    There was no respons...

    There was no responsible staff member on duty, and the operation seemed to be run mostly by part-time workers, with a complete lack of basic hospitality. They may have a manual, but they were unable to handle emergencies at all. Even the “emergency contact” phone number goes to voicemail (no matter how many times you call). Late Sunday night, the neighboring house was moving out, and loud crashing noises continued until around 3:00 a.m. I considered calling the police, but when I called the Hotel’s “emergency contact,” it also went to voicemail—and there was no response the next day either. (The part-time staff member knew there had been a voicemail but ignored it.) I will never stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone.

    A great city deserves a great Hotel, with thoughtful hospitality.

    Because I love Jiyujin’s Hotel concept, after visiting Matsumoto, Oze, and Niigata, this time I extended my trip all the way to Otsu in Shiga Prefecture. Today’s Accommodation is the traditional townhouse “Chaya.” Room 101—through the door while keeping the well at the back of the lounge on your right—is very spacious. It has a bedroom, a living room, and even an engawa veranda. Sitting in the egg chair or swan chair in the living room, you’ll have a lovely garden spread out right in front of you. The indoor bath features a hinoki cypress tub with a view of a small courtyard garden, so you can truly unwind even while bathing. After checking in in advance at “Omiya,” the reception building, we strolled over to Mii-dera Temple and then hurried back to “Omiya” just before 16:00 for the Hotel’s “shopping street tour.” Since it was Wednesday, many shops were closed for their regular day off; still, we were guided around Otsu Hyakucho—visiting old townhouses as well as Japanese sweets shops and liquor stores. The guide (a Hotel staff member) was incredibly engaging and informative; an hour flew by. Happy hour runs from 16:30 to 20:30, with free-flow local Shiga sake served in both lounges at “Omiya” and “Chaya.” After an early dinner, we enjoyed a wonderful time relaxing at “Chaya.” Since our Room had its own bathtub, I took my time enjoying a morning soak—and was greeted right away by a chorus of cicadas. Another perfectly clear day; it looks like it will be hot again here in Otsu. Breakfast was served at the counter seats at “Omiya,” where we had an organic Japanese set meal featuring seasonal specialties from Omi. Inside the two-tiered box were simmered beef shigure-ni, hijiki chikuzen-ni-style stew, nimono vegetables (nizome), shrimp-and-beans (ebi-mame), red konnyaku, fresh yuba tofu skin, spinach ohitashi, and pickles beautifully arranged in clear small bowls—more than enough to whet your appetite first thing in the morning. On top of that came warm chawanmushi (savory egg custard), miso soup, and rice handed over from behind the counter—followed by instructions for the final treat: unagi ochazuke (eel tea rice). Every dish brought out deep flavors from local Omi ingredients—and with such kind conversation from the breakfast staff as well، I couldn’t stop eating. For what it’s worth، I had three large bowls of rice. From check-in to check-out، every staff member was attentive and thoughtful throughout our stay۔ It was only one night، but I felt truly relaxed and refreshed۔ The shopping street/townhouse tour was also outstanding، and I’d love to come back to Otsu again soon—there are still places I missed، and I want to go for the fireworks festival too۔

    We enjoyed the traditional machiya atmosphere, but there’s room for improvement.

    Staying in a traditional machiya offered an exciting experience you don’t get at a Hotel, and we really enjoyed it. There are many Japanese sweets shops nearby, and the shopping street is close as well, so we could really feel the atmosphere of the town. It’s also close to Mii-dera Temple, making it perfect for a slightly challenging walk. However, the bathroom was cold and it took quite a while for hot water to come out. Also, there was no humidifier, even though we were told one would be available at check-in. For dinner, we brought in bento boxes bought in Kyoto. We had breakfast at the front building, but we felt it was a bit lacking in both quantity and quality. Also, depending on where you stay, the Accommodation can be quite far from the front building, which makes it difficult to use facilities like the lounge. It would be helpful if there were better coordination with nearby restaurants and their opening hours.

