such as an empty hand soap dispenser and a tablet with only about half its battery remaining—so I rated service 4 out of 5. I would like to stay again. Like Shima Accommodation Mari, I look forward to seeing your continued growth.

Regarding your comment, “At my age, using olive oil in every dish was too hard on my stomach,” we are truly sorry that the service staff who assisted you did not notice and failed to show proper consideration. We deeply regret this. Based on your feedback, we have held repeated meetings and have launched a “new Olive Kaiseki service.” For the two dishes where we pour oil directly onto the food, we will always speak with you and confirm your preference in advance. To help guests enjoy their meal with greater peace of mind, we will continue refining how we pair Shodoshima olive oil with Japanese cuisine. Next, regarding “I wanted an explanation at check-in about the bath water temperature/keep-warm function in the Room,” our standard procedure is for the staff member guiding you to explain that “the keep-warm time is 8 hours” when assisting with filling the bath. It appears this was not communicated, and we sincerely apologize. You also pointed out that “the guest Room tablet had only about half its battery remaining.” Due to our iPad battery optimization settings, our guideline is 50%–80% charge. We believe this provides sufficient battery for viewing in-Room information during your stay without concern; however, we appreciate your feedback. Regarding “the hand soap in the guest Room was empty,” this was due to an oversight by our housekeeping staff. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. The department has held repeated meetings and will take greater care going forward. We continually make improvements based on feedback from many guests, and step by step we will keep working—without giving up—to become an Accommodation that satisfies our guests and delivers attentive moments of delight.   Among the many Accommodations in Shikoku, this one offered the best hospitality.

  Extending our trip to Shodoshima was absolutely worth it—this was an Accommodation that truly made us glad we came. Of course, the Room was spacious with no sense of confinement, and it was clean and comfortable. Beyond that, the calm sea stretching out beyond the window felt wonderfully refreshing, and we enjoyed the soothing sound of the waves and seabirds. The private baths (both indoor and outdoor) were relaxing, and after bathing several kinds of drinks are offered as a complimentary service. The olive kaiseki dinner, served over nearly two hours, features carefully prepared seafood from Shodoshima and nearby waters along with meat, vegetables, fruit, and more—beautifully presented on elegant tableware—and each dish can be enjoyed with Shodoshima-produced olive oil. Sitting side by side at sea-facing seats while taking in the view with our meal and wine was outstanding. It was also nice that there was no music or unnecessary noise. The menu is designed to be flipped page by page for each dish—a small touch that adds to the enjoyment. Breakfast also offers a wide variety of items. Once you taste it, you can tell quality ingredients are being used throughout. We joined an evening tour of about an hour to visit Goishiyama (the second sacred site on Shodoshima). On the round-trip microbus ride, we were given explanations about Shodoshima’s industries and history, which deepened our understanding of the island. The night view from Goishiyama left a strong impression. With warm hospitality and pleasant service—and an experience that lets you fully enjoy Shodoshima—this is an Accommodation we came to love.

  A Luxurious Accommodation on Shodoshima Island

  I stayed for one night in April 2026. This Accommodation was highly satisfying, with a private Onsen and both dinner and breakfast prepared right in front of us so we could watch the cooking process.

  When visiting Shodoshima, you’ll want to stay here.

  The spacious Room with a great view was wonderful, and both the in-room bath and the private bath were excellent! The meals were also delicious, so I’d love to stay again when I visit Shodoshima.

  Wonderful every time you visit.

  I’m always impressed by the meals and the beautiful presentation. After enjoying the private bath in the morning, I saw a staff member wiping guests’ car windows and was even more moved by such thoughtful care. The tableware is wonderful as well. Thank you for these memorable experiences. I’ve also collected quite a lot of sea glass from the beach.

  I was able to relax in a clean Facility and a quiet seaside setting.

  Overall, the Accommodation was wonderful in terms of the Facility, meals, and surroundings, but considering the high price, I felt the service lacked a bit of hospitality. The dinner was very delicious, but drizzling olive oil over every dish felt a little excessive, and toward the end I felt too heavy to keep eating. Since you use such great ingredients, I also felt there should be dishes that let guests enjoy the natural flavors of the ingredients. Perhaps for that reason, breakfast—which was not bound by olive oil—was excellent in both ingredients and seasoning, and truly delicious.

