A special place and time filled with everything you love.
Nanzenji Sando Kikusui is a special place filled with everything we love, and staying here becomes a happy time to share it all with family. A beautiful Kyoto garden in fresh spring green, exquisite cuisine and wine, welcome Champagne, luxurious Rooms, and the staff’s hospitality—plus the one-of-a-kind location on Nanzenji Sando. Few Accommodations offer all of this. This time, we woke up early to join the dawn zazen session at Nanzen-ji Temple, which became an unforgettable experience. It is worth traveling here even if it means taking a flight just to visit.

A newly renovated modern Japanese-style Room and a quiet garden
As this is where we held our wedding reception 10 years ago, we chose to stay here. The building has been renovated and the interior is now beautiful, but the garden felt unchanged, as if time had stood still. The Room was spacious and comfortable, with a great view of the garden. We would love to visit again.

Perfect for special occasions
We stayed here for a special occasion. It coincided with the peak cherry blossom season, and my wife and I were able to enjoy an extraordinary experience. We hope Japanese cuisine will be brought back.

A Hotel with a Garden Perfectly Suited to Kyoto
This Hotel offers a truly peaceful and relaxing stay. During my visit, I couldn't hear any noise from neighboring rooms. The garden is stunning. I visited during the autumn foliage season, so I enjoyed illuminated maple trees during dinner and breakfast, as well as breathtaking bonsai-style large pine trees that seemed to have come straight out of a Kano school folding screen painting. The polished tree trunks added to the artistic atmosphere, making it feel like stepping into a masterpiece. The garden itself is mesmerizing; time passes effortlessly while admiring its beauty, and there's no need to visit other temples or shrines for autumn leaves—this place alone provides an exceptional experience. The Italian dinner was plentiful and enjoyable while overlooking the beautiful garden scenery. The Genovese pasta with fresh sea urchin was outstanding. As expected from a place recognized by Michelin, everything lived up to its reputation. Although there are only a few guest rooms, there were enough staff members providing attentive service throughout my stay. The complimentary drinks in the refrigerator included wine, beer, tea, and more—so many options that I could barely consume 20% of them!

Unfortunately, Japanese-style breakfast is not available.
I have stayed in Kyoto many times throughout the year, but I’ve grown tired of Kyoto Hotels. Affordable Ryokans are often fully booked, and the more traditional high-end ones are too expensive. As a compromise, I chose this place with its mix of Japanese and Western styles. My impression after staying here is that it feels like a small Hotel. The Room had beautiful flooring with a hammered finish. The washi paper on the walls was nice but slightly peeling in some areas. What disappointed me most was the air conditioning system. It was so noisy that I couldn’t sleep all night. Turning it off made it too cold, so I kept turning it on and off throughout the night. The shower in the bathroom was confusing to use; twice, I accidentally turned on the overhead shower while still dressed (crying emoji). I only wanted to wash my feet but ended up soaking my clothes due to bad luck. I had been looking forward to trying their highly-rated Japanese cuisine based on Reviews, but apparently, they no longer serve it anymore. If I had known this beforehand, I wouldn’t have made a Reservation as that was something I really anticipated enjoying! Instead, they served Western-style food you can find anywhere else—loaded with processed meats like ham, bacon, and sausages—far too much animal protein! It made me imagine their chef as a young bodybuilder (laughs). On top of that, there were only minimal vegetables served—a tough meal for us older guests. The garden was beautiful but smaller than expected compared to what we imagined from photos or descriptions online. For comparison purposes: The neighboring Tairyu Sanso has an expansive and stunning garden which we highly recommend visiting instead! This property is an old Ryokan; however not much remains from its original charm except for perhaps its main entrance area or waiting room near reception. On a positive note: The location is quiet despite being close to major tourist attractions—a definite plus point!

The Best Base for Exploring the Gardens Around Nanzenji Temple
During our garden tour around Nanzenji, we stayed here before visiting the nearby Tairyu Sanso. The garden at Kikusui, designed by Jihei Ogawa, was a highlight, and we enjoyed the views from both our room and the restaurant. After breakfast, we strolled through the garden and had a chance to chat with the dedicated gardener. Despite it being during Obon season, we enjoyed a peaceful night away from the bustling main street. For dinner, we reserved Italian cuisine paired with sake for an enjoyable experience.