    [A Memorable Machiya Hotel Where You Can Experience the Area’s Unique Charm]

    I have stayed at Hotels across the whole country, but this stay was truly memorable. What impressed me first was the hospitality of the staff. It wasn’t a formal, scripted service—each person conveyed a genuine warmth that made it clear they truly love this town and this Accommodation, and I felt comfortable throughout my stay. For dinner, we went to a restaurant called “Nao,” which the Hotel recommended, and it was absolutely the right choice. It wasn’t aimed at tourists; it let us experience local charm, and it allowed us to enjoy not only our stay but also the city of Otsu itself. I think this is a unique value that comes from a Hotel that treasures its connection with the community. In the past, I also stayed with a large group at Matsumoto Jujo, another property in the Jiyujin Hotels group (I organized that trip). Matsumoto Jujo was highly satisfying as well, but personally, HOTEL Ko Otsu Hyakucho left an even stronger impression. The reason is the space and hospitality created by making use of traditional townhouses designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. Rather than simply staying at a Hotel, it felt like living in the town for a while. While preserving the character of these historic buildings, comfort is fully ensured, creating a distinctive sense of calm. It offered an appeal you can’t get from large-scale Hotels or luxury Ryokan. If you’re looking not for flashy services or extravagant Facility features but to enjoy local culture, streetscapes, and encounters with people, I highly recommend this Accommodation. It was one of those rare Hotels where staying there becomes part of the purpose of your trip.

    Otsu is full of hidden depth.

    The coffee and snacks in the lounge were very relaxing and enjoyable. What I especially loved was the machiya walking tour the next day. The guide explained everything about the machiya in great detail and also introduced some long-established local shops. It really made me appreciate how rich and fascinating Otsu is. I’m truly grateful, and I would love to come back for the Otsu Festival in October as well. I’d like to thank our guide personally—I wish I had asked for a business card. Thank you very much.

    Just as expected in every way.

    I decided to stay at this accommodation, canceling another one, as I was intrigued by the unique concept. Early check-in and luggage storage were very helpful. Email communication prior to my stay was enjoyable, though response times varied depending on the day, so it's better to allow some flexibility rather than expecting instant replies. The walking tour felt more like a "Buratamori" exploration rather than a shopping tour in the local market; it would have been nice to know the itinerary beforehand. The amenities showed attention to detail, but since there wasn’t a hinoki bath, I would have appreciated having bath salts available. The free drinks in the fridge were great and could be promoted more prominently. Breakfast was outstanding with beautifully crafted tableware that added enjoyment; however, I personally would have preferred miso soup or regular soup over chawanmushi (though it was delicious). As a solo traveler, it might not have been cost-effective for me personally, but this is definitely an accommodation worth experiencing at least once!

    I had a relaxing stay.

    You can enjoy a leisurely stroll around the nearby shopping streets and Lake Biwa area. The shopping streets are a mix of traditional long-established stores and new shops, making it an interesting experience. While many shops were closed on Sundays and public holidays, we were delighted to purchase delicious pickles and Japanese sweets as souvenirs.

    It was a wonderful Hotel!

    A stylish space that blends modernity with the charm of an old building, this Hotel was truly wonderful. After soaking in the spacious bath, walking barefoot on the floor released a soothing aroma of cypress. I stayed at Omiya for two nights, and along the old Tokaido road where the Hotel is located, there are traditional Japanese confectionery shops and tea houses that have been around since the Edo period, giving a feeling of stepping back in time! The breakfast featured ingredients unique to Otsu and was absolutely delicious! I stayed with someone from Australia, and I believe this Hotel offers a great experience for foreign guests to truly feel Japan.

    Surprisingly, after ...