  A Unique and Memorable Experience

  I had been wanting to visit, and when I came last spring I was very satisfied, so I returned again hoping to come back in autumn as well. I especially enjoyed the "Olive Kaiseki" once again this time. This time, you also invited me to join the late-afternoon tour of the Goishiyama Sacred Site, and I participated. Although you are clearly accustomed to Shodoshima’s narrow roads and the steep route up to the sacred site, you kindly guided us there. It is a place that is not easy to visit in everyday life, and I was deeply moved by the beauty of the sunset seen from there and by the rugged mountain scenery along the way toward the sheer cliffs. I am truly happy that you took me to a place that would be difficult to reach on my own and that I was able to have such a valuable experience.

  Olive Kaiseki Dinner

  The Olive Kaiseki dinner was delicious. We were able to taste more than five types of olive oil, each paired with a different dish. I was impressed by how olive oil can transform Japanese cuisine into something entirely new, since I had only used it for Spanish dishes and the like before.\nThe Ryokan is located on a narrow peninsula, and we enjoyed the calm Seto Inland Sea and beautiful views.\nThere was also an evening program to visit the sacred sites of Goishiyama, and being taken there was a memorable experience.\nThank you to all the staff.

Regarding international guests, 2025 was a year with an especially high number of overseas visitors due to the Setouchi Triennale, held once every three years. In a typical year, international guests account for about 10%, but in 2025 this rose to 25%—approximately 2.5 times higher than usual. While we do welcome international guests on many occasions, we would be delighted if you were able to relax and enjoy a comfortable stay at your own pace.   The food, tranquility, and views are wonderful!

  Thank you very much for your hospitality; it was a truly comfortable stay. We had requested a lighter meal, but we were impressed by the wonderful presentation and the deliciousness of each dish, and ended up eating more than we expected. We sincerely appreciate your thoughtful care. Due to the rain, the night tour we had been looking forward to was unfortunately canceled, but we were able to relax in our Room instead. Overall, we were very satisfied; however, we were a little disappointed that the Onsen was not natural, that it took time to fill the indoor bath with hot water, and that drinks in the refrigerator were not complimentary. Also, given the beautiful location, we feel it would be even more appealing if guests could swim at the beach right in front of the Accommodation. We hope this Accommodation will become even more wonderful in the future.

However, the water in the in-room scenic-view bath is not certified as an Onsen. We sincerely apologize that our explanation was unclear. Going forward, we are also consulting with our equipment contractors to enable the use of a new groundwater source. 2) About our Accommodation tours Regarding the Accommodation’s original activities, we are planning new workshops from around summer 2026. We will also combine them with our existing “Sunset & Goishiyama Tour” and “Prayer & Night View Tour” to create even more appealing programs. 3) Time required to fill the in-room bath For the detached rooms “Sano-ne” and “Tono-ne,” the bathtub is particularly large (600 L), so it takes approximately 30 minutes to fill. Once filled, however, it retains heat for up to 8 hours. We will continue considering improvements, including ways to reduce filling time. 4) Drinks in the refrigerator In addition to paid items from Shodoshima and Kagawa Prefecture, we also provide complimentary options such as lemongrass herbal water, bottled water, our original drip-bag coffee, and various teas. In addition, in the changing area of the Private Onsen, we have a complimentary refrigerator stocked with soft drinks and beer for guests to enjoy after bathing.   Enjoy the ocean view, relax to the sound of waves, and indulge in exquisite meals!

  A room on the second floor with a sea view, where chilled olive tea was provided in the refrigerator. I spent a relaxing time lying on the balcony chair, gazing at the ocean. The meals were exquisite in both appearance and taste, enjoyed with various types of olive oil. At night, even with the windows closed, I could hear the sound of waves and had a restful sleep. The staff at this accommodation were kind and attentive to every detail, offering exceptional hospitality. I would love to visit again!

  Hatsushodoshima

  I stayed at this Ryokan during my first trip to Shodoshima. In conclusion, I was completely satisfied with everything! First of all, the view from the Ryokan was truly stunning, offering a serene landscape overlooking the Seto Inland Sea that was incredibly soothing. The room was clean and had a calm Japanese atmosphere, making it very relaxing. The meals featured dishes made with seasonal local ingredients, all prepared with great care and attention to detail. Dinner focused on olives and was delicious; the fresh sashimi in particular was exceptional. Above all, the warm hospitality of the staff made my stay truly comfortable throughout. I am deeply grateful for their thoughtful attentiveness. This is a wonderful Ryokan that I would love to revisit when I return to Shodoshima someday. Thank you so much!