Full of Kyoto Charm
This was my first one-night stay at Nanzenji. The accommodation was filled with a welcoming atmosphere everywhere, and the room, in particular, was exceptional. The carefully selected amenities and the outdoor bath in the room, complete with lit mosquito coils, were truly impressive. It is an unforgettable and wonderful room among all accommodations I have stayed at so far. The meals were also excellent; both dinner and breakfast were very delicious. I especially enjoyed the chef's selection of various pastas for dinner and the delightful rice served at breakfast. While this accommodation could have been a perfect score overall, there was one disappointing aspect—the cost-performance of drinks during dinner. Although the wine recommended by the sommelier was indeed delicious, due to a lack of clear communication with them regarding general pricing expectations for this restaurant, it unfortunately affected my overall impression negatively despite everything else being outstanding.

This was my first st...
This was my first stay at this accommodation. I had always wanted to stay at Kikusui, so I was very much looking forward to it, and it did not disappoint—it was a wonderful accommodation. The charming interior and garden were delightful, and the room was clean and comfortable. I booked with dinner and breakfast included, and the meals were absolutely delicious. The breakfast in particular had just the right amount of dishes that perfectly complemented freshly cooked rice; each dish was carefully prepared, making me feel truly happy from the start of the day. If I have another chance to visit Kyoto, I would love to make a reservation at Kikusui again. Thank you for your attentive service and for providing such a pleasant stay!

It was comfortable.
It was my first stay, but it was a good hotel. The location is convenient, and all the staff are Japanese, which is rare these days, and they all have a high level of professionalism. The meals were delicious, and the room was comfortable. It was a wonderful hotel that truly represents Kyoto.

It is disappointing that the quality does not live up to the name of a culinary Ryokan.
I stayed for one night in the SPA suite. I chose Japanese cuisine for dinner, but it was disappointing. The warm dishes, including the miso soup, were lukewarm, and the hassun was just in name, with the duck roast being of a quality similar to a slightly better station bento. The mackerel in the mackerel sushi, which is supposed to be a specialty of Kyoto, was very fishy, and I struggled quite a bit. The sashimi was also average. I was looking forward to the clay pot rice at the end, as the hotel's official website mentioned that it uses Okina Kasumi and a clay pot from Hachidaime Gihei. However, there was no crispy rice, which was crucial. When I asked if there was no crispy rice, I was told, "This rice is not recommended for crispy rice, so it's difficult to cook it that way!" I have visited Hachidaime Gihei a few times in the past, and I remember having crispy rice when I got a second serving. This time, they said, "We are using rice from Hachidaime Gihei," but does that mean they didn't use Okina Kasumi? Was it a different rice blend specifically for chestnut rice? My mind was full of questions, but due to the atmosphere, I just nodded and said, "I see!" In any case, it is well-known that Hachidaime Gihei provides crispy rice, so I think it would be better to explain it to avoid misunderstandings in the future. When I asked if it was possible to take the leftover rice back to the room as rice balls, I was told, "We can give you some wrap, so you can make them yourself." Of course, I made them myself... Since it was a stay with two meals for 90,000 yen per person, I had assumed that a night snack would be included, which was my own expectation, so I deeply regret that. However, I didn't expect to have the experience of making rice balls from the leftover clay pot rice myself. With the recent surge in accommodation costs in Kyoto city, this price setting might not be expensive, but compared to the Japanese cuisine at similarly priced luxury Stays nearby, I felt it was quite lacking. The self-made rice balls might be a COVID-19 measure, but the inconsistency was evident as the staff were not wearing masks. Despite the season, there were no ayu with roe or matsutake mushroom dobin mushi, and the ingredients were quite disappointing, not just the taste. The room bath was very pleasant, and everyone praised it highly.

Room with a spa
Mist sauna, open-air bath Everything was available, and I was able to relax and refresh myself by staying in for a long time.