    Surprisingly, after exiting Kyoto East Interchange, I quickly arrived in the charming town of Otsu. A green and cream-colored tram runs through the streets! The town is filled with old buildings and has a nostalgic atmosphere. I parked my car at a parking lot near the Hotel and walked along the cobblestone path of the old Tokaido Road with my suitcase in hand. Within just 100 meters or so, there were traditional Japanese confectionery shops with impressive signs and intriguing buildings to explore. But first, I entered through the large noren curtain of Omihouse Reception Building. Inside, dim lighting by Louis Poulsen fixtures illuminated a space adorned with iconic Scandinavian furniture against dark gray walls—simply stunning! While enjoying delicious roasted green tea and welcome sweets, I received recommendations for lunch spots along with a beautifully illustrated map called "Tekuteku Otsu Hyakucho Meguri" to start my exploration. The historic shops in Otsu Hyakucho have wide facades yet deep interiors. Despite being so close to Kyoto, it feels distinctly different—more open-hearted and welcoming. Every shopkeeper I encountered was warm and friendly: from tea shops to pickled goods stores; an Italian restaurant where I had lunch; an izakaya visited spontaneously at night; an Otsu-e painting shop guided by a local expert; wagashi stores selling karinto manju; even an established funazushi specialty store—all were delightful places where time seemed to slip away. What’s amazing is that all these spots on the map are within walking distance from the Hotel! The rooms at this Accommodation are so comfortable that you’d want to stay inside all day long. Yet there are still more places left on "Tekuteku Map" that beckon exploration. Torn between relaxing in an Egg Chair overlooking lush greenery or venturing out again—I felt wonderfully conflicted. The next day’s walking tour guide turned out to be just me as her sole participant! She kindly showed me around morning temple markets and recommended shops until right before check-out time. Her calm demeanor belied her passion for sharing everything great about Otsu during our two-hour bike-following adventure—it flew by in no time. All staff members at this Accommodation were kind-hearted professionals who made every recommendation spot-on without fail! From lounge lighting design down even smallest details—the entire lodging exudes timeless beauty while preserving historical machiya houses into modern-day life seamlessly thanks largely unseen daily efforts behind-the-scenes maintaining such excellence alive today! Charming Town Of Yuka-Otsu. With dreams completing Tekuteku Map someday soon, I’ll surely return again someday!

    It was a very clean ...

    It was a very clean and pleasant accommodation. The cleaning was thorough, and everything was spotless and comfortable. The lounge space downstairs was freely accessible, and the absence of staff made it more relaxing without feeling self-conscious. On Tuesdays, many nearby restaurants were closed, so having the lounge available was truly helpful. Breakfast had just the right portion for women; however, men might find it lacking in protein. Some facilities like the bidet or bathtub cover were slightly confusing to use, and I noticed some guests asking about them. A simple instruction manual would provide reassurance. There were also inconsistencies in how staff explained nighttime lounge usage; a written guide would make things clearer and more convenient for guests. I joined the free walking tour around town as well, but due to rain, it focused mainly on shopping streets. The guide had difficulty walking and used a bicycle at times—this made it hard to hear what they were saying during parts of the tour. Additionally, when I overheard them asking shopkeepers for discounts on behalf of participants, it felt slightly awkward. That said, overall this is an amazing accommodation where I’d absolutely love to stay again! Thank you very much!

    I had a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

    The hospitality, the craftsmanship within the facility, the room decor, and the service were all highly satisfying. Every detail was thoughtfully designed yet subtle. A quiet and relaxing atmosphere prevailed throughout. It made me love Otsu City even more. The attached café was a delightful addition—both coffee and tea were excellent! The snacks provided added to the high level of satisfaction. I would love to visit again, explore, and stay at this accommodation once more.

    Quiet and very comfortable accommodation

    I stayed at the tea house for 2 nights. The staff was very attentive, and I had a pleasant stay. The breakfast was delicious and satisfying. Most importantly, despite it being Golden Week, the entire town was quiet and peaceful. It’s an excellent base for sightseeing, with easy access to Lake Biwa as well as Kyoto and Osaka. However, if there’s room for improvement: I used the pre-check-in service this time, but unlike regular check-in guests who received a dessert service, we did not get one. Also, during our Multiple Night Stay, the breakfast menu remained exactly the same both days; some variety would have been appreciated. Overall though, I was satisfied and had a great trip!