  A truly relaxing accommodation facing a quiet cove

  It was an accommodation where I could truly relax while enjoying the ocean view. This place holds special memories for me. During summer vacations, I would visit, swim in the sea, row a boat out to the open water, and enjoy fireworks on the beach at night. The area in front of my grandfather's house felt like a private beach. It was an ordinary scene during my childhood, but now I realize how wonderful this place truly is. This time, I stayed here with my mother and aunt who grew up in this area. I was delighted that the private bath was an Onsen, and both the room's bath and its view were excellent. Adding sake to the bath made it warm and relaxing. Above all, the food was absolutely delicious! The explanations were thorough, and every staff member provided friendly service. Both the interior design and service were impeccable. However, since there are many stairs, we chose a first-floor room for my elderly mother and aunt to stay in. The beds were traditional Japanese-style beds with steps; regular beds might be safer for elderly guests due to their flat surface. That minor concern aside, it became one of those accommodations I'd love to visit again with great satisfaction!

As for myself, the owner, I have nearly 20 classmates, seniors, and juniors from elementary school who still live in this area. We often visited from the nearby Naeba district as well. "Sea, Mountains, Sky, Stars, Birds, Sun, Moon" This is a beautiful place where you can feel nature just as it is. Regarding your comment about the bed height—our apologies for any inconvenience caused. Indeed there is a step up; having it flat would be safer. However, we designed it slightly elevated so that guests can enjoy views of the sea even from bed upon waking up. We will consult with our architect to explore improvements and adjustments moving forward. Lastly, we will continue striving to provide detailed joy and comfort through ongoing efforts and innovations. Thank you once again!

  Truly amazing!

  It is a very quiet and relaxing property.

  Even though it's right by the sea, it's calm and the sound of the waves is not bothersome. It's truly quiet and relaxing, which is wonderful. The cuisine allowed us to taste various varieties of olive oil, each complementing the dishes well, which made me realize how much flavor can change with different oils. I immediately purchased some that I liked to take home. It's a bit disappointing that the bath in the room is not an Onsen, and after using the private bath, while I appreciated the drink service, there wasn't a place to relax next to the bath area. There were sofas in the lobby, but since it was at the entrance, it didn't feel like a place to relax after bathing; it would be nice if there was a place for those who finish early to wait.

Regarding the sound of the sea you mentioned, it seems to be the soft and gentle sound of waves unique to Setouchi. Additionally, we source olive oil from Shodoshima, obtaining 15-20 varieties from over ten small olive farmers each year. We manage them in a low-temperature refrigerator dedicated to oils throughout the year and offer them according to seasonal ingredients and dishes. Thank you for purchasing it. Now, thank you very much for your comments on "Room Onsen Water" and "Private Onsen Relaxation Area." Firstly, regarding "Room Onsen Water," [Satoe Onsen/Mari Rakuyu] is transported every morning from our main building "Island Property Mari," where it is heated and managed for use. Due to issues with water volume, the room baths do not use onsen water. As for the "Private Onsen Relaxation Area," while searching for a location, there is currently no space that surpasses the view from guest rooms. For now, we hope you can return to your Room and enjoy views of Seto Inland Sea or listen to its gentle sounds from your terrace. Furthermore, starting in June (planned), we are planning a new 'Relaxation Area' utilizing our rooftop. With expansive views from the third floor overlooking starry skies or moments dyed by sunrise or sunset; once preparations are complete we'll provide guidance accordingly. Lastly but not least importantly—we will continue striving towards providing detailed joyfulness tailored specifically towards each guest's needs—thankful always! Umioto Mari

  A Wonderful Holiday in Shodoshima

  The location was simply amazing, with the Seto Inland Sea spreading out before us, allowing us to truly refresh ourselves. The Room was spacious, and both from the indoor sofa and the terrace chairs, we could only see the Seto Inland Sea and the sky. Additionally, the Room was kept impeccably clean, allowing us to stay comfortably. The food was also extremely delicious, and we enjoyed various olive oils as spices. Both dinner and breakfast were truly delightful. The exquisite taste of the smoothie we had in the morning is something I think is hard to find even in Tokyo. It was wonderful. I would want to visit again just for the meals here. The staff were kind and provided courteous service. Thank you for a very satisfying two days. If I may make one request, I think it would be helpful for women if a standing mirror could be placed in the Room.