    As always, a great accommodation

    I have been staying here every year for the past few years, and as always, it was a pleasant stay. This time, I stayed one night in a whole rental and another night in a 2nd-floor Room. I participated in the Machiya tour for the first time this visit. It was fascinating to learn about Shiga Prefecture being the birthplace of Japanese tea, the location of the Otsu Incident involving Nicholas II, as well as features like Inuyarai and Shoki-san unique to Machiya houses. Looking forward to visiting again next year!

    Cozy Accommodation

    I stayed for a multiple night stay of 4 nights in Room 202 on the second floor of Omiya, located along the old Tokaido. The room was more spacious and comfortable than it appeared on the website, and very practical as well. The Japanese-style design combined with Scandinavian lighting fixtures was perfectly matched and beautiful. The staff were not overly intrusive but provided attentive service whenever needed. Although the weather unexpectedly felt like midwinter, I felt relieved every day returning to the accommodation to find my room warm and lit up. The daily sweets prepared in the room were delicious and something I looked forward to each day. I highly recommend joining the shopping street tour or townhouse tour; they gave me a glimpse into what Otsu is like, which was fascinating. Otsu has many delicious foods, and it’s a town I’d love to visit again. When that time comes, I will definitely stay at Koda Otsu Hyakucho again!

    I stayed here for a ...

    I stayed here for a trip to Otsu. Having also visited Satoyama Jujo and Hakone Honbako, I could feel the staff's warm smiles and dedicated efforts, which always make me want to support them. Some points of concern: The renovated machiya-style room had a thoughtful design, but the location of power outlets was hard to find, and there was no space on the sink area for travel items. Although there was a towel warmer, only one bath towel and one face towel were provided per person; unfortunately, the face towel had stains on it (I assume they would have replaced it if I contacted them, but I noticed this late at night when only an emergency contact number was available). Since you may continue creating such accommodations in the future, I share these comments with high hopes for improvement. The next day, I joined a guided tour where the guide carried numerous well-prepared materials in their bag but didn’t refer to them while providing detailed explanations. Their love for Otsu came through clearly in their words and made me want to visit again. The breakfast was excellent as expected; additionally, the welcome sweets and banana cake in the lounge were absolutely delicious!

    Renovated for functionality while preserving the charm of a traditional townhouse.

    It was a very good hotel. The staff provided service with an appropriate level of attentiveness. The amenities and renovations improved the traditional townhouse's coldness while maintaining good sunlight and usability. While the whole-house rental option is attractive based on the interior, for shorter stays, a kitchen isn't necessary, and room allocation was sufficient. Considering the location, staying in or near the building with reception is more convenient for breakfast. One minor disappointment was breakfast; while I understand wanting to serve Omi beef, it solidifies when cold due to its fat content—perhaps simmered dishes would be better. Even so, I would definitely choose this accommodation again when visiting Otsu next time!

    This is my impression after staying for one night. I usually post reviews when something concerns me, but this is the first time I write a review to express my admiration... [Good Points] - Although I arrived later than the scheduled check-in time, I was warmly welcomed with great consideration. - It was nice to have access to the lounge, where I could enjoy a variety of snacks, nuts, coffee (cafe latte also available), and tea. - Even though there are properties in a higher price range without porter service, I was grateful for the help with carrying my luggage. - The room was warmed up in anticipation of my arrival. Having a towel heater was also a pleasant surprise in winter. - I was very pleased to find drinks prepared in the refrigerator. [The Only Concern] I was concerned about the dryness due to the lack of a humidifier. (Was there one somewhere, or could I have borrowed one if I asked?) It would be great if a humidifier could be provided during the winter season. In summary, the service spirit and personality of the staff were impeccable, making it a wonderful property. The renovated townhouse structure was beautiful, and I think it's wonderful how they cherish the old while creating new value. I believe I will stay here again when I visit this area.
